This 1962 commemorative stamp highlighted the 100th anniversary of the Homestead Act, which accelerated the settlement of the west by granting adult heads of families 160 acres of surveyed public land for a small fee and a promise to reside on that land for at least 5 years. As you might expect, there was plenty of funny business and much of the land went to speculators and the railroads.

A good way to start. Issued the year that I probably started collecting as a kid. Stamp collecting was a hobby that was often passed down by family members. Not sure that happens anymore in the complex world we live in. How can it compete with the things kids have access to these days?
1972 Commemorative.
