oh okay hello. you rb’ed my taiwanese spn post on language and i am absolutely bereft. i don’t know if you’re also taiwanese but i wanted to give you this post too because i’m starting to realize that taiwanese hokkien is not chinese.
and if i’m going to project on sam and dean it is very - you learn one colonizer’s language after another and you will never be close to home because your native tongue will never really sound right in your mouth.
and sometimes even if you try really hard it will always be like leaping over one barrier after another and you will never reach the end of the line.
sorry. sorry i just get really emotional about language.
first off… I can’t express how much joy I get from reading through your taiwanese spn tag. I’m half taiwanese from my mom’s side, so everything about sam and dean learning scraps of taiwanese culture from mary really hits. coincidence of all coincidences, my mom’s name is mary too. I know you’re doing this au for yourself, but thank you so much for all of this! it feels like a piece of home :)
second!! I’ve always been interested in taiwanese hokkien. the post you just sent really reminds me of my mom’s and my own relationship with being taiwanese and with language. for me, hokkien has always been this mysterious dialect that only grandparents know. my amah and akong primarily speak it with other family elders and with each other, but they never taught my mom and her sister, who can only speak a bit of mandarin. they (my amah and akong) can also speak mandarin because of school and the various bans on speaking aboriginal dialects during their youth, but it’s weaker than their hokkien. I took mandarin in school just so I could try to talk with them in a language they know better than english, but it still doesn’t feel like enough. learning a native tongue is an uphill battle of self doubt and humiliation, isn’t it? my mother always talks about the guilt she feels, as if she’s letting taiwanese hokkien die out with the elders because she wasn’t made to learn it, and couldn’t fully pass it on to me beyond auspicious names, and a few words remembered from childhood. she’s finding the time to learn now, but so many years have been lost, and there will always be hurdles to overcome.
maybe this will be the final push for me to start learning too, so I can better understand my family and your posts
