CHAPTER ONE: TAKING WHAT'S NOT YOURS.

CHAPTER TWO: NOT ALLOWED.

Regulus did not realize someone in the Gryffindor common room was still awake.

But he saw him too late. He was already halfway down the stairs.

The boy was sitting in one of the big red couches around the fireplace. The light from the fire made his hair glow a little, but his face was mostly hidden. His head was tilted slightly to the side, and he looked like he was thinking about something. Regulus could not tell what, and he did not care to find out. What mattered was that the boy had not noticed him yet.

Regulus stayed very still; his fingers curled slightly at his sides. If he moved too fast, the steps might creak. If he moved too slow, the fire might shift and cast his shadow against the wall. He did not know if the boy was a prefect, but if he was, then Regulus could not let him see.

He stepped carefully, his feet barely making a sound against the floor. The common room was warm, and the fire flickered gently, filling the space with a soft, golden light. It made everything feel calm and quiet, but Regulus knew better. He knew how quickly things could go wrong.

He kept to the edges of the room, where the light did not reach as much. If the boy looked up, if he turned his head even a little, then it would be over. But he did not. He stayed where he was, staring into the fire, lost in his own world.

Regulus moved as carefully as he could, his breath steady and slow. If he was lucky, he could make it through without being seen. He just had to be careful. Just a little longer.

With every step he took towards the door to the stairs, he could make out certain features about the boy. Some shaggy, slightly blonde hair that fell over his forehead and jagged scars spanning most of his body, as much as Regulus could tell. The firelight flickered against his skin, making the scars look deeper, sharper, as if they had been carved there rather than simply earned.

Regulus did not stop to wonder where they had come from. He did not let himself care. He only focused on his steps, careful and quiet, keeping his eyes ahead. The boy had not noticed him yet, and if Regulus moved right, he never would.

The fire crackled softly, the warmth pressing against his back as he kept to the edges of the room. He was close now. Just a few more steps.

Although Regulus did, in fact, have to mind his steps. The Gryffindors had a tendency to leave stuff around, which did not really surprise him in any way, given their reputation for being messy pricks. It was almost impressive how much clutter they managed to create. Books were stacked haphazardly on the floor, robes were draped over chairs and armrests like their owners had simply forgotten they existed, and there was even a half-eaten chocolate frog lying abandoned near the couch. It made the whole common room feel lived-in, comfortable, but to Regulus, it was just an inconvenience.

He had to be careful, not just because of the mess, but because some of the floorboards might be creaky. He did not know exactly which ones, but he was not about to take any chances. If he stepped wrong, if a single sound gave him away, then it would all be for nothing. The boy on the couch had not noticed him yet, but that could change in an instant.

Regulus moved slowly; his eyes sharp as he navigated the room. He kept to the edges where the floor was more solid, where the firelight did not quite reach as much. His breath was steady, but his heartbeat felt too loud in his ears. He was close now. Just a little farther, just a few more careful steps, and then he would be gone.

"Come to sneak out from Potter's bed again?"
