i bet rn Willie and Alex are having a full weekend date on different parts of Australia. They're going to the art museums in Melbourne, Sydney and Hobard, so Willie can skate and shout somewhere new, they also will be doing some animal observation bc Alex doesn't believe Tasmanian Devils are real but he's interested on the spiders and the snakes and Willie wants to see a kangaroo. They'll be hitting the beach, Willie claiming they're ghosts and can't get wet or sunburned so he can drag Alex into surfing. No doubt Alex will be looking for their music scene at least once. they'll do some shop(lift) as well bc Willie wants to refill his wardrobe and Alex will get some knickknacks for his friends.
and yeah sounds like a lot to do in just three days but transportation won't be a problem for them.

Things I Want in Sims 4 2024
More sporty activities - I want my sims to have more fun things to do! I'm talking skateboarding (we already have skating rinks and snowboarding, surely skateboarding isn't that far behind), surfing, volleyball. I think these things would fit in well with a pack that has a world based on Australia with the beaches and some skateparks and stuff
More afterschool activities for kids and teens - High School Years brought us the chess club, football, cheerleaders, computer club, as well as the simfluencer and streamer careers for teens to do after school. I wanna see things like ballet classes or instrument classes with new musical instruments like saxophones, clarinets, drums, flutes, even cellos and double basses. And perhaps even an orchestra/school band afterschool activity to reflect on the new instruments??
More stuff for infants and toddlers - I feel like this one is so obvious. I want more toys or activities for infants and toddlers! What about those little wooden rings that you put on a stick in a tower? You could have super cute designs for them like a rabbit that goes at the top (we sell them at the place I work and they're so adorable). And what about things like one of those little chef kitchens toddlers and young kids can play with? That would be a great way to raise creativity. And those little cars they can "drive" around in by using their feet to push them along? That would be awesome for increasing their movement skill! And also. I WANT TODDLERS TO BE ABLE TO DRAW!! Give them their own drawing table or even have them do drawings on the floor or the walls
Fairies - Listen, I know the last game pack was an occult pack. But I think we need fairies in the game now. EnglishSimmer talked about it in depth in a recent video for things she wants for 2024 and I agree that having fairies and a fairy court system and fun little spells like turning sims into frogs would be amazing. It could even, I think, perhaps fit well with a medieval or fantasy themes pack. And then that in turn would also fit well with the castle building kit we're getting this year. Not to mention it could build upon the occult lore for spellcasters we got with the werewolves pack! And perhaps they also could use the lunar cycle function we have in game too like werewolves!

okay okay im putting my oc rant to ash on here
these are summaries of my main characters in the wallflowers
its this small town au right. set in australia. basically a bunch of one shots set in the same universe. theres this main group of five characters. uhhh lets start with ollie. hes a classic trans guy, his middle name is jude so his group of friends call him oj or orange juice. he surfs so whenever he gets out of the water he has the cutest hair (it's platinum blonde and curly ish) and also he's in a band with some of his other friends (not the main characters) as the drummer. his music taste is like cavetown and all time low and waterparks and he has joint issues and is also autistic
next is park. they have a crush on ollie and vice versa and theyre so obliviously in love with each other. park is short for parker but no one of his friends really calls them that. they're non binary and love basketball and coding/robotics and also making short films. theyre depressed and also have dyscalculia. they moved to the town at age five from the philippines and and since they couldnt communicate well no one really talked to them until ollie did. park listens to anson seabra conan gray lauv alec benjamin
okay up next is leo. short for leonardo but none of his friends call him that. his five siblings call him angel cause his middle name is angelo. he's aroace and in one of the one shots he establishes a qpr with les (who you'll hear about next) who he's known his whole live and lives next door to and they have a treehouse in the park down the street thats just theirs to hang out in. he's a soccer player and loves woodworking and painting. he's dyslexic and bipolar and a massive marvel fan. leo likes ajr why dont we and top mainly
now, les. which is short for lesley. they are a genderfluid icon, especially with her outfits. he listens to girl in red, the neighbourhood, arctic monkeys, halsey. while theyre in a qpr with leo, they also have a crush on ella (next up and final). she knows a little french cause she's mauritian and her maman is teaching her it (her parents are wlw btw). she has two younger brothers who can be annoying but he loves them. he also plays soccer like leo, as well as trombone and he's in a jazz band, and finally ice hockey which is why he's at the ice rink with anna so much. they have adhd and anxiety and yeah
finally, ella. which is short for anneliese (which ik is weird). she has a bunch of nicknames that im not bothered to list. if you didn't know her you'd think she was straight but in fact she's a raging lesbian who 1. is oblivious to the fact that les has a crush on her and 2. has a massive crush on another girl who also figure skates at her rink. so yeah, she figure skates, and is also on student council and does photography so she and park work close together sometimes. her mum died of cancer so she lives with her dad and older sister and moved to their town when she was like 10. she has ocd and anorexia and listens to taylor swift and one direction mainly

How Surf Proud is creating a safe queer space

How Surf Proud is creating a safe queer space
Tumblr media
The founder of Surf Proud Sarah Pawley shares why she set up the group and how it’s forming a strong queer community on the Sunshine Coast.
I started Surf Proud on the Sunshine Coast two years back just to have a safe spot for people who surf to hang out and catch some waves together.
I am a surf coach and I wanted a crew to share the stoke with.
My vision was to create a safe and exhilarating space where the LGBTQIA+ community and allies could come together, ride the waves, and embrace the beauty of the ocean while fostering meaningful relationships.
It’s like my baby, backed by my partner and this awesome crew of friends who are all about supporting my wild ideas.
Their hype keeps pushing me to break some boundaries and spread good vibes on a bigger scale. It’s a purposeful journey while having an all-round good time.
I wanted Surf Proud to be the support that I wished for back when I was a young surfer.

The aim was to create a vibe where everyone feels comfy, confident, and totally real, breaking free from traditional moulds.
Since starting it out though, it’s become more than I thought!
Now, as a group, we’re on a mission to shake up the surf culture, celebrating diversity in the crew.
What Surf Proud offers
Surf Proud is all about chill vibes, welcoming everyone to beach socials and fun events.
Our crew is super diverse – not just surfers, but people from all walks of life. It’s just a laid-back community where everyone’s welcome to ride the wave or not & have a good time.
We offer a variety of fun activities. From beach socials featuring games and educational ocean safety talks to trivia sessions with exciting prizes.
We aim to create a dynamic and inclusive environment.

Additionally, we offer surf lessons, and when the elements aren’t in our favour, we turn to the park for lawn games and provide surf skate lessons.
We invite everyone who wants to get involved or just kick back and have a yarn.
Lots of crew join without knowing how to surf, just wanting to hang out with like-minded people.
Sure, surfing is part of it, but the real deal is the awesome connections we make – that’s what makes our community!
We have soul surfers to toe dippers, and if you by chance want to learn the art of surfing, we have the skills and experience to help you in a safe space.

Research: Successful Surf Brands
After researching skincare brands and Gen Z themself, I wanted to do some research on existing successful surf brands to get an understanding of what ones were popular and why. "Surf brands play a big part in the beach lifestyle, influencing the identity, spirit, and passion of wave riders worldwide. From the early days when pioneers carved out the first wooden boards to the contemporary era with its high-tech gear, these brands have been at the forefront, guiding and reflecting the evolution of surf culture." (Matt, 2023) I'm going to study the top three to study in depth as I want to do focused research on only a few brands.
Hurley - "Hurley isn’t just a surf brand, it’s a lifestyle brand that seamlessly blends the worlds of music, art, and surfing". Hurley started with surfboards but has evolved into an apparel brand. They keep real surfers in mind and value flexibility and comfort, making sure they cover all needs from in the water to relaxing on the beach, their brand message being "ROOTED IN BEACH CULTURE AND BUILT AROUND OUR VALUES OF POSITIVITY AND INCLUSION, HURLEY CELEBRATES SELF EXPRESSION FROM THE SKATE PARK TO THE CANVAS.
WE BELIEVE THAT MUSIC AND ART ARE THE COMMON THREADS THAT BRING US ALL TOGETHER, AND THAT OUR ENERGY AND INSPIRATION SHOULD ALWAYS COME FROM THE NEXT GENERATION.
WELCOME TO OUR WORLD. IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES" (Hurley, n.d.).
Hurley has managed to promote itself well through supporting worldwide surf events across all levels showing they know who their audience is and want to connect with them directly. They've also built a strong community through their Surf Club where they have particular surf clubs across the world. They also sponsor various professional surfers from Carissa Moore to Kai Lenny helping showcase their brand and popularity to consumers and fans of these surfers. Their current branding across their website plays on vintage design and photography encapsulating that they are a well established brand and have existed for many years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Hurley, n.d.)
Billabong - "Billabong isn’t just a brand, it’s an integral part of the surf community. They’ve supported countless surf events, athletes, and initiatives, helping shape the narrative of the surf world" (Matt, 2023). Established in 1970, Billabong has built an iconic name for itself, focusing on providing quality and innovation, offering products inspired by the best surfers, "creating a direct bridge between the athletes and the fans". Again they also sponser professional surfers which include Sky Brown and Seth Moniz.
Billabong actively pushes for a greener future through the production of their own eco-friendly products and line through their "Hello, Tomorrow" movement. The products are made from eco-conscious materials such as 100% responsibly harvested cotton to recycled yarns. They also parter with organisations that help protect the ocean like SeaTrees who "is a program of the 501c3 non-profit Sustainable Surf that plants, protects, and restores blue carbon coastal ecosystems around the world to reverse climate change". (SeaTrees, 2023)
The branding again plays on nostalgia and a vintage look, alog with fun and bright colours and patterns (referencing 80's graphic design) and warm, saturated surf and lifestyle photography. Their iconic wave logo is easily recognisable creating a strong brand identity: "FIVE DECADES OF THE FEELING. AS MOST SURFERS KNOW, “THE FEELING” IS BETTER SHOWN THAN EXPLAINED. WHICH IS WHY OUR FOUNDER GORDON MERCHANT ORIGINALLY CREATED THE “WAVE ICON” TO SHOW THE BRAND IN PERPETUAL MOTION.
IT’S BEEN INTERPRETED AND REIMAGINED MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS, BUT ONE THING REMAINS CONSTANT: THE FEELING IS FOREVER" (Billabong, n.d.).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Billabong, n.d.)
Rip Curl - "Rip Curl’s origins date back to 1969 in Torquay, Australia. Their tagline, “The Ultimate Surfing Company,” perfectly encapsulates their commitment to the sport" (Matt, 2023). They offer a range of high-quality products from hoodies to wetsuits covering all surfers needs. They're also actively involved in the surfing community through supporting surf camps and global competitions. "Their engagement ensures that the brand remains fresh and relevant, even as they remain deeply connected to their roots". Again Rip Curl, as most surf brands do, have their own team which includes some of the biggest names in the surf world such as Kelly Slater ad Bethany Hamilton.
Similarly to Billabong, Rip Curl advocates for a better planet through it's own practises and have created Rip Curl Planet as a banner for their environmental initiatives. "Rip Curl Planet has three key pillars in which we are constantly looking to improve within;
Preserve and Protect Our Oceans
Environmental Products
Act Sustainably" (www.ripcurl.com, n.d.)
In order to do this, Rip Curl focuses on reducing waste, cutting back energy consumption and using recycled materials. They also offer a way to recycle your own wetsuits in France, Spain and Portugal by sending it to them in the post or taking to your nearest store, which is then used for things such as "soft fall matting for playgrounds".
Their visual identity has a lot of range, with varying logos over the years . They play on nostalgia similarly to Billabong's style for some campaigns yet also have a more modern style they use especially for promoting their collections.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(www.ripcurl.com, n.d.)
Tumblr media
(Editor at SurferToday.com, 2019)
After this research, I feel I have a good starting point to start creating informed design experimentations by using my research on Gen Z for what they want from designs and brands, in particular, and combining it with what these surf brands have done to create such success for themselves.

Hello my name is Josh Marks and Hardwood Tides is my alias for creating surf and ocean art. I live in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast in Australia. I grew up around sun, surfing and coastal culture. Always artistic and creative, I received my BA in Graphic Design in 2003 and have been working in the signage industry as a graphic designer and sign writer for over 17 years. I had always enjoyed woodworking from a young age and started Hardwood Tides in 2016 to explore this creativity. I create unique artworks combining my woodworking skills, resin and wood to mimic the beauty of nature and embrace surf culture. Each piece is handmade by me and therefore unique, no two pieces are the same. Respect for the materials and the environment is at the forefront of every creation, with all woods being sustainably sourced and treated with love, care and attention to detail. I'm fortunate enough to spread my creations around the world and I'm constantly collaborating with clients worldwide to create a piece that reflects their own love of the outdoors, the sea, surfing or skateboarding. Works are often most common and well-known in the form of surfboard artwork, but also include functional skate decks and home decor. I also create custom sculptural pieces for clients who want something completely unique. Please contact me if you would like to inquire about current items, a commissioned work, or just have a cool idea or need more information.
