Matt Gertz at MMFA:
Fox News depicts the “decision desk” that calls elections for the network as an independent, data-driven body cordoned off from its right-wing propaganda machine. But the 2020 presidential election showed that this independence is a fiction: Top Fox executives are willing and able to overrule those calls if they think the results would anger Donald Trump and Fox viewers.   With the entire right-wing apparatus — including Fox figures — framing any potential Trump loss in November as a result of fraud, that scenario could easily repeat this fall.
The New York Times interviewed Fox decision desk overseer Arnon Mishkin for a Wednesday article on how outlets are “preparing to make calls in a very tight race — and ensure that viewers and readers believe them.” Mishkin said “that he and his team would be siloed off in a room inside network headquarters, and that he had no concerns about outside interference.”
“One hundred percent of the job is to look at the numbers,” Mishkin told the Times. “Just look at the numbers and report out what the numbers are saying.” But the 2020 election showed that between Mishkin’s team reporting “what the numbers are saying” and Fox anchors presenting that information to the public, the network’s executives can step in to overrule the calls.
Fox’s election night call of Arizona for Joe Biden was controversial, the Times noted, angering Trump and ultimately triggering the exits of decision desk leaders Chris Stirewalt and Bill Sammon. As Fox viewers revolted following that call, the network went into overdrive pushing Trumpian lies about election fraud swinging the results — which its executives and stars didn’t actually believe — and eventually triggering a massive defamation settlement with Dominion Voting Systems. But the Times stressed that Fox refused to bow to Trump campaign demands that the network rescind its Arizona call, while leaving out the network’s subsequent decision — pushed by its top executives and “straight news” anchors — to slow-walk future calls if they might similarly anger viewers.
Fox president and executive editor Jay Wallace “overruled the Decision Desk team including Bill Sammon, Arnon Mishkin, and Chris Stirewalt, refusing to let them call Nevada for Biden even after other networks did, a level of interference that had been unheard of in past elections,” Peter Baker and Susan Glasser reported in their 2022 book, The Divider.  Wallace’s reason for overruling Mishkin and company had nothing to do with “the numbers,” according to Baker and Glasser. “Because of the Arizona projection, calling Nevada would give Biden enough electoral votes for victory,” they wrote. “Wallace did not want Fox to be the first to call the election and declare Biden president-elect.” Fox CEO Suzanne Scott had wanted to go even further, Baker and Glasser reported, suggesting the morning after the election “that Fox should not call any more states until they were officially certified,” an unheard-of process that could take weeks. Fox “straight news” anchors Martha MacCallum and especially Bret Baier emerged in post-election reporting as key figures who sought to stymie the decision desk’s calls.
GOP propaganda organ Fox “News” doesn’t have an independent decision desk free of interference, as Fox decision desk head Arnon Mishkin admitted that he and his team would be siloed off.
In 2020, after the channel’s decision desk made a controversial call to put Arizona in Joe Biden’s column, executives put a stop to calling any further states just so Fox couldn’t be the first to put Biden over 270 with a call of Nevada and that any future calls be based on viewer support.

Visual Diary #20
Tumblr media
Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. The beginnings of oil painting can be traced back to the 7th century CE, as revealed in a discovery made in 2008. During this time, unknown artists utilised oil, possibly derived from walnuts or poppies, to decorate the ancient cave complex in Bamiyan, Afghanistan.
The above artwork was painted by Susan Hale. What makes her artwork unique and stand out is she always uses bright colours, expressive brushwork, and dynamic compositions. She frequently paints natural landscapes and seascapes, capturing the natural world's beauty and dynamism. The use of light and shadow in her art provides depth and atmosphere, encouraging viewers to become engrossed by the scenes she portrays. Her paintings are vibrant and vivid in general, exhibiting her own style and creativity.
The spherical shape of the pumpkin were formed using light orange ribbing which are buried deep in ribbons of grass and leaves. Crops with wavy rows draw our attention to the background of the painting, which is a rural agricultural scene with several barns and a silo that add to its rustic appeal.

I've thought about this a lot but haven't posted any artwork for it. I feel Karbunkle from Biker Mice from Mars deserves a good redesign. There are many reasons for it, so I'll give a few here; 1. While Karbunkle's design is perfectly fine as a stock mad scientist, his actual character is not a stock mad scientist. He does what he does less for science and more because it gives him a paycheck. If someone were to offer him a better deal, he'd leave Limburger in a heartbeat. In fact, in every three-parter episode, he DOES. 2. Related to the above, Karbunkle is not some weirdo hired from the gutter. He has a long history of being the head scientist for successful Plutarkian invasions. He used to have a lot of clout and still is so skilled that no one on Mars or Earth can replicate his creations. Even though he now grumbles under Limburger's failed invasion, he is still offered jobs from other factions. 3. Karbunkle being vaguely human would be fine if it was ever actually used. But aside from one joke in the 2006 show, it just isn't relevant to his character at all. So my redesign focuses on these three factors. First off, he is now visibly non-human. His core shapes stay the same, but he has a dorsal mane, fluffy ears, and fangs.
Second, though not visible here, he dresses sharply and holds himself high. Karbunkle is someone with a high position and despite falling on hard times he still keeps his pride. He will still suck up to Limburger, of course. Also not seen here either, but he has a mechanical tail to use as an additional limb. Since Karbunkle's best work are his mechanical creations, I feel he should make use of them as well. Whether he originally had a tail or not, no one knows. His VA should still be Susan Silo and he will still wear heels. I don't want to overhaul him entirely, just make him feel more cohesive.

New Ragon Institute building opens in the heart of Kendall Square

New Ragon Institute building opens in the heart of Kendall Square
Tumblr media
Leaders from MIT, Harvard University, and Mass General Brigham gathered Monday to celebrate an important new chapter in the Ragon Institute’s quest to harness the immune system to prevent and cure human diseases.
The ceremony marked the opening of the new building for the Ragon Institute of Mass General, MIT, and Harvard, located at 600 Main Street in the heart of Cambridge’s Kendall Square, where its multidisciplinary group of researchers will expand on the collaborations that have proven impactful since the Institute’s founding in 2009.
“Fifteen years ago, the Ragon Institute started with transformative philanthropy from Terry and Susan Ragon,” Ragon Institute Director and MIT professor of the practice Bruce Walker said. “Initially, it was an experiment: Could we bring together scientists, engineers, and medical doctors to pool their creative knowledge and cross-disciplinary specialties to make advances against the greatest global health problems of our time? Now, 15 years later, here we are celebrating the success of that experiment and welcoming the next phase of the Ragon Institute.”
The institute’s new building features five floors of cutting-edge, dedicated lab space and more than double the floor area of the previous facilities. The open, centralized layout of the new building is designed to empower cross-disciplinary research and enable discoveries that will lead to new ways to prevent, detect, and cure diseases. The expanded space will also allow the Ragon Institute to bring in more scientists, researchers, biologists, clinicians, postdocs, and operational staff.
“Cross-disciplinary collaboration is a hallmark of the Ragon Institute, and that is really how you do transformational research and breakthrough science at scale — what everyone talks about but few actually achieve,” said Mass General Brigham President and CEO Anne Klibanski. “Partnerships between health care and academia accelerate these breakthroughs and foster innovation. That is the model of scientific discovery this whole area represents, that Boston and Massachusetts represent, and that this institute represents.”
In addition to state-of-the-art lab space, a third of the new building is open for public use. The Ragon Institute’s leaders expressed a commitment to engaging with the local Cambridge community and believe the institute’s success will further strengthen Kendall Square’s innovation ecosystem.
“As a relative newcomer, I see this elegant new building as an inspiring vote of confidence in the future of Kendall Square,” MIT President Sally Kornbluth said. “I gather that over a few decades, thanks in part to many of you here today, Kendall Square was transformed from a declining postindustrial district to the center of a region that is arguably the biotech capital of the world. I believe we now have an opportunity to secure its future, to make sure Kendall Square becomes an infinitely self-renewing source of biomedical progress, a limitless creative pool perpetually refreshed by a stream of new ideas from every corner of the life sciences and engineering to unlock solutions to the most important problems of our time. This building and this institute embody that vision.”
The Ragon Institute is a collaborative effort of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard. It was founded in 2009 through support from the Phillip T. and Susan M. Ragon Foundation with the initial goal of developing an HIV vaccine. Since then, it has expanded to focus on other global health initiatives — from playing a vital role in Covid-19 vaccine development to exploring the rising health challenges of climate change and preparing for the next pandemic.
The institute strives to break down siloes between scientists, engineers, and clinicians from diverse disciplines to apply all available knowledge to the fight against diseases of global importance.
During the ceremony, Phillip (Terry) Ragon ’72 discussed the origins of the Institute and his vision for accelerating scientific discovery.
“With Bruce [Walker], I began to see how philanthropy could really make a difference and how we could power a different model that we thought could be particularly effective,” Ragon said. “The fundamental idea was to take an approach like the Manhattan Project, bringing the best and brightest people together from different disciplines, with flexible funding, and leave them to be successful. And so here we are today.”
Ragon Institute faculty are engaged in challenges as varied as developing vaccines for tuberculosis and HIV, cures for malaria, treatments for neuroimmunological diseases, a universal flu vaccine, and therapies for cancer and autoimmune disorders — with the potential to impact billions of lives.
The new building’s opening followed additional funding from Terry and Susan Ragon, which came in recognition of the Ragon Institute’s expanding mission.
“[Through this partnership], we’ve accomplished more than we realized we could, and that’s shown in the scientific progress that the Ragon Institute has achieved,” said Harvard University interim president Alan Garber. “To pull this off requires not only scientific brilliance, but true leadership.”
Walker, the Institute’s founding director, has spent his entire career caring for people living with HIV and studying how the body fights back. He has helped establish two cutting-edge research institutes in Africa, which continue to train the next generation of African scientists. The international reach of the Ragon Institute is another aspect that sets it apart in its mission to impact human health.
“Today we launch the next 100 years of the Ragon Institute, and we’re fortunate to work every day on this enormously challenging and consistently inspiring mission,” Walker said. “We’re motivated by the belief that every day matters, that our efforts will ultimately alleviate suffering, that our mission is urgent, and that together, we will succeed.”
