20 Questions For Fanfic Writers

Thanks to @meteormemoirs for tagging me! Uh… I always feel a little weird tagging people but um, @rachywritessomething @faejilly @fenrir-kin @theloversthedreamersandme82 (and anybody else who'd like to join in – yes this means you!)

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

11 (though two of them ended up partially incorporated into a much bigger fic.)

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

388,370

3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

“In The Garden” (252) “Ineffable Bastards” (160) “Serpents & Ladders” (122) “The Key” (96) “Nature vs Nurture” (95)

4. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

No hate, but a few comments that felt disparaging about the complexity of my biggest fic. And I have received unsolicited “suggestions” for my word choices because they didn’t know the definitions of the words I used. And instead of asking me if I meant that word first, they just jumped right to the assumption that I was *wrong* and decided to “correct” me. -_- So I corrected them and left the comments up as a warning for others.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I love responding to (most) comments, even if it’s just with a <3 to let people know I’ve seen it. I really love seeing people get excited about something I’ve made and then I get to be excited about it with them. It’s the best. <3

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, that’s “Ask Not For Whom The Bell Tolls (It Tolls For They)” for absolute sure. It made me sob when I wrote it (and it was going to be angstier! but I couldn’t bear to do it) and it makes me blubber any time I reread it.

7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Weeeeell, technically it’s not finished yet but "Ineffable Bastards" will have a happy ending!

8. Do you write crossovers?

I’m not 100% certain about the terminology but "Ineffable Bastards" and the rest of the fics in that universe are probably crossovers? Or a fusion? It’s between Good Omens and Discworld, with the Discworld characters living on Earth in the GO universe.

9. Do you write smut?

I have but I haven’t ever gotten it to a point that I’m willing to publish it. Maybe one day.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated? Or turned into podfic?

Not yet, but @fenrir-kin did read a couple of my short works on their Twitch channel, that was really awesome!

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I haven’t but it sounds like fun.

13. What’s your all-time favorite relationship (doesn’t have to be romantic)?

Right now, it’s 100% Aziraphale and Crowley both as friends and as eventual romantic partners.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

15. What are your writing strengths?

Thinking about all the little details of worldbuilding to keep the internal logic ticking. I think I’m pretty good with dialogue and description, and I try my damnedest to keep them in character.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Mostly getting in a bad place and not writing. I also tend to reveal too much and have to go back and trim things down to keep the story flowing. Overthinking things and waffling about what to keep and what to trim.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I don’t know any other languages so I just write it in english (derogatory) and imply they’re using another language and add in if others can understand them or not. I’m getting myself out of the habit of italicising to imply foreign language since it feels outdated, and it can be confusing since I use italics to denote internal thoughts.

18. What’s the first fandom you wrote for?

Good Omens (sprinkled liberally with Discworld references) ...in 2019. Since smashing Valdemar Companions and Pern dragons together like playdoh and reforming them into my own creations as a teenager doesn’t legally count as fanfic :}

19. What are your favorite tropes/scenarios to read or write?

Oh ho ho! Friends To Lovers, Starcrossed Lovers, Pining (whole forests worth), Found Family, Gentle One Goes Librarian Poo For Their Beloved (x2 if it’s unacknowledged love) – I’m sure there are more but those are my top five lol

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

“Ineffable Bastards” is definitely my baby but I am also really proud of how “The Key” came out and they’re all part of the same universe so, are they really separate if they’re in a series?

Tumblr is being SO fucking STUPID RN! On PC, it’s seeing like 75% of my clicks as a double click, so when I go to like a post or unmute a video, it immediately reverses that action before said action even has a chance to take effect. And on my iPad, whenever I reblog a post, it gets stuck in that transparent navy transitional thingy and I can’t do anything except scroll a little on my now blue-tinted dash until I reload the page. GOD

is it gonna take that fucking long or are you actually nit-picking blogs to have it and leave the rest of us stuck in the sea of mud that YOU caused???

Hello visually impaired anon who sent someone else a message before, I saw your thoughtful response in comments and wanted to thank you for being open to accommodations for visually impaired rpers. I’m really not trying to make people feel bad just cause they want their posts to look good at all or feel responsible for the site not being optimized better for both sides, I’ve just been trying to spread awareness so more people in the rp community know visually impaired people like me occasionally try to read their posts and voicing being open to accommodating our needs can go a long way to making us feel more welcomed

I genuinely find it really flattering that you like reading our stuff, heehee!

It's just a shame that Tumblr isn't as much a functional website as it is a fucktional website, especially when it comes to accessibility. Hadn't it been for good old X-Kit, I bet things would be much worse.

You're doing amazing; I'm pretty sure many users just don't know better or don't imagine others may like reading their content, so you trying to spread awareness is a very good thing! Especially because I know most of us are genuinely very willing to help if we can once we're aware!

I personally prefer the smaller text because the default one just looks so big and in some strange way messy and overwhelming to me (sometimes it may even be a little anxiety-inducing, r.i.p. my ass,) while the smaller one looks cleaner and doesn't overwhelm me so much. I had no idea that the smaller text could be too small for some people-- though I definitely could see the combination of small+sub text which results in VERY tiny text being hard for many so I use it VERY sporadically. Besides sub, there was also sup text, but for some reason that one doesn't seem to work anymore

I know that the X-Kit extension "AccessKit" has some accessibility tools for user interface, including changing the site's font from Default to Serif or even OpenDyslexic, as well as some contrast and color tools and such. I personally think there should be a "Set Min and Max font size" tool to give visually impaired users total power to customize the size of fonts on their end. On the other hand I believe X-Kit is exclusively desktop-based so it still leaves mobile users out.

I remember a Chrome extension that allowed changes to Tumblr's font, but I had to reinstall my browser at some point so I lost it, also it didn't work very well on my end 'cause it clashed with other extensions.

I don't know if you're desktop or mobile-bound nor what browser you use, and I think it'd not prudent of me to ask. So what I can suggest you is to search your browser's store for accessibility extensions meant for Tumblr (and/or what other sites you frequent,) though I feel you may already know that. So I hope that getting this answer out may help you in spreading awareness at the very least!

Yesterday a post circled around tumblr and the OP was tired of the notifications they were receiving so they edited the photo to be a bondage picture of Timon from the Lion King and tumblr got it flagged for adult content and it disappeared.

Somehow. Tumblr has a system where the OP can edit a post, but won’t update the already reblogged posts, can find out that the post now has adult content on it and flag it, but won’t let users shut up notifications!!!

I won’t link to OP cause it’s clear they’re fuckin done with the attention.

All because tumblr was loosing their god damn mind over the fact that Riverdale is full of the most outlandish plot points such as(as I quote the original post): - Betty Cooper serial killer gene

- Cheryl coming to terms with her sexuality by watching Love Simon

- Archie’s decision of whether to do football or music getting equal importance as the murder plotline

- The whole show just being a longcon for the creator to make Archie gay because his play from the early 200′s about Archie being gay got him a cease and desist from Archie Comics

- No one cares that Jughead has skinned a woman.

Fucktional Website (no I did not misspell that).

If at all possible I’d prefer that people don’t submit posts from their mobile devices, because tumblr with the brilliant staff they have seemingly cannot allow you to edit a submission from mobile (and therefore give credit) without using the mobile app.

I will still post submissions that were sent by mobile but it will take longer, because I do 99% of my blogging on my desktop computer.
