Love in Antiquity
To coincide with Valentine's Day, who's better to represent this holiday than the Roman goddess of love and sex? This is the 1930 edition of William Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis, published in New York by The Dial Press and in Toronto by Longmans Green & Company, with illustrations by Ukrainian-American artist and book illustrator Ben Kutcher (1895-1967). The narrative poem Metamorphoses, by the Latin poet Ovid (43BC-17/18AD), served as Shakespeare's inspiration for his own poem. In Ovid's work, Venus is a central figure, often depicted as a powerful and passionate deity. This influence can be seen in Shakespeare's portrayal of Venus.
In Shakespeare's work, the character of Venus is rendered as a sensuous and uninhibited woman who desires the beautiful mortal Adonis. She is described as being focused on making love to him, using explicit language to express her yearning. This choice of language is significant as it reflects the strength of Venus' emotions and challenges the societal norms of the time. Kutcher's illustrations bring the poem to life, capturing the raw passion and intensity of Venus's desire for Adonis in a way that complements Shakespeare's vivid language.
William Shakespeare dedicated this poem to Henry Wriothesley (1573-1624), the third earl of Southampton, the sole person to whom Shakespeare ever dedicated any of his work. He was both a friend and patron of Shakespeare, believed by some scholars to be the same person referred to as the "fair youth" in Shakespeare's sonnets.

Lately I am in such an incredibly back and forth flux of
I am so under valued and unappreciated
And
LOL you and your art/designs aren’t special or even good get real. Absolutely 0 companies are noticing you let alone want you.
Had a genuinely lovely day collaborating with the rest of the fine art team- my people through and through. If this was work all the time, I wouldn’t dream of leaving. But it’s not. It’s once in a blue moon.
I’m not even sure I should leave. I got it in my head that I want to. But do I really want to upend the steadfast security of this job? A place where my peers know and respect me? Nobody questions me but higher ups ignore my attempts to change things that need changing.
Though to be real, the county over is at a budget deficit and attempting to furlough teachers. So. That’s no fun.
I’m really good at this job- why do they have to keep making it harder and more stressful despite me pointing out ways to NOT DO THAT
For me OR the kids for fucks sake!
Everyone at my school is teaching way more courses than is historically normal and I just feel like this is the beginning of a slippery slope
But it’s also a slope I’m familiar with, at least?
It’s extremely hard to fire me, ten years in with tenure and a good reputation. But how much more bullshit is going to be shoved our way? I have two kids with major medical concerns this round and god knows that’ll be great for what is likely CPTSD from mom being chronically and unstably ill all of my life.
Ahhhhh?????????!!!!!

What music do you like?
Kind of a mix of stuff, I like genre mixes so it's hard to pin down exactly. I like stuff with added classical instruments or real synthesizer in it.
The most consistent group I've listened to since I was a teenager is world/inferno friendship society which can KINDA be defined as dark cabaret, but it's more of a loosely defined anarchist music collective. (Though they're probably done after Jack Terricloth passed away in 2021)
Otherwise there's some Ska (Aquabats and Reel Big Fish mostly) some Electronic music (fartbarf, look mum no computer) a little bit of rap in there (godforbid) and a lot of stuff that's harder to define (ludo, bear ghost, golgol bordello, Amanda palmer, mad caddies, electric six, Voltaire)
I kinda go for beat and vibes rather than genre. My two main playlists are kind of a train wreck genre-wise.
