the lightsaber being a symbol of a jedi's life. stellan giving his lightsaber to forfive knowing he wasn't going to make it off starlight. giving it to forfive to give to elzar. stellan sacrificing his literal life for elzar. and then giving elzar his metaphorical life too. and elzar is carrying that around. literally holding stellan's life in his hands (but stellan is already gone)

Stellan had landed the moment he saw Elzar’s Vector go down, a wave of anguish erupting from the cockpit. Now Stellan was racing toward the burning craft, his heart hammering until he realized that Ty Yorrick was pulling a figure from the wreckage, a figure that wasn’t moving.

“Elzar!”

Ty looked up at Stellan’s shout.

“He’s alive,” she said as he dropped to his knees beside them. “Just.” 

Stellan pressed his hand against Elzar’s chest. He couldn’t feel a heartbeat.

Stellan pulled back a fist, slamming it down above Elzar’s heart, over and over.

“Come on,” he yelled at his oldest friend. “You’re not finished yet. Do you hear me? You’re not finished.”

Elzar convulsed, coughing painfully.

Stellan sank back on his legs. “Thank the Force. Elzar? Can you hear me? Elzar!”

“Shouting at him won’t help,” Ty said.

“She’s right,” Elzar wheezed. “It won’t.”

Stellan wanted to pull Elzar close to him, but had no idea the full extent of his injuries.

“I thought I’d lost you.”

Elzar’s eyes flickered open, and he reached up and grabbed Stellan’s arm, leaving a bloody mark on his sleeve.

“I thought it was over, Stel. I thought it was finished, but it’s not. They’re coming, Stellan. They’re coming, and we can’t stop them.”

Elzar’s body shook as he was racked by another coughing fit.

“He’s inhaled a lot of smoke. I’m surprised he’s still with us.”

“He’s stubborn. Aren’t you, Elzar? Hey.”

Elzar slumped in Ty’s arms, his eyes rolling up into their sockets. Stellan reached for his neck. There was pulse, weak but there all the same. He would pull through. Stellan would make sure of that.

“Master Gios. Come in please.”

Indeera’s voice made him start. He pulled his hand away from Elzar, activating his comlink.

“Stellan here. What is it, Indeera?”

“You...you need to see for yourself.”

anyway how do you think elzar felt when he turned a year older than stellan? because i think it probably felt a lot like dying.

listening to music on my commute. hears a line about laughter. thinks about stellan. then thinks about elzar thinking about stellan's laugh. you know how it is

on top of this, forfive didn't even spend THAT long with stellan. elzar gave him forfive once stellan was made marshal of starlight iirc. so forfive was with stellan for only a month? maybe 6-8 weeks if we pad that time out a bit. but in that short amount of time, it was enough for forfive to pick up on the fact that stellan loved elzar, and would do anything to protect him.

just remembered that the first face stellan pictured in his last moments was elzar's...........

elzar being offered a seat on the council and him feeling like he would be taking stellan’s seat, taking stellan’s place, and he’s not worthy of that seat or of stellan’s legacy. he condemns himself for what happened on starlight and thinks stellan would condemn him too (even though that couldn't be farther from the truth)
