Started reading Light of the Jedi, and it’s been really good so far—the pacing is good despite the POV shifts, the characters are distinct, and the worldbuilding is very good, especially for an established setting. It feels like someone could read this as a stand-alone sci fi novel with no background with Star Wars and get along just fine.
But one of the things I like the most so far is this kind of general ‘people are inherently good’ philosophy that the whole book kinda has.
Idk how to explain it exactly, but all of the characters feel very realistic and human, and they all try to help others. The captain in the first chapter likes and cares for her passengers, and even knowing she’s going to die, she does everything to save them. The scan techs are scared and have lives and people they want to see again, but they put out the warning first, even though they might’ve survived if they hadn’t. The elected official guy stays behind with to coordinate the evacuation and tries to get everyone else out first. And, duh, the Jedi are Jedi.
It’s just really refreshing for a Star Wars project to have that faith, since most of Star Wars is set in some of the worst times possible: civil war and descent into fascism, life under fascism, rebellion against fascism, civil war, post-war and post-fascism reconstruction, the resurgence of fascism. Those are times where it’s hard to trust anyone, let alone have a hopeful outlook on humanity. For most of Star Wars, the elected officials are corrupt and power-hungry, the normal people feel like it’s everyone out for themselves, and the Jedi aren’t allowed to just be Jedi.
It’s also pretty good worldbuilding; like Yoda said in Clone Wars, the prequel Jedi couldn’t take the right path, they had to take the only available path. But in this time, the Republic is working, people are helping each other, the Jedi are allowed to be Jedi. The Jedi have the ability to take the right path, to stay behind on Hetzal and stop the explosion—in the prequels, Palpatine and the Senate wouldn’t have let them stay behind, and even if they did, they might not have been able to move the Tibanna, because the Dark Side would’ve been clouding everything and making it harder to use the Force.
That the Jedi are able to help and that other people are willing to help really helps emphasize that this is a completely different time period and landscape than most of Star Wars. It really sells the idea that this was the galaxy’s golden age.
Idk I’m rambling, but I really like Light of the Jedi so far, and if it stays good I might get into the rest of the High Republic

Because the stupid acolyte witches have brought it back to the forefront with their nonsense, I need to remind everyone
DARTH PLAGUEIS DID NOT CREATE ANAKIN
People who either never read or haven't read the Darth Plagueis book in a long time always seem to forget that Plagueis' experiments FAILED
He tried-TRIED to create life through the Force, it didn't work, badly, it didn't work so badly that it managed to piss off the Force which in turn retaliated by creating Anakin, Plagueis' attempt at creating life was so unnatural, such a perversion, so offensive that the Force created a life form for the purpose of destroying the sith

Anakin was crying when he told Padme that he genocided the Tuskens. He told her he hated them but he also hated himself.
Star wars is a tragedy because every time you watch it, you think maybe in the back of your mind " it could have been otherwise".Anakin was brilliant and had the potential to be a great person but ended up being one of the worst ones. And he knew it too deep down in his heart but suppressed it as Darth Vader.
Yoda said once you go down the dark path, it will forever dominate your destiny. Anakin believed that there was no coming back. Of course, both omitted the power of love, a power both predictable and unpredictable at the same time.

Ghost Anakin
Can we please take a moment and appreciate that Legends and Disney-Canon's Force Ghost Anakin confronted member of his family (Cade Skywalker) and/or friend (Ahsoka) when they were in trouble and he decided to show up to them as a Jedi to pass the warning/advice
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but when they weren't willing to listen, he changed into Vader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to trash them as the Sith Lord
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know why he is like that but I bow respectfully to his ghost’s communication skills.

the concept of "grey Jedi" doesn't work because the force is light and dark, not black and white. By definition, colour value might be a spectrum, but darkness is absence of light. Everyone is grey! Star wars has clearly implied that nobody is perfect and everyone comes in shades of of grey, everyone is flawed and imperfect. The jedi are all technically grey! Everyone has the dark and potential to fall within them. However, they are "light" because they, as jedi, choose light, choose selflessness, choose goodness. "Light" is a choice.
Textbook fandom interpretation of "grey jedi" is either A. Someone who uses both the dark and light side or B. Someone who is light and does good but doesn't follow the jedi order.
A. doesn't work, because the dark side isn't just defined by "being emotional" or "Thinking of yourself", it's literally stuff like murder and torture. You can't claim to be "good" or "light" or "better than everyone" while also condoning murder at the same time.
B. You don't have to be a jedi to use the force! You don't have to be a jedi to be in the light! Like it's not illegal, the jedi order respects non-jedi force users as long as they don't commit human rights violations! the Jedi are the majority of force users, but they're not the only ones who can use the force. The jedi themselves are aware that there are many different interpretations, and the only intervene when it. yknow. involves murder and torture and the like. calling non-jedi lightside users as "grey jedi" doesn't really make sense because they're... just technically normal jedi. And if they're not associating with the order, then they're just lightside force users that are not jedi? Why would they call themselves jedi if they themselves don't think they are jedi or associate with the jedi???
Like in Ahsoka's situation, she's not a "grey" jedi, she's a light force user that doesn't follow the jedi order. In fact, saying that she's a "grey" jedi is basically just saying that she's a regular jedi? That doesn't make her better or worse or special, disagreeing with the council doesnt make someone better or worse that the other- what does matter is her actual actions. Which, as aforementioned, is lightside. The jedi order is also light. They can coexist, yknow, one is not superior than the other, they're both light. And it's not uncommon for people to disagree with the council. That's the entire point of the jedi having a "council"- to provide different perepectives and healthy debate and come up with the best decision for everyone. You can't please everybody, that's entirely normal. There's a reason why the council discusses instead of having one person make all the choices. The jedi are people too, they're also flawed. You can be grey and choose light, that's what the jedi choose to do.
tldr everyone is already grey, but light and dark is a matter or choice.
addedum Mace windu is a great example of a character who is light, where his use of vaapad requires mastery of control of both light side and dark side, and therefore he often skirts the dark side as well, he consciously makes an effort to choose "light" and master himself.

i should know better than to allow myself to feel hope and yet the acolyte trailer's inclusion of so much jedi content, the training of the younglings at the beginning, all shaded in peaceful, golden light, and the group of knights and masters all igniting their sabers together, it makes my heart feel warm. i know the show will doubtless center the the dark side and use the jedi as the background context to be rebelled against, but regardless, the fact that we are going to get to see the temple closer to the height of the republic and the jedi as a flourishing culture makes me genuinely excited
