it's been so long since i last watched LOK that i honestly sort of forgot how much i don't like it. i'm on book 3 episode 7, i genuinely forgot that they just handed bumi airbending and brought back airbenders the weird way they did (when it would've been much more realistic that aang at some point found a group of very old survivors/descendants of survivors in hiding because genocide of a nomadic people who can fly just could not have caused a total extinction), i forgot how much mako doesn't have a personality, how much i dislike suyin and the way the narrative treats lin, and also... how little interaction korra and asami actually have with each other at this point??

like, you would think k*rrasami would be really important to me as a canon relationship between two bi women in the avatar universe, and i understand to an extent why it's written the way it is and won't deny how important it is overall as part of the history of LGBT representation in cartoons, but until now i sort of forgot why exactly i feel so little personal investment in it. i know they get more interactions later on but so far i wouldn't ship them if i didn't know what was coming because there's so little there. i don't even really like asami all that much outside of fanon stuff, nor do i particularly care about anyone at this point other than korra and bolin (and maybe kai and jinora too) and that's because everybody else either has extremely little personality imo, is annoying to me if they do have one, or is the product of the gaang being bad parents which is something i refuse to accept :(

and speaking of, the terrible way the show treated katara is actually pretty much the main thing i've always remembered about it and i have definitely ranted about that. the rest of it is just so incredibly meh for me that it doesn't even make me feel like angrily analyzing it and that's sad to me because there honestly was a lot of potential. like why don't we get an actual episode or two about mako and bolin's backstory instead of just hearing about it?? what happened with them actually does sound really interesting, but the show does nothing to make me care. it's like if ATLA had never given us any flashbacks about sokka and katara's backstory. and so much of books 1 and 2 is wasted on stupid annoying love triangle drama ajsjdjfkdk sometimes i wish i were more like my dad who is enjoying the show by simply not thinking very critically about it.

Heyo, Lady Oscar! I'm excited to see what you have to share! I'll do a separate ask for each character (six in total), to keep things simple.

So for this first ask... well, I have to start with Kuvira, of course~

Okay! Let’s do the thing starting with my main girl, Kuvira. *cracks knuckles*

1. Sexuality headcanon 

I've been headcanoning Kuvira as bisexual since I began writing fanfics about her. I personally don't see Baatar Jr. as a beard in their relationship because she seemed to sincerely care about him in canon (until she didn't, lol!) I also don't buy the comphet argument because IMHO, it doesn't fit her personality. I think she's demiromantic, and specifically with Asami and Baatar Jr. I can see her as sapiosexual. She surrounded herself with three intelligent people in the likes of Baatar Jr, Varrick and Zhu Li (and a token himbo, Bolin) on her inner circle so I believe she has a thing for intelligence. Fandom usually headcanons her as a top or dom but I see her more of a switch, especially with Asami and Korra, and between them it's pretty much an endless battle for dominance in the bedroom. 😏

I also lowkey ship her with Mako who I also headcanon as bi so it’s a Bi4Bi scenario, and in this case she’s more of a top because I do agree with the headcanon that Mako is more of a bottom. Fun fact: her voice actress Zelda Williams is bi, as it is Janet Varney, Korra’s VA.  

2. OTP

Oooh, this is a tough one because although OTP stands for “One True Pairing” I ship her pretty much equally with both Asami and Korra. With Korra, I indulge in the angsty, dramatic side of things. They have so many parallels that are ingrained in canon that it makes for an interesting exercise to explore the ways they resemble each other and in the ways their differences serve to complement and balance each other. It’s basically a lot of “the sunshine who can kill you and the badass who can kill you” relationship meme with these two. 🤣

With Asami I play on “what if” canon divergence scenarios which make for more lighthearted and flirty situations. They make for such an amazing power couple that is just too darned good. Plus their sexual chemistry is off the roof, a “can’t keep their hands off each other” kind of chemistry that's way too much fun. 😉

3. BROTP

Although he's the romantic interest in canon, I headcanon Junior as more of a second in command/partner in crime than as significant other material and they’re very much BROTP in my stories. Jinora is my other candidate as BROTP for Kuvira in a Republic City setting because Kuvira is a jock/dancer/soldier who is also cunning, smart, and well versed in strategy,  so I can see her bonding with Jinora over books and history. And of course, my beloved Lin Beifong and Kuvira would bond by swapping stories and gossip about Suyin, and boy I bet they both have a lot to talk about Su. I think they would realize they have more in common than they think since they’re both the type to bottle up their emotions and to put their work before everything else, and they both wanted to impress their maternal figures. Lin would be an excellent mentor and friend for Kuvira, since Lin won't take crap from anyone so shr would keep Kuvira in the straight and narrow with her no nonsense attitude.

4. NOTP

I basically don’t ship her with any of the Beifongs but the big NOTP for me is Suyin. I just can’t shake the mentor/protege relationship off my mind to see them even remotely romantic. From an objective standpoint, I can see the appeal with all their drama but it's a big nope for me.

5. First headcanon that pops into my head?

She’s a sleepwalker. Her childhood trauma manifested in sleepwalking which was pretty severe during her first years with the Beifongs but she grew out if it gradually as she grew up. Following the events of Book 4 and Ruins of the Empire which ends with her in house arrest, her sleepwalking came back but not as bad as when she was a child, which it’s fortunate because I can’t imagine the mess she would leave behind while bending in her sleep. 😱

6: favorite line from this character 

"I owe the Avatar my life. Her power is beyond anything I could ever hope to achieve. I'll accept  whatever punishment the world sees fit”. 

This is from The Last Stand. Although the entire scene with Korra and Kuvira in the Spirit World is amazing since we get to witness Kuvira’s emotional breakdown, it's in her surrender that we see what we can consider the beginning of her path toward redemption, meaning that her story is not over yet. 

7. One way in which I relate to this character 

We're both familiarized with military service and the concept of discipline and service to the nation since I also served. I also relate in the need to prove ourselves, something that is evident in the way she ends up emulating her mentor Suyin and in having strained relationships with siblings, like the one she had with Opal. Come to think of it, having strained relationships with siblings seems like a very Beifong thing to do. 🤔

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character

The whole having her foster brother end up as her fiancee thing is kinda weird so I totally get Opal when she was all weirded out with the news of their engagement.

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?

Both! 🤣

Thank you to depressed-bi-bitch for the request, this was a lot of fun writing!

When Suyin was creating Zaofu, she knew she needed a dependable supply of metal. The valley, where eventually Zaofu would be erected, was a small mining village. It had an abundance of precious metals, but were predominantly used in trade with neighboring villages. There, Suyin met your family, the esteemed owners of one of the largest mines of the village. Suyin was eloquent with her ideas and clear passion for leading people. Her husband, Baatar, had already made a name for himself as an architect from Ba Sing Se. Meanwhile your family was one of the established families of the village, producing most of the metals and negotiating with outsiders trade deals. Together, your family and the Beifongs created Zaofu, a technological city of the future.

Growing up in a sprawling metal city was like living in a story tale. Big spiraling metal structures, an abundance of art and culture blooming all around you, and spending most of your childhood with the Beifong family were your earliest memories. You were surprised one day, while playing with Opal in the Beifong estate, to find Suyin bringing in another child. The girl seemed older than both you and Opal and she had a firm pout on her lips. Her clothes were more plain compared to what usual Zaofu citizens wore and she wouldn’t make eye contact with anyone. 

“This is Kuvira. She’ll be living with us and be part of our family now, Opal. Think of her like your sister,” she introduced.

From being the adored only daughter to having to share with another little girl was not easy for Opal to adjust. Including sharing you, her childhood best friend.

“I don’t want a new sister!”

The way Kuvira’s face was already apprehensive, turned into a scowl quickly as she looked between the two of you before running off.

While Suyin sat down with Opal and tried to explain Kuvira’s situation, you went off to find Kuvira. She was sitting down under a low hanging awning by the river. You could hear small sniffles coming from her. Six year old you approached her without caution, bumbling up to her with the perkiness only a child could contain.

“Hi.” You introduced yourself to her with a wide toothy grin and a welcoming outstretched hand. She jumped and turned around, quickly wiping away a stray tear. Her deadpan glare penetrated your outstretched hand left open. Being a child, you didn’t let it affect you. Instead you asked, “Do you want to come to my house? I have a dollhouse we can play with!”

Kuvira hesitated, looking from your still extended hand to your beaming face.

“Opal doesn’t like me.”

“Opal’s not coming.”

Oh to grow up with Kuvira. She was quite hot tempered as a child. And you admit, some days it was hard being her friend. She let her emotions take control, most of the time not realizing that she was bending until the dolls were disfigured under her metal grip. You never blamed it on Kuvira though, and you always came back to each other at the end of the day. It took a long time under Suyin’s guidance for Kuvira to gain a better understanding of her own earthbending. But once she did, it was like a flip switched.

While gaining more control, she became more reserved. She pulled farther from the Beifongs and moved out of the estate, choosing to live with the guards in the dormitories instead when she became a teenager. It didn’t change your close relationship though. From running around your estate playing games to her joining you in your metals lab in your research to helping her study for her test to join the Metal Guards; you and Kuvira supported one another through everything.

In the back of your mind you always knew things weren’t great for Kuvira at the Beifongs. But it was always something so hard to bring up to Kuvira whenever you tried to get her to talk about it. It also complicated your friendship with Opal, navigating between their polar personalities was always a challenge. So you opted not to, instead playing mostly neutral grounds and after she moved out, things did get better. 

As you got older, there was more pressure on you to take on the family business. Your whole life you’ve studied metals and how different properties of metals work together to create new things. An inventor, truly gifted, but there were always parts of you that wanted to leave Zaofu.

“I don’t want to study rocks my whole life. I want to learn from other cultures, get a bigger insight!” you confessed one day to Kuvira. You lay back on the soft grass of the lawn. You were visiting the Beifongs casually one afternoon when you ran into your favorite guard. It took minimal convincing for her to take a break from duty to lie with you. It was known that Kuvira always had a soft spot for you. It took one big smile to get her to crumble to you.

But seeing you smile was something she could never get enough of. “You wouldn’t leave me here alone, would you?” Kuvira semi joked.

“I’d take you with me, of course,” you laughed. “See the world together. Maybe fight some bad guys, who knows?”

Kuvira knew that would never be possible. Not with how Suyin ran things, but she didn’t say that, choosing instead to have a lighter hearted moment with you.

Going through the ranks, she saw potential in the Metal Guards, in the people of Zaofu actually. The fact that Suyin rejected most international requests, slowly infuriated her over the years. She watched as her fellow soldiers grew in strength, but all of it went to waste within the metal domes. Kuvira had long surpassed everything Suyin taught her, choosing to go off in her own studies to continue growing as a bender. When not on duty, you’d find her studying different types of bending in the Zaofu library or coming to your lab to practice with rarer metals. Sometimes it seemed like Kuvira never stopped at bettering herself.

You were mesmerized every time you saw Kuvira use her bending. Something as simple as making casual shapes from a slab of meteorite could keep you entertained for hours. It was times like these that were your favorite. She had her armor off and was sporting a long green sleeved spandex shirt with her dark green uniform pants. Her braid was slightly disfigured and helmet thrown off to the side somewhere. She was playing with a piece of meteorite, leaning forward on the bench as she manipulated it with firm concentration. The way her hands moved delicately through the air with precision; every crook and bend of her fingers and knuckles; how soft yet also strong they looked as they bent the metal into a small flower. It rested perfectly in her slender palm as she handed it to you.

It made your stomach flutter and a heat build in your chest. You reached out to take it from her and suddenly feeling nervous. Almost immediately, a gust of wind blew Kuvira over the bench making her tumble down and the metal flower scattering somewhere on the ground.

You both were left gaping. You were born as a non bender, so suddenly being able to airbend made you freak out. Kuvira grabbed your wrists, telling you to breathe as you started rambling off about never being able to bend before and not being the daughter of Avatar Aang and what if your mother had secretly had an affair with the AVATAR and oh god what would your father think-

“We need to find Suyin.”

Learning that Opal also gained airbending made you feel better, and it was something you two could bond over. Suddenly you were spending more time with Opal, trying to learn more about this new weird power to Kuvira’s dismay.

When Avatar Korra and her crew came to Zaofu to rebuild the Air Nation, you laughed off the idea of becoming an Air Nomad. Your future was set in the metals your family mined. You were supposed to live your life in Zaofu, continue your legacy here to grow the city.

“This is where I belong,” you said sheepishly. Korra seemed disappointed, but if that’s what you wanted there was nothing she could do. Although she did debate dragging you on to the ship, kidnapping an heiress to an empire would definitely cause an international crisis that Korra frankly couldn’t afford.

Kuvira was relieved to say the least. The fear of losing her closest friend didn’t sit well with her. But she also saw how you were with your new bending, carefully exploring what your bending could do; how it frustrated you when you couldn’t gain your own footing straight or when wind would blow back in your face.

“Maybe you should consider it.” Kuvira’s response surprised you. It was another day at your estate this time laying on the grass. It was one of Kuvira’s few days off. When she became the Captain, her free time became very limited, but this afternoon was a peaceful rarity. Tonight would be Opal’s farewell dinner, where you would be saying your final goodbyes before she boarded the airship to the Northern Air Temple. You were casually bending a circle of air above your heads, watching as leaves swirl around in a hypnotizing way. It immediately dissipates upon Kuvira’s confession, leaves slowly falling around the two of you.

“What?” you snort. “I thought you’d be the first person to ask me to stay.”

It left a lump in Kuvira’s throat. She never wanted to be the reason you held back your potential. She knew how talented you were as an inventor, but to bring that strength as an airbender? And the opportunity for you to build a nation that was up until recently deemed extinct? Kuvira knows an honor like that is something you’d thrive in, and the only way you could do that is to leave Zaofu.

So with some more convincing from Kuvira, you came around to the thought of being an Air Nomad. Sure shaving your head wasn’t the most appealing thing, but to be able to explore the world outside of Zaofu? It felt like this was your true calling all along. And Kuvira was the one to help you realize that. You gaze softly at her face, trying to find any hint of doubt you could. But she wholeheartedly believed in you and that in the end is what had you knocking on Korra’s door before the big dinner.

“Avatar Korra, I’ve changed my mind. I will join Opal to the Northern Air Temple and help rebuild the Air Nation.” Korra’s face broke into a wide grin and she gave a big cheer, deeming another success in her Avatar duties. You smiled back, feeling giddy at the thought of finding something more than rocks and metals for your future.

Seeing you and Opal boarding the aircraft shattered Kuvira’s heart. Her face is stone and her back is straight, watching the two of you talk wildly about your new adventures to come.

It seemed like at the last second, you pulled away from Opal and turned around, catching Kuvira’s unwavering gaze. You bite your bottom lip and tell Opal to go on without you, that’d you catch up momentarily. She was confused, but realized what you were doing when you ran back down the ramp and towards Kuvira.

Before she knows what’s happening or can ask what in the spirits you were doing, you nearly plow Kuvira over with a bone crushing hug, knocking her helmet right off her head. Burying your face into the crook of her neck, you feel her muscles tense under your touch, and then melt right into your hug. Strong arms wrap around you and clunky armor gets in the way.

But Kuvira can’t picture something more perfect.

She is speechless and squeezes her eyes shut, willing any tears to hold back. This was a momentous day for you, and she didn’t want your potentially last moment with her to be a sniveling mess. Instead she tries to memorize the way your hair smells, how firm your torso feels under her arms, how soft and warm your skin is. Everything she possibly can in these fleeting seconds with you.

“This isn’t goodbye,” you whispered in her ear. The way your breath fanned across her neck made Kuvira’s eyes flutter. She could stay in this embrace forever. “I will see you again.”

“I know,” she breathed out, suddenly finding it hard to find her voice. “I know.” It was something she had to tell herself more than to you.

You hesitated, wanting to say more. But how could you tell Kuvira that most nights you fell asleep thinking about what her lips would feel like against yours? How could you tell her that you still dreamed of traveling the world with her one day? How do you tell your childhood best friend that you’ve been in love with them when you’re about to board a ship to a new life?

Instead you take the chance and lean in, placing a soft quick kiss on her cheek just below her mole under her eye. With one last watery smile, you turn and board the ship. Your future terrified you, but you know for certain that you will keep your promise and return to Zaofu for her. One day.

If you had turned around you would’ve seen Kuvira steeled in stoicism, seemingly unaffected by your gesture. Meanwhile, inside she was on fire. Her cheek was burning where your lips touched. She had to replay the moment again and again in her mind to make sure it wasn’t her own imagination making it up. But it was real; the feeling of your hesitant lips pressed against her cheek made the flush in her chest grow. Her breath comes out in one shaky stream as she lifts the radio to her ear for the guards to close the domes.

And as the metal flower-like structure enclose her in, Kuvira can’t help but let her eyes linger on the sky where your ship disappeared.

This isn’t goodbye.

we’ve been mutuals for ages so i thought it was time to ask about your unpopular atla/tlok/kyoshi opinions :D

xD Tbh I feel like my opinions tend to be more controversial with Avatar than unpopular. Obviously I'm open to discussion if anyone wants to have one or if anyone needs clarification on any of these opinions lol. My goal isn't to cause fighting and more discourse but rather open up some discussion. Mostly I'm a to each their own kind of person; even if I don't like a certain ship or agree with certain headcanons I won't be bashing people who do ship/have them. And I don't think that xyz headcanon is wrong just because I disagree with that.

Disclaimers aside lol;

Some of the ones that I know are unpopular for Avatar:

I don't ship Azula/Therapy (there's a lot to get into here and I've done it quite a bit). My bottom line is that I don't mind Azula/Therapy so long as it isn't being used as a means to belittle people who do ship her with other characters. I'm also fine with it in the light that Azula/Character while she's getting therapy or something like that. There's a lot more to it, anyone can feel free to ask for clarification here. But I kind of don't really even see it as a ship so much as a concept. And as a joke I don't really find it that funny as I feel like it takes a very serious topic and makes it sound 'cute' or 'quirky' and that just ain't it for me.

I don't ship Zukka. Tbh I don't really feel strongly about it at all.

I don't ship Mailee either. I've seen quite a bit of Mailee content that is pretty anti-Azula so I tend to just stay away from that. Though I'm down for recs with fic and art that aren't anti-Azula

I don't think that Azula is a lesbian. I feel like she is Bi/Ace or Aro/Ace. Which is probably due to me being aro/ace and wanting some rep lol.

I am very very neutral to Suki. I feel like a lot of people really like her. I think she's just eh. I have no strong opinion on her either which way.

I don't really hate any character. There are some characters I like less/don't find as interesting but I don't really hate any of them.

I do feel kind of bad for Ozai as he was also probably abused as a kid. The reason I don't feel as though he's redeemable though is because he's a grown man who is pretty set in his ways.

I feel like Katara's power/strength is more in healing than fighting. Like that's her specialty and it kind of bothers me when people downplay that because imo it's refreshing to have a character who is considered great and powerful not because they are the strongest fighter but because they are a great healer and defender. Aang is also a good example of this.

I don't really talk about this much because it really isn't that deep xD but I get confused when people talk about Katara's bloodbending as if she can just do it any time??? Correct me if I'm wrong but she can only do it during a full moon. Amon and his family are the only people who could do it without a full moon. So it kind of bothers me when people just casually toss 'oh Katara could totally kick Azula/Toph/Zuko's ass with bloodbending anytime.'

I like both Azula and Zuko and feel like both of them either get babied or demonized. And that takes away from the complexities of both of their characters.

Iroh isn't completely wise. He has moments where he's not morally correct. And he should have moments like this because it would be unrealistic for him to never do wrong ever.

Kataang vs Zutara is getting really old.

I feel like this fandom can be very hostile to Azula fans and it gets hard to deal with so sometimes I have to just avoid the tag for a while. Idk if this one is an unpopular opinion or if other people feel the same. But then again I've heard that Katara and Aang have also had an influx of hate as well. In general it's just sad to see such cool characters getting talked about in the ways that some people talk about them. I've seen people say that "it's Azula's fault that she's being abused by Ozai" and "Katara needs to shut up about her mom and move on" and "Zuko is whiney and overdramatic." And these statements are just :S Basically I wish that the nice people could start talking over all of the people who just seem to enjoy bashing their least favorite characters more than they like talking about their favorites.

I don't entirely hate the comics. There are aspects of them that I hate but there are also parts that I really enjoyed.

Not a fan of Suyin. Not just because I like Kuvira but also because of her backstory with Lin. NGL she struck me as kind of a brat.

I'm not a big fan of Opal or Zhu Li either. Like I don't hate either of them but they just aren't my cup of tea.

I liked Tanho from the start.

Meelo is kind of annoying imo.

I don't like Mako at all. He lost me when he cheated on Asami.

Idk if this is unpopular but I didn't really like season 2.

I was kind of disappointed with Kuvira's backstory. I liked aspects of it but I had different expectations.

I don't think that it was a rushed backstory so much as the writers only had like 80 pages per comic to work with. It would have been better if it were in the show or something.

Korra wasn't a bad Avatar. She had her own road blocks to overcome and her own learning to do just like Aang.

I don't really have any for Kyoshi except for maybe that I don't think that Kyoshi is this aggressive murder machine lol.

i did it for atla, so here’s my headcanons for the sexualities of lok characters

starting off strong with the bi queens, korra and asami, of course.

mako is a disaster bi as well

i adore both gay and bi wu equally

bolin and opal are the straight friends, and the only heterosexuals that deserve rights (although i do love bi/pan bolin and opal)

kya is confirmed lesbian, which is wonderful. i do have a soft spot for kyalin, and boy, lin is not straight in any way. you cannot look at that women and tell me that she exclusively likes men.

i headcanon most of the air nation as pan, so that’s what i think of jinora as. same with kai. ikki and meelo are both babies so they’re simply not allowed to be attracted to anyone ever. (that’s my older sister instinct talking)

kuvira’s a lesbian.

the air nomads are canonically very accepting and open to loving whoever they’re inclined to, so i’d say that both pema and tenzin don’t have any labels for their sexualities.

bumi does not have straight vibes at all. i like to think of him as pan, but he never outright says it, he just loves whoever he wants and no one questions it.

now for the beifongs (aside from opal and lin who were already mentioned)

suyin and baatar sr. are both bi, because i say so.

wei and wing aren’t straight, but i don’t have a specific headcanon for their sexualities.

i feel like huan is either ace or demi, but i don’t think he’s aromantic.

My Oriented Aroace Headcanons From 8 Fandoms

Oriented Aroace is an aspec identity where someone does not experience sexual or romantic attraction but experience other forms of attraction in a way that causes another nonaspec label describing sexuality to feel significant enough to have a place alongside one’s aroace identity. For more information on this term, here is the info page on the oriented aroace subreddit and here is the wiki page on it.

Headcanon is a subbranch of fanon, meaning headcanon is something generally not accepted as canon but some fans choose to believe about the original content. In the queer community, it is common to headcanon characters as queer. Sometimes it’s with good reason, sometimes it’s just because we like the characters, sometimes it’s because we see something of ourselves within the characters. 

Here are some of my oriented aroace headcanons.

1. Sai (Naruto)

This is by far my favorite aroace headcanon but I don’t talk about it much because I don’t want to support the stereotype that aromantics are heartless or that asexuals are traumatized. In Naruto Shippuden, Sai is a character who does not experience emotions after an illegal black ops organization killed his brother and brain washed him. He does, however, recover his emotions and learns to be very in touch with them. In Boruto, he is married to Ino and has a son named Inojin.

I headcanon Sai as pan-oriented aroace, possibly demialterous as well, but he experiences some degree of internalized homophobia and aphobia which leads him to pursue a romantic relationship with Ino. I don’t doubt that he loves her, he definitely does but I don’t think he loves her in the same way that she loves him. I wrote about this for Aromantic Writing Month. I believe that Sai initially started courting Ino because that was what was expected of him. Ino went along with it because she is attracted to him. At some point she probably realized Sai doesn’t quite feel the same way as her but they talked about it and continued their relationship as a allo-aspec qpr.

2. Rook Blonko (Ben 10) 

Rook Blonko is Ben’s (work) partner in Ben 10: Omniverse. He is an alien from the planet Revonnah. When we see his homeplanet, we learn that he is very attractive by Revonnahgander and all the local girls are interested in him but he is bothered by it, only showing affection for one girl named Rayona. They end up dating later in the series. A couple villains show interest in Rook as well and he is usually bothered by it or has mixed feelings with no desire for reciprocation. 

I headcanon him as hetero-angled aroace, specifically gray/ frayromantic and acespike. Gray romanticism means that someone is aromantic but can experience some kind of limited romantic attraction or experiences romantic attraction under specific circumstances. Frayromantic is essentially the opposite of demiromantic. Someone may experience romantic attraction that fades as they get to know the other person. Acespike means that someone is asexual but can sometimes experience spikes of sexual attraction. 

If you have seen the show, you may know where my thoughts are coming from. Rook mostly shows romantic interest in Rayona before they start dating. Once they’re in a relationship, their feelings seem very platonic and their relationship is much like a qpr. This may be because of their age, lack of experience, or their culture but I’d like to imagine that Rayona feels the same way as Rook and they are in a qpr.

The only other character Rook has shown interest in is Isosceles Vreedle. He is briefly attracted her during a battle but doesn’t seem to have any intent on acting on his feelings (presumably because he is in a relationship). He seems to be aware that this is out of character for him, which leads me to believe that he is acespike. 

3. Alain (Pokémon)

Alain is the star of the Mega Evolution specials and Ash’s main rival in the Kalos League. I headcanon him as gay-oriented aroace.

I don’t have much of a reason for this. Headcanons don’t necessarily need reasons but I’m still going to try to explain this one.

He never has any romantic interests in the show, probably because we don’t see much of him and his story is very focused on his Pokémon training. There are many characters who are solely focused on Pokemon training and that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re aroace but with Alain, I can’t really see him ever wanting to settle down or pursue a relationship though and he doesn’t seem like a women’s man. 

His perfect life is retiring young from a decent battle career on a Pokemon ranch where he works as a Pokemon professor, giving out starter pokemon and providing a place for trainers to send their pokemon when their parties are full. He won’t have many visitors but maybe he’ll have a close companion to keep him company and help out with any projects he’s working on.

4. Toph (Avatar: The Last Airbender/ The Legend Of Korra)

Toph is Aang’s earthbending teacher in ATLA, the founder of metalbending in the comics, and Lin and Suyin’s mother in TLOK. I headcanon her as sapphic or trixic-oriented aroace.

Sapphic and trixic are both non-exclusive terms for attraction to women but sapphic is specifically for women and trixic is for non-binary people. Canonically, Toph is a girl but she is very free spirited and independent and I feel like she wouldn’t let something like gender limit her.

In TLOK, Toph does mention that she tried to have relationships with Lin and Suyin’s fathers but it didn’t really work out. I imagine that Toph is sex favorable and likes sex as kind of a fun way to enjoy herself but does not experience sexual attraction nor does she feel a need to have regular partners. Similar goes for romance. She is romance-indifferent but does not like it much.

The lesbian Toph headcanon is a popular one. Not really sure why but Toph seems like a ladies’ woman. She likes to have her fun and she just finds women to be better companions than men in these aspects. She doesn’t get attatched easily though and she’s not really into the commitment. 

5. Korvo (Solar Opposites)

Again, I feel like this plays into a stereotype that I don’t want to support but these are my headcanons and I will do with them as I want. Korvo is an alien who is having a hard time adjusting to living on Earth. We know that his species has no biological sex and do not reproduce sexually but many of them choose genders, enjoy sexual activity, and pursue romantic relationships. I headcanon Korvo as bi-oriented aroace, possibly bi-electio aroace.

I have not seen the most recent season but in season 1, Korvo is mostly uninterested in anything outside of returning the ship. We have seen him in real no romantic contexts but he and Terry are co-parents of sorts. We also see him in a couple of sexual contexts. When he got zapped by a ray that removed his intelligence, he tried humping Terry and when he and Terry tried going to college, he remained on his side of his and Terry’s shared bed when Terry brought home sexual partners.

I don’t think Terry and Korvo are in a relationship or a qpr but am not completely opposed to the idea. My point was just that we know he isn’t repulsed by the idea of doing traditionally romantic or sexual things with someone who is masculine in nature. I think he could also appreciate what a woman brings to the table, as seen when he built a robot to fulfill the role of wife and mother in the house.

I don’t think Korvo is interested in a relationship but he does value the companionship and wouldn’t be unhappy with a partner. He may struggle to maintain a partnership but I don’t think gender would be much of a factor.

6. Todd Chavez (BoJack Horseman)

Todd is BoJack’s off-and-on best friend/ roommate. Canonically, he is asexual and heteroromantic (presumably, all we know for sure is that he is alloromantic). I headcanon him as straight-oriented aroace, specifically heteroqueerpatonic and panplatonic.

I love that Todd is canonically asexual and I appreciate that they showed an asexual character who is not aromantic. But, all of Todd’s relationships have that queerplatonic vibe. When he described the kind of relationship he wanted with Emily, it didn’t sound like a romantic relationship. What he had with Yolanda certainly wasn’t romantic. Maybe it was just the writing but Todd seemed most happy when his relationship resembled a qpr. When he was dating Maude, the lines between romance and friendship were blurry and they seemed very happy, and that included not doing traditionally romantic things like getting married.

I could also see Todd as greyromantic. For him, I feel like having a label isn’t really that big of a deal. Being able to say he was asexual was a big deal for him but he just wants to be himself and find whatever makes him happy. Sex and a traditional romantic relationship don’t really seem to be a part of that.

7. Silver Surfer (Marvel Comics)

Again, this isn’t one I talk about much because I don’t want to support the stereotype that aromantics or asexuals are inhuman or lacking emotion. Before becoming the Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd is in a relationship on his home planet and he does express interest in a few women after becoming the Silver Surfer. I headcanon him as straight-oriented aroace.

Some of it may have to do with Galactus’s interference. Maybe not. The Surfer doesn’t need sex or romance (no one does but you catch my drift) but he doesn’t really want it either. Sometimes it is portrayed from a sense of duty but we don’t really know what he’s feeling. He’s been one of my favorite characters for years so I may just be projecting but it feels right.

He can get lonely. He wants a companion but I don’t think he’d want a romantic one or even a queerplatonic partner. He’d be most happy with a friend and he’d get all the fulfillment he needs from one. A romantic partner might be a bit too much.

8. Gina Linetti (Brooklyn 99)

Gina is Jake’s childhood friend, Captain Holt’s assistant, and Boyle’s... something. I’ve seen a lot of headcanons that she is pansexual but I headcanon her as heteroflexible-oriented aroace.

Gina, like Toph, is just kind of doing her own thing. I feel like she’d be sex favorable and romance indifferent. Sex is fun, relationships are alright, she’s just living her best life. Men are nice, women are too. She’s just living life and rocking with whatever rolls her way.

When she has her daughter, she does want to settle down a bit but not with a man. She loves the kid and steps up to her new responsibility but she doesn’t let it change her. She’s still as wild and free and she doesn’t want or need anyone.

What about the earthbenders? I mean, think of one that gives you cishet vibes? Even the monarchy (even though we hate them here) - Hou-Ting is a despicable caricature, but Kuei and Wu are very much twinks

oh long feng is almost definitely straight*. but you know what. points. i mean, maaaybe haru’s dad, or those earthbending bullies in zuko alone, but i can’t think of any other significant character who says cishet.

like, toph is definitively not cishet. lin is a butch lesbian. suyin strikes me as someone who’d try and call themselves ‘heteroflexible’ before admitting, yeah, okay, they’ve slept with some women before (she’s bisexual but she’s still suyin). literally none of her kids are cishet. kuvira’s a lesbian. ghazan is bi and probably makes bad puns about it. the boulder is definitely not cishet because please, cishet wrestlers, in this day and age? he’s an icon for all gym mascs out there.

as for the royal family, hou-ting and kuei i think are both caricatures (was discussing with nos about the possibility of kuei being based on puyi the other day and the possibly terrible implications of that) but wu is solidly a twink.

*(there’s an interesting theory - can’t find the link for it sadly - i’ve seen go around that long feng is perhaps supposed to be a eunuch, much in the manner that eunuchs served the emperor & the imperial palace during imperial china, eventually becoming a core layer of the state bureaucracy, which i think would make this question moot. ignoring that, he’s just a straight man).

While we're at it, here's my gender and orientation headcanons for ATLA's main cast and some TLOK characters.

Aang: cis M and Idk, pan? It's hard to tell.

Katara: cis F, het.

Sokka: cis M, het.

Suki: cis F, pan.

Toph: I'd say cis F, lesbian or cis F, whatever aro ace but her crush on Sokka is so cute and she dated Kanto so it'd be kinda at odds with canon so I'll go with cis F, pan aro ace.

Zuko: cis M and potentially somewhere on the het ace spectrum. On a side note, Zuko is a very passionate and stubborn character who sets a goal and doesn't stray from the path he has to follow to achieve it. He's also all about honor and for these reasons I don't think he'll ever develop any kind of romantic feelings or sexual attraction for/to anyone other than Mai. He fell in love with her as a child and I think he's the kind of kid who at like 8 yo decides he's gonna marry her later and start a family with her and, for the rest of his life, there's no more questioning that. It'll never even cross his mind that he can rethink his plan for his future.

Azula: cis F, het aro ace. No one is good enough for her anyway.

Mai: cis F and, like Zuko, potentially somewhere on the het ace spectrum, though not for the same reasons. I don't think Mai is the type to engage with people overall. Also, if she feels romantically or has any kind of sexual attraction to someone, she just won't pursue it as she's just not into dating, in every sense of the word, and prefers to spend her time developing various skills and educating herself. If it wasn't for Zuko, she'd stay single her whole life (no offense to the Kei Lo fans, if they even exist; I do like him a bit and ship Mailo in a AU where Zuko doesn't exist).

Ty Lee: cis F and straight up straight.

Korra: cis F, pan. Canonically bi, though I see bi as being attracted to people of the same sexe as yours and people of a different sexe, so I don't make any difference between bi and pan personally but I know some do and don't consider bi as all-inclusive. That's why I use pan everywhere.

Mako: cis M, pan.

Asami: trans F, pan. Canonically bi, though I see bi as being attracted to people of the same sexe as yours and people of a different sexe, so I don't make any difference between bi and pan personally but I know some do and don't consider bi as all-inclusive. That's why I use pan everywhere.

Kya: cis F, lesbian (Has she ever been confirmed a lesbian or was it only stated she dated women?).

Tenzin: cis M, het.

Lin: cis F, pan, perhaps in the aro ace spectrum.

Eska: cis F, aro ace. I hate how she was with Bolin.

Ming-Hua: cis F, confused aro lesbian who's been into women her whole life but has a crush on Ghazan. So actually pan aro though he's the only male she'll ever have a crush on.

P'Li: cis F and It's Complicated™. Due to her traumatic past, she's never had the time to think about dating and question her orientation. She had major trust issues when she met Zaheer and for a while, he's been the only other human around her. She slowly fell in love with him while having no clue what this feeling was. If it wasn't for him, she'd stay single because she needs to have a very close bond with someone to have or let herself have affection for them.

I don't have any precise headcanons for the rest of the TLOK characters.

B - A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind

This is actually a bit of a hard question for me because so often I go into a fandom already shipping something lowkey because I’ve seen the gifs or read a fic.

I know that I got my love for the Percy/Nico/Annabeth OT3 from @kaikamahine and that’s probably not something I would have originally considered, but I mean, I went into that series already shipping Percy/Nico because of her fic so probably not the best example. 

Maybe Tony/Steve? That’s one of those pairings that still doesn’t completely click with me, but enough people have written great content that I kind of ship them now.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr

The best example of this one is probably The Untamed. When I initially started seeing it pop up in my emails from writers I’m subscribed to on Ao3, I was kind of like okay whatever. And then it started showing up on my dashboard. And then it started showing up on my dashboard a lot.

One of the posts I ended up coming across said it was on Netflix, so I added it to my to-watch list. But it was actually this post that pushed me over the edge. Which is funny, because well. That isn’t even a pairing I ended up shipping very hard? 

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all?

I probably do, but nothing that I could really articulate well. Most of my headcanons have to do with my own writing, like how if I’m writing a Kingdom Hearts AU, Axel is always going to be Kairi’s brother and Sora and Roxas are always going to be twins. But let me see.

Derek and Stiles are bi. John Sheppard has been holding a torch for Rodney McKay since season one. Billy Hargrove is gay. Sokka and Suki had an on again/off again polyamorous relationship with Toph for the entirety of their marriage which resulted in Suyin...

SO another AU I came up with was the ‘Mako and Bolin Zaofu AU’ which was really weird and never fully thought through so it is DEAD but you know people might find it interesting.

So pre-book 1 Suyin is in Republic City for some conference about city design or something with Baatar Sr and like whoop she bumps into 10 year old Bolin who tries to rob her and gives her a sob story about his brother being really sick. She gives him twenty and tells him to scram. Later she bumps into him again (what a coincidence) and like he’s upset because his brother is sick and she thinks it might not be a lie. She pays for Mako to see a doctor. Later she starts feeling sorry for them so she decides to bring them to Zaofu. Baatar is like ‘you can’t save every child’ but Suyin is like ‘I’m doing a good thing shut up’. Bolin is like super happy to but Mako is more cautious about this random lady wanting to help them but she wins him round and gives him 200 hundred yuans to buy tickets back to Republic CIty if he hates it.

So they live in Zaofu where they have school and shit and grow up happy and well. They live in like a children’s home with Kuvira (I wrote this before the comics) but meet with the Beifong family fairly regularly. Mako and Bolin become fairly close with them and get into all sorts of shenanigans with the twins and Opal. Bolin loves Zaofu wholeheartedly. Mako feels a little more at odds with Zaofu and feels useless/alienated in this metalbending City

Bolin struggles with school and eventually metalbends, but badly. His career is in the theatre. Bolin becomes close with Opal but he’s like oblivious to her obvious feelings. There’s a prom and Bolin almost goes with someone else and Opal is upset but tries not to show it and Mako tells Bolin he is a dumb boy. Bolin realises his mistake and goes with Opal and they start to date and they have a very steady relationship.

Mako excels at school unlike Bolin, and learns lightning bending. He has a short relationship with a girl in school which ends when he’s accused of being insensitive. He doesn’t become a police officer because Zaofu has a low crime rate and it is a boring job so he becomes some sort of like, logistics officer in the security forces, i.e. he helps move people around. He meets a soldier named Seung who is totally into him and Mako is like ‘what? but okay i guess’ and they start to date and have a terrible on again off again relationship. Mako takes the relationship seriously but struggles to open up; Seung opens up a lot but when Mako doesn’t, Seung doesn’t take the relationship that seriously and acts flippant/eyes wander etc, they break up but then usually make up some months later. Rinse and repeat like four times.

Bolin develops a fairly obvious hatred for Seung that he is shocked that people know about. He really wishes Mako would do better, and Bolin has had a pretty steady relationship for a couple of years now so he’s the ‘wise’ one and just doesn’t get this relationship at all if it makes Mako unhappy. Basically Mako still has relationship problems but it’s Bi now so it’s better.

Meanwhile sometimes they go ‘wow heard of those equalists in Republic City? Glad we’re not there’ or ‘heard the southern watering just got invaded!’. Korra and Asami meet at the party in book 1 and become friends without any jealously (like Korra broke into the probending arena and was immediately kicked out). But the plot of TLOK happens generally the same without Mako and Bolin. But the major events of book 1 and 2 happen. Opal then develops airbending and the air nation and Korra and Asami come round to meet them. Bolin tries to pair Mako with one of them during a dinner he has with them and Opal as well as he isn’t dating Seung at this point. Mako is like ‘wait which one’ and Bolin is like ‘I don’t know’ and this is the stupidest plot point but I wanted to make fun of the love triangle. Opal states bluntly at the end of the ‘date’ that they’re clearly into eachother than and that boys are dumb.

Anyway book 3 happens in some form. Bolin learns lavabending and they help save the airbenders at the end.

Meanwhile Kuvira always got along well with Mako and Bolin but Bolin finds her hard to get along with as an adult and Mako realises she’s kind of racist towards him. But then she decides to leave Zaofu with the troops and stabilise Ba Sing Se. Bolin is enamoured and decides to join but Mako is like ‘but she’s a dick towards firebenders.’ And Bolin is like ‘you must be mistaken Kuvira is great!’ And Mako is like ‘please listen to me’ and Bolin ignores him. They have a massive falling out over it and Bolin leaves. Seung also leaves with Kuvira so that relationship is also dead.

But anyway time skip three years Seung is on the frontlines and learns of the re-education camps and learns that fire and water benders are being sent to them. He manages to meet Bolin and is like “mako was right!” Bolin doesn’t believe Seung af first but comes around when he realises Seung is being serious and has nothing to gain from lying to him (Seung also hated Bolin and thought he was a meddling prick). They try and escape Kuvira captures them and they go to a re-education camp.

Meanwhile Mako has been chilling in Zaofu as normal. Zaofu is eventually invaded. The Beifongs don’t kneel to the Empire and Mako intends to do so as well but Baatar is like ‘hey no I trust you look after the city whilst we’re gone!” But obvs this goes tits up when Mako is taken prisoner for being a firebender by Kuvira’s regime. He’s like ‘where’s Bolin?’ And Kuvira lies and says he’s fighting for he good cause and believes in the Empire wholeheartedly. Mako sort of believes her?

Meanwhile Bolin’s breaks out of prison I guess and tries to get to Zaofu but by this point it’s overrun so he goes to Republic City and gets involved with defeating the colossus.

Meanwhile Mako is in a camp and bumps into Seung again, because of course he does. Mako is pretty much done at this point but they try and plan a break out.

But hooray, the colossus is defeated (idk how if Mako isn’t there to blow it up I never thought through how the tlok plot would really happen without Bolin and Mako tbh) and they’re re-united. Mako is peeved he wasn’t listened to but he does forgive Bolin.

Anyway Mako is sick of Zaofu st this point so Bolin suggest they try and trace their family in Ba Sing Se. They go to Ba Sing Se, and Seung asks if he and Mako can keep in touch, and they agree. The two brothers venture off to reconnect with their past.
