The Aftermath is story of what happens when our favorite mafia boss finds out the woman he hired to be his assistant, who he’s been sleeping with and has fallen in love with, is his rival’s daughter. The logical thing would be to have her killed because she knows too much, but he can’t bring himself to do it. So, he lets her go, even knowing she’s going to tell her father everything, and that his days in power are limited. Except, nothing happens. No tries to take him down. None of his plans are disrupted. Life goes back to the way it was before her. The only difference is how miserable and lonely he is. How much he misses her. It makes him suspicious, so he convinces threatens her friend to let him crash their coffee date, so he can ask her what the hell is going on.

This line from the fic sums it up pretty well: “She refused to tell her father anything about Bob’s organization because she loves him. He didn’t have her killed when he learned of her real identity because he loves her. It’s as simple and complicated as that.”

5. fav form of potato?: oh i love all potatoes! i think maybe home fries or hashbrowns?

7. what animal do you most look forward to at the aquarium?: ooh im fond of seals and penguins (tho im not sure penguins are at an aquarium). i also like the jellyfish, v pretty to watch!!

11. anything from your childhood you've held onto?: hmm i guess this means physical objects. otherwise wld like to say wonder or sensitivity lol. i have some stuffed animals from when i was little, not w me tho

WHY I LOVE IT

I’ve long been a fan (yes, a fan) of Leah’s work and while any number of their fics could appear on my list of recs, Before the Devil Comes For You stands out. This fic is a masterclass in world-building and setting up a story without revealing too much about the characters right away. As readers, we’re given just enough to get a sense of who they are and what they grapple with, and it makes you want to read on and learn everything you can about them. The changing point of view between Bob and Fairlight is an effective tool to understand their characters and the circumstances they are in. Leah's ability to create mood and atmosphere in this fic is impressive, making it feel intentionally stifling. It depicts a small, narrow-minded, and deeply religious community in the mid-70���s, and having grown up in a somewhat similar environment myself, it strikes a very particular chord. With an almost gothic tone, readers feel Bob’s wonder and curiosity as he walks the village for the first time. Like Bob, we’re struck by how out of touch with modern society it appears. Not only are the main characters three-dimensional people, but so are the secondary characters, and though we may not know as much about them, they still appear vivid and real. There’s something special about Bob in this fic. He’s a man whose gentleness hides so much pain and trauma, but he still wants to be open-minded and understanding of people and their experiences. I love the insights into Fairlight’s mind, getting to see what makes her who she is. We see her fears, doubts, and all the questions she has. She battles with not only outside influence, but a war inside against what you’re taught to believe vs. what you actually believe. The relationship between Bob and Fairlight is beautiful even in these early stages. It likes their souls yearned for each other before they even met, like an invisible string tying them together. We’d be here forever if I had to list all the reasons I love this story, so I’ll leave it here, but you’re missing out if you have not yet checked it out.

➛ World-building. Leah adds details and plot points that make this world feel vivid and alive–it's like watching a movie.

➛ Reverend Bob Floyd. That's it. That's the reason.

➛ If you like an angsty fic with a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, this one's for you. It's not an easy balance to create, but Leah does it effortlessly.

What’s even sicker is I saw articles and discussions on Reddit while he was actively missing that he was ‘on the run’ bec DV claims that had no merit. The fact that the police investigating have history of being anti indigenous just makes it all even worse. Just disgusting and absolutely horrific. Rest in peace Cole 💔☹️

Fuck that. It’s disgusting how fast narratives travel. And it doesn’t make sense. All these conflicting stories just take away from the crime of it all.

I wish I could say I’m surprised.. the police really do have a history of dropping the ball, and it’s only because of his career we even knew this happened. How many more Coles have been victims to these crimes the past few years that we don’t know of? May he rest easy 💔
