Thoughts on S3 of The Bear
Ok finally fucking.finished watching, my thoughts are under the cut and hold on to ya butts because there's a lot
Let's start with pros:
There are some QUALITY jokes in this one. The whole John Cena bit cracked me up, he is truly embodying the Fak lifestyle in his scenes
Entirety of Tina's episode, you can tell this was made by people who love this character. Who love what she represents in the show and what she means for people who are in her shoes. I still do not like Jon Bernthal though but that is a me thing.
Sugar explaining to Donna that her always wanting to make her happy is a fucked up way of life. The exact opposite of what a parent child relationship should be, god help me that HIT.
Long live playing in the background of Richie talking to Frank which is a nice continuation of last season.
Sydney's best meal ever being made by Carmy.
Still love that they intercut people talking about how much they love their craft with the price that it extracts.
Now let's get to the cons (and get ready cos there are a lot of em) :
I do not understand the point of this season. I don't know how impacted they were by the WGA strike or if this is just genuinely bad writing but it felt like half of a season, not a complete arc. Nearly all of it felt like filler and I'm not sure why they would do that in an 8 episode season. None of the characters, including and especially Sydney, Carmy, Richie or even Sugar. Like what are we doing here. This feels like the first half of a season.
Marcus. What did they do to my boy. We see the funeral, we hear his speech and we see the violet and then we get nothing. What the ever loving fuck are we supposed to take from this.
The Faks. Why THE FUCK do they get so much screen time. They are great as comedic relief but by god it feels like they got more lines than Syd. Why are they inserted into Donna and Sugar's narrative. What purpose is it serving. Marcus or Sydney - people who have lost their mothers could've worked, hell Richie could've worked because he's a parent. WHY THE FAKS.
Some of the pontificating about food and cooking in the last episode really really felt like I was back in a creative writing seminar and had to listen to dudes go on about how art changes lives. Not saying that it was bad, I just think the writing could've been tighter there.
Why does the Richie Carmy thing NEVER GET RESOLVED. It hangs on from episode 1 to the fucking END!!
Now we get to my biggest problem: CLAIRE. WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE TRYING TO DO WITH HER. WHAT ARE WE SAYING. IF SHE WAS SO IMPORTANT WHY DIDN'T SHE GET MORE TIME TO DEVELOP LAST SEASON. WHY ARE WE SUDDENLY SUPPOSED TO BELIEVE THAT SHE'S THE CALM IN CARMY'S LIFE.
Listen, I'm not coming to this as a Sydcarmy shipper, for me the show could leave that and I wouldn't be hurt but I don't fucking understand the point of Claire. If you want to show the similarities between Carmy and his dick ex boss and how much of his life he's losing out on, there's a million ways to do so. Some of which the show is already doing. Like him using the way he speaks or him undercutting Syd and calling things "his dishes" and him losing his connection with his family (not going to Mikey's funeral, not being there for Sugar while she gave birth)
What, pray tell, is the point of Claire then. What is she supposed to represent apart from this male character must have a saintly woman he scorns for becoming the tortured genius. It's lazy. It takes up so much time. And it is just not written well.
#I'm not delving into the race of it all because my thoughts on that are not totally formed#also no offense but why did we not get a better sydney arc#im not asking them to resolve everything#i did like the partnership/ another opportunity arc she had that didn't end or her becoming more panicked and anxious#i also like that she told him that she wasn't his babysitter because that man was not acting grown#all in all they seemed to have hit the s3 slump that killed ted lasso#but for a show i waited for and like so much i am very disappointed#the bear#the bear season 3#sydney adamu#carmy berzatto#richie jerimovich

Why PA System Hire in Sydney is Essential for Your Next Event
When planning an event in Sydney, whether it's a corporate conference, a wedding, or a live music performance, having the right sound system is essential. PA system hire Sydney offers an ideal solution for event organizers who need high-quality sound equipment without the need to purchase and maintain expensive gear. Let’s explore why hiring a PA system in Sydney is a smart choice for your next event.
1. High-Quality Sound for Every Occasion
A PA system is the backbone of any event where sound amplification is crucial. Whether you're hosting a seminar, a wedding, a concert, or a public gathering, PA system hire Sydney ensures that everyone in the audience can hear clearly, no matter the size of the venue. With professional-grade speakers, microphones, and mixers, you can be sure that the sound quality will be crisp, clear, and powerful, creating the right atmosphere for your event.
2. Professional Setup and Support
When you opt for PA system hire in Sydney, you get more than just the equipment. You also gain access to expert technicians who will handle the setup and operation of the system. This ensures that the sound equipment is optimized for your venue, allowing for proper placement of speakers and microphones to achieve the best sound coverage. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about technical difficulties—experts will be there to troubleshoot and ensure everything runs smoothly.
3. Flexibility for Different Event Sizes
One of the biggest advantages of PA system hire Sydney is the flexibility it provides. Whether you're organizing a small intimate event or a large-scale conference, PA system hire services offer a range of packages suited to different event sizes. From small portable systems for conferences and meetings to larger setups for outdoor festivals and concerts, you can find the perfect sound solution tailored to your specific needs.
4. Cost-Effective Solution
Hiring a PA system is a cost-effective option compared to purchasing your own sound equipment, especially if you only need the system for one event. Buying professional-grade PA equipment can be a significant investment, and you would also need to consider storage, maintenance, and transportation costs. With PA system hire Sydney, you avoid these costs and only pay for what you need when you need it. Plus, rental services often include maintenance, ensuring that the equipment is in perfect working condition.
5. Easy to Use and Customizable
PA systems for hire come with user-friendly controls that make them easy to operate, even for those without technical expertise. In addition, the systems are customizable, allowing you to adjust the sound to suit your event. Whether you need extra bass for a music performance or clear voice amplification for a speech, PA system hire Sydney allows you to make quick adjustments to suit the acoustics of the venue and the specific requirements of your event.
6. Wide Range of Equipment Options
PA system hire services in Sydney offer a wide range of equipment options to suit your event needs. Whether you need microphones, mixers, speakers, or even stage monitors, rental companies provide a comprehensive selection of gear. You can rent additional items such as lighting and audio-visual equipment to complete your event setup, ensuring that everything works seamlessly together.
7. Convenient Delivery and Pickup
Another benefit of PA system hire Sydney is the convenience of delivery and pickup services. The rental company will deliver the equipment to your event location at the scheduled time and pick it up afterward, saving you the hassle of transporting and setting up the gear yourself. This service also ensures that you have the equipment well before your event begins and allows you to return it afterward, making the process completely stress-free.
Conclusion
Whether you are hosting a corporate event, a live concert, or a public speech in Sydney, PA system hire Sydney offers a practical, cost-effective, and high-quality solution for all your sound needs. With professional-grade equipment, expert support, and flexible rental options, hiring a PA system ensures your event is a success, delivering clear and powerful sound that will engage and captivate your audience.

i like looking at you !!!!
i’m trying so hard to come back to my prompts. u know the drill!! sending syd a kiss bc she sent this first and also sending one to lizzie @jockpercabeth bc of her beautiful scrunchy fic <333 mwah.
.
superfruit.
sometimes the new york city summer heat sneaks up to you. annabeth can almost compare it to sitting by a pool side and realizing that sweat has clung to your skin, even if fresh, cool water is right there. and the sky in the upper east side is right there, a beautiful swimming-pool blue, and she just wants to dive in it—because her neck is already sticky and warm.
“just five minutes outside and i am already swea-ting,” she tells percy, who’s carrying a bag full of groceries that he’d insisted on carrying because, i'm a gentleman, annabeth, that’s what we do.
right now he only grunts. “believe me, i know.”
she does know. the white shirt he has on is plastered across his chest and shoulders, and although in any other circumstance she would appreciate the view all she feels now is pity. percy’s face contorts into a grimace as he brushes away the dark hair sticking to his forehead.
“maybe we should get ice cream?” she suggests.
“babe, the ice cream shop is two blocks farther than the apartment. but...maybe after, i guess?”
“i just...i need something refreshing, please, or else i'm gonna die and it’s gonna be your fault.”
“there’s a fridge back home,” he says, grinning at her expression.
“a fridge, he says. that only has, like, orange juice.”
“yeah, ‘cause you ate all the ice cream.”
she shoves him. “excuse me, that was you—”
“but you gave me the idea of eating it, so.”
“you’re literally so immature,” she says, and he laughs as she continues with, “fine, if you want it that way. orange juice it is.”
fine, she thinks. if the summer heat sneaks up to me, i’ll just do what’s necessary. so she pulls her braids into a ponytail using her favorite blue scrunchie and immediately feels so much better. she glances over her shoulder at her favorite person.
“race you?”
she’s already running when percy calls at her that, “hey, it’s not fair!” and chases after her anyway.
;
percy’s apartment is blissfully cool. home. he takes out the orange juice as he promised. she grabs some pop rocks from the grocery bag. and there’s something about it—something she’s too afraid to name.
domesticity, perhaps?
sally’s away at a writing seminar, and it’s just them and the air conditioning and a glass cup that feels deliciously cool against her palm and his hiphop playlist blaring from his phone. it’s been a year, almost. a year after his sixteenth birthday. it suddenly hits her that he’s here, lending his home to her. after a year, almost. she’s still sixteen, maybe, but she’s come far from that girl scared out of her mind for her best friend, only a summer ago.
“cheers,” he says. her glass of orange juice clinks with his own; half his lips quirk up.
“cheers,” she replies.
but all annabeth wants is to kiss him, she realizes. instead she takes a sip of juice and shoves some pop rocks into her mouth after. the burst of sweetness is glorious against her tongue, though not as glorious as watching him.
thirsty much? she wants to tease, but is too enraptured.
he drinks and drinks, draining away the orange juice, gasping every once in a while as his adam’s apple bobs along. when he’s done, he grins at her.
“you’re staring.”
she shrugs. almost a year. it really doesn’t feel all that long, it really doesn’t embarrass her anymore. he’s her best friend. her favorite person. and it shouldn’t be surprising she’s fallen—hard—for that eagerness in him that he shows just now, as he chugs down the cold drink. she’s fallen for his smiles, the little crow’s feet that form after. the hair that curls behind his ears and the way he’s taller than her and, yeah, okay, he’s just very pleasing to look at. sue her. but she’s also fallen for his small mannerisms—the sound he makes after understanding a math problem. those arms that pull her in when she’s too far away. it shouldn’t be surprising, but it is. like new york city heat that sneaks up to you.
“earth to annabeth?” he waves a hand across her face.
immediately she catches his hand in hers, nose wrinkling. “why’d you have to do that?”
“do what?” his eyes sparkle as his smile widens. their fingers intertwine, and a familiar warmth flares in her tummy.
“that. distract me. can’t you just let me be? i was admiring you.”
“admiring me, huh?”
he tugs her closer. she rolls her eyes. “yes, admiring you, dummy. for your information, i like looking at you.”
“really?”
“mm-hmm.”
whoever doesn’t like looking at percy jackson is a liar fair and square, and that’s the truth. their eyes meet; she curls her arms around his neck, not even complaining that he’s still sweaty. she’s sweaty too, after all. there’s a song that’s playing from his phone, but she’s too caught up to identify which one exactly.
percy cups her cheek, breathes into her ear, “well, i like looking at you.”
“i think i like looking at you more.”
“oh, so it’s a competition now?”
there it is. the warmth in her tummy. this much smiling must be unhealthy. it must, because it hurts too much.
“shut up,” she says, and stands on her tippy toes to kiss him. he tastes like orange juice, obviously— all sweet and tangy. it must be some kind of super fruit, this need for having him, here. this feeling that makes her gasp into his mouth and fill her heart up, up until it nearly spills. she can’t get enough of. she can’t. home. she sighs and drags him even closer because he’s home and he’s a super fruit and that’s all she needs.
#sydney tag#I finished a prompt!!!! i mean it's just one but still#hope u liked it bestie<333#look mom i can write#percabeth#percabeth fic

are you interested in anyone other than maks?
Sure. All interesting people interest me. And even the less-interesting ones interest me, ‘cause those are the ones with the most potential to be real freaks— like that guy in Syd and I’s Contemporary Art seminar, who hardly ever said more than four words per sentence, but then it turned out he ate oranges whole, with the peel on? And had Meryl Streep’s entire IMDB memorized. Like, chronological order. Anyway. Point is, I’m insatiably curious about people, in all kinds of ways, and it can’t be helped. Highly doubt that’ll ever change.

Karen J. Hicks, according to her website, was raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm. In her own words, she “began her storytelling career spinning fantasies for her dog and creating plots while she mowed the huge country lawn.” She has written books, films, and ghostwritten. Karen, took the time to answer a few questions I had for her.
1. When did you discover you needed to be an author?
I’ve always liked thinking up poems and stories, but in high school our AP English class was required to write a novella one semester and the teacher frequently read and posted from mine. She encouraged me to write even after I graduated. I kept writing over the years as a single parent, but more for fun than money. I didn’t get serious about writing as a career until my son graduated from high school and joined the military.
2. What inspired you to publish your first book?
I was fortunate to take a hiatus from working and live for several months in a cabin in the North Georgia mountains. It was there I finished my first book, THE TAO OF AN UNCLUTTERED LIFE, a short self-help book about being organized body, mind, and spirit. I submitted it to a publisher in Atlanta and they just happened to need another TAO title in their next catalog so I didn’t have to wait forever for the book to be released.
3. Did you have any fears of publishing before you started?
Other than worrying it would never happen, no. haha
4. What were three things your learned about the publishing process?
a. You can get published without an agent. I’ve done it twice before I switched to self-publishing.
b. Self-publishing is easy, but you do need some good editors to help you.
c. Cover design and catchy titles are important.
5. What was the most surprising thing your learned in the process?
Don’t expect your friends and relatives to buy your books.
6. Have you done any unique marketing that other authors can borrow?
I confess I’ve not been that good at marketing. I’ve done some shows, some readings, podcasts. Have a Facebook author page, Amazon author page, as well as postings on sites like Goodreads. I send group emails to my high school graduating class to announce my books. I’ve spent some money on Facebook advertising, with a little return. I hired a publicist for one book, and found it to be a waste of money.
7. What is the title of your latest book?
I have three books I am promoting right now. The first is a book of short stories called THE TWELFTH OF NEVER: AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
But, during the pandemic, I also completed two of the three books in my romance series: AMETHYST DREAMS and JADED DREAMS. The first book in the series was CRYSTAL DREAMS.
8. What is a brief summary/synopsis of the book?
THE TWELFTH OF NEVER is a collection of 15 stories that range from mysteries to lost loves to domestic challenges and humor. Many utilize O-Henry-style irony and surprise endings, as well as a sprinkling of fantasy to jolt the senses.
The three books in the Dream Series follow the love story of Brynn and Canaan, who meet in Nashville in CRYSTAL DREAMS, go on a honeymoon road trip to Hollywood in AMETHYST DREAMS, and struggle to keep romance alive through the daily grind and dashed dreams.
9. What inspired/encouraged you to research the information gained in your latest book?
Since the short story book is all from my imagination, little research was necessary. For the Dream Series, however, I researched Native American culture, as well as plotting a believable road trip from Tennessee to Hollywood. My time working in Hollywood gave me good insight for JADED DREAMS. Using shaman rituals and herbal healings in the series also required research.
10. What advice would you give an aspiring writer?
It’s simple: Believe in yourself and don’t give up. Passion for your subject matter is required for a successful book.
11. What inspired you to become a screenwriter?
After my son graduated, I had my own business and was hired to type a screenplay for a client. I had to figure out the formatting so got Syd Fields’ book on the subject and used it like a Bible. I also very smartly bought a script-formatting program.
Then I attended a seminar in Nashville given by Emmy and Golden Globe winner Marsha Posner Williams, producer on THE GOLDEN GIRLS. She talked above moving to Los Angeles even though she had to live in her car for a while. The next day I started planning my own migration west.
I wrote several scripts with others and for others over the years, that made me a few bucks although none made it to the screen. The closest was one on which I was a writer-for-hire on a script that sold to Nickelodeon
12. What did you find was different from writing books verses screenplays?
Screenplays are all about the visual, and you can’t go in the same depth of story you can in a book. In truth, two of my books were first written as screenplays: THE COMING WOMAN and CRYSTAL DREAMS.
13. You have also been a ghost-writer? How did you get into this field?
I went to work for author/comedian Steve Allen as his manuscript assistant, which originally meant typing up his dictated stories and notes and coordinating with the agent and publishers on his books. When Steve got backed up on a deadline to finish his books about the Bible, I ghost-wrote a few sections for him. Then I started going through his dozens of ring-binders of typed thoughts and ideas he had dictated over the years. Culling and organizing these became his book title REFLECTIONS. I also took a children’s poem he had written and formatted it as a book with illustrations: THE BUG AND THE SLUG IN THE RUG.
Around this same time, a friend was hired to write a California travel guide for the Automobile Association of Great Britain and was having problems completing it so I wrote several sections of that for him.
14. What advice would you give someone thinking about ghost-writing?
You can’t have an ego, because you get no credit. You have to do it for the love of the project. Then it can be great fun. If you’re lucky, there’s money to be made as well.
15. Where can your future fans follow you on social media?
My FB author page: https://www.facebook.com/Karen-J-Hicks-109539650865598/
My Amazon author page: https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/entity/author/B00NG6KWJ4?_encoding=UTF8&node=2656022011&offset=0&pageSize=12&searchAlias=stripbooks&sort=author-sidecar-rank&page=1&langFilter=default#formatSelectorHeader
16. Do you have a website?
Yes. http://www.karenjhicks.com/
17. If you could co-author a book with any author, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Shel Silverstein as his books are brilliant and creative, with powerful messages underlying the simple stories!

A Pentad Analysis of One Day at a Time: Women Deserve Respect
https://www.netflix.com/watch/80990870?trackId=14170286&tctx=3%2C0%2Cffbd808e-fd2d-4a91-a541-152d702ad906-278619994%2C79296a98-ed1c-48ea-9ede-85ba8896ed53_11245726X3XX1550287596630%2C79296a98-ed1c-48ea-9ede-85ba8896ed53_ROOT
Introduction
Elena Alvarez and the entire family’s thoughts on women’s rights and being respected is spot on. Women tend to be disrespected by their preferred gender, preferred pronouns, beliefs, they way they are dressed, the way they talk, etc... Women have the right to express their emotions and thoughts and to be able to act on it without being disrespected and judged.
Description of Artifact and Context
A Spanish family starts to talk about Instagram that is mainly for friends which I called “Finsta.” An Instagram account that is made that is not to be shared with family. In this case there are a group of people involved in this scenario. Elena, Alex, Penelope, and Lydia who are a Spanish family living in California. Elena’s girlfriend, Syd, accidentally drops the bomb on Penelope, Elena and Alex’s mother, that Alex who is a 16 year old teenager has a “Finsta.” Penelope leaves her home to go to work rattled that Alex has a “Finsta.” She is rattled and disturbed by the fact that Alex is hiding things from her. Penelope shows up to work worried and disturbed and explains the situation to her male co-workers. One of her male co-workers Scott accidentally says that he is friends with Alex on “Finsta” because they are co-workers and bros meaning they are bro-workers. Penelope then takes Scott’s phone to stalk Alex and to check his “Finsta.” While looking through Alex’s “Finsta” Scott and the other male co-worker mentions that they took a sexual harassment seminar which requires them to be sensitive towards others (men, female, etc...) and to be respectful of others and that it goes both ways. While they were all talking at work Scott gets an alert on his cellphone about Alex’s new post on “Finsta” which is Alex posting about how “he has hoes in different area codes.” Then another post where he is touching a statue’s boobs in a museum then another where he is touching his girlfriend, Chloe’s boobs. Penelope goes home and vents to Elena, Syd, Lydia and Schneider about how work was and then drops the bomb that Alex, her son, is a pervert. Penelope then shows them Alex’s post and how disappointed they are of him. Schneider, their neighbor, makes a joke that Alex is a... about to say something funny but stops himself and instead says, “that kid is a filthy monster.” Elena, Alex’s sister, then says with disappointment “I can’t believe my brother has no respect for women.” Alex walks in the door and mentions that he had a wonderful time at the museum exposing himself to art. Penelope then says that she saw his “Finsta.” Alex shocked says, “what?! and that Scott told him bro-workers before hoes.” He then explains that it isn't a big deal and that everyone has “Finstas.” Penelope argues “does everyone post pictures of themselves running around like a goose honking everything in sight?” Alex all confused says, “what?” Penelope yells, “honking boobs!” Alex argues and says, “that it is just dumb stuff that makes his his friends laugh and gets him 300+ likes.” Penelope says that it isn't cute and especially how he is treating his girlfriend Chloe. Everyone then chimes in and says he was raised better than that. Ludia, his grandmother, then says that it is her fault because she is the reason he got a date with Chloe. Chloe initially said no but Lydia explained to Alex to never take no for an answer and that every no is a yes in disguise. Elena then chimes in and says “oh my god Abuelita, you are an enabler of toxic masculanity. Adding that society has encouraged men to define their maleness as being aggressive, unemotional, sex-obsessed.” Lydia responds to Elena and says, “you’re just describing a man.” Penelope chimes in and says. “maybe in your day, but time has changed and that men need to be careful about how they talk to women or else they get in trouble.” Elena then exaggerates and says, “Oh poor men. Now I can’t yell from a passing car that I think a woman has nice tatas.” Lydia dramatically says, “I know it is a shame. In my day when I walked down the street, I would hear a symphony of compliments.” Elena replies and says to her grandma that she was being harassed. Lydia all excited says, “Oh yes! Much more than all the other women.” Penelope chimes in and says that maybe she was comfortable with that type of attention but not everyone is. Lydia then says, “Women are crazy because women liked to be wooed.” Schneider chimes in and says, “Alex, here’s the thing. Women are beautiful. The curve of their neck, the way the they move, everything.” Schneider then continues to say, “Which is why I am an ally; no means no and yes means yes.” Elena expresses that it is not a yes or a no; the yes needs to be an enthusiastic yes. Schneider then stops and thinks about all the times he has been with women and how he has never gotten an enthusiastic yes. Elena and her girlfriend, Syd, then demonstrates how a woman or a female shows or says an enthusiastic yes. Schneider then feels that he's in a funk; he leaves the apartment to make some calls and to check whether he has ever gotten an enthusiastic yes or not. Alex then confusingly says that he is all flustered and confused. Penelope expresses that she too is confused, that she hates to admit it but she feels sorry for men because this whole consent thing is tricky. Elena yells, “NO!” And adds that women are always blames themselves and that the man never has to take responsibility. Elena makes an example: where a school during prevention week all the signs are aimed at women. “Girls, don't dress provocatively. Girls, don't walk alone.” She then adds, “Hey guys, don't rape!” Alex angrily says, “Oh my god, why are we even talking about this?” He then explains himself that he only took a couple of pictures as a joke and that Chloe thought it was funny. Elena screams at Alex, “Did she? Or did she feel like she had to laugh because she didn't know what else to do with your hands on her boobs?” Their mom then says to Elena that she needs to take it easy. Elena then yells and says, “No, Alex thinks what he did is cute.” She then points to Alex and says, “You are basically a predator.” Alex fires back at Elena and says, “You are basically a psycho.” Elena raised her voice and says, “Good call me crazy for depending a woman’s right not to be groped.” They continue to argue back and forth while Alex says, “Elena, you are just mad because the internet told you to be. You don't know my life, you don't even leave this apartment!” Elena finally felt the need to say, “Because of guys like you!” Alex responds all confused, “What are you talking about?” Elena opens up and tells everyone that a couple of weeks ago her and Syd were coming home from the movies, while on the bus holding hands a couple of guys were staring at them. Finally they got out of the bus and the guys followed them saying, “Come on you guys, kiss. We really want to see you both kiss.” Both Elena and Syd it was terrifying and scary while the guys thought it was funny. They ran into a crowd and lost the guys and finally ran home all scared. Since then they haven't left the house or been anywhere. Alex all emotional says, “Elena, I am so sorry that sucks.” He didn't know and that he wanted to kill those guys who disrespected them. Elena tells everyone how upset she was because she didn't stand up to those guys and that she wished she had. Penelope then goes on about a similar story that happened to her too but that she didn't know whether she should have said anything or kept it to herself. Finally, she had but she didn't receive the help she needed and deserved. Long story short she finally said to Elena and Syd that the future is bright because of strong, amazing women like them who don't take any crap. Alex finally understands the whole point where women need to be respected and that he doesn't ever want to make women, Elena or anyone feel the way they did.
The Pentad Method
The Pentad is a method introduced by Kenneth Burke in the 1950s. It is a method used to analyze a dramatic scene from a movie, a story or a conversation. The Pentad is broken down to five elements which re the following:
1. Scene is the setting or background for action;
2. Act is the action completed in the story;
3. Agent is the protagonist or actor in the story;
4. Agency are things that help the agent achieve the act; and
5. Purpose is the agent’s higher cause.
Analysis
In my analysis I found that the five keys points are very strong. In this particular scenario scene is where Elena and Syd were harassed by random men asking them to kiss in front of them. They were on the bus being all romantic and coming home from the movies after a good day spending time together as a couple. Being followed by these random men, harassed, and being forced to kiss in front of them as a joke. The second key point is act where Elena pin points facts and tells a story about the time her and Syd were harassed while coming home from the movies. The act is where Elena and Syd both explain to everyone especially Alex how terrifying it was and how scared they were which caused them not to leave the house for weeks at a time. The third key point is agent which in this case Elena, Penelope, Lydia, Syd and Schneider are all agents. However, Elena dominate the part of being and agent by all the fact and stories she provided during the dramatic scene. This scenario made so that there is a group trying to convince Alex of how important it is for women to be respected and just how much they matter. The fourth key point is agency where everyone’s actions led to the whole scenario to escalate very quickly. In this scenario agency is the dominant key point due to Elena, Penelope, Lydia, Syd and Schneider’s reactions and facts/stories. For example, part of the scene where Penelope yells at Alex that not everyone is out here posting pictures of themselves honking women's boobs. Also, the fact that Elena mentions that during their school prevention week all signs were aimed at women to not dress provocatively, or walk alone. As well as Elena mentioning well how about men don't rape! Lydia mentioning how much she loved the attention, symphony of compliments or that women love to be wooed leaving both Schneider and Alex all confused. Most of the stories/facts brought up by the agents helped achieve the act, which in this case is called agency. Lastly, purpose is where Elena, Penelope, Lydia, Syd and Schneider finally gets Alex to realize that it is important it is to always respect women. In this scenario Elena was the main agent who drove the story and made Alex realize how important it is for women to feel respected.
Motivation Statement - Conclusion
Elena and the rest of the group were motivated to get Alex to understand that it not okay to disrespect women. Women matter and they deserve to be treated with respect and be respected all scenarios included. Women have rights and they should never be disrespected based on their gender, preferred pronouns, the way they are dressed, the way they talk, etc... Women have the right to express their emotions and thoughts and not be judged or disrespected by it.

Corporate Team-Building Training
The purpose of a company's corporate team-building training program is to create an environment in which employees feel empowered and participate in improving their skills and strengths. Thus, a well-planned training program provides both employee development and workplace creativity. Whether you are a small to medium sized business or a large enterprise, you should have an effective training program in place to increase your business' productivity and develop new employees' skills.
The first step to corporate team-building training is the selection of an appropriate training method. There are many methods available today, and training programs can be customized to meet your specific goals. Here are some training options:
Leadership-Based Learning - The system is developed within an organizational unit or department to develop, teach, and evaluate employees' leadership styles. These methods help foster teamwork by providing classroom instruction in the areas of goal setting, decision making, and conflict resolution. In the first two years of teaching leadership skills, employees receive a series of structured instruction in coaching and mentoring, as well as live coaching in an interactive environment.
Performance Based Learning - This method encourages students to apply their knowledge of work ethics and leadership skills to their work environment. Students study the human resources issues faced by companies and then write about their experiences. They learn to analyze their own behaviors and habits, and then apply these skills in real life situations.
Expressive and Experiential Learning - An experienced leader guides their student through an interactive course that allows students to experience their learning through play, training, and practical exercises. Instructors plan activities using both hands-on and written techniques. Students learn to examine, understand, and create solutions to problems.
Online Training - Businesses can easily provide their employees with hands-on and online corporateteam-building training. Corporations can choose between attending onsite training and the web-based version. There are certain advantages to each, depending on the nature of the work that employees do. Both methods offer advantages, but for different reasons.
Attendance-based training - The students work as part of a team to accomplish the company's mission. The benefits of this method include the ability to communicate effectively and in a manner that is most suitable for the workplace. By working together, workers become more flexible, which helps them to adapt to the needs of the workplace and make the most of their individual talents.
Online - Employees can easily access materials to train on their own time, at their own pace. However, this is not the case when the employee participates in a structured training event. Moreover, the curriculum is divided into modules so that employees can progress individually, rather than learning as a group.
In order to make sure that your employees are being taught what they need to know, it is important to make sure that your employees are the ones leading the trainees. Also, the task of motivating and reinforcing the trainees is up to the leaders. Good organization, with clear instructions, is also very important.
So, how do you implement a training program for your employees? If you are a new corporation, the time-honored method is to engage your employees in the training through some type of voluntary activity like a fund raising drive, a club or a non-profit organization.
Also, if you are a larger corporation, your corporate team-building training program can be delivered through some type of online webinar. You can link your team-building program with other related business issues to provide a business opportunity for all employees. Furthermore, your employees can network with other team members via the webinar, which will encourage more productivity and engagement.
The bottom line is that you must decide how you want to implement your corporate team-building training program. Find out what works best for your organization by considering your employee population, training needs, and goals, and of course, your budget.

This is a story about whiteness. Set against the backdrop of a Caribbean island featuring idyllic beaches, palm tree-dotted, rolling hills, and endemic poverty resulting from centuries of slavery and colonization, this story centers around the whiteness of its protagonist (mine). Occasional glimpses into the lived realities of some minor characters are offered by its author, but, by and large, it does not deviate from its first person limited point of view. The object of this vignette is neither to entertain nor inform. Its chief purpose lies in the preservation of an event in the memory of its author.
We begin our tale with a young woman firmly in the grips of adulthood, yet still grasping at straws when it comes to the Big Questions of Life: Who am I? Why am I here? Will I ever grow into a C cup or am I destined to a life filled with preposterously unsupportive bralettes, with no real need for underwire in sight? Despite these haunting queries floating around in the maelstrom of her mind, plaguing her every waking hour, the young woman has survived 1 heartbreak, 2 broken bones, 3 months backpacking around Latin America, 24 consecutive years of life, and countless rejection letters from literary journals. It should also be mentioned that this young woman is queer, cis, and white.
This young woman is, of course, me.
I had just gotten back from my year in Chile, followed by some solo wandering around Ecuador and Colombia, when I applied for a summer abroad program leader position in the Dominican Republic. The title of the program was “Service and Leadership,” so I was initially wary of the ways in which the concept of “service” would be handled. As it turns out, my fears were unfounded. I was pleasantly surprised to find that concepts like the white savior complex were actually addressed in the curriculum provided us. During the program, my wonderful co-leader and I led daily reflections on developing intercultural skills and tried to broaden students’ definitions of “service” to include mutually-beneficial, reciprocal relationships with community members. The students’ final project was to incorporate what they learned from the Dominican NGO and to implement solutions to problems that their local communities face back home. That is, students were prompted to realize that members of the community are the ones best equipped to address the issues they face. It is not the place of outsiders to swoop in and “civilize,” “educate,” or otherwise alter a community so that it mirrors their own.
It is also worth noting that the students did, in fact, acknowledge and integrate these ideas, ultimately coming up with thoughtful final presentations that delved into those very issues.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s set the stage: A tropical island, bachata music lingers in the air, intermingles between palm fronds lazily swaying in the breeze… as mosquitoes penetrate your flesh through shorts, underwear, socks, shoes, leeching off your lifeblood like the One Percent.
Enter fifteen kids – modern teens of the Snapchat era, oblivious to the musical stylings of MC Hammer, Destiny’s Child and (fortunately) Nickelback – conceived, incubated, and brought to life on Facebook timelines and Instagram filters. [In the distance, the angry voice of a retiree on a golf course in Florida shaking his fist at the sky, “These youngster ingrates will never know what Reagan did for this nation!”]
But I digress.
Of these fifteen kids who signed up for a summer service program abroad, two are Asian-American and two are Black. The other eleven are white. The Language and Culture program, which runs concurrently, consists of roughly 80% young women of color. “It’s that white savior thing,” comments one of their program leaders on why my kids are predominantly white.
The first week of orientation goes well. We visit a cacao plantation, learn about the NGO we’ll be working with, and check out one too many colonial fortresses for my taste. The kids are cool, I love my co-leader (shout out to Chrissy for being a strong, independent woman and overall #goals), and I’m enjoying the seminar we are teaching, which even includes activities on privilege and respecting cultural differences. One student expresses some concerns about homesickness, but then she does a 180 and it’s all good.
Then, about a week and a half in, some shit goes down. This socially-awkward girl from California – we’ll call her Emily – starts saying stuff like, “Rappers and all those people do drugs and encourage violence. The only two genres of music I can’t stand are jazz and hip-hop.” At which point, I let her know where all the music she listens to comes from.
Emily starts to get buddy-buddy with one of the students of color, all the while spewing comments like the above and some even more colorful ones like, “How come your hair looks like that? Are those braids real? Where did you get them?” The person on the receiving end of this dumbassery is a super chill, gender-nonconforming individual who draws and listens to music all the time, and is clearly adept at handling such wildly invasive comments. Imagine the coolness factor of Willow and Jaden Smith combined, but with fewer alien conspiracy theories and even better fashion sense.
Now, at this point, I decide to sit this awesome human down – let’s call them Syd – and remind them that it’s never their responsibility to educate ignorant white folks and that Black safety and comfort come before white feelings. Naturally, it’s awkward coming from a white person, especially from a white person in a position of perceived authority, but I’m working with what I got here. I offer to fill out an incident report regarding the comments, but Syd declines.
My co-leader and I then have a talk with Emily about her remarks, to no avail. We even unpacked the knapsack of white privilege together, for @#$!’s sake! [Link below] But you can’t dismantle the white supremacist heteropatriarchy in half an hour. Or, at least, that’s a tall order and one that I couldn’t fulfill.
https://nationalseedproject.org/white-privilege-unpacking-the-invisible-knapsack
Even though I realized that going into it, it was difficult for me to accept that I couldn’t help much. That is, even on a highly-structured, supervised academic program with teachers and chaperones present, I couldn’t make this one kid feel safe. It would be doing a disservice to the historical record if I didn’t admit my white feelings were hurt that I couldn’t protect this student from the effects of systemic racism. The absurdity doesn’t escape me. But, on the other hand, I wasn’t feeling guilty for the privilege I enjoyed as a white person that Syd did not; I was mad. Specifically, I was mad that not only a young person of color, but a young queer person of color was the target of such ignorant remarks – especially during a trip focused on accepting differences. I have taken pride in my identity as a member of the LGBTQ community and I have found strength in standing with others in solidarity, but in this instance my actions were as good as useless. That feeling of impotence gutted me.
When I spoke to one of the Language and Culture program leaders about the situation, who happened to be a queer woman of color, she reminded me that, of course, Syd would encounter bigotry and ignorance the rest of their life and, in her opinion, they needed to learn how to handle those attitudes now as opposed to later. While I understood where she was coming from, I couldn’t help but feel that if I could make this kid feel safe, valid, and comfortable for just this summer – or this week, – just an hour, even – that that would be something.
And I couldn’t.
For Syd’s final presentation, I let them know they could present to just Chrissy and me, instead of the whole group, since the project required a very personal reflection. They opted to present to the whole class anyway, sharing a hand-drawn picture of a mirror with a single eye peeking through, representing the process of introspection and reflection they went through during the program. Syd proceeded to address everything I hoped my students would glean from this experience: that service is a process of exchange, that the white savior complex is deeply problematic and to be avoided at all costs, that introspection is key, and that human connection is at the crux of anything we can deem “service.” Furthermore, they called out the casually racist comments they received during the program in front of the entire group, including Emily. I couldn’t have been prouder.
The outcome of this experience was (hopefully) not the creation of a self-indulgent white guilt fixation. Instead, it’s led me to further educate myself and to (hopefully) become a better ally. It should also be noted that Syd is not to be treated as a mere plot device in this story, enlightening our white protagonist through their very presence. [Although they did teach me more than I ever could have taught them in a million years – about resilience, courage, and the importance of self-expression. And I am indebted to them for that.] Moreover, there is no redemption arc in this story – just a constant process of learning and unlearning.
There’s a lot to unpack here, but I would like to end this story on a positive note.
On our last day in the DR, I went around asking kids what their favorite activity was. One of the more reticent young men who initially refused to try anything outside his comfort zone leaned in and whispered to me, “Don’t tell anyone, but I really liked dancing.” This coming from the kid who sat out during the first twenty minutes of our dance lesson because “salsa is dumb.” This coming from the kid who was attached to his PlayStation console by an electronic umbilical cord only days before, disconnecting only to go to school and struggling to make friends. This same kid was suddenly having a blast getting weird on the dance floor.
So here’s to that kid for trying something new, for leaving me gobsmacked with joy at the sight of a gangly 15 year-old busting a move to some merengue music. Here’s to everyone else around the world stepping outside their comfort zones into the unknown.
*Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” only semi-ironically plays in the distance*
Fiercely,
