Hoverfly There are over 200 species of syrphid, or hover- or flower flies, in Alaska. This is one of them. This adult is feeding on some cow parsnip pollen, but will also drink nectar. As such, it is a pollinator. Its coloration mimics that of bees, giving it some protection from other predators. The larval maggots eat decaying material of all sorts, as well as aphids, depending on the species. This hoverfly was occupied for a while so I was able to take many shots with different fields of depth, flash, &c. #hoverfly #syrphid #syrphidae #syrphidfly #flowerfly #cunninghamparkkenai #cunninghampark #cityofkenai #kenaialaska #kenai #cowparsnips #sonydschx400v #SonyCameras (at Cunningham Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRQKdtyhtmu/?utm_medium=tumblr

Margined Calligrapher (Toxomerus marginatus) in my backyard last week. These Flower Flies are very common in gardens and should be welcomed by all. Not only do they pollinate flowers, their young are predators of plant-feeding aphids. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #marginedcalligrapher #toxomerus #toxomerusmarginatus #flowerfly #flowerflies #syrphidae #syrphidfly #pollinatorgarden #gardenlife #diptera #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #backyardbiodiversity #insects_of_our_world #macroflower #macroandflora (at Simcoe, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRCBNmApYek/?utm_medium=tumblr

The last of my series of fly photos for now, a tiny hoverfly of sorts that for two weeks now has made a living perched upon a potted western yarrow flower in my greenhouse. I’ve had a delightful time shooting flies over the past month. To think that while I have photographed bees, years have gone by of ignoring them and their contributions, which are in the most humble of terms, extraordinary. It is often easy to credit bees with success of a garden or ecosystem, but flies play a part that is at least of equal importance. I am now convinced we owe them some respect, and certainly our admiration. ~~~~~~~~~#flies #syrphidfly #hoverfly #ecosystem #pollinators #naturalpestcontrol #flowerfly #pollinatorgarden #natgeoyourshot https://www.instagram.com/p/BpxxI03hLYF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=f8es1vrkm7v9

Drone Fly (Eristalis tenax) in Lambton Shores, October 2018. As Adults, Drone Flies feed on nectar and are thus important pollinators. As larvae, these Flies grow and feed in bacteria-heavy liquid environments, such as sewage, foul ditches and mucky puddles. The larvae have long breathing tubes that pierce the surface of their murky environments. This species of Fly has spread across the world from its European origin, thanks to the prevalence of such larval habitats around human agriculture. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #dronefly #eristalis #eristalistenax #fliesofinstagram #flyphotography #ontarioinsect #syrphidfly #syrphidaefly #flowerflies #flowerfly #insects_of_our_world #insectecology #insectgram #pollinatorsofinstagram (at Lambton Shores, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGzR2WEANW3/?igshid=186c9nnz980qq

Syrphid fly AKA hover fly AKA flower fly AKA a gardener’s BEST friend. Pollinators, yes, but despite its popularity no garden runs on pollination alone. Their youthful larval days are spent thrashing around the stems of aphid-infested plants, devouring the garden’s greatest enemy. This diminutive fellow is visiting a bloom of Catananche caerulea. Many thanks to @ribeswrench for working out a very difficult ID on this uncommon garden plant. ~~~~~~~#syrphidfly #hoverfly #pollinator #natgeoyourshot #catananchecaerulea #naturalpestcontrol https://www.instagram.com/p/BpcRJNShrgh/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=wsz6kqz8jfd4

Day 4 of #nationalpollinatorweek: This is not a Bee, but rather a species of Flower Fly (Family Syrphidae), the Narcissus Bulb Fly (Merodon equestris). The larvae of this fly develop inside the bulbs of plants in the Lily Family. Although their larvae feed on and damage plants, the adults mimic Bumblebees and visit flowers for nectar. Their mimicry includes a coat of fuzzy hairs, which is excellent for picking up and transferring pollen from flower to flower, making these yet another type of pollinator. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #syrphidfly #narcissusbulbfly #merodonequestris #eristalinae #flowerfly #hoverflies #hoverfliesofinstagram #hoverfly #gardeninsect #gardenfly #pollinatorweek #nationalpollinatorweek2020 #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #simcoeontario #backyardwildlife #macrophotography #invert_macro #macronature #macronaturephotography (at Simcoe, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB20U8eJSB4/?igshid=9wm5oify8zx3

Sometimes things are not what they seem. Look closely and you will discover that this is no bee. It's eyes are too big and round. It's antennae too short, it has only one wing on each side of its thorax, and its body too flattened. This is a syrphid fly, and this particular species is often mistaken for a honey bee. In fact, at the instant this image was taken, a dozen other honey bees were using the same plant. From a meter away, the similarities are startling–the two species were extraordinarily difficult to tell apart. Just like the insects it so resembles, this fly leads a life of visiting flowers for nectar and pollen. Its looks afford it the same reputation of a stinging bee, despite the fact it cannot sting. It's not only potential predators that are fooled–so often humans identify these as bees too. The connection is understandable, as they are masters of mimicry. As an added bonus to the wonderment they offer, syrphid flies also provide a great benefit to human agriculture, as their larvae consume aphids in gardens and orchards. Often apt to emerging in cooler weather than other aphid predators, they can be an effective early and late season aphid control option. #flowerfly #syrphidfly #beemimic #mimicry #macroworld_tr #show_us_macro #photooftheday #photoarena_nature #macro #canon70d
