Daily fish fact #457
Fish anatomy!
The swim bladder or gas bladder is an organ that helps many bony fish control their buoyancy! The swim bladder fills or is emptied of gas, which allows the fish to sink or rise in the water column without using any energy for swimming. Swim bladders can also be used for soundmaking or hearing purposes in some fish!
#someone in the tags of a previous fact said they didnt know what a swim bladder was before! so here is a fact about them.#its an interesting organ indeed! very cool in my opinion :)#fish#fishfact#fish facts#fishblr#biology#zoology#marine biology#swim bladder

Here we go! There's probably a few things you thought and a few you didn't know.
1.) Lateral Line
This is a sensory organ that fish have that help them feel movement and pressure changes.
2.) Swim Bladder
This organ helps fish maintain and control their buoyancy.
3.) Symplectitic
This is skull bone that connects other skull bones in fish.
4.) Operculum
These are bony shields over the gills.
5.) Otoliths
Special bones in the ear that look like tree rings.
6.) Acellular Bone
The top is a thin section of acellular fish bone and the bottom is mammalian cellular bone. Basically, acellular bone lacks osteocytes, or bone cells imbedded in bone matrix.
Did you get any of these?
Trivia Tuesday
Can you name a physical character that a fish has that other animals don't?

Open Thread [Halloween Event, Mermaid AU]
Kotaro was in potentially the most distressing situation a mermaid can be in, that which was immobilized somewhere easily accessible to humans. So, yes, maybe he was a bit of a moron for fucking around as much as he did right by a fishing dock. But fishermen usually brought radios with them and that meant he could listen to that, listen to the fishermen whistle (he couldn't figure out how to do that yet), and if he was lucky, steal a handful of delicious worms from their bucket. He was pretty sure he understood fishing nets well enough to not get caught in one and he was more than experienced enough getting his hand ripped open on fishing hooks to not go grabbing any.
Unfortunately, the tide coming in caused a grocery bag to end up over his head, which wouldn't really be a big deal if not for the fact some discarded fishing line wrapped its way around his neck, trapping him in his plastic prison. He wouldn't have cared too much if it weren't for the fact it was one of those laminated reuseable grocery bags that he couldn't rip through. So much for "eco-friendly." With his neck gills, mouth, and nose now unable to receive moving water, even when he was latched onto the side of a boat, he was in a life or death situation. Most likely death.
He's freaking out, clinging to the side of the dock and lifting himself out of the water to breathe with the gills on his ribs every so often. He hears a voice. A human humming on the dock above. He ducks under, trying to stay out of sight, praying they'll leave, but fuck, they don't, and he can't breathe because stupid no swim bladder. Unbeknownst to him, directly in the person's line of sight, he drags himself up on the edge of the doc to take another gulp of air.

Problem: Minion's stretchy arms could potentially make "Mario and... the Well" a non-issue since she could just grab Boopkins and pull him out.
Solution: Turns out there's a limit to how far her arms will go and the well is deep enough to exceed that.
Also we get this exchange after Meggy fills the well with water and he fails to float up due to being too full of rocks (because Minion apparently knows a concerning amount about Boopkin Fish Biology)-
Minion: You know, with how strong his species' stomach acid is he's going to finish digesting those rocks in a few hours, so this should actually work by then assuming he's okay with swimming in his own sh-
SMG4: OKAY, let's just try something else. *starts making the wanted poster*
#i wish squid memes were real au#the rapper bob arc#mario and... the well#smg4 minion#fishy boopkins#meggy spletzer#smg4#hc that boopkins eating rocks isn't just because he's a weirdo but because his species can actually digest rocks#and benefit from the various minerals inside#boopkins just eats too many for his swim bladder to compensate for because he's a growing boy and kind of a glutton#my version of minion apparently really likes marine biology

Lost my 4 year streak of dodging COVID and fish Karlach looks worse todayyyyy cmon fates, give me a fuckin BREAK
#kerytalk#I cannot tell if this is dropsy or swim bladder anymore#because it's entirely localised to her back half#all I know is the swim bladder is worse today#she's gone back in the isolation box + had a salt bath that took some of the swelling down#I have no clue what caused this aside from eating funny but I feel that should have gone by now#pls give her your best vibes to pull through I don't want to lose her#anyway not great to be dealing with when you're fucking SICK and also slightly terrified being sick will result in worse health long term#😢#probably won't according to my specialist but the fear is always there

Some fish are so weird. Look at this skeleton of a plaice:
The “empty spot” (+head) is where all the internal organs of the fish are situated. The rest of the body is all tail! They get things done with all their organs squeezed in that single spot!
#to be fair though many fish have organs squeezed pretty tight too#theyre efficient like that!#plus the plaice does not have to worry about such things as a swim bladder as it doesnt have to float
