I feel you, but the Duffers just simply do not like killing their main cast, as for Steve... he is not only one of the main characters but also a fan fav. Like the whole reason they created Eddie's character and made him be Dustin's brother figure is so they could kill Eddie off and like... Eddie pretty much died in Steve's place narratively speaking.
NO BC YOU'RE RIGHT.
It's so frustrating to me because the Suffer Brother do make decisions for the St story based off marketing and the story suffers because of it. (Side Note: It could be Netflix pressuring them but,,,idk to extent it also has to be them at this point)
Few quick examples, if we see a character dynamic that became popular, that became marketable, that is all we will ever see of them. Max for instance, the GA loves seeing her with Lucas and El, so now we only see her interact with those two (and Steve but I'm coming back to him) and very rarely do we see her have meaningful moments with other characters. I don't know what her friendship is like with Will bc we have not seen it. We don't even know how they interact with each other. The GA is not interested in it so it doesn't happen. There's a ton more examples. In a way it stunts the character's growth. We should be seeing them come together, grow together as a family as the Suffer Brothers want us to see them as, but they restrict character's interactions with each other based on what the GA likes.
Back to Steve. 'Babysitter Steve' blew up after season two and now he's been restricted to that role. It feels like he's not allowed to grow. He does have meaningful interactions with characters but only like Robin, Max, Dustin, and Lucas. You can say Nancy too but this an entirely different thing. I worry about that storyline.
The Suffer Brothers have written him into a box. I feel like he was supposed to die in season four but the character Steve is too marketable to lose so they came up with Eddie instead.
Eddie was destined to die in place of Steve, that was his purpose. It's why he was created. They made sure to have him bond with Dustin and they made sure to hit the same emotional notes when he died as if it had been Steve instead. A total cop out.
Eddie's death was unnecessary and Steve should've been the one to die, the Suffer Brothers are just sellouts. But if they planned on killing Steve in season four, odds are we wouldn't have gotten Eddie, or at least he wouldn't have been apart of one of the main crews.

need to say #something on lifesteal shipping discourse itā€™s so funny to me how these boundaries things are so fucking stupid bcs u have squiddo being like ā€œit makes me sad to see ppl siblingcoding me and ash bc if i was a guy ppl would treat me differentā€ but if ls was popular in like.2017 there would be soooooo many squidswaggers bc ppl shipped!!!! guys and girls!!! A lot!!! and when mcyt became woke ppl were soooo adamant to be like girls and boys can be PLATONIC letā€™s NOT!! But ppl want smth deeper than friendship (but wonā€™t look into qprs) so we go to sibling dynamics to make SURE thereā€™s no boundary crossing which is likešŸ˜ okay I guess. but itā€™s always between women and men so itā€™s literally not even abt girls and boys being able to have a platonic friendship lmaoooooo

I went on a big rant and deleted it for my own sanity but man- I hate how pr*sh*ppers will cause problems and then be upset when people try to find solutions to get rid of them. You aren't a hero. Stop trying to convince yourself and kids that you are. Just- fuck off man. "It's fictional", quit playing, we know that's the only excuse you have because there's nothing you can say to justify it.
I hate this god damn fandom. I dont even hope for their deaths, maybe they can change afterall. They're right in that regard, its fiction, they have the time to make the change since they haven't done/before they do something irredeemable. I just wish that filtering tags automatically blocked anyone who used them. Filtering the tags doesn't do anything if I still have to run into these people to know to block them.

Saw someone talk about the politics on qsmp saying it shouldnā€™t have been made a thingā€¦
But it was made to build plot and question relationships dynamics? Qsmp showed that it involves heavy lore and that lore isnā€™t gonna always be sunshine and rainbows.
Some were also comparing it to dsmp and that itā€™s been really negative plot overall. The only reason the dsmp politics were ruined was because twt people took it too seriously which ruined it. Dsmp is just one bad example of many smps. So if the lore is being ruined itā€™s cause itā€™s being took too seriously.
Keep in mind there has been several smps where a government or politics are involved and they still worked out fine. Like have they watched Karmaland or Hermitcraft or even smpEarth.
The short end is that if you canā€™t handle any of the lore and/or the exploration of relationship dynamics, then itā€™s time to log off and search for something else to be interested in because itā€™s just roleplay content at the end of the day.

There was a bit of a tiff that went down yesterday among some of my spnblr colleagues, and I'm not gonna really comment on that directly, suffice it to say I blocked the person involved ages ago bc they always act like this and I find it uncomfortable and unpleasant. But I think their behaviour is notable nc it's an example of a phenomena I've been noticing more and more lately, that I'm sure smarter and more attentive people than me have already described but I'm going to give it a shot anyway.
It's essentially the belief that if you present yourself as the passive/receptive partner then your aggressive sexual advances are no big deal and just funny jokes. The obvious related thought is the idea that women can't harrass or sexually assault men, but it goes beyond that imo.
I saw a post just recently speculating on how it's funny to talk about how you want to have so muc sex if you're a bottom but if you're a top it's creepy and makes you sound like a predator which is like. Mind boggling to me in terms of the unexamined bullshit at play. And to be fair people on that post were quick to point out that using sexually aggressive language to describe what you want someone to do to you is just as much harrassment as the other way around, and that people are far too permissive of this kind of behaviour. No one made the inverse observation that "wanting to put your penis in someone" as stated in the post is not inherently creepy or sexually predatory.
Like, topping and bottoming are a morally neutral acts. I feel like this sentiment goes around once every few months but we have got to let go of the idea that penetration is inherently violent and dominating. Especially if the inverse belief is allowing people to excuse genuinely out of line behaviour because they think being the receptive partner somehow makes them inherently non-threatening.
I mean that was imo a not insignificant part of the recent booktok drama abt a woman essentially sexually harrassing a hockey player. And there was absolutely more going on, not least of which being her getting rewarded for her behaviour initially, but I think a big issue is that we kind of apply the "punching up" model to situations like this, her target was both a man and a celebrity, the balance of power tips heavily in his favour so her actions become permissible. And for some reason there's this continued perception of bottoming and topping carrying a power imbalance. But if booktok lady had been screaming at Hockey players that she wanted to fuck them in the ass, that wouldn't be any worse that yelling at them to fill all her holes. It's the same shit.
So like, if you say, have this habit of using extended graphic sexual metaphors about how, say, people disagreeing with you about a fictional character all want you to suck their huge dick so bad but you don't want to and actually their dick is super small and pathetic anyway. You haven't actually cracked the code of how to avoid being a creep bc it's your mouth and their cock and not vice versa. And when you start actually replying to people with shit like this instead of just keeping it to your own blog? Sorry but just because it's about how "Everyone Else" wants you to suck their fat dick doesn't distract from the fact that you are the one opening conversations with other people with graphic sexual language for no reason.
(You also can't pretend not to be body shaming with your countless small dick comments by saying that it's just a metaphor and you're talking about BEHAVING like you have a small dick plbt plbt plbt that's a fucking cop out answer for idiot cowards. You are talking about people "metaphorically" having a small dick as a stand in for being pathetic. "I'm not bodyshaming I'm just using having a body like this as a stand in for qualities I think are bad!" What a fucking joke. But I digress)
And like I genuinely think this person just thinks they're doing a funny bit, and I don't think they need to be canceled for it or w/e but I do feel we all need to reflect on our assumptions abt sex and accept that the rules don't change bc of gender, or submissiveness, or who's sticking what in who. Unsolicited sexual comments are unsolicited comments, and while I'm not gonna pretend that tumblr is a sacred space where we can't make jokes about screwing and dicks and balls, there's always a line, and you don't actually get a free pass to cross it by being an uwu submissive bottom so spank me daddy.
Also if you're gonna make an extended sexual metaphor about what arguing about the cw's supernatural is like, I guess go nuts show nuts but be aware that you are gonna be broadcasting your particular sexual hangups when you do. Personally I prefer to put them in my fanfiction and get embarrassed when someone points them out. But hey, different strokes.

dsmp/mcytblr had the worst and wildest fucking discourse, but I have to give it to them - people at least tagged it pretty thoroughly, and one could fairly easily avoid most of it.

would you mind deleting posts related to pro/antishipping? thanks
this is such an old ask and i think i know who sent it but just for anyone else here; you can ask me to tag things and i will do that to the best of my ability (its possible that i might forget at times but i will try), but i will never let someone tell to delete whole topics off of MY blog because itā€™s literally MY blog??
iā€™d be more flexible about deleting specific individual posts if thereā€™s a good reason but even that idk, depends on a lot lol

okay so i just stumbled upon your blog and the first thing i saw was the pianjeong tag.
i have to ask.
do you ship piandao and jeong jeong??? do other people ship piandao and jeong jeong ???? is pianjeong a thing, and if so, WHY ?????
i'm truly baffled but i want to be enlightened
(i know you sent this a while ago sorry, took me some time to figure out how to respond and gather all the links to fic)
yes, yes, and yes, though of course it's a pretty niche thing since it's about minor characters.
as to why - imo it stems from the fact that if you want to ship either of them with someone, the other is the most obvious choice. around the same age, fellow white lotus member, fellow ex-fire nation military, easy to interpret as gay. like no, they don't have any canon interaction, but it's easy to imagine that they've interacted offscreen.
for my part, i got into it in 2020 when my friend abby @rarepairnation came up with it while writing earth system history, a zukka fic with piandao as zuko's gay professor. when trying to find a character to be his husband, she landed on jeong jeong, and then decided to go explore that dynamic with spark from a flame and we said forever (but forever wouldn't wait for us). i'd always liked both characters - i'm a sokka fan so of COURSE i like piandao, and i thought jeong jeong was fascinatingly tormented - so i was drawn in.
i think i'm still into it so many years later bc the storyline and characterizations established back then are legitimately really good. there's kind of a pianjeong "canon" to me:
they meet as young men in the fire nation military. young piandao is desperate to prove himself worthy (backstory from an old nickelodeon lore site says his parents abandoned him as a kid for being a nonbender) meanwhile young jeong jeong is a firebending prodigy (from that same lore site) vaguely uncomfortable with the status & privilege that grants him. they both crave what the other has
piandao brings a sword to a fire fight and wins. they both find the experience exhilarating - piandao is thrilled to be defeating a powerful firebender, and jeong jeong is thrilled to have someone stand up to him (spark from a flame, an old phenomenon)
they start a relationship of sorts, kept secret bc of the homophobia in the military (army dreamers)
jeong jeong deserts, leaving piandao behind (we said forever)
piandao eventually leaves the military too, traveling the world and learning the truth of the war (beyond your darkness)
they both independently end up in the white lotus
piandao offers jeong jeong a place to stay at his mansion after the war and they reconnect. it's been so long and so much has changed and jeong jeong definitely isn't in the right mental place to be in a relationship but slowly, he gets better and they get close again (i'm your light, ghosts, diary of the deserter)
like, is this kinda just two OCs in atlaverse? probably. but i think another reason i've been into it so long is that it allows me to engage with atla without always having to deal with the broader fandom discourses that frustrate me. i think atla is a pretty good show so the way fandom tends to want to change or ignore canon doesn't really appeal to me. i'd rather just play around in the universe! also i started writing a lot of pianjeong fic in 2020-2021 and tend to be a slow writer so i'm still working on it, and that keeps my interest alive.
so yeah. feel free to join us in old man yaoi if you like :)

Very unrelated, but has it ever happened to you that you've just watched/read something and you're like "Omg this was so good! So fun!" and then gone into the fandom tag to continue the silly little happy time and there's people starting discourse over things on the story that you didn't thought were that serious and it just ruins the silly little time? because if it wasn't obvious, that happened to me just now šŸ˜ and ofc I don't want to go into the comments and say why I disagree cuz it's just not worth the energy but yeah... The happy chemicals went down. You've been in fandom for a long while, how do you handle this kinda stuff? How do you keep the silly little time going after reading nasty comments? Maybe I'm just too emotional but... Yeah
Ugh what a bummer anon, I feel you! Iā€™ve been there one too many times (the MCU fandom was especially unbearable after Civil War was released) and itā€™s always disheartening to feel those happy chemicals evaporate like that. Iā€™m usually on the ā€œitā€™s not that seriousā€ side of things because Iā€™m here to have fun, but every now and then I come across extensive essays dedicated to analyze in detail everything thatā€™s wrong with a fic, trope or fandom perception and its ~massive~ impact on real life dynamics, and Iā€™m like hmm ok time to disengage now šŸ˜‚āœŒšŸ¼
Walking away is the one thing that is under my control so I donā€™t really have any tips besides try to curate your experience as much as you can, and surround yourself with like-minded people so you can hype fics to each other and also vent about these situations every now and then. If thereā€™s anything Iā€™ve learned after so many years of fandom is how deeply personal and subjective the fandom experience is, because itā€™s informed by our cultural background and past experiences. My opinions differ even from friends with almost identical fic tastes and thatā€™s 100% normal.
I usually avoid checking tags, comments and public convos about fics Iā€™ve really liked or disliked - itā€™s easier for me bc Iā€™m not on Reddit, tik tok or Discord servers - because I want my experience to be disconnected from external perceptions. Itā€™s a bit lonely sometimes, but it works well for me! I hope the frustration youā€™re feeling right now fades quickly to give place to more joy and enthusiasm for your next favorite read! šŸ’œ

ooo genuinely asking out of curiosityā€” what made you think there was a line for f1 rpf? In what way? I can kinda see it, I feel like thereā€™s some very very popular kinks/tropes and then others you donā€™t see.
Also Iā€™m not really into hockey rpf but Iā€™ve kinda perused and know you guys have the most incredible fic!! Iā€™m curious what are common tropes used in hockey rpf that you donā€™t see in f1? For example, I guess bc Iā€™ve been in the f1 circle for so long I almost forget how itā€™s not ā€œnormalā€ to have sooo much omegaverse hahah
oh anon, i have many thoughts. can i interest you in a readmore?
okay so full disclosure is that hockey rpf has had people trying to doxx authors who post kinks they don't like, so it's not like it's free of problematic readers. personally i've had people write posts about how i'm a disgusting freak for some of the tropes/kinks i've written--mostly xeno/weird biology stuff. i've written some satirical stuff about it rather than let it get me down because tbh there are prudes in any audience. at this point i just don't go seeking people who write hand-wringing think-pieces about how my friends and i are the scum of the earth because really it's rooted in internalized misogyny, kinkshaming, and inferiority complexes; i simply don't have the bandwidth. but discourse like this has chased many people out of the fandom or caused them to unceremoniously delete their work. frankly, i've gotten off relatively easily.
but on the flipside--and maybe this is just time spent in the fandom?? god i've been writing hrpf since 2017--i've got a fairly loyal following who will read pretty much anything i've written. like if i wrote something completely balls-to-the-wall unexpected, it'd probably still get at least 50-150 kudos just on spec. i have a fic where the pairing is so rare that it's the ONLY one in the tag, and it still has 59 kudos.
the thing is that there's sort of a distressing trend of young people becoming more and more puritanical because of the diminishing youth space on the internet. i'm not the first to notice this or talk about it, so i won't bother with going into detail. but connected to this is the idea that fandom is rather cyclical as older fans move on (not all, but some) and new, younger fans come in. therefore, with a new cycle of fans nowadays comes a new cycle of...that. so it's pretty much all fandoms experiencing this. we've all seen the ridiculous outrage at ao3's hosting of """problematic""" content. i think this internal policing is why there's a lot more out-there kink content in original fiction on ao3 compared to fanfiction.
um okay onto hockey vs. formula 1! i need you to take this with an ENORMOUS grain of salt but based on a very very very small sample size, the more kinky the fic, the less engagement it gets. on one hand, this is sort of to be expected, since kink by its nature lies outside what is normative or standard, ergo hopefully people only read it if it's something they want to, or at least are curious about.
from what i've seen so far, i don't think f1rpf is that kinky?? to me, omegaverse is...okay, well it's kinky, but i also think it's become a kind of standard. i remember when omegaverse was new, but now i feel like it's a sort of fandom standard, at least for explicit fics. (are there g-rated omegaverse fics??? i simply filter out any search results for non-explicit fics.) my most-kudosed fic on ao3 is omegaverse, and to me that implies an acceptance of the trope to the point where it's become normalized. but i think there's a reason for that.
generally i think kink in fic is a way to explore and critique the source material in a sexy way. like for example, sports rpf in general has a lot of genderplay, either through omegaverse, or rule 63, genderswap, gendercurse, mpreg, male lactation, etc. which makes sense because generally Big Sports tend to be male-oriented, misogynistic, transphobic, and extremely segregated. and conversely, fanfiction and slash-fiction spaces, in their contemporary iteration, are largely the opposite. so hockey rpf, formula 1 rpf, football rpf, etc. will likely have a large amount of kink that engages with that concept.
but i think there's a lot more stuff to critique in formula 1 that, at least from my brief experience, has gone untouched. and maybe i'm just missing it because it was in the early 2000s or the 1990s? bear with me...
car-fucking/car sex: this is maybe my number one concern. why aren't they having sex in/on/around the cars? or WITH the cars? during a race? post-race? as a warm-up/cool-down? as a way to connect to the car/build the car? (see: carva universe) not just their race cars but also their stables of road cars. hello?? and nobody reacted to my suggestion that there should be a cronenberg-crash au. why not.
adrenaline junkie bullshit: like full jackass stunt nonsense. escalation to completely dangerous levels. deep sea diving, mountain climbing, parachuting, throwing a bowling ball at someone's nuts, etc.
bdsm: there is SOME--really really good stuff--but i want MORE. the way half of them like getting strapped into the seat but the other half hate it? but also the way that the adrenaline junkie bullshit feeds into painplay. and like the Whole Entire Concept of Discipline is just sports sports sports all over.
power dynamics and sexual ownership: while most sport rpf deals with teams, f1/motor is more individual-based. a driver is virtually owned by their team and it's extremely hierarchical. it's what creates these intense rivalries and shifting loyalties. also the cost vs. income difference for the lower formulas vs. f1. idk i just think there should be fics where teams bring that into play for sex reasons.
age difference: some ships come with it built-in, of course. there's this legacy of mentorship that i've noticed which is sort of a combination of coach/player and agent/player. then there's engineers and team principals who also have rich opportunities. mechanics are also often older than the drivers. and owners, sponsors, ancient pundits? so like...fuck that old man??
idk there's just a lot of dark, gross stuff happening in formula 1 and i think it needs to be turned into disgusting (affectionate) sex.
i am accepting recs, and i don't care what pairing it is.
that all being said, and at this point i'm second-guessing every single sentence i've written here, there's still a ton of new younger fans coming in. you can look at the charting of most popular pairings across the past 10 years or so and see it happening. and please don't get me wrong: the cycle of fandom is actually necessary and i love to have fresh writers and readers involved! just that, well.
if i've been in a fandom for x-number of years, i'm going to have to theoretically get more and more creative in order to produce something fresh and different. so unless i want to write some long, well-researched, plot-heavy character exploration through the romance genre, i'm here suggesting that we put a gearshift up someone's ass. okay? okay. but new writers don't need to necessarily go that far. so it's gonna be more tame, more vanilla. less kinky. and likewise, less willing to take a chance on a bit of strange.
