Chapters: 4/4 Fandom: Discworld - Terry Pratchett Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Havelock Vetinari/Samuel Vimes Characters: Havelock Vetinari, Samuel Vimes, Sybil Ramkin, Rufus Drumknott, John "Mossy" Lawn, Fred Colon, Nobby Nobbs Additional Tags: Canon Divergence - Men at Arms onwards, vetvimes, Whump, First Kiss, Alcohol Abuse/Alcoholism, Self-Destruction, Vetinari knows what he wants, Vimes...doesn't, Sybil deserves better frankly, just this once everybody lives, Rating for themes not smut, sorry about that, Angst, Happy (ish) ending, Violence, Some Attempts at Humour, Break Up, Jealous Vimes, Pre-Relationship, Drunken Mistakes, Blood and Injury, brief reference to suicide, I know canonically Mossy Lawn doesn't appear until later but I like him so he's here too
Summary:
Captain Sam Vimes is getting married...until he isn't.
Vetinari vaguely alludes to Having Feelings, and Vimes self destructs.
Spoilers for Men at Arms, although it diverges somewhere in the middle; this is essentially an exploration of what might happen if Vetinari realised he had feelings for Vimes in the run up to the wedding. There's angst, and Vimes whump, and miscommunication, and probably a million other tropes.
Thank you @weidenwinde for the plot bunny!

So I’m on the third season of downton abbey. I’ve scrolled through the tag. I’ve gotten a couple things spoiled. I assumed I would have seen any posts about major character death.
Sybil’s death took me COMPLETELY off guard what the FUCK. I was crying so hard it’s not even funny I fully could not see my screen at points.

Sybil: You kidnapped Brady Culture?! That's illegal!
Max: But Sybil, what's more illegal- kidnapping Brady Culture, or destroying our dreams?
Sybil: Kidnapping Brady Culture!
Flint: Sybil, listen, whatever I may think of you right now, my fuzzy little pals are counting on you to inspire them.
Sybil: To what, kidnap people???
Flint: To work together.
Sybil: To kidnap people?!
Sam: I think we can all agree a celebrity is not a people.

The Long-ass Thomas Barrow Post That Needs to Stop Living in My Brain
So, this next part turned out nearly 2,000 words long, so I'm going to have to cut it into smaller pieces.
Part 3A: The "Family"
Having thoroughly examined Thomas’ insistence on chopping every single branch he could sit upon, let's talk about the relationships he was never allowed to have - by the narrative itself.
The first being Lady Sybil.
It seems obvious they *should* have found a common ground while working in the hospital together; but, most of the time, they do little but stand in the same room talking to some other person without acknowledging each other at all. So, when Lady Sybil dies, and Thomas ends up crying, the first memory it brought up in me was him dismissing the death of her unborn brother.
********************************************************
Thomas’ affection for her daughter comes and goes just as suddenly, leaving little Sybbie a weapon in his pissing contest with the nanny, who just happens to actually be vile enough.
**********************************************************
Later, a “deep connection” with Master George similarly springs out like a mushroom, prompting a very legitimate question of whether the kid is just being used to gain favour. And, while, admittedly, more could hardly be expected from a preschool-aged actor, despite all the sweet fluffy fanfics it’s produced, in the “Here, have an orange” scene George behaves nothing like a child who's come to cheer up his favorite person, – and very much like a child whose mommy told him to be nice to that strange man.
***********************************************************
Since we’re going through the Crawleys, we should, of course, mentioned Lady Edith, whose life debt to Thomas is promptly forgotten, – not by the characters, but by the screenplay, since Thomas himself never brings it up, even when he could use the brownie points.
***********************************************************
Also, Lord Grantham’s medical condition doesn't bring on so much as a reference to Thomas’ supposed medical skills.
That last one is, admittedly, just my wishful thinking, and I'm generally prepared to accept that, realistically and by the inner logic of the story, Thomas probably wasn't meant to get particularly close to any members of the Earl's family.
That's just, what was, up to a point, meant to be the most significant relationship in Thomas' life, is written in exactly the same way..

Sorry to be posting twice in one day but now I wanna talk about Sybil's last line of dialogue at the end of Wallaru. Bro says "The Spiral will always need its Scion." In terms of new villains always arising, new worlds to explore, etc.
Now of course in the real world this means something totally different than in narrative; for us it means yay Wizard101 will continue and it's not ending and shit and thats good!!! But in universe, I believe that fact would have brought different feelings. Like sadness. Or anger. Or maybe just numbness.
Like if you think about it. The implications. The Wizard will never, CAN never rest. It's an ongoing, neverending thing of always being needed. It's You and ONLY You. There will never NOT be evil. If not GF Spider, then the Schism. If not the Schism, then the Old One. If not the Old One, then someone else. Someone or Something will always come up as a Threat that only the Scion (for some reason. Gods exists here) is expected and able to defeat. When Sybil said that I was legit terrified because gotdamn I can't retire???? I will Always be The Legend who Always saves the day???
Like even setting aside the social consequences of this (the whole people suspecting us/fearing us Thing) imagine what that does to your emotional and mental health. Fuck even physical health. Going through all that strenuous trauma and exercise and magical ordeals and shit???? The pressure of knowing it's the universe at stake, not just you or the world? I actually would have died just in arc 2 personally how the fuck are we supposed to carry this. For the REST. OF OUR LIVES. FOR HOWEVER LONG WE LIVE
✨ Anyways here's hoping the Schism Soldier is arc 5's new big baddie haha #enemiestolovers101 😘✌️💕💕💕

lil snippet;
“Pandora Rosier,” She says, shaking James’ free hand.
“Oh this is fun!” Sybil says, clapping her hands. “What a fun coincidence.”
“Wait- I'm sorry.” Regulus stops. “Rosier?” She nods. “Are you related to an Evan Rosier?” Regulus puts his hands together in front of his mouth. He is about to lose his fucking mind.

2, 11, 27 for syb and faith because the trolley problem scenario is killing me
2. What kind of dynamic do they have with each other?
lol. so. faith is the one seed that syb is legitimately afraid of. she reacts poorly to the bliss, losing her sense of self and humanity, and that terrifies her. she doesn't like losing control like that and faith is very good at stripping that from her. to the point where the angels don't even register syb as a threat most of the time -- they perceive her as one of them. and then there's the whole thing where faith literally buries syb alive beneath Joseph's Word in a very john kramer "don't you see? life is beautiful! you should appreciate it more!" kind of way. I think faith finds syb frustrating and is genuinely trying to help her understand joseph's vision, but they really just don't click. but. syb also spares faith after defeating her and she brings her back to the hope county jail to try to deprogram her. their relationship from there is tense, but they are both trying to bridge the gaps between them. faith --or rachel, now-- provides the resistance with what she knows of the brothers and how the cult is operating. and after syb succumbs to jacob and joins the cult, she leaves rachel all of her notes on the cult and her map, essentially passing her mantle as the leader of the resistance over to rachel because syb knows that out of everyone, rachel has the best shot of actually succeeding. they have a complicated relationship/dynamic and i really do love it a lot <3
11. Who is a better liar?
oh faith 100%. the only times syb can lie somewhat convincingly is when it's by omission. she would much rather just not say anything and attempt to change the subject or redirect focus (and even then she does that poorly). most of the time she doesn't see the point in trying to lie to someone. very much a "better to rip the band-aid off" kind of woman who prefers to speak and receive the truth, even if it's painful. if she were an rpg character charisma would be her dump stat meanwhile, i'm of the interpretation that faith learned how to lie and manipulate in order to survive. syb can never be sure when she's lying, when she's telling the truth, or when she's weaving the two together (as is most often the case).
27. How would they solve the trolley problem together?
adf;lkjasdf;lkajfsd i mean. faith would tie syb to the tracks so she can take the place of the single person and faith directs the trolley to run syb over, sparing the lives of the many with the sacrifice of the one <3
