it’s actually insane the parallels btwn how some leftists talk about the revolution vs how mormons talk about the second coming — a mythical future but Soon! (and it’s been Soon for a long time) event that will take away all evils in the world and all the Bad People will die. i understand the appeal of this kind of thinking bc so many things in the world are awful but the fact is violent revolution doesn’t produce lasting change on the same level as more peaceful methods and even immensely disruptive but nonviolent direct action, and most of the casualties are the people these revolutions were supposed to help — the actual people in power always have had and always will have the means to flee. it’s just copium and it’s a deeply unproductive way of approaching leftism esp since exactly none of these people are taking any steps to actually make a revolution happen, or enact change that will actually last by other means

For me, the Neil Gaiman “parasocial relationships are the problem” response reminds me of growing up Catholic. The CSA was always presented as “there are problems in every institution”, which is true but misses the unique problem that the Catholic Church uniquely enabled CSA on a systemic level.

I was raised with a really similar line of rhetoric in Mormonism (though less specifically about CSA), and yeah, it's definitely familiar from the Catholic side of my family as well. They're a traditionally police/military/priest family so it can be applied to a wide variety of terrible institutions as well! It's like:

You aren't failed by the institution, it is failed by bad actors who may have harmed you, but failed themselves and the faith/organization/whatever most of all! And have you considered that your expectations of the most basic decency from other human beings is an unrealistic weight to put on these already overburdened people? Don't idealize authority figures, even religious ones allegedly chosen by God—they're just men, after all, and putting people on pedestals doesn't serve anyone. (Etc.)

And I'm just ... sorry, expecting a public figure to not have a secret "serial rapist" life is not putting anyone on a fucking pedestal! People idealizing priests or artists or whomever is not why they're shocked and horrified and scolding them for it achieves absolutely nothing.

I know this is old hat to just about everyone, but I'm more and more enjoying Imogen and Laudna as not just a mirror of the Briarwoods but also, and perhaps even more so, as a foil.

Laudna may be the death magic goth with a necromancer in her head, but out of the two of them, Imogen is the stronger mirror of Delilah. She’s the one with the undead lover, the one prepared to break the world by risking Delilah's return as long as it got her Laudna back, the one with the drive and the thirst for power and knowledge. Laudna meanwhile, while also tempted by power, is mostly just along for the ride, deeply devoted to Imogen over anything or anyone, alive only because Imogen found a way to resurrect her. They have looked each other in the eye, recognised the same seeds of darkness and the possibility of giving in, and said 'Together either way'.

But they are also in many ways a direct subversion of the Briarwoods. Delilah and Sylas both seemed perfectly happy to have made a pact with Vecna and revelled in the power he granted them, even knowing the disaster he would bring and the horrific acts he asked of them. Imogen and Laudna meanwhile, while tempted by power and openly voicing said temptation to each other, actively fight against it. Imogen was prepared to risk Delilah's return for the sake of Laudna's resurrection, but she would've fought her every step of the way. She's tempted by the power and knowledge of Ruidus, but also prepared to give all of it up if it means saving the world, because unlike Delilah she chooses to care about people other than herself and her lover. Laudna may be prepared to follow Imogen into hell itself, but she may also be what would lead her back out, because unlike Sylas she doesn’t just recognise darkness in her lover, she wants to fight it alongside her.

This is what I mean when I say these two hold the potential for great darkness. They wouldn’t function as a mirror and a foil of the most romantically iconic critical role villain duo if they didn't. But holding the potential for darkness and corruption also means holding the potential to resist and fight said darkness at every turn. It gives them the potential to choose kindness and struggle while still keeping a little bit of that darkness in their hearts, because without it, they never would have found each other.

Okay there’s something I’ve been seeing in a lot of pro Jedi spaces and it’s really starting to bug me: Buddhism is not some mystical perfect completely pacifist religion because it’s a minority religion in your country. Buddhists are just as capable of extremism, fundamentalism, political corruption, religious violence, and other abuses of institutional power as any other religion and to say otherwise is Orientalist bullshit.
