"LOST" Retrospect: "The Wrong Promise"
Following a re-watch of the "LOST" series finale, (6.17-6.18) "The End", I did this re-write of an old article about a scene between Kate Austen and Claire Littleton:
"LOST" RETROSPECT: "THE WRONG PROMISE"
While going over old "LOST" articles and forums, I had come across a post that asked members how they would have ended the series. After reading several other sites and articles, I had my answer. There were two things I would have changed. I would have included two other original characters in that final scene inside the afterlife church. And I would have removed one line from the transcript for the series finale, (6.17-6.18) "The End".
But I am here to discuss the second change. I wish that showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse had not allowed Kate Austen to promise Claire Littleton that she would help raise the latter’s three-year-old son Aaron after reaching civilization. Following the demise of the Man in Black aka the Smoke Monster, Kate and fellow castaway James "Sawyer" Ford made their escape from the island, while the latter was crumbling. Dr. Jack Shephard and Desmond Hume had unplugged the island's electromagnetic energy in order to make the Smoke Monster mortal. Kate and Sawyer used Desmond's boat Elizabeth to travel to the nearby Hydra Island, where the patched up Ajira 316 plane awaited them. Near the shore of Hydra Island, Kate and Sawyer found Claire, distraught over being abandoned again. Kate convinced Claire to follow her and all three made it aboard the Ajira plane. During the flight away from the island, Claire had expressed her fear of being a bad mother to her son Aaron, whom she had not seen in three years. To reassure Claire, Kate promised to help the former raise her three year-old son. And here is where Lindelof and Cuse made their mistake.
Now, I realize that Kate was simply trying to assure an agitated Claire that everything would be all right, once the latter was reunited with Aaron. Especially since Claire had been stuck on the island for three years and had not seen her son. Yet, a part of me suspected there was more at play. Because as far as I am concerned, Kate’s promise to help raise Aaron struck me as the wrong one to make. Why? It was not possible for her to meet this promise.
In the Season Four episode (4.04) "Eggtown", Kate's attorney had made a deal with prosecutors to allow her to take a probation deal, instead of face more trials over other crimes like insurance fraud and bank robbery. He used Kate's reputation as one of the Oceanic Six - one of the few Oceanic survivors who managed to return to their respective countries back in January 2005 - as a reason they would find it difficult to convict her. Personally, I found this argument ridiculous, but Cuse and Lindelof allowed it to stick. The probation forced Kate to remain in the United States and California for at least ten years. When she had departed Los Angeles on the Ajira Flight 316 in Season Five's (5.06) "316", Kate had broken the terms of her ten-year probation after two years.
According to the show’s canon, the period between "316" and "The End" spanned roughly two weeks. Chances are, Kate had left the country under an assumed name. And since Ajira 316 had been missing for two weeks, I suspect a great deal of publicity would have generated from the plane's return to civilization. I would not be surprised if not long after her return to civilization or U.S. territory - the plane was originally destined for Guam Island, Kate ended up in prison for breaking her probation. And once the authorities also learned she had lied about being Aaron's biological mother, there is a chance they would have prosecuted her for the New Mexico bank robbery and other crimes. Worse, Kate's mother - if she was still alive - might consider testifying against Kate over Wayne Janssen's murder. After all, Kate had never been cleared or convicted for that crime.
Even if Kate had simply decided to follow Claire to Australia, I do not see the chances of her playing a future role in Aaron's life. One might consider the possibility of Kate moving to Australia after serving time in prison for breaking her probation. That is another possibility I do not see happening. Why do I have doubts about both possibilities? I doubt very much that the Australian government would have allowed Kate to re-enter the country. Before Oceanic 815 had departed Sydney, Australia; Kate had entered the country under a false name and as a fugitive from the law. Which means she had entered Australia illegally. I just cannot see the Australian immigration authorities allowing her to set foot on the country's soil again.
Also, why would Claire need Kate’s help in raising Aaron? Kate had left the three year-old in custody of his biological grandmother, Carole Littleton, less than a day before leaving the United States. Ms. Littleton had custody of Aaron by the end of the series. And to be honest, I believe she would be the best person to serve as Aaron’s guardian, considering the tenuous nature of Claire’s mental state in the series finale. I certainly cannot see Ms. Littleton allowing Kate, a criminal who had deliberately kept her grandson away from her for nearly three years, near Aaron while he remained a minor. In fact, I do not even see Claire allowing Kate to be anywhere near Aaron. Hell, I would never allow a child abductor with a series of crimes hovering around her, near my offspring again . . . even if that person had helped me get off the island.
All I can say is . . . what were Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof thinking when they had allowed Kate to make that promise to Claire in "The End"? They could have found another way for Kate to ease the young Australian woman’s fears other than with a promise she had very little chance of fulfilling. And for the past thirteen years, many "LOST" fans have automatically believed that Kate had helped Claire raise Aaron. Without Carole Littleton’s help. Now that I think about it . . . what were they thinking?

Review: Embassytown by China Miéville
Embassytown by China Miéville My rating: 5 of 5 stars My friend recommended this book. Thanks, Kay! Libby had this book in the Kindle version, so I picked it up. And though it was text-to-speech enabled, there are many reasons the Audible version is so much better. Susan Duerden (Narrator), for one. Her voice and acting skills made the story come to life. I went ahead and picked up the Audible to…

Kate and Aaron
The more I think about Kate Austen on “LOST” and her “custody” of Aaron Littleton, the more I feel disgusted to my core. She was basically a child kidnapper who had actually used an innocent baby as her personal comfort blanket and kept him away from his grandmother Carole Littleton for nearly three years. Fellow castaway and Oceanic Six survivor Jack Shephard had allowed himself to be so easily manipulated into accepting her lie. And the other members of the Oceanic Six, along with Desmond Hume, Penny Widmore and Frank Lapidus didn't say a goddamn thing. This is probably one of the worst crimes I have seen committed on "LOST" and so many fans saw nothing wrong with what they did. I find that even more disgusting.

tallsaint replied to your post “im like so fucking obsessed with audiobooks that i cannot for the LIFE...”
I loooove really long audiobooks do you have any recs for good ones that are 15/20+ hrs long?
oh do i ?????
i think the longest one ive listened to is about 24/25 hrs and its warbreaker by brandon sanderson (would rec the audiobook, but if u dont wanna dish out ur money brandon sanderson actually has warbreaker as a free pdf on his website right here (and if u doubly dont wanna dish out ur money but u still wanna listen to it pm me and i’ll get u the link where i listened to it) narrated by james yaegashi, who if i recall correctly is a very big celeb with audiobook fanatics
the one that i read most recently which was either just under 15 hrs or just 15 hrs was the binding by bridget collins read by carl prekopp and my friend kat can attest to this but i am absolutely head over heels in love with this narrator, he usually does audio dramas and plays and you can tell in the way he manipulates his voice. also ! big bonus, sheffield accent for a country boy! absolutely LOVE when narrators have specific accents or ways they speak
also the rook by daniel o’malley, read by susan duerden, pretty good book, liked the narrating alright, honestly this is a bit of a meh for me cause theres parts i really like a lot and then didnt like a lot of the other things but def worth a try!
then mandatory magicians mention, all three books are around 16 hours, highly recommend mark bramhalls narrating although at one point he does an australian accent and if you have an ear for that sort of this ive read that he doesnt do it very well, also, he pronounces words like white like hwite, bob ross style, so you see whether u find it endearing or annoying! books written by lev grossman (also u can find these on youtube so yay free books)
skyward by brandon sanderson, read by suzy jackson, 15 hrs, FANTASTIC narration, the kind where it doesn’t jump out at you how good the narrating is until you have to go back to something else, really i couldn’t reccomend this enough especially since a problem i have often with ya is that the narrating just isn’t good enough in my opinion, and i love this one cause its a good ya book with narrating where u can hear that the narrator is putting emotion into what she’s saying, LOVE this book!
the night circus by erin morgenstern is 13 hours and 40 minutes BUT its narrated by jim dale so rly im doing u a favour mentioning it even tho its not what u wanted :////// jdhfgj yeah no listen to this its very great
Oh also just remembered six of crows the audible full cast production I think that's like 20 hrs but I could be very wrong
#tallsaint#replies#honorable mentions of books that i havent listened to but am sure are great and def long enough: mistborn trilogy by brandon sanderson#im on a bit of a sanderson kick lately#(actually also this isnt a book but its an auditory story and its very long but if u havent listened to the adventure zone yet.. go for it)

End of year asks - @c-l-ford asked for TV show of the year and best book I read. So, y’know, nothing too difficult XD
Book - this was the year I started listening to audiobooks in earnest. I listen to them while falling asleep, or waiting for pain meds to kick in - but also while crafting. So most of what springs to mind are books that are not only good, but have good audio recordings. I think I’m going to go with Embassytown by China Miéville, read by Susan Duerden. The book is fascinating and amazing, and the way they use the audio recording to reproduce Language is incredible.
Honorable mentions go to: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (difficult, but important in a quiet way I haven’t parsed yet), The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (chilling - that epilogue!!!), and American Gods by Neil Gaiman (I am baffled by how well he manages to capture the feeling of each place - especially as I’ve lived in/near many of them). Also the audio recordings of the Temeraire books by Naomi Novik, read by Simon Vance, who does an excellent job with Temeraire’s voice.
TV Show - This one is actually harder, I think, because while I have seen lots of good TV this year, I don’t tend to have the same visceral connection to shows that I do to books or movies. I will say the TV adaptations of The Handmaid’s Tale and American Gods are both fantastic - true to the spirit of the books, while adding more content to flesh out the stories even further. Can’t way for season 2 of each! Also, The Good Place. Season 2 is not *quite* as amazing as S1, but still brilliant. Bonus points for allowing me to say “fork” in front of my students, which much more closely emulates the feeling of “fuck” than the more common alternatives.
(Also a special shout-out to Babylon 5, which I have been re-watching with friends. Always brilliant, now with the added bonus of seeing @savitrioflight‘s reactions.)

“LOST”: “The Wrong Promise”
“LOST”: “THE WRONG PROMISE”
While going over old "LOST" articles and forums, I had come across a post that asked members how they would have ended "LOST". After reading several other sites and articles about the series, I had posted my answer.
There was one thing that I wish showrunners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof had not added into the script for the series finale, (6.17)"The End". I wish they had not allowed Kate Austen to promise Claire Littleton that she would help raise the latter's three-year-old son Aaron after reaching civilization, while the pair was making their departure with a handful of other survivors aboard the patched-up Ajira 316.

Had a wonderful time @youngactorsapa performing in a #musicaltheatre production. I learned so much about #livetheater #performances #Studyinglines and practicing #singing and #dancing. So much different than #filmproductions. Performing in front of a #liveaudience is so...Wow! Thank you to my teacher and coach actress Susan Duerden for the opportunity and for showing me a different side of acting. Sorry for the delay! In my version, Alan Cumming is reading Jack Seward and Tim Curry is reading for Van Helsing. I’m quite enjoying it so far - Susan Duerden is reading for Lucy, and in the letter describing the three proposals, she has to do Lucy’s version of Quincey’s voice, which for as earnest as she’s being was still pretty hysterical. I haven’t gotten to Van Helsing’s entrance yet, so I can’t comment on Curry but my hopes are pretty high. Cumming is doing pretty well so far though!
The version I was eyeing jealously has (and I might be revealing too much about myself here) Tom Hiddleston, but I’m not certain what role he’s reading for. I just enjoy him as an actor, and I was curious to see what he’d bring to any of the parts.
How are you enjoying/did you enjoy your version with Nick Sandys? Is he narrating overall, or do they have different readers in that one too?
I already have one audiobook of Dracula, but I’m sincerely considering spending my one credit on a second version bc it has my favorite actor narrating, even though I have no idea what part he’s reading for, bc I will do anything for 1) a great telling of this book, but especially 2) That Voice.
I don’t know what this says about me as a person.

" I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers." January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb…. As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society's members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever. Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.
