+ Garden update~
+ This is a plum tree; after several flowers at the end of winter, he's finally decided to start growing some leaves; I let the clover grow in the pot because I have very little mulch and even less dried leaves to use as cover
+ Rosemary finally has some sun, looking good
+ Snapdragons finally dying off, but the pots contain chive seedlings and lots of cilantro (needs thinning)
+ Basil; this was store-bought at a sale price, but doing okay
+ Seed trays!
+ Shiso/ooba (Japanese perilla), big tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, blackberries (an experiment, nothing has sprouted), shishito (peppers), chervil, parsley, more cilantro, dill, broccoli, kale, lettuce, gooseberry (all sprouted!!), a few ice plants that I'm hoping will take off with warmer weather, snow peas...
+ The plants at the top of the image are all wildflowers from a packet of seeds from my mom
+ Bird netting around the blueberry bushes; the king and queen (Samson and Suksuk) are now accompanied by Starya and Sootakson; the netting is not well-done, it was a mid-workday emergency job since the birds started going for the flower blossoms...
+ Suksuk already blossomed and, I believe, got pollinated by something; at least, it's looking like it's supposed to... the petals turned purple and fell off, and the bottom bit looks like it should
+ Flowers outside Akina's window: lantana and saxifrage plus lavender; the plant is okra, I figured it would grow better with Akina watching over it; the lavender lacks flowers in the photo because I've harvested the first batch and am currently drying them (for making London Fog)
+ This is iyokan, a Japanese citrus; like any citrus, its flowers smell amazing...
+ A Japanese bell pepper, eggplant, and three corn... like, regular corn; The eggplant is not doing well, not sure what's wrong
+ Oh! The persimmon "tree" is still alive! He's been making leaves, which is incredible, because when I transplanted it, it had no healthy roots and was just a dead stick; trees are great
+ The side plot... radishes (about ready to harvest), beets, a small amount of spinach, carrots, and edamame (soy beans); the scraps on the right are there drying out to be used in compost
+ Snow peas from a seed pack from my mom
+ Edamame (soy beans) from our landlord... He asked how many I wanted, I told him 12, he told me to take 20, I told him I don't have room for 20, he told me to take 15, I took 15... But three of them have died so now I have 12
+ They are growing surprisingly fast...
+ I have started a more proper composting area
+ Finally, the strawberries! We have gotten six tiny little berries so far from a set of four plants; the berries were small but very sweet
+ But the bigger berries on the bigger plants are starting to come in and most of the other plants have lots of flowers...
+ This concludes your garden update

Seasonal Gardening in Dubai: A Guide to Planting Throughout the Year
Gardening in Dubai can be a rewarding experience, but it requires careful planning and timing to make the most of the region's unique climate. With its hot summers and mild winters, understanding what to plant and when can help create a thriving garden year-round. Here’s a quick guide to seasonal gardening in Dubai:
Winter (November to February) Winter in Dubai is the best time to plant most flowers and vegetables. The cooler temperatures allow for a wide variety of plants to thrive. Consider planting:
Flowers: Petunias, marigolds, geraniums, and snapdragons.
Vegetables: Lettuce, spinach, peas, and radishes.
Herbs: Mint, coriander, and thyme.
Spring (March to May) Spring sees rising temperatures, so it’s important to plant heat-tolerant plants. Focus on:
Flowers: Bougainvillea, gerberas, and lantana.
Vegetables: Tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.
Herbs: Basil, rosemary, and oregano.
Summer (June to September) Dubai’s scorching summer months make gardening challenging, but some plants can still thrive. Opt for heat-resistant options:
Flowers: Oleander, hibiscus, and plumeria.
Vegetables: Okra, eggplant, and sweet potatoes.
Herbs: Lemongrass and aloe vera.
Autumn (October to November) As the weather cools down, it’s time to prepare your garden for the upcoming winter. Plant:
Flowers: Pansies, primroses, and violas.
Vegetables: Carrots, beans, and beets.
Herbs: Parsley and sage.
With the right knowledge and care, gardening in Dubai can be a year-round activity. By planting according to the seasons, you can enjoy a beautiful, flourishing garden throughout the years.

Dear Deer!
By Cynthia Brian

Now that fall has arrived, foraging deer have become a nuisance in suburban gardens. The Columbian Blacktail was abundant during the 18th century in California. The population plummeted after the Goldrush due to over-hunting for venison and rawhide. The Department of Fish and Game speculates that between 1900-1910, fewer than 300,000 deer of all species roamed the state. In 1907, deer hunting was regulated resulting in deer residents soaring to over a million by the 1940s. The decline of the horned herbivores began when fire suppression increased, agricultural plots swelled, and wildlands became suburban developments. Yet, the dear deer acclimated to their new environment and today claim our gardens as their favorite restaurants.
As I’ve been busy with garden consultations this past month, the issue of deer damage continues to be a major concern. The hills are dry, edible resources have diminished, and the most inviting source of delectable treats grows in our private landscapes. Oh deer!
As a child, I remember going out into the orchards and vineyards on our farm at dusk every September evening to scare the herds as they could easily devour a year’s harvest. All the methods we tried didn’t work until we built fences surrounding the property.
I have always admired these beautiful, gentle creatures, and I enjoy watching the big bucks in the hills, sometimes sparring. In the spring when the mothers show their fawns where the newly sprouted green weeds are growing, I am doubly delighted. As much as I enjoy these wild, peaceful prowlers, like all gardeners, I don’t want them devouring my plants.
It is essential to be clear. There is NO DEER-PROOF plant. If the animal is hungry enough, he or she will eat anything. The only deer-proof garden is a fenced garden. In this article, I’ll share a few strategies for you to attempt. However, I reiterate, that the only foolproof method is to fence your yard. Since most people don’t fence their front gardens, I am including a list of plants that deer relish munching and a list of plants they prefer not to consume, although they’ll eat the new, tender shoots of most. Keep this handy list as a reference as you plan to plant.
What plants are deer attracted to?
Deer enjoy sweet, soft, delicate plants that won’t annoy their tongues or their sensitive palates.
If you want to offer deer a bountiful buffet, these are a few of the plants they gravitate to:
Agapanthus
Pansies
Daylilies
Hosta
Violas
Violets
Dahlia
Tulips
Sunflower
Crocus
Gerbera
Hydrangea
Rhododendron
Azalea
Hibiscus
Clematis
Hollyhock
Morning glory
Blackberries
English ivy
Grape vines
Kiwi
Peas
Greens (lettuce, spinach, chard)
Beans
Cabbage
Broccoli
Beets
Carrot tops
Corn
Deer-Resistant Species
In general, marauding stags and does stays away from strong-smelling, bitter-tasting, fuzzy, leathery, spiny, toxic, and fibrous foliage. They will eat these as a last resort because no flower or leaf is deer-proof. They innately know what plants are poisonous. If you want to deter deer from dining chez vous, try planting the selections below.
Natives:
Yarrow
Manzanita
Sage (salvias)
Pot marigolds
California poppies
Milkweed
Ferns
California Fuchsia
Deer Grass
Pink flowering currant

Deer Deterrents
Many people have experimented with deer deterrents. Other than allowing your dogs to roam the perimeter installing fencing around the area, or putting wire around every single plant, I have not found that any of these worked. Give any a try and let me know if you are successful.
1. Sprays that include rotten eggs, panther urine, garlic, and soap. If sprayed everywhere every few days, you might be in luck. Deer Away and Liquid Fence have been mentioned as effective when used according to directions.
2. Motion-activate sprinklers. They do work to scare the deer away, but I hate wasting a drop of water.
3. Whirly flags or spin wheels, but you’d need a dozen or more.
4. Shaved soap, usually Irish Spring. I think the herbivores loved the clean scent.
When the foraging pickings are slim, the deer adapt to whatever is available. In autumn, deer lack sustainable food resources. Our lush landscapes are extremely attractive to them. As you decide what to plant this season, select smartly and with the knowledge that no plant is deer-proof.
We are all part of this earth. Do your best to get along with our nature’s brothers and sisters.

Flowers for Bees!
Hey, all!
Spring is coming up sooner than we know, and its about time for people to start planning their gardens! With news about climate and the state of bee populations, I know a lot of people are wanting to make pollinator gardens to help bees in their area, but may not know what to do asides from ‘plant flowers.’
So I set out to look at a bunch of websites, and use those sources, alongside my own experience as a gardener, to recommend a nice list of plants to include for a bee-friendly garden!*
Amongst all the websites I looked at, these are the ones that popped up! Bolded plants are ones that appeared a lot during this research--across at least 3 different sites, but sometimes as often as across 7!
Asteraceae (a family of plants containing asters, ageratum, calendula, coneflowers, coreopsis, cornflowers, cosmos, daisies, dandelions, echinops, goldenrod, joe-pye weeds, liatris, rabbit brush, rudbeckia, sunflowers, thistles, yarrow, zinnias, etc.)
Bluebells
Borage
Butterfly Bush (sometimes referred to by its genus, Buddleia)
Caltrop
Chives
Clematis
Clovers
Cotoneaster
Creosote bush
Crocus
Currant
Elder
Fabaceae (a family of plants containing alfalfa, clover, lupine, peas, peanuts, wisteria, etc.)
Fennel
Flowering Gum
Foxglove
Grevillea
Hebe
Hellebores
Honeysuckle
Hostas
Huckleberry
Lamiaceae (a family of plants containing agastache, basil, bee balm (sometimes referred to as its genus, Monarda), coleus, hyssop, lavender, marjoram, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage (sometimes referred to a its genus, Salvia), thyme, etc.)
Lilac
Lilies
Marjoram
Mignonette
Nasturtium
Oregon Grape
Pansy
Penstemon
Peony
Phlox
Pincushion flower
Poppy
Primula
Pussy willow
Queen Anne’s Lace
Red Maple Tree
Rhododendron
Rose
Scorpion-weed
Sedum
Siberian Squill
Snapdragons
Snowberry
Snowdrop
Sweet William
Thrift/Sea Thrift/Sea Pink
Tulip Poplar Tree
Verbena
Wallflower
Wild Buckwheat
Witch Hazel
I, as a gardener in Florida, have personal experience growing plants for pollinator gardens, and have noticed bees frequenting sunflowers, lavender, Mexican heather, bee balm, coneflowers, lantana, marigolds, milkweed, and zinnias a lot. This isn’t necessarily to dunk on other plants on the list--a lot of them I’ve never even seen in person, let alone had a chance to grow in a garden! See which ones would thrive in your area and give them a shot!
Another post is in the works regarding general planting advice, since this post is getting a bit long. Afterwards, there’ll be another post about things you can do for bees that don’t simply include planting flowers!
I hope this list is helpful to you! By all means, feel free to hop into my inbox and ask for further advice, or seek out resources on the internet as well! Happy gardening!
Sources: x x x x x x x x x x
* Bee friendly, but I didn’t specify a particular species, so it may be a bit honeybee-leaning. If there’s enough interest, I’ll start making posts for native bees specifically.
EDIT: Hello friends! I just want to make a quick amendment to this post--I wrote it really quickly, about 2 years back, to procrastinate a homework assignment, and missed a few points I should have made in my rush. First things first, while this list contains a lot of popular bee plants, please make sure the plants you ultimately use in your garden are native to your area--at the very least nonnative, but native plants will be more helpful for bees in your area and be less finicky in their care! With that in mind, I used a lot of sources--some of the links are defunct now, unfortunately--from a lot of different places! Even though I'm Floridian and most of my experience revolves around gardening in Florida, when I make posts like these I try to consider that not everyone seeing it will be in Florida--or even the United States! One of the sources I used had an Australian domain name, and many of these plants have wide reaches of where they come from and where they can survive! With that in mind; if you see a plant on this list that is invasive in your area, it may be perfectly calm and native in someone else's area; whether it be my area, or in another country. Please don't take to the notes to yell at me for including it!
Addendum aside, I hope this post is helpful to you!

Tulip, Sweet pea (own up, for I suspect you are a hypocrite), Lantanas
Tulip: What would be the best present to get you?
A sketchbook, and some colored pencils.
Sweet Pea: How much sleep did you get last night?
okay so i know i am writing this today, but you sent this yesterday, and i am perfectly aware of what you are talking about, so this is what i did after the ‘aadya is a vampire’ thread
completed my chemistry assignment by 3 am(the reason i was up to begin with)
went to bed
woke up at 7:15 am
did classes
started studying chemistry at 1pm
dozed off on the table at 2pm
woke up at 3pm
continued doing whatever i was doing
so you could say, i slept for 4+1 hours
Lantanas: What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
remember the hair ask? and my English teacher of 6th grade who constantly bullied me for my hair? because it looked ‘untidy and filthy’?
yeah so in the teacher didnt teach my section anymore, but was the language teacher of other sections. so when the creative writing competition was announced, she immediately became the judge for 7th grade.
yeah so, I remember her running to our class, holding my paper up and screaming, ‘WHO IS AADYA SINGH?’
and i was sitting in the last bench, my hair still untidy and filthy, looking out of the window. and when the class pointed me out, i was like ‘welp. i am dead.’ because i thought she was going to taunt me in class 7th too.
but she complimented me that my essay was the best and i???? got the first prize????? and i was like???? lady, do you even know me?????
but still, it was the best compliment because of the situation and the person who gave it.

queens cup, creams and sky, lantana, and sweet pea for Zona $ul!!
[ Zona $ul ]
queen’s cup; what are you craving right now?
"Brigadeiro..." Bolt replied in a beat, the others nodded.
"You should make us some-" Wasabi suggested, followed by Bolt's whining.
"No fucking way- I'm too lazy for this." Dani placed a hand on his shoulder, "Do you want us to try and burn the house?"
"... Ugh, fiiine I'll do it." He whined again, they all smiled.
creams and sky; what’s the craziest/bravest thing you’ve done?
"I licked the toilet during a live!" Wasabi raised his hand proudly.
"I jumped the school wall and ran to the beach at 13 years old!" Bolt raised his hand, also proudly.
"I... I'm not brave, I painted my bedroom walls without telling my parents. The perks of being friends with the paint store guy." Dani played with his fingers shyly.
lantana; what’s on your mind right now?
"I fell for the black chicken prank last week and I wasn't able to take the images of my head since." Wasabi stares blankly as Bolt pats his shoulder.
"A lot of songs are playing in my mind right now, help" Dani smiled warmly.
"Por que bota a gente calça, mas calça a gente bota?" He stared blankly like Wasabi as both pat each other's shoulders.
sweet pea; who means the world to you? why?
"Oh no... Here comes the sappy shit." Bolt scoffs. "Besides these two?" He points at his brothers. "Or like, my close family... Min... Joon- oh God that's-" he laughs, "that's cliche and sappy and I'll vomit but I'd give the world to that boy if I could. AH OKAY ENOUGH!" He hides his face with his hands.
"My two little brothers!" He hugs them and they laugh. "I love them with all my heart!" Bolt mimicked a vomiting sound and laughed shortly after and Wasabi hugged the older brother.
"We... We got a puppy a year before we all went to Korean, and she's so cute! Her name is Cecília and she's a tiny pinscher. I'd die for her hah." He kept hugging Dani and rested his head on his shoulder. "Oh, these two too, yeah" They stare at each other for a few seconds before smiling.
