Been driving myself insane trying to figure out whether this plant I've been seeing at my favorite birdwatching spot is common cowparsnip (native) or giant hogweed (invasive, causes horrific skin burns, needs to be immediately reported to the parks department). If any of you know how to reliably tell the difference between those then PLEASE DM me. No one on iNaturalist is helping.

These are definitely someone editing some goofy-ass AI flowers over real images of the Pacific coast. The first and fourth are the same location, notice the bridge with the road curving around the mountain.
Look at the sudden change in resolution here and the difference between real flowers (cowparsnip) and the fake jumble of petals
Tumblr media
Also compare the noisy parts of the real image to the noisy parts of the "meadow". The real image below is obviously just compressed, the direction of light and shadow on the rocks and water makes sense
Tumblr media
Below, the stems are just a jumble of repeated noise, the stems "bloom" from a singular point like a flower would in ways that conflict with reality
Tumblr media
I guess these in particular make me upset because these are real photos of the coast, and they are not "meant" to look like a perfect cottage core field of colors and shit. Appreciate the land for what it is. Not how you can change to to be more aesthetic. Also I do not doubt that the originals are stolen too. 🤷
Tumblr media
Also this tissue-paper fuckin "flower". C'mon.

Hoverfly There are over 200 species of syrphid, or hover- or flower flies, in Alaska. This is one of them. This adult is feeding on some cow parsnip pollen, but will also drink nectar. As such, it is a pollinator. Its coloration mimics that of bees, giving it some protection from other predators. The larval maggots eat decaying material of all sorts, as well as aphids, depending on the species. This hoverfly was occupied for a while so I was able to take many shots with different fields of depth, flash, &c. #hoverfly #syrphid #syrphidae #syrphidfly #flowerfly #cunninghamparkkenai #cunninghampark #cityofkenai #kenaialaska #kenai #cowparsnips #sonydschx400v #SonyCameras (at Cunningham Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRQKdtyhtmu/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Umbles” are flower clusters in which stalks of nearly equal length spring from a common center and form a flat or curved surface. They are a defining characteristic of the parsley family. Members of the parsley family are also known as umbellifers. Some well known umbellifers include carrots, celery, cumin, coriander, dill, fennel, and this plant, cow parsnip. 🥕 An easy reference you can use to remember the term “umbels” is that they look and sound like “umbrellas”. ☂ Many members, like the one illustrated, contain photo toxins that react with light and can give you severe blisters or a long-lasting rash. Oddly enough, when handled properly you can forage and use cow parsnip for many different dishes 😮 . . . . . . . . . #science #travelalaska #visitanchorage #hikealaska #gohikealaska #exploreyourwild #herbaceous #vegetation #cowparsnip #cowparsley #parsleyfamily #flora #nature #iscool #natureisbeautiful #scienceiscool #scienceisfun #scienceisawesome https://www.instagram.com/p/CIVqLqln77v/?igshid=qv286ufdr6ek

There's cow parsnip all around our campsite... and unlike poison ivy, I am not immune to it so I have to be careful to not get burns this weekend 😬 #cowparsnip #poisonousplants #nativeplants #wisconsinwildlife (at Red Cliff, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0ebd9QF1xT/?igshid=bcfs9r6behoo

Today I: Woke up, helped shovel up the last of the grass roots, applied for a job, went hiking with a friend and saw: cowparsnip (it smelled weirdly like french fries), western fence lizards (3 of them!), and pacific ring-necked snake! (very long and skinny!)

Delicate flowers of the cow-parsnips now in bloom. Take time to breathe in nature and absorb the landscape before photographing it. Science has proven that nature literally changes our body chemistry and how our brain functions. Taking a few minutes to "soak-up" nature will help you see things that may go unnoticed with a busy mind. There's a great link to National Geographic's story "This is Your Brain on Nature" in my profile. Enjoy the day! . . . #natureheals #transform #mindfulness #neuroscience #spring #findthesacred #cowparsnip #hiking #shinrinyoku #contemplativephotography (at San Rafael, California)

𝘎𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘢, or yarrow plume mouth, lights on a cow parsnip. I think it may be laying eggs, I couldn't find (quickly/easily) information on it, but that's what it looks like. As she crests over the visual horizon of the flower-head, a 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘢 𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘢, or some such similar flower crab spider species, comes to the ready. Perhaps, because she was not at the ready already, the moth may have seen her raise her legs, and flew away, leaving a clearly disconsolate spider. One of the spiders sisters on a nearby cow parsnip shows how it is properly done, complete with some webbing, allowing second chances for near misses. One must always be prepared! #soldotnaalaska #soldotnacreekpark #sonydschx400v #SonyCameras #sonydsc #cowparsnips #yarrowplumemoth #gillmeriapallidactyla #crabspider #crabspiders #misumenavatia #dramainthepark (at Soldotna Creek Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjfIeWBrbC/?utm_medium=tumblr

Two bumblebees in SCP. 𝘉𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘶𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘴, the red-belted bumblebee (I think), is working over a cow parsnip. A 𝘉𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴, or, as Wikipedia says it is 'commonly known,' the indiscriminate cuckoo bumblebee, is working the 𝘌𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢, or seep monkeyflower, which Wikipedia says it's, as of 2012, one of the most studied flowers. I've never heard of either of these. Seen them, yes. Heard people speak of them in these terms, no. (I know this may not sound humble, I knew the Latin for bumble.) #cowparsnips #sonydschx400v #soldotnaalaska #soldotnacreekpark #sonydsc #SonyCameras #bombusrufocinctus #redbeltedbumblebee #bombusinsularis #erythrantheguttata #indiscriminatecuckoobumblebee #seepmonkeyflower # (at Soldotna Creek Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjbYR6Bybm/?utm_medium=tumblr
