Okay, overall consensus of episode 1: you can feel the change in studios and you can feel the change in writers (if there’s new writers, if not i can eat my words.) the animation is about what i expected, they use a lot of tilted angles for reasons I don’t know it’s making me kinda dizzy, some of the VA’s sound very off, I hope they’re doing okay, the dialogue was weirdly hard to focus on, i had to go back and replay bits several times to understand what they were saying, humour still nice, outfits cute, Tang needs to get pushed into some hard manual labour, the house bit was really nice i love that monkey king has been accepted by the group, macaque questioning why the jttw crew is there means that their reincarnations are a weird thing which i’m staring at, uh… and they’re in the underworld now probably!! WOO!! HORRIFYING!!!

oh. that really depends on whether your taste leans more folk or more pop, i’d say? personally, i think stick season (we’ll all be here forever) is an amazing album start to finish. it leans more folk-y with pop elements tho. my favs on that record are northern attitude, stick season, all my love, she calls me back, come over, new perspective, everywhere everything, orange juice, growing sideways, halloween, homesick, the view between villages (extended), your needs my needs, dial drunk, call your mom. but i like every single song on the album. which is why i listed half of them here lol. it’s genuinely one of my fav albums ever.

i have to admit i don’t vibe as much with his previous two albums; i need to be in the mood for them (they’re (folk) pop but just. they don’t click like stick season does. idk how to explain it. i think it’s because stick season it so. specific. very singer-songwriter), but the cape elizabeth ep is *chef’s kiss* especially maine and glue myself shut. from busyhead my favs are false confidence and young blood (the acoustic version is So Good as well), and from i was / i am my fav is part of me.

You cannot assume what the writers's motives are unless you give a straight reference that they said it. Even then. That begs the question. What if the writers' don't tell us their true motives? Are we wrong to headcanon that Merlin would be happier and more effective if he was given a better social position? I have discussed all the evidence in the work. You're not wrong to reach that conclusion yourself that Merlin would say No to that either, because that is Your Headcanon and you have basis to draw from in canon too!

Yet you start your statement with "I think a lot of people miss the point...." and then you proceed with "And as a character that is written to not like those jobs, he woudl be written to be unhappy in those jobs." by just assuming that is what the writers intended and then arguing that you are right, even when "THE TEXT" is contradicting you.

If you are right, then show us the producers explictly saying that! It's not wise to just make claims because that's what YOU FEEL the writers were making. Show me an interview then, or a comic-con answer if you are that confident of your claims. Kims mom validated her for that. after that her and jimmy’s relationship made it so much more clearer to me (to me). Uuuugh just realizing family is a big thing here aaaaaaaaa ripping my hair out. i do want to start with an obligatory "i've read AST all the way through twice and it lives rent free in my head" (as you might be able to tell by my blog title). the character development is SO good and as a person with a touch of religious trauma. well. let's just say that It Hits Home. BUT i'm sending this ask specifically because i'm kinda curious about how you went about doing your tatooine worldbuilding. it feels so nuanced and realistic!

Hello hello!! Thank you so much for stopping by, and for your comments and your lovely question! (I will admit, every time I see you pop up in my notifs I do go "YES!!!! BOBA FETT LIKED MY POST!!!" so. Thank you also for the dopamine.)

I would be more than happy to talk about Tatooine worldbuilding! Also, I am sorry for how long this got, and the few days it took to pull this response together! An answer to your question, which I loved, below:

I started my Tatooine worldbuilding with the Tuskens! Primarily because the culture of Tatooine's slaves (current and former) has been thoroughly explored by some fantastic writers and I didn't want to step on any toes, and also because Boba and Din both had a Tusken connection in canon that I could flesh out. The ahra's culture came later, when I'd nailed down some of the Tusken culture a little more comprehensively. Also, Cobb Vanth would not stay out of my storyboard.

My main goal, when I started storyboarding for ast and realized that the Tuskens were going to play a fairly large role, was to make sure taht ast 'verse's Tusken culture felt just as fleshed-out and fully-realized as ast 'verse's Mandalorian culture. I didn't want to play into either a) portraying the Tuskens as mindless, bloodthirsty subhumans or b) swinging too far the other way and reducing the Tuskens' complexity or agency by portraying them as misunderstood innocents.

So, in that vein, I started with what we knew! I went to that carefully-curated, exhaustively-researched font of Star Wars information, Wookieepedia (I'm being completely serious; the folks who contribute to Wookieepedia are HEROES IN MY EYES). I went through both the "Tusken Raiders" canon and EU/Legends pages, jotting down notes and forming a few lists of questions.

The first list was very simple, and had questions like these:

What do Tuskens eat?

What kind of clothes do they wear?

What tools or weapons do they use?

How do they get around?

How are their tribes structured?

Some of these were easy to answer:

What do Tuskens eat? -> Lots of bantha and other animals they've hunted, including krayt dragons, womp rats, eopies, etc.

What kind of clothes do they wear? -> Sun-protective organic fabrics of some kind, masks, goggles

What tools or weapons do they use? -> Wood and metal gaffi sticks, binocs, cycler rifles, etc

And some of these were harder! To answer some of the questions we didn't have source material (canon or EU) for, or to expand on on an answer, I turned to real-world examples of nomadic cultures. There are nomadic cultures recorded on just about every continent except Antartica; the culture I drew the most inspiration from are the Bedouin, because I felt that the Bedouin's way of life most closely matched what we knew of the Tuskens, but I also looked at a variety of other nomadic groups, most notably the Mongolian nomads. The answers to my questions started to have questions of their own.

What do Tuskens eat? -> Lots of bantha and other animals they've hunted, including krayt dragons, womp rats, eopies, etc -> Do they eat anything other than animal products?

The secondary questions led to more research. Nomadic peoples don't just eat meat; many nomadic cultures don't practice what we think of as traditional agriculture -- farming the same land over and over again -- but that doesn't mean that they don't know how to harvest food. I started looking at recipes and cultural foods, too; at how spices and aromatics are used, at how plants or grains or other forms of protein are used. Bedouins traditionally ate a lot of animal products -- meat and milk, primarily -- but they also made and continue to make great use of dates, figs, olives, anything and everything that grows. So, back to the "what" and "how" questions:

What do Tuskens eat? -> Lots of bantha and other animals they've hunted, including krayt dragons, womp rats, eopies, etc -> Do they eat anything other than animal products? -> Yes, they probably eat whatever they can find or forage in the desert.

I then went down an extensive rabbit hole building a more-or-less functional ecology for Tatooine (my background is in ecology) and merrily started to think about what Tuskens could use. There's no way Tatooine is that barren -- it's too poor to import all of its food, which means that stuff has to grow there. So what would grow there? Probably things that grow in harsh environments everywhere. Trees and grasses and stonefruits. Rice and nuts at higher altitudes.

I went through my "what" and "how" questions that way, and once I had enough meat on those bones, I made another list of "why" questions -- I'd take something that we knew, or something that I had extrapolated from, and tried to frame that information in a cultural context.

Bantha are pretty big and probably need a lot of food and water. Why do Tuskens keep so many of them? -> Because Tuskens rely on banthas for food, transportation, clothing and even navigation.

That went on for quite a while, lmao. I have pages and pages of notes like that. What do Tuskens believe about their environment, and why do they believe that? What kind of tribal structure do they have, and why are they structured that way? Et cetera. et cetera. Y'all know me by now -- I have never been shortwinded.

But once I got to the whys, knitting together everything together on the page was a lot easier.

What do Tuskens eat? -> Easda (poonten porridge) and japoor meal bread. Tamur (dried dates) and bantha yoghurt. Stews and curries with local foraged spices and fresh meat. Fruit and nuts from the highlands, and just about anything that can be dug up or hunted down or plundered from a nest.

And so on and so on. Throw in some American Sign Language -- the storyboarding and research was done prior to the revelation that showrunners developed a Tusken Sign Language -- and some cosmology (also heavily influenced by pre-Islamic, desert-dwelling cultures) and you have the ast 'verse Tuskens!

Honestly, working on the different cultures of Tatooine has been one of my favorite parts of the fic! 

This got so long, so, TL;DR -- I started with what we knew of the Tuskens, threw out the parts I didn't like (basically all of AOTC Tusken Culture, Anakin), made a list of "what" and "how" questions, answered them, asked some more "why" questions, answered those too and then hit the ground running!!

This process worked very well for me to help order things in my head, so I applied it to the ahra and to a few of the Mandalorian subgroups as well.

I liked the way it ended! It’s unfortunate that we must bid ado to this lovely grotesque show of INVINICBLE, but alas we must in order to move onto greater things and the world beyond. Hopefully, they’ll get confirmed for a second season because I really don’t want them to end on such an extraordinarily high point...

I was asking more about the character's dolls themselves, like Kirsten's doll Sari and how accurate you found them to be. (it's no secret though taht the Beforever rebranding was a terrible mistake)

Ohhh! Sorry for the misunderstanding. Let’s take a look.

Samantha’s doll (1904)

I couldn’t find a photo of the original version that was discontinued in 1993, but it looked about the same. My sister has it, so I played with it growing up.

This doll has a porcelain head and real hair and...that’s about it, in terms of resemblance to dolls that were actually popular in 1904. Unless it’s meant to be an all-bisque, but those were usually way smaller than this doll is relative to Samantha herself. An actual doll Samantha might have gotten for Christmas could have looked more like this:

Felicity’s doll (1775)

Okay, someone REALLY did their homework with this one. While the face looks a bit Voldemort-y, the general shape is like the peg dolls (AKA Grodnertal dolls, tuck comb dolls, peg woodens, etc.) popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

(Wooden doll, late 18th century. This doll was actually pictured in the back of the relevant book, Changes For Felicity. I know because that image haunted my doll dreams for most of my childhood. No clue where she is now, but gods...what a beauty.)

The concept of the doll is that she was displayed in the window of a fabric shop frequented by Felicity and her mother, to demonstrate the latest fashions. This echoes both the idea of a Pandora, a doll used by wealthy 18th-century ladies to display new styles in miniature for their seamstresses to copy, and the “milliner’s model” title applied to some later dolls in the early-mid 19th century. (We now know that so-called milliners’ models were toys all along, but I believe the myth was still widely believed when Felicity’s books first came out.)

Physically, she bears more resemblance to later peg-dolls:

Still, I feel like more of an Attempt was made than with Samantha’s doll. So kudos to them!

Kirsten’s doll (1854)

I mean, it’s kind of hard to say that a homemade rag doll is accurate or inaccurate. Because what we now call “folk art dolls” pretty much ran the gamut in terms of appearance. From oil-painted faces and elaborate gowns to simpler styles like Kirsten’s beloved Sari, you really do see a huge variety.

(Cloth doll, c. 1890. Not a lot of early cloth dolls survive in good condition due to the nature of their materials and the fact that many belonged to poor families who would keep them in circulation until they had to be thrown away. Plus, they can be hard to date conclusively unless they have very stylistically specific clothing.)

So yeah, completely plausible.

Addy’s doll (1864)

See above. Completely plausible; nothing about her looks jarringly modern to me.

(Homemade cloth doll, c. 1880. A bit later, but still- there’s nothing stylistically to the actual doll that makes me say “oh that’s definitely 1880s, not 1860s!”)

Molly’s doll (1944)

There were plenty of nurse dolls about in the 1940s, and while many were composition, I believe some were hard plastic.

If this doll had rooted hair- which I can’t recall from my childhood -that would have been less likely than one with a wig. But overall, I don’t find her too difficult to imagine as a doll Molly’s dad could have sent her for Christmas.

Kit’s doll (1932)

Meant to represent Amelia Earhart, this doll reminds me of some very specific dolls from the same time period. Hold for Googling.

Totally plausible. Totally cute. Totally perfect for Kit’s character.

Josefina’s doll (1824)

Okay I am super out of my depth with this one. The history of the colonial southwest in the 1820s is something I haven’t studied much at all and, though I had Josefina, I only ever read her first book. But let’s take a look.

She’s cloth and homemade, so once again, literally any style of face or body could be valid for most eras (barring dolls made by specific artists).

I seriously tried to find a comparative doll, but finding a cloth doll from the 1820s, period, proved impossible. Let alone one from New Mexico. A search for “New Mexico cloth dolls” turned up a bunch of later tourist dolls, meant to represent stylized Folk Costumes(TM) instead of real people’s clothing during the period. 

That being said, I buy the doll’s dress as 1820s, assuming it represents mainstream European fashions that reached the colonies by way of Spain. And she certainly has the look of a homemade cloth doll.

Kaya’s doll (1764)

Once again, homemade doll = could basically look like anything. Some Native groups did have very specific doll styles, like the iconic wide-skirted Seminole dolls, but I’m having trouble finding specifics for Nez Perce toys. I am seeing more dolls in cradleboards- by which I mean “more than two actual images of antique dolls that aren’t Kaya herself.”

As with a lot of things about Kaya, it seems the team really did their research on this one. And of course, they had a creative team of actual Nez Perce people working on the doll and her outfits and accessories.

Julie’s Barbie styling head (1974)

It’s literally just an exact replica of the real product. Lest you forget that Mattel owns AG now, so they can legally do things like this.

Courtney’s doll (1986)

...this is just a way to use up dead stock of the Molly mini-dolls, isn’t it?

ok i’ve noticed something about rising signs, it’s only an observation but i believe it can have a correlation to the experience of you leaving from your mothers womb, like how the birth was like, how you came out and so on. Cap risings experienced complications, aries popped STRAIGJT OUT, no problems at alll for these folks, they were just READYYY, taurus was a slow, steady birth, leo was dramatic and out there, the doctors may have been talking about it all day, aquarius was shocking, unpredictable, as if the doctors didn’t expect the baby to be ready to come out in time for example, cancer could’ve meant so much for the mother, sag was a big baby. tahts all i can come up with rn hahah, so that’s the post lmaoo. and add on if u have more !!
