I am reading the manga Kakafukaka at the moment (lovely art, by the way), and I just had to say a few words about it, even if it doesn't look like it has a huge fandom around here.
The premise is sort of unusual for a romance manga (or maybe not; this is josei, after all, the category that gave us Kimi wa Petto, among others). Terada Aki is a young woman with low self-esteem with a boring job. At the very beginning of the story, her boyfriend cheats on her, and she ends up moving into a shared flat. It turns out that one of her flatmates is Hongyo Tomoya, a guy she sort of dated in middle school, and never spoke to again after they lost their virginity to each other. If you think that's awkward, well... buckle up.
Turns out our hero has erectile dysfunction that magically disappears when she's around, so he asks for her help (!!!) while promising he won't do anything dirty (his definition of "dirty" in this context being whatever she's not okay with). That would be enough to send most women away screaming, but our heroine is intrigued (especially considering their past shared history) and, partly because of her great need for validation, partly because of her curiosity concerning Tomoya's past and present feelings for her, she says yes. And then shenanigans happen.
I do admit that, in spite of its weirdness (or maybe exactly because of it), I have a soft spot for this story, not unlike the one I had for Nevertheless, although I find the main characters way less annoying and frustrating than the leads of Nevertheless. While Na-bi and Jae-eon couldn't communicate to save their lives, Aki and Tomoya do talk to each other, but since their ways of thinking are so different, with her being an insecure mess with the tendency of getting locked in her own thoughts, and him being a major introvert who takes most things literally, hyperfixates on stuff and is very blunt at times, they just cannot understand each other until the very end. Throw in also their past shared history, with him being convinced that she hates him, and her thinking that he was at best indifferent towards her, and at worst contemptuous, and the situation becomes even more complicated.
I did see a lot of criticism towards Aki for being a pushover and for seeking validation, first from Tomoya, then from Hase, the third flatmate (not gonna discuss him and his manipulative tendencies here, but suffice to say he's not exactly a good guy), but just like with Nevertheless, I cannot help but relate to that a bit. Aki hasn't actually felt good about herself since middle school (and yes, Tomoya was a sort of catalyst for these feelings, not that it was necessarily his fault; Aki just couldn't connect with him properly at the time, deciding to date him on a whim, and completely mistaking his introversion for indifference), so there is no wonder she seeks validation in other people, and there's also no wonder that she tries to move on as soon as she can when she (mistakenly) believes Tomoya to not be romantically interested in her at all. Been there, done that (although I admit that dating two of my flatmates in succession would have probably been way too awkward for me personally).
Unlike with Nevertheless though, where I couldn't really warm up towards Jae-eon (although I kinda sorta rooted for him and Na-bi to work out - the actors did have impeccable chemistry), I really like the male character here. Sure, he's a weirdo, but he's an endearing one, and his hyperfixation on Aki (and hyperfixation it is! he writes an entire series of novels inspired by her because he doesn't know how else to process his overwhelming feelings towards her) doesn't phase me as much as it probably should (again, maybe because I had a similar experience - the first guy I kissed was still interested in me ten years later, and wanted to properly date me, and although I did not take him on his offer, as I had long moved on by that point, I didn't find it weird; on the contrary, I was slightly flattered).
So would I recommend this? I strongly believe it depends on your own personal preferences and experiences; I can totally see how it could be too much for some. But I am embracing the weirdness with both hands, and I find the story sweet rather than inappropriate/creepy.

Anime Movies - Seishun Romance Edition
When I was younger (seven to ten years ago?), I tend to read any kind of stories (not gore, horror though), especially those with good reviews. As I'm getting older, somehow I become less interested in romance as main story/plot. I like romance, it's adorable, exciting, heartwarming. I guess, I just become much more selective particularly with romance.
When I was making a list of anime movies I like to rewatch, other than works from some popular directors, there are some that I also considering to rewatch once in a while. Then I realized that they have seishun romance as a big part of their stories. Here they are~
Koe no Katachi 聲の形 (2016)
I really like Koe no Katachi manga. The anime movie is very nice though I vaguely remember after I watched it, I felt, agh it's not that as impressive as manga. Growing up with regrets, past mistakes, and how they handle those. Mending hearts and relationships. Self-loathing. Characters personalities and their growths. Koe no Katachi is compelling. Those X on faces of people around Ishida Shoya also relatable. Love story between two main characters, Nishimiya Shouko and Ishida Shoya, is lovely. Even though romance is a big element, there are a lot to ponder about (other than romance) in this story, and maybe that's why it lingers more. I think I will rewatch this after I reread the manga.
Koi wo shita no wa (恋をしたのわ) by Aiko is a well-match as theme song.
youtube
Josee to Tora to Sakanatachi ジョゼと虎と魚たち (2020)
I watched the live action movie of this story years ago (great casts and theme song), the ending was quite heartbreaking which I thought this anime movie would also have similar ending. I was ready for it but turned out it's not. It's sweet~! Finding your true self and not giving up hope. This anime movie has some beautiful scenes, I like Josee's room!
I really like the ending song, Ao no Waltz (蒼のワルツ) by Eve.
youtube
Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai 君の膵臓をたべたい (2018)
I watched the live action movie first some time ago, it's so heartbreaking (the first movie I watched of Kitamura Takumi and he's very good), and yet I was still a bit excited to have my heart breaks again when I knew they're going to adapt it as anime movie. Emotional journey and bond between two seemingly opposite characters. When I first knew about this story, I initially thought she might be passed away later because of her disease, but damn that twist. Life really, it can be taken away at anytime, unexpectedly. The title 'I want to eat your pancreas' and Sakura's journal 'Living with Dying' (共病文庫 Kyōbyō Bunko) also thought-provoking. That moment when Shiga Haruki said "Can I cry now?" really ;;__;;
I really like the ending song Shunkashuto (夏秋冬 haru natsu aki fuyu) and insert song Himitsu (秘密) by Sumika.
youtube
youtube
May there be many more captivating, wonderful, thought-provoking, encouraging, beautiful stories we can watch in this lifetime~

Manga Will Always Have a Special Place in My Heart…
Reading, writing about, podcasting about, and sharing manga with others is a favorite pastime for me. As I noted in the first part of A Love Letter to Josei Manga: that after a while, I found myself wearing my grown woman panties and reading more of a specific genre. While Shojo manga has always and will always have a special corner in my heart for being my first genre of manga I ever read, Josei is the genre that has carried me through some heartbreak and real-life workplace drama in my adult years.
For those that need a refresher: What exactly is Josei? Pronounced “JOH-say”, it is what I like to call Shojo manga’s big sister. OR final form. Familiar with the manga genre known as Shonen? As in “Shonen Jump”? Shonen is to Seinen as Shojo is to Josei. Where Shojo’s targeted audience is somewhere between 12-18 years of age, Josei’s targeted audience targets the age group directly after that: adult women.
Tokyo Tarareba Girls (Kodansha) Created by Akiko Higashimura
What’s It About:
Rinko has done everything right. She hustled her way through her twenties to make it as a screenwriter, renting her own office in a trendy Tokyo neighborhood. Everything should have gone according to plan. So at 33, she can’t help but lament the fact that her career’s plateaued, she’s still painfully single, and she spends most of her nights drinking with her two besties at their favorite pub. One night, drunk and delusional, Rinko swears to get married by the time the Tokyo Olympics roll around in 2020. But finding a man—and love—may be a cutthroat, dirty job for a romantic at heart.
You should read it if…
Fair warning and disclaimer: you are going be pissed TF off when reading this manga series. You are going to have your feelings HURT. And you’re going to rage. And cry. You’ll celebrate too but Moto Hagio as my witness, it is a journey to take and endure as a reader. Baby girl, if you’re single woman unattached hitting the end of your twenties or hell, in your thirties, put this next to your Bible or Holy book of your choosing because this is crucial.
Kodansha bills this as “a sharp new comedy about female friendship from the creator of Princess Jellyfish,” and they were NOT wrong. Read this one if you want to see more stories about womenfolk who aren’t fresh-faced teenagers anymore but are still deserving of love, companionship, and feeling fulfilled by work and the lives they lead despite all the dead ends and wrong paths they choose.
Why I loved this series:
As I once tweeted: “TOKYO TARAREBA GIRLS HITS HARDER WHEN YOU’RE CLOSER TO 33 THAN 22. 😭 ” Previously only available as a Digital Manga release, I was ecstatic to learn that Kodansha was finally putting this series into print for those of us who graduated from Princess Jellyfish and wanted more Akiko Higashimura. I had feels, lots of feels that took time to process–that I’m actually still processing now and will be for a while–from jump, from volume one. By volume four and five, I was openly weeping in a coffee shop in a neighborhood not of my own with teenage boys eyeing me wondering what the hell was wrong with me. As much as the story is about…this quest for love and how societal expectations force women to learn to settle and losing parts of themselves, it is every bit of a story about the sacred communion of female friendships with a ‘we all we got’ type of attitude.
