Speed Racer (2008)
I can understand why Speed Racer wasn't well-received in 2008. Having heard only negative things, I sat down with it fully expecting a catastrophe. It isn't. I’m not going to go so far as call it visionary, but it's certainly bold in its structure, visuals and direction. Like many of the Wachowski’s films, it has a lot to offer and if you go in with an open mind, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. You may even love it.
Based on the television series of the same name, itself based on the manga by Tatsuo Yoshida, 18-year-old Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) has been obsessed with racing his entire life. After his brother dies during the Casa Cristo 5000, Speed embarks on his own racing career when he is approached by E.P. Arnold Royalton (Roger Allam), owner of conglomerate Royalton Industries. Speed declines the corporation’s luxurious offers and now, the family must band together to win the Grand Prix, or lose everything to the corporate giant.
If there had been even a drop of cynicism in the 135-minute running-time, Speed Racer would've crashed and burned. Like its protagonist, the film is determined to see itself through. This picture is wild even before we get to the unusual editing, story and structure. Speed’s parents (Susan Sarandon and John Goodman) run an independent company called Racer Motors along with their youngest son, Spritle (Paulie Litt) and his pet chimpanzee Chim Chim. You’d expect the kid sidekick and his monkey to be cheap comic relief, but they’re integral parts of the story. They're never annoying because their presence never hinders Speed. Also living in their home is their mechanic Sparky. No one is ever taken aback by this or the various costumed racers participating in the multiple races seen throughout. It makes for a bizarre kind of world with its own logic you just get into. After the initial shock settles, you're surprised that the seemingly simple relationships and characters expands as the film goes. The whole thing is a cartoon, but what a cartoon it is.
Once Speed gets into his Formula One car and puts the pedal to the metal, it’s like he’s driving down that corridor of light at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s a dazzling, dizzying burst of twists, turns and sweeps so incredible they’re nearly overwheleming. It moves so fast you wish you could slow it down and catch everything, but the fact that you can’t is what makes it fantastic. The Wachowskis have thrown the rulebook on how to make a racing movie out of the window and by leaving the beaten path, they’ve reinvented moving vehicles on-screen with Speed Racer.
For the three impossible, big, flashy courses featured, the picture is worth seeing but there’s much more for you here. It’s unconventional, at times a little bit too wild, but when placed in this world that looks like a cross between a Terry Gilliam project and Lazytown, you accept it. The film is packed to the brim with moments that further develop the relationship between Speed and his family but never at the expense of the white-knuckle racing. A perfect example is in the very first competition. Speed gets so far ahead of his competitors he come face-to-face with his brother’s ghost. Not a spirit; a digital hologram of the best driver who’s ever been on that track. In the moments that follow, we learn how good Speed is at driving by comparing him to the record holder. We see how long the record has held so we understand just how big a deal it is. We get a display unlike any we’ve seen before and come to understand how much Speed respects, misses, admires and loves his brother all at once.
Speed Racer displays such imagination in its structure and racing sequences. While the film is sometimes difficult to follow because of its no-holds-barred approach, I think it may be one of the best racing film’s I’ve ever seen. (On DVD, April 7, 2018)

January 24, 2021: Speed Racer (2008) (Part 1)
Car Action Weekend Concludes!
Anime! As I’m sure Tumblr is aware, Japan’s most famous television format has spread far and wide, especially in the United States. It started on American TV with Astro Boy in 1963. A few series premiered after that, but one of the series that made the biggest splash was a little show about a boy, his girlfriend, his friend, his father, his little brother, and his little brother’s chimpanzee.
Oh, also cars or something.
Mach GoGoGo, AKA Speed Racer in the USA, was a classic series about car racing, with wacky enemies, crazy cars, and about a year’s worth of runtime. Still, it lasted for YEARS, to the extent that I remember watching it at some point in the early 2000s! But I didn’t grow up with it. The Wachowskis, however, might have.
Oh yeah, it’s THESE gals. Directors and creators of the Matrix, the Wachowskis were looking to direct a more family-friendly movie, and hopped onto a Speed Racer adaptation that’d been in development for years. Since 1992, Warner Bros had been trying to bring the enigmatic racecar driver to life, with Johnny Depp as the lead...in 1995.
He left, though, and actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shia LaBeouf, and Zac Efron would be considered over the years. For the director, Julien Temple, Gus Van Sant, Alfonso Cuaron, and Hype Williams were recommended. Eventually, though, the Wachowskis would accept the job, and Emile Hirsch was brought into the project, alongside a surprising cast. But, we’ll get there.
So why Speed Racer for this month? Why not save this for Sports November? Or, better yet, why watch this at all? Honestly...I wanted to do this one. Mostly because in recent years, it’s become controversial with reviewers and critics. Why? Well, lets get into it, rather than explain here! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
Speed Racer - yes, Speed Racer (Emile Hersch), that is his ACTUAL NAME - is awaiting an upcoming race, when we get a glimpse into his past. A distracted kid at school, much to the dismay of his mother, Mom (Susan Sarandon), he’s not doing great at school, thinking only about races and his brother, Rex (Scott Porter).
In a legitimately neat touch, he daydreams being in a race, with the original Speed Racer theme song playing in the background. His daydream is bright and colorful, and looks like it’s drawn by a little kid. Which is funny, because the entire movie has a cartoon aesthetic, it turns out.
We’ll see if I get used to THAT. He gets in the car with Rex, and they go to the RIDICULOUS racetrack, holy shit. It’s like Mario Kart in here. From the track, we transition to the modern day. The world is watching, as Speed Racer tears up the track, and also as I GET A SEIZURE GAAAAAAAAH. This is an insanely colorful world with some very confusing and complicated visuals. This movie is...something, that’s for sure.
During the race, we find out that something happened to Rex 8 years ago, during which Rex set the track record. We also meet his girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), father, Pops (John Goodman), brother Spritle (Pauline Litt), and...chimpanzee, Chim Chim (Willy and Kenzie, interchangeably, YES I CREDITED THE CHIMPS). Speed Racer. I keep forgetting that this is Speed Racer.
More flashbacks to the past show us how Trixie and Speed met, as well as a STRAIGHT UP MURDER ATTEMPT WHAT
Whoof; cutthroat business, that racing stuff. Rex leaves Racer Motors as a result, and leaves Speed his car, apparently turning to the dark side by taking out other racers with increasingly dirty tactics. This lasted until a brutal crash that apparently killed him. But, if you know your Speed Racer mythos even a little...
Back to the race, where Speed is about to beat his brother’s record, but purposely slows down just enough. In any case, he wins the race, as a shadowy figure that totally isn’t his alive brother watches on.
The next morning, the family, Trixie, and road manager Sparky (Kick Gurry) are having breakfast. They’re interrupted by E.P. Arnold Royalton, esq. (Roger Allam), an executive who’s come to recruit Speed, proposing to act as a sponsor for not just Speed, but for Racer Motors. While Pops isn’t inclined to sign up with a big company, Royalton’s offer is intriguing enough for them to go to MY EYES!!!!
OH CHRIST MY EYES WHAT THE HELL
OK, look, this film is gorgeous, and also looks like Robert Rodriguez’s imagination vomited all over the screen. Seriously, I appreciate the artistry here, but...OW. And this ENTIRE SEQUENCE is an exercise in my visual tolerance for 2008-era graphics and ridiculously bright colors.
The Racers are taken for a dizzying journey through Royalton Industries, and my entire brain is melting, God. After the tour, Pops tells Royalton that, while his money intimidates him, he’s open to an alliance between RI and Racer Motors. And then, we transition from the bright and poppy world of Royalton Industries, to -
YO WHAT??? Talk about a complete opposite tone! This crime boss, Cruncher Block (John Benfield), is beating and torturing a driver, Taejo (Rain), and he’s pretty obviously bloodied. Before feeding Taejo’s hands to his pet CGI piranhas (yes, really), they’re interrupted. Also, did I mention that this office is INSIDE OF A MOVING TRUCK WHAT.
The intruder is the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox), who takes down their battle truck with his car’s weaponry. And I gotta say, this is a neat, if extremely wacky, battle sequence. Cruncher throws Taejo out of the truck, only for Racer X to save him and try to recruit him to stop Cruncher. He might be a bit of a vigilante, it would seem.
While Speed and Trixie have a romantic getaway - which is spoiled by an intruding Spritle and Chim Chim - a shady deal between Royalton and a competitor is taking place, revealing that he isn’t entirely on the up-and-up. The next day, Speed meets with Royalton, thinking on signing the contracts. He decides not to, citing an interaction with his father from shortly after Rex’s death, and stating that he couldn’t abandon his family like that.
Royalton’s not very happy about that, though, and taps into his inner Tim Curry something FIERCE. He monologues on the invention of the modern racing league, as well as the financial implications of races through history. In other words, racing’s about power and money, and he reveals that races like the Grand Prix are rigged from the get-go. And SMACK-DAB in the middle of that villain monologue:
A sugar high. The editing of this film is hyperactive, I swear. Forgot to mention that Spritle and Chim Chim snuck into RI with Speed to steal candy - yes, really - and discover that the cars being built by RI have dirty tricks literally built in. Speed turns Royalton down, and Royalton tells him that Speed won’t win or even place in the next race, which we cut to immediately.
Taejo from earlier is racing, and gets in a crash that he somehow survives? Speed also crashes and loses, as predicted by Royalton, which destroys the Mach 6. This leads to Racer Motors being sued for copyright infringement, disgracing them in the media. He also speaks to Ben Burns (Richard Roundtree), one of his racing heroes, and finds out that his classic race was indeed rigged in his failure. This, of course, breaks Speed’s racing spirit.
After a pep talk from Mom, Racer Motors gets a visit from Racer X and Inspector Detector (Benny Furmann), who ask Speed for help. Taejo’s asked them for help, but only if Racer X and Speed help. Unfortunately, the race is on the same dangerous track that Rex died on. However, if they win, it will cause trouble for the crime boss Crusher and his secret ally, Royalton. While Pops fiercely objects, Speed goes in secret, with Trixie as support.
Speed finally wears the classic Speed Race outfit while in the classic car, they go to the race track, and I STROKE OUT AGAIN GODDAMIVWHBROVQJQ
youtube
And somehow THIS IS ONLY HALF OF THE GODDAMN MOVIE. See you in Part 2!

The Wachowskis Reviewed #4: Speed Racer (2008)
Adapting the long running manga of the same name, the Wachowskis give us Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch), a competitor in the dayglo bonkers world of the World Racing League. Racing for his father Pops (John Goodman), and living in the shadow of his brother Rex (Scott Porter), he soon attracts the attention of major sponsor E.P Arnold Royalton (Roger Allam). When the world of high stakes racing turns out to be far from what it seems to be, he joins the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) in a campaign to root out the rampant corruption within the World Racing League.
It took me three attempts to watch Speed Racer in it’s entirety. The movie opens with an assaulting fifteen minute expositionary montage built around the conceit of Speed racing his brother’s lap record. The design is eye-searing here, and the film jumps back and forth between Speed’s lap and the important moments of his life with an unrelenting momentum. It’s brutal to watch, but it’s indicative of just how committed the directors are to bringing you into this world. We learn about Speed’s obsession with racing, his girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci), and his brother’s downfall. It sets the tone for the neon soaked cartoon action to come, but it’s a hell of a thing to sit through.
Once this is over and done though, the film is able to set a decent pace. A LOT happens here, with a remarkably convoluted story about corporate crime for a kids movie. There’s also a good number of character moments, with some wonderfully poignant exchanges between Speed and each of his parents to underscore the thing.
The most remarkable thing about Speed Racer is just how earnest it is. Speed’s dad is literally called “Pops”, and his comic relief brother has a pet/partner-in-crime chimp, and there is a policeman called Inspector Detector. And yet absolutely everybody is committed to telling this story about how greed is trumped by love and skill and passion. Where in tearing down the curtains others may have failed to convince that the conceit of the day is anything other than arbitrary, the Wachowskis are driven to ensure that we know the value of racing to these people, and so see how they claim it back from it's corporate masters.
It’s quite common for faithful revisits of older shows to be beholden to the sensibilities of the time the original material was made. Which is to say, they are usually filled with straight white men. That’s the case in Speed Racer, although Christina Ricci’s Trixie does get a cool moment out on the road. More significantly, Nan Yu’s Horuko- sister of racer Taejo (Rain)- has her ostensibly minor role proves pivotal to the climax, and the subversion of the expected fallout of her actions reinforces the themes of the film. It’s a great example of the Wachowskis’ ability to take a minor and predictable character and use them for something great. Also, Richard Roundtree is in it.
Look back at the contemporary reviews of Speed Racer and you’ll find much talk of the effects, and how annoying they are. Viewed now, it Speed Racer feels like it is not so much aiming for any verisimilitude but rather trying to embrace and elevate that aesthetic of ‘bad CGI’. Just as modelwork and puppetry have their charms, Speed Racer seeks to illustrate that simplistic ray-tracing and crude textures can have the same. It may not work for you but it’s certainly an interesting use of this technology that is so important to modern cinema.
It’s worth noting that the entire movie was shot against a green screen. Viewed with that understanding- and knowledge of how well the same approach worked in the Star Wars prequels just a few years earlier- the believably of the performances is remarkable. John Goodman is the standout here, although the comic sensibility of Paulie Litt as Spritle is fantastic, as is his chemistry with Willie and Kenzie, the chimps playing Chim-Chim. Roger Allam returns from V for Vendetta. This is the first Wachowskis film to feature Kick Gurry, and it won’t be the last time we see the slimy work of the man I shall call “The Guzza”.
Speed Racer is not the greatest Wachowski film, and if you start it you may well find yourself struggling to finish it. But it is great example of what they do, reveling in the joy of tropes and conventions while subverting and elevating them to say something profound.
Tim

Cinematic Comic Characters Ranked! (Year 2008) Part One
Wow, I just want to say that 2008 really stepped it up when it came to comic movies released. Granted, a couple weren’t the best but overall this year was one of the best out of the bunch. The Dark Knight and Hellboy II: The Golden Army are the only sequels this year, while The Punisher: War Zone and The Incredible Hulk serve as reboots. Star Wars: The Clone Wars serves as a prequel and we also see the debut of Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Spirit and Wanted! Lets start off our largest list yet! Here’s #82-61!
*SPOILERS FOR THE HIGHLIGHTED MOVIES ABOVE*
Cameo Appreciation: Stan Lee (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk)
Stan Lee graces the movie screen twice this year in Incredible Hulk and in Iron Man. In Incredible Hulk, he cameos as as a common man that ends up getting sick from drinking a soda contaminated with Bruce's blood. In a not so tragic role in Iron Man, Stan plays an infamous playboy that Tony Stark greets at one of his parties.
Cameo Appreciation: Nick Fury (Iron Man)
The director of SHIELD finally makes his appearance in a post credits scene of Iron Man. In it, he tells Tony Stark that he isn't the only superhero in the world and that he's just entered a universe so big, he couldn't possibly understand.
Cameo Appreciation: Tony Stark, Lou Ferrigno, Rickson Gracie (The Incredible Hulk) Besides Stan Lee, The Incredible Hulk gives its viewers three more little fun appearances. Lou Ferrigno returns as a security guard but this time once that works for Betty's jon that's easily bribed with pizza. Rickson Gracie, the jiu-jtsu master, appears as the martial arts trainer that helps Bruce control his anger when he's in Brazil. The biggest cameo, though, came from Tony Stark, who shows up at the end of the movie to criticize Colonel Ross for not listening to him. He ends the movie by revealing he's putting together a team, a special team.
Cameo Appreciation: Professor Broom (Hellboy II: The Golden Army)
Honestly I still haven't gotten over Professor Broom's from the first movie so I had a sad pout when he appeared on the screen in a flashback to when he raised Hellboy as a child. Turns out Professor Broom would read Hellboy the legend of the Golden Army as a bedtime story, which Hellboy thinks back to when said army almost destroys the world several years later.
Cameo Appreciation: Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow (The Dark Knight)
At the beginning of the film, Scarecrow makes his return, still selling drugs that makes the user see their most darkest fears. He's quickly stopped by Batman, which shows how much the caped hero has grown since the last time we saw him.
82. Maginty (Punisher: War Zone)
"You're a fucking saint."
Just a guy who works for Jigsaw that spends his time doing parkour all around New York while laughing for no damn reason. When Punisher goes after Jigsaw, he blows up Maginty's friends and shoots out his knees to get him to talk. Once he gets what he wants, he throws Maginty off the building.
81. Leonard Sampson (The Incredible Hulk)
"You know, it's a point of professional pride for me that I can tell when someone's lying."
Leonard isn't the first nice guy that's had to compete with a superhero for a girl's affections, but he definitely is one of the most forgettable. Usually when a girl's superhero ex-boyfriend reappears into her life, she ends up having an internal struggle deciding between the two men, but it's clear Betty wants Bruce from the get go and Leonard lets her. He's a psychiatrist after all so he probably saw it coming.
80. Mahoud (The Spirit)
"What's the password, sweetheart?"
Like most of the guys at the bottom of this list, Mahoud is the next guy to date the hero's main love interest after the two broke up. Mahoud is Sand's husband and does a lot of dirty work for her as she searches for Jason's Golden Fleece. Like the rest of her previous husbands though, he dies mysteriously under her watch.
79. Mr. X (Wanted)
"Never send sheep to kill a wolf."
So we see this guy do some awesome assassin tricks like jumping in between buildings at super speed and killing people like no tomorrow, but he's quickly taken out by Cross shortly after. The whole time after that we're made to believe that he's Wesley's father, only to find out he's actually not and was just another target Cross had to bring down.
78. Octopus's Henchmen (The Spirit)
"We was watching."
These guys were probably the only characters that annoyed me in the film but that's because they were made that way. Octopus's henchmen are dumb clones that do his bidding. They have ridiculous names like 'Adios' and 'Huevos' and all of them have a crush on Silken. They're able to survive getting hit by trucks but they can be killed and eventually Octopus runs out of clones during the final gunfight with the Spirit.
77. Coleman Reese (The Dark Knight)
"I want 10 million dollars every year, for the rest of my life."
This Wayne Enterprises employee isn't that big of a deal but he does figure out Batman's true identity. At first he tries to blackmail, but Lucius Fox quickly shuts that down, then he decides to go to the media after people keep dying due to Batman's refusal to reveal himself. Again he's shut down, but this time by The Joker who threatens to blow up a hospital if he isn't killed. After nearly dying three times in the span of an hour and then getting saved by Bruce himself, Coleman decides to stay silent.
76. Abu Bakaar (Iron Man)
"Shoot this dog!"
While Raza was still trying to be mysterious and not show his face, Abu Bakaar played as his second in command and was the one who explained to Tony what he was expected to do. He's leading a raid and about to kill innocent people when Tony shows up as Iron Man. He defeats everyone, leaving Abu weaponless and surrounded by the very citizens he was going to kill.
75. Angela and Grace Donatelli (Punisher: War Zone)
"He said you were one of the good guys."
Angela and Grace are the wife and daughter of Nicky, a secret agent accidentally killed by Punisher. They get caught up in Punisher's life and get taken hostage and nearly die several times by his enemies, Jigsaw and Looney Bim Jim. When Punisher saves them one last time, Angela forgives him for her husband's death.
74. C-3PO and R2D2 (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
"I knew you were in danger!"
R2D2 spends the whole film in the background helping out Anakin and Ahsoka as they go on a mission to save Jabba the Hutt's baby son. He's able to come in and save the pair at the last second several times for them t complete their mission. C-3PO is still serving Padme and i's him she contacts when she's imprisoned by Ziro the Hutt. He rallies the clone troops to help aid her escape and capture Ziro.
73. Stanley (The Incredible Hulk)
"You know how I felt about you two."
Stanley is a sweet old man that runs a pizza parlor that comes to Bruce's aid when he returns to America. He obviously cares about both Bruce and Betty so it's so apparent that he wasn't going to lie to Betty about Bruce not returning, especially because I think he's always shipped them together.
72. Mace Windu (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
"The Jedi will be ready."
Mace Windu took a huge backseat role in this film. Hardly in it but still a strong ally in the ultimate space war. As one of the higher ranking Jedi, he leads his own team to try to take down Count Dooku's forces, while still sporting his original purple lifesaber.
71. Paul Budiansky (Punisher: War Zone)
"You have the right to shut the fuck up!"
Like Jim Gordon, Paul Budiansky is a good cop who tries to stop the Punisher at first but then ends up helping him in the end. Only, he's more boring and he doesn't do anything worthwhile besides starting a gang war to give Punisher a distraction to take out Jigsaw.
70. Palpatine/Darth Sidious (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
"Everything is going according to plan."
Knowing that Palpatine becomes Darth Sidious just makes him even more annoying to look at every time he shows acting like he's a good senator that's only fighting for the best of his people. Since things work out in his favor in the end, it's safe to say that I wasn't really surprised that no one was able to catch on to his betrayal.
69. Plaster of Paris (The Spirit)
"I am Plaster of Paris, and I stick to my man 'til death do us part!"
Plaster of Paris is a belly dancer by day, Octopus's assassin by night. She's the one hired to end The Spirit's life, but his charm gets her as well and she ends up freeing him instead. She ends up realizing his interest in Sand though, so she stabs him in an alley and takes off to find a new man to latch to.
68. Cathy, Barry, and Janice (Wanted)
"Jesus H. Fucking Popsicle!"
These three individuals make up Wesley old, sad life. We have Janice, his bitchy boss who constantly nags on him and makes him feel like shit, and then there's Cathy and Barry, Wesley's girlfriend and best friend who are actually sleeping together behind his back (only he knows). When Wesley becomes a new man, he takes them all down a peg. First up is Janice, who he embarrasses in front of the entire office before slamming a keyboard in Barry's face. Then, after he completes his first kill, he returns to his old apartment to slam a door in Barry's face and then make out with Fox as he ignores the complaining of a jealous Cathy.
67. Bethmoora Goblin and the Angel of Death (Hellboy II: The Golden Army)
"I have done what I can, now give him a reason to live."
With Hellboy on the brink of death, the rest of the team find the Bethmoora goblin and get him to help locate Prince Nuada. Along the way, he introduces him to the Angel of Death, who tells Liz that Hellboy is destined to bring the destruction of the earth before bringing him back to life.
66. Lorelei (The Spirit)
"You're so close, you'll have me forever."
Another Angel of Death, Lorelei has been after one particular soul for years, Denny's. He's managed to escape her as The Spirit since he can't die, but she's always waiting and calling out to him. When he very nearly dies she manages to get him in her arms but after a good make out session he breaks away and returns to the living.
65. E.P. Arnold Royalton (Speed Racer)
"Pancakes are love."
The main villain, who's only intimidating because he owns a powerful company in the racing industry and has all the money in the world to make the corrupt racers do all his biding. He doesn't do anything that really makes him menacing, he mainly just fails to stop Speed from winning races over and over again. In the end his corruption is made public and he goes to jail.
64. King Balor (Hellboy II: The Golden Army)
"What the humans do is in their nature. To honor the truce is in ours."
King of the fairies, first commander of the Golden Army. King Balor originally created to Golden Army to defend his people but when it caused more death, he locked the army away and separated the crown into three pieces to continue peace. His intentions were good, wanting to live in harmony with the humans, but his son saw things differently. King Balor sentencing Prince Nuada to death gets more intense once you realize he was also sentencing his daughter to death by doing so, but Nuada slays King Balor's entire guard before killing him as well.
63. Linus Lieberman/Microchip (Punisher: War Zone)
"In any war, there's collateral damage."
Microchip is Punisher's sidekick that not only gives him all the Intel he needs on his targets, but also heavily supplying him with the weapons. He truly believes in what Castle does and always manages to get him to stick around for one more mission. Too bad it ends up getting him and his mom dead, even if he's ok with it for the sake of the mission.
62. Horuko Togokahn (Speed Racer)
"You're wrong. It is them who will learn a lesson."
Taejo's little sister isn't too important, but her life was in as much danger her brother's which is why she joins the team during the Casa Cristo 5000. She gets in on the action when she takes helps take down Royalton's thugs and when she flies Trixie's helicopter. When father and brother trick Speed, she's the one that shows up and gives him her brother's invitation to the Grand Prix.
61. Ziro the Hutt (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
"It was Count Dooku's idea!"
Ziro reminded me of two Disney characters. All of these bills have the same serial number. Now I know this is just movie prop money, but it's funnier to think Royalton payed the Sempre Fi-Ber drivers with counterfeit bills.
