thoughts on the syndra redesign that just dropped?? including old vs new splash arts!! :D

It's just a splash art refresh, so I wouldn't get too excited - Syndra's been well overdue for one of those for a while now.

It's fairly conservative as a redesign for that reason - mostly just it pulls back on the sexualization of Syndra (which her story has never supported anyway so that's a decent move), and... it gives her a face. Syndra's old splash has a very indistinct face that's mostly smudged out in the shadow of her helmet, but here we get a much more visible set of facial features which has the benefit of making her a lot more identifiable.

Much in the same way that Syndra's story doesn't really support sexualization, though, I would argue that it also doesn't really support immaculate makeup, perfect nails, high-end Dark Queen fashion and flawless smooth skin.

Syndra is a rage-driven, traumatized, magical explosion machine, who spent literal centuries sleeping imprisoned in a pool of magic water and upon awakening tore a mountain out of the ground and flew off to live alone on it, because she fundamentally does not want to be around people. She hates them, they are the source of her pain.

But she's designed to look like a cool, calculated, scheming Evil Sorceress who lives all day in a big opulent castle, sending servants into the world to do her dark bidding while reclining in a bed attended by captured slaves. There's a disconnect there - the design is trying to communicate a rather different character than how she's actually written.

Personally I'd like to see a Syndra who is wild and maybe a little bit feral, or hermit-like, an isolated lonely misanthrope who lashes out against others and uses her power to control and dominate her environment and others by sheer force and power rather than by any form of subtle manipulation or social intimidation. Less cool, calculated Maleficent evil queen self-control, more Carrie, more unstoppable force of nature.

There's this unexamined Default™ priority with female characters in League of Legends to make them look cool, beautiful and glamorous, regardless of whether that's what their story or concept actually invites, and I think it occludes a bunch of more interesting and unique design options. Syndra is an example of that.

Like, the best design Ahri's ever had was in the Ruined King game, where they leaned into her feral and animalistic nature, to better tell the story of how she's struggling between her desire to be human and her Vastayan instinct to feed and hunt

It didn't desexualize her or make her not beautiful in any way, but it did, at least, allow for something other than the immaculately composed not-a-hair-out-of-place silky smooth Default™ beauty that dominates her League of Legends incarnation to be a part of her visual storytelling, and I think she was a lot better for it.

I wouldn't mind if Syndra got that treatment as well.

unfortunately tartaglia plays all the champs I dislike. mainly: mid lane assassins. kills squishy champions in the blink of an eye. he's a zed and akali main, with the occasional talon that can get flexed to jungle when he's filled. ew. stinky.

he's scary good at this game. high elo for sure, at least grandmaster every season but if he grinds he'll hit challenger.

and then there's me. platinum support player with my girly enchanters and mages >u<

I refuse to let him rank with me on my main because I won't let him carry me hmph I will earn my rank myself!! he always teases me and tries to let me rank with him on main but he actually is proud of me for climbing on my own hehe

we have alt accounts that we duo on. I either drag him to bot lane and he'll play samira, kai'sa, or aphelios while I support him, or he'll jungle while I play seraphine, syndra, or lux in mid lane

games are so fun with him c: we have very good synergy and get so silly sometimes, kill stealing each other without getting upset. or we'll flash in base before game starts >.<

he never responds to toxic chat messages when he's playing solo (because he's locked in and would rather just skill diff the trash talker)

but when anyone says a bad thing about me? he gets so mad. types the most creative insults yet somehow escapes from being banned. if it's an enemy, that enemy is going 0/20 and all 20 deaths are from me or tartaglia. he'll also keep checking in with me to make sure I'm okay and that what they're saying isn't getting to me <3

he's also so good about coaching me when he notices there are some things that I can do differently to play better hehe.

I'm a sucker for redemption arcs, if halion reconciled with the fall of Azul. Would Meg be civil if his brother humbled himself, imagine if bakers family like their cousin were friendly and helped his horse 🐎?

Oft - that would be a site to see! If Azul was finally defeated and Megivus's family was freed from having to serve him, it would be an awkward reunion.

Baker MC would have to push Megivus a little bit to get him to even see his family - they eventually settle on having dinner together. Queen Syndra is over the moon to see her son again, King Faelyn is still recovering from loosing all his power due to Azul's demise, and his brother Halion is displeased to see him again.

At first it's pleasant - catching up on each others lives, chatting about the future. Halion can't help but make a jab at Megivus for tarnishing their families name. Megivus snaps back at this brother for not being the prince he should have been and that he would have done so much better.

The scene gets tense real quick - You know that scene in Shrek 2 where they are all at the dinner table? That is how tense it is - more harsh words are spoken and both leave dinner early to retreat into their bedrooms.

Baker MC tries to convince Megivus that rekindling with his family but he's not having any of it. He goes to storm off down by the stables - the last place anyone would look for him. There he sees his brother tending to the horses.

"You're out late, isn't it past your bedtime?" Megivus snickered. Halion snapped his head back before replying mockingly.

"Thank you for your concern, dear brother - but shouldn't you be more concerned about getting your beauty sleep? I swear I can see your wrinkles from here"

....

"You little fucking shi-"

The conversation continues like this before they finally settle down, lying in the hay stack. Megivus finally opens up to Halion, about how hard it's been without his wealth and tile. How he didn't know how to do anything when he left the castle, everything was given to him hand a foot and now - it was like his whole world crumbled before him.

He felt useless, that without his families kingdom - he was nothing. Megivus was jealous of Halion for being everything he wasn't - smart, reliable, everything their father wanted him to be - everything he couldn't be.

Despite open wounds Megivus was sharing, Halion couldn't help but scream at him. His royal facade finally cracked as he explained exactly how it's been since Megivus has been gone. The extra work, sleepless nights, meetings, diplomacies, the stress of their fathers judgement.

Halion lost so much of his youth trying to look after the kingdom- he doesn't even know how to be a kid anymore. What's even worse is that he didn't have any support, their mother was too busy spying on Megivus to take care of him and their father? Self explanatory.

Megivus got to have freedom, Halion got to loose a good chunk of his childhood. Megivus was shocked, he spent all this time resenting his brother that he didn't realize the situation he put him in after being banished.

Silence filled the barn, so thick it was almost suffocating.

"You know-" Halion trailed off "These horses remind me of you"

Megivus took a quick glance at the long nosed horses, feeling a little offended at such a suggestion.

"Let me guess? Because I have a long face?" Megivus eye roll could be heard from the castle.

"No-" Halion paused, reluctant to continue "Because they have beautiful hair, like yours"

Megivus could only blink, surpsied at his brothers complement

"Come again?"

"When I was younger, I always wanted to play and braid your hair - but you were always too busy partying and hanging out with the older princes, I just-" Halion's throat became hoarse, figeting with the cuffs of his sleeve.

"I just really wanted to spend time with you, since I couldn't get your attention I turned to the horses" Halion looks up to one of his stallions, smiling "I would always pretend I was braiding your hair instead of theirs's for a moment - it felt like we were spending time with each other..."

The realization of his brothers loneness and admiration for him hit's Megvius like a speeding truck. To think he spent years at parties and balls, completely disregarding his brother. Megivus rubs his hair between his fingers before turning to his brother.

"Well- better late then never" he gestures to his hair - Halion's eyes lighting up as he gently takes Megivus's hair into his hands. They spent the rest of the night just catching up, before finally falling asleep.

Baker MC wakes up worried when Megivus was not in bed with them this morning, he never leaves them alone for this long. Rushing around the castle they finally stumble across Megivus and his brother sleeping peacefully in the hay stack. Megivus's hair was slicked back in a beautiful fishtail braid.

Baker MC smiles, it's a start but they finally had a chance to talk to each other.

Too bad they probably caught a cold being out here all night...

I'm also very excited for the next SG lore drop, but at the same time, quite afraid of the story not moving forwards, or the motivations-morals of X characters being forgotten :S (Or the casting being unnecessarily expanded) Personally I expect that Syndra fools everyone, for good of course. Star Guardians are under the service of the First Star and its treason is unknown except for the first team, so naturally, they'd stand for the FS at first (e.g. Lux's team). Those who have seen/experienced the truth however (aka the remaining members of Zoe's team, Xayah's and Ahri's team) would be on the side of bringing down the First Star. The thing is that Syndra is playing both sides (being a Star Guardian while weilding the power of entropy from the Dark Star), and she keeps the true context and scale of things mostly to herself. When she sets her plans in motion, I think everyone would be like "girl wtf", until she reveals literally everything. It's a secretism that I think it's needed in this case. The Dark Star expects Syndra to "open the door" for it, which I wouldn't be surprised to see that she does when the time is needed lol, but she is a smart girl and knows what she's doing, so to me at least, and considering her goals, at the moment of truth she'd backstab both the Dark Star and the First Star. (maybe summoning the DS, summons the FS too??? who knows) Because at the end of the day, it's not only the FS' contract which must be destroyed to free the Guardians, but the cycle between both stars as well. But alas, these are my expectations and where I personally think the story will go. Only god knows what truly awaits us :')

Let's see.... While I'm not exactly a massive supporter, I believe that Syndra/Karma has some incredible potential for opposites turned lovers dynamics. Syndra's whole deal is incredible negative power fuelled by a life of being treated like dirt, so she stays away from everyone in her floating tower.

Karma is a spiritual warrior, imbued with Ionia's spirit who seems to be primarily an embodiment of harmony. There's a tension there, just imaging the fight scenes would be amazing.

But I feel there's potential here, what if they meditated together, worked together, bonded, Syndra learning that maybe there's this one person is worth her attention.

There's a chance it could end ugly, but even Karma taking a chance on her better nature would be more than Syndra has had so far.

It's 12:52 am on October 13th, 2023.

I'm in bed preparing to go to sleep next to my mom. I broke my ankle a month ago, 3 weeks into starting my own business. I'm feeling good today. My boyfriend quit his job? Lost his job? I think more quit suddenly today, but I'm honestly feeling okay about it. Hoping that he's able to find what he needs to get out of life and praying this pushes some motivation into him!! Love him, he's been very supportive of everything going on lately and I'm appreciative of that. Learning the hard way not to rely on him for everything. My thoughts are jumbled but I'm sure I'll know what I mean. I've been feeling the urge to write again so I figured now is as good a time as any. My dad said an interesting thing today- "As long as you're a giver, the takers will find you." It wasn't in reference to me, and in fact was a reference to many other relationships in our family dynamic. Its hard being back home and seeing first hand how much everyone in their life takes advantage of them. I refuse to let that be me. Im going to find success and help them one day somehow, even though it will pale in comparison to the support they've provided for me through all of the hardships I've experienced.

Anyways, all of that's in the past now. Idk if I'll ever return, but if I do I'm going to try to keep track of the things that happen each day that bring me joy and make me happy, just like I used to do when I had the idea a while ago when I was paying someone to therapist myself lol.

1. Good day at work, easy, quiet, quick appointments. Have made okay money so far this month!

2. Dylan coming over to watch survivor. I love that the longer we're together the more ways I figure out how to make him laugh, the best feeling.

3. Star Guardian Syndra became available in the hextech shop and I snatched that shit up immediately.

4. Had fun going to 5 below and making some silly purchases (Kermit tee for me, herbilogy tee for Dyl, phone charm that is too small but also too bulky to use for work lol)

5. Upgrading to the 15 as soon as it arrives in the mail, ended up being only $5, told my parents I'd pay but they're not into that.

6. Rewatched jujutsu kaisen 0 with my dad, he got invested and was asking me questions and wanted to know what was going on, especially when I then watched the newly released episode he was totally lost. I like having good moments with just him.

7. Ate Indian food for the first time in weeks. Aloo curry. Fucking delicious.

8. Dylan putting my cardigan on me and smoking a bowl out of a pipe with me on the porch and having a good conversation even though he was stressed beyond belief. We're good for each other. I love him

Syndra has been in a tough spot the last few patches. She has barely seen much play, hasn't gotten over the 50% win rate mark either and each patch her name was left off of the buff list. Fans were outraged, until they found out she would be getting a mid-scope update.
