Hello! I've been thinking about binding some danmei novels in my native language, but I don't know where to start. I found your blog recently and find it very inspiring! I was wondering if maybe you could share with me what tools and materials would be good to get started with?

Sure!!!! So, I'm on mobile and don't have links at hand, but if you go back through my bookbinding tag, there are other replies I've got about the materials for making a book specifically. The renegade publishing blog also has resource documents that walk through the bookbinding process and include links to educational materials, etc. So for here, I'll focus on the danmei side of things!

So, a fun feature about these books is that they tend to run LONG. I've seen a number of people try to take up bookbinding in google docs, and honestly, it's doing things on hard mode. For many danmei, it's basically impossible. I think my EARLIEST earliest attempt at svsss began in gdocs, and that's not a super long novel, but gdocs was choking on it. A word processor on your desktop is going to be your best bet. Personally, i invested in a microsoft office license, because it was familiar and i could afford it. But the free parallel to that will be libre office, which does basically everything word can do, with just minor differences.

On the fancy end of bookbinding software, affinity, indesign, and microsoft publisher are also names you may hear tossed around. These can do fancier, more artistic layouts, but also come with a heavier price tag. And because i had webnovels on my radar from the start, i wanted something ROBUST. I wanted to be able to dump all of the husky and his white cat shizun into a single file and work from it. And i did eventually do that! Being able to typeset a single file rather than repeat each step across several is great, especially since i tend to tweak design choices as i go.

For danmei, you're also going to want a robust printer. I have a color laser that's been an absolute beast of a machine, but a black and white laser can get you a long ways, and monochrome designs can be very elegant. You don't want an HP brand printer, their toner subscription practices are downright predatory, but Brother and Canon are names I've seen recommended highly. You probably don't want an inkjet printer, because long books take a LOT of ink. The one exception would be if you can find an affordable ink tank printer.

And the last major thing i can think of is that if your main computer is a laptop, consider typesetting with an external mouse and keyboard! Danmei novels are split into lots of short chapters, frequently split across just as many web pages, with lots of footnotes to format, and laptops are convenient but not ergonomic. Doing too much on there is just asking for a repetitive strain injury. I've done it, but often paid for my sins in pain! And your laptop keyboard may start complaining too, I'm almost certain my first typeset of mdzs was the nail in the coffin for my last laptop's keyboard, haha

Ive found binding cnovels to be EXTREMELY rewarding, even though my original reason was because these things would NEVER be licensed in english 😂 I'm delighted to see people experimenting with it for other translations in other languages, I really hope it goes well for you!!!!

Last song I listened to: I rarely know what music I feel like and just hit shuffle and hope for the best. The last song I can remember consciously choosing recently was Element of Crime - Wann kommt der Wind, which is prime "gazing pensively out the window in the rain" material (cf:this poll), and also great for spontaenously solo-waltzing in the kitchen when I meant to be cooking (ADHD-who?).

Currently watching: I usually have one c-drama on the go at any time, and currently it's The Wind Blows from Longxi - a gritty spy drama, because before that it was New Life Begins and I like alternating pastel-coloured romance type dramas with the more serious stuff and this one was on my list because it uses a set from A League of Nobleman that I was hoping to catch more glimpses of. Also: Leverage Redemption (though currently paused, because I only have two episodes left 😥 and I want to make it last), Ronja the Robber's Daughter, Ted Lasso rewatch, Ragnarok.

Currently obsessed with: Still anything MXTX, so mainly MDZS with a side of SVSSS and a sprinkle of TGCF. Also the layout of Siwencao in Wind Blows from Longxi, because it is apparently my fate to be tricked into watching a show for a specific set and getting distracted by a new set from that show instead (also happened with Osmanthus Lane from A Dream of Splendor which I watched for the SAME SET FROM League of Nobleman! *sigh*

Also, I was really impressed by your layout coding--the world needs more academic papers written in Twine! I'd love to know which story format you used, and whether there any resources online for those cool features like the footnote boxes and the do not pass go table of contents.

the footnote boxes are just a styled modal--here's a youtube video that explains them.

the process he shows mostly works, except you'll need to do "{(link-repeat:"&times")[(hide: ?modal)[] ]}" instead of "{(link-repeat:"&times")[(replace: ?modal)[] ]}" if you want it to work in the most recent version of twine

the table of contents is much lower tech than you'd imagine. it's literally four separate pages, each time adding a new link manually

Might as well dump a bunch of updates here in one go that will also answer your question:

work is currently killing me and my interest in even fanfiction. I got no bandwidth to have fun pondering timelines, meta, and all that fun fandom stuff. Instead, I'm reading the novel equivalent of junk food - aka Chinese webnovels. (Not the MDZS kind, to be clear, but the simply straight forward cliche ones haha.)

closed down invites to the discord server since a couple friends slash authors who I "share" the server with have been receiving anon death threats (with all the usual racist threats, SA threats, and the like) on AO3.

This tumblr layout update (on desktop) is really not doing it for me. I see the new layout and I immediately exit the tab. There's a reason why I don't use twitter at all 😂 But one day, I WILL run out of queued posts and I've have to garner the energy to download that extension that will fix tumblr back to its old format... one day. But not today.

TLDR: I see your asks, replies, and reblogs. But I'm kind of dying from the new tumblr layout, work killing me, and general disinterest in the complexities of SVSSS/MDZS fandom right now.

Respectfully pushing back on this a little bit because for as much as Shen Yuan can be called an "unreliable narrator" in his lacking EQ, it's certainly not in his PIDW quoting considering he demonstrates hyperspecific knowledge of minute plot points, much to even Airplane's surprise; he either binge read or reread the entirety of PIDW 20 days before his death, as discussed in @/svsss-fanon-exposed 's post here , so his memory of it would be very sharp. Considering he would remember the full layout of the holy mausoleum towards the end of the story, a whole 10 years into transmigration, I think it's safe to say he's the most reliable source on PIDW canon (just not his own relationships canon). The majority of things that he's wrong about are things that he just changed and didn't realize he changed bc he thinks no one care shen yuan qingqiu

Though Airplane mentions writing a few stories yet only hitting it big when he publishes PIDW, we don't get too many details on what/where he was writing-- it's possible that he didn't publish his other works, that he was going under different pseudonyms, that he published PIDW on a different platform, etc etc. Ig it's just a bit weird to me to ask "why didn't sy ask airplane if he published anything else?" because as PC he and Airplane never interacted at all; Airplane only remembers him because he was going down the rabbit hole of PC's profile for the first time literally minutes before he died. PIDW was INCREDIBLY popular and probably had thousands of fans, I don't really think there was anything at all to suggest to readers who didn't know him personally that Airplane was struggling just from his one novel which he again, was literally posting new chapters nearly every day.

I said in another post that sy's experience is kind of like when you see an artist with a great art style, interesting OCS, and solid fundamentals, and then you subscribe to their patreon and they just post overwatch porn every day; this part of the scenario is kind of like if the only blizzard game you knew existed was overwatch, and you bought overwatch 2 because you really liked the characters but just ended up being like. Well this is dogshit and the most disappointing thing I've ever played. Would you really go and say well I'd better go see if Blizzard made other good games, or would you just say damn Blizzard is a greedy cash grabbing company that ruins all its properties with over monetization and overwatch 1 was just a fluke and go back to only playing overwatch 1 because you already bought it and are already an S tier player

so many punchlines in this fandom boil down to "haha airplane shitty author" and i feel like it's important to remember that SQH was writing pure porn because it literally paid his rent and mister NEET third son of wealthy family-Shen Yuan actually had no business criticising him for it as harshly as he did, especially considering that, you know, nobody was forcing him to read PIDW. obviously SQH had no way of knowing that his little fictional world would come to life - he wrote tragic backstories because, again, it paid his rent. in the end SY literally got to marry his ultimate blorbo and still dares complain??
