the official translation for aa:i collection referencing names/quirks of the fanmade translation is simultaneously insane to think about and incredibly in character for the series.

the sheer idea of a fanwork being so impactful on the series as a whole that the official release alludes to those choices of localization seems like the complete opposite of the dynamic you'd expect, but the reality is that this is just an inherent quality of ace attorney as a series.

the next best example is probably way back when one such change in the trial and tribulation fantranslation was referenced, despite it being unfinished and scrapped the moment Capcom USA so much as acknowledged the possibility of bringing the game to the west

also worth mentioning the remasters actively trying to repair any mention of 'sherlock' in the series specifically after the release of western great ace attorney

Rachel and Calypso both serve as opposing love interests to Annabeth that in the end would have not worked out in story because their relationships were both built off of Percy attempting to run away from a fundamental aspect of himself; being a half-blood.

The overarching theme of the original 5 pjo books is Percy coming to accept and ultimately choose this part of himself. In this essay I will-

one of the subtle details that I personally find fun in PJO is how Percy spends like two books noting how Annabeth is taller than him, and then finally that he hit a growth spurt and ended up taller than her. and also the note about how later, he’s one inch shorter than Jason. Percy’s totally just a tad bit insecure about his height.

but then there’s a subtle implication in all of that of Percy possibly finally ending up taller than Annabeth because he started going to CHB. Like, there’s some implication that Annabeth is tall to begin with (particularly given how Magnus is described as tall, it’s probably family genetics) and that she’s very physically fit from growing up at CHB, but also we know that CHB has the whole food thing where all the food at CHB is like, all-natural and whatever. And we know that Percy grew up with Sally struggling financially and Gabe explicitly neglecting him. So there’s that secondary implication that Percy finally hit his growth spurt after he got regular access to some nice good-quality food :,)

Thinking about how Rick Riordan included a thoroughly researched, nuanced, complicated and likeable Muslim main character in the Magnus Chase series who explained how she squared her Islamic faith with the Norse gods, celebrated the holidays, and observed the traditions... and a throwaway Jewish character in the Trials of Apollo who LITERALLY LIVES IN THE CONTINUATION OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE and never even comments on that or explains how she feels about that. Lavinia literally serves in the Twelfth Legion Fulminata, which saw action in the First Jewish-Roman War. But no, all we get is her commenting that her rabbi was weirded out by her bringing a girl to her Bat Mitzvah. Plus her wearing a Magen David. That's literally it.

The difference between the effort put into two fairly substantial characters in the Riordanverse is frustrating to no end. It's one of my many problems with the Trials of Apollo series. No discussions of the halachic implications of the Greco-Roman gods existing? How about the fact that she's not matrilineal—did she convert? Is she Reform? Does she feel imposter syndrome? Does she feel that Camp Jupiter is different from the old Roman Empire and its antisemitism? Is she religious or observant? Who knows! The equivalent questions are all answered in Samirah's case, but not Lavinia's.

Are Jews destined to only ever see representation as martyrs in Holocaust fiction or secular Jews who offhandedly mention an ostentatious Bar Mitzvah and Hanukkah?
