But what if Snake pushed Trixie off the cliff?
Speed's angst over watching his girlfriend go over a cliff aside, there's many variables to consider.
For starters, Trixie goes over. The Kwik save is activated and she's save. What next? I would assume there's some sort of patrol or first response that goes out and collects the DNF drivers. Perhaps the authorities find her and learn about the switch. Would this disqualify the Togokahn team? Or maybe Horuko and Taejo get to Trixie first. Trixie and Taejo switch places and the authorities find Taejo who "crashed." And what even are the rules for finishing the race. Do all team members have to cross the finish line? Or can Speed and X win it themselves?
Angst filled alternative. Trixie goes over and the Kwik save does not activate. Why? Some sort of malfunction? Or perhaps Snake tampered with it. Snake went into the race wanting to take out Taejo, so before the second leg he messed with Taejo's car. And in the mountains he saw an opportunity to take out Taejo and took it. But he doesn't know that Taejo switched places with Trixie. So he drives Trixie over the cliff and the Kwik save doesn't work. Trixie either survives, but is severely injured or dies.
But how do any of these scenarios affect the rest of the movie? Does Speed still race in the Grand Prix? What do you think about the above? Any ideas on what would happen? Did any of the above scenarios stand out to you?

Taejo: I’m sorry.
Horuko: Sorry for what?
Taejo: Sorry for making you put up with me.
Horuko: Yeah, that’s a valid apology.

THANK YOU! The Speed Racer movie was a fucking masterpiece precisely *because* the Sisters Wachowski had the grapefruit-sized brass monkey gonads to embrace the over-the-top cartooniness of that world—Day-Glo color schemes; groanworthy character names; automotive Wuxia; corny accents; ninja battles for the whole family; the pet chimp—and then *play it dead straight*, treating the infamously stilted English dubbing as if it were a highly stylized acting convention like Kabuki.

They actually knew what to do with 90% greenscreen too. It looks fake, but it looks cool instead of like the boring hot mess most films make of that.
One of the reviews at the time was like "the plot makes no sense", and I was enraged because this film has one of the best and most concise explanations of manipulating stock prices and why you'd do it. Sure, it's cheesy to pause the film for an epic villain speech and montage, but if there's one thing it isn't, it's unclear. THE BAD GUY LITERALLY TOLD YOU THE PLOT, REVIEWER! Were you in the bathroom or something?

Yeah, he's the largest of large hams, but who cares? It's great! (And also a pretty spot-on satire of the real versions of this dude who populate corporate America, albeit in much more boring suits.)
For me, THE UNASSAILABLE MIGHT OF MONEY ranks up there with that montage everybody loves from The Big Short.
The plot of Speed Racer is simple: big corporations have been fixing races for years to manipulate their stock prices to block or aid specific mergers and to boost the profile of their tech. Speed is an independent who wins because he loves his family and they work together.
People hated it because it absolutely is a sickening load of schmaltz straight out of Weekly Shounen Jump and not some darker and edgier bro film about how emotional attachments make you week.
I would personally have liked more of Rain and Hiroyuki Sanada and way less of Spritle--or at least less of his atrocious dialogue. A pity we never got that sequel where presumably Taejo and Horuko Togokahn would have shown back up. I want to know about their sketchy Korean-Japanese automotive empire! I want the family to find out the truth about Racer X. I want to watch Racer X beat up Taejo while wearing leather again. This movie was art, yo.

Speed Racer 2008 Headcanons
Because sure, why not
*Royalton is actually a multifacted conglomerate which deals with much more than automobiles, but Royalton Motors is their most profitable subsidiary. This is because-
*Car Racing is the most popular (and profitable) form of sport/entertainment in the world.
*Motorbike racing DOES exist, but it’s an underground activity which only happens locally, and, for the most parts, is illigal. As a whole, the Motorbikes market is much smaller and less profitable than the car industry.
*Speed actually understands the world as an agllamoration of physical forces and has a subconsious understanding of phsyics which helps him “understand” and “listen to” the car and the road. Also, racing is actually where the phsyical conditions are most straightfoward and clear, which is why he has that mid-racing clarity.
*Spritle never met Rex (as Rex and not Racer X), as he was born after his older brother’s “death” This, along with his young age, means he is the only person in the Racer family not to be burdened with the family’s trauma’s first hand.
*Spritle will never get a driver’s licence. I just don’t see it in his future.
*Chim Chim, however, will.
*Taejo and Haruku Togokahn are twins. Haruku is the older of the two. They actuallly care a lot about each other.
*Togokahn motors originally focused on Motorcycles, and moved into the Automobile market later.
*Sparky has a Masters in mechanical engineering. He works for Racer industries because A. the conditons are good B. Pops is generally the best mentor he could ask for.
*Royalton, as a company, survived the events of the movie.
*The BIC are actually a global agency.
IDK if they are in any shape or form anime-compatible but I like them
I think a lot about speed racer lately...

The Togokahn heir approached his track adversary, a firm declaration waiting to be made.
“I feel the need…” One hand raised, that cool countenance cracked and there emerged an amused grin.
“The need…for Speed.”
The moment the first half of the phrase left Taejo's mouth, the moment his hand rose, Speed mimicked the action, grinning wide, a flush high in his cheeks. Thousands of flashes from every kind of camera sparkled like diamonds all around them, all eyes on the pair, daring to interpret what might or might not have been between them.
"The need for speed!” Their hands met above their heads, somewhere between them and the cameras continued going off. One of them was quoting a film, the other... Well, that was up for debate. The tabloids would have a field day.
When Speed backed away, he still held Taejo’s hand, but this time in a friendly shake. “Good luck out there,” he said, with all sincerity, blue eyes sparkling with the delight of being on the track, with the prospect of a good, fair contest, and with... maybe a little something else. Who could say?

hey can you imagine being one of the other drivers that isn’t named during the Grand Prix Speed wins
like... you’re probably one of the ones who knows that the race is rigged and you’re ready to just stick behind the ones who are supposed to win this race so that your sponsors get paid
and then Speed Racer (legally) joins the race
and Royalton puts a million-dollar bounty on his head
he even says he’d prefer it if the kid didn’t make it out of the locker room
you’ve heard rumours about how he and his family fought off a ninja at Casa Cristo though so you decide not to try
that, and the kid’s eighteen. EIGHTEEN.
why would you put a bounty on someone so young?
the race starts and you’re not the one who attempts to false-start him, but you see him make a recovery and soon he’s racing against Royalton Industries’ car
you see briefly the spearhook jump and the RI car’s driver get Kwik-Saved, but you don’t see the kid eject
his car’s down, though, and you pity him
he was just trying to race, after all, even if he’s just exposed Royalton for his dirty tricks and destroyed Cannonball’s career
however, a few minutes later, your mechanics swear loudly over the radio
you ask them what they’re yelling about
they tell you that Speed Racer just kick-started his engine and is racing as if his life depends on it
you laugh at them
the kid got spearhooked, there’s no way he could’ve recovered
you realise a few moments later how wrong you are, when the Mach 6 literally FLIES over you on the almost-90-degree-drop
he ends up winning the race, because of course he does, and sends Royalton to jail with his win (and the ensuing investigation, indicting and imprisonment, but that’s not important)
you watch the race recording later on and see the exact moment that the kid changed everything, as his engine jumps back into life and he starts gliding
not driving, gliding, as if he is painting a MASTERPIECE
you testify against Royalton for the bounty he put on the kid’s head, but do so anonymously - the one who ends up testifying publicly is big enough to sentence him, since he is Taejo Togokahn of Togokahn Motors and his team (which, you realise, also had Speed Racer) won the Crucible
Speed Racer has just inspired the biggest change in racing history, and you have a feeling that he’s just getting started

Unresolved storylines.
Why did Taejo cheer for Speed? And what made him change his mind about testifying against Royalton and Cruncher Block?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that Royalton is behind bars, what becomes of Royalton Industries?
Tumblr media
Is there still a bounty out on Speed? If so, who's putting up the money?
Tumblr media
What became of Cannonball's career? Is he still racing for RI? Would there be another team willing to sponsor him?

Recently got the video game (Wii version) and it's absolutely wild. Been playing as Trixie (duh) and I'm pretty sure Delila has been flirting with "Trixie"
Also, you can make and break alliances. "Trixie" requested an alliance with Taejo, but he refused because "I can't trust anyone. Including you." Like, you little bitch. You're the one who betrayed the Racers, Taejo. Then "Trixie" request an alliance with Prince Kabala. Who's response was "You dress to poorly for me to handle." I nearly fell out of my chair. Why was that so fucking funny?
Last thing, I kind of want to know what happens if Trixie breaks an alliance with Speed. Should I try it?
