@adellbridges on a Better Counterpose 💜 ・・・ Does this sound familiar? 👉 You’re doing your backbends, opening up and then you go for wheel pose. You take a break, hug your knees into your chest (because it feels so right!) and then go for another wheel pose . . But what happens while you’re curled up is you undo a lot of the opening you’ve done! In a practice with lots of backbends, if you want to go deeper and deeper, then instead of curling up in a ball or doing a forward fold, rest with a neutral spine . . Allow your spine to go back into its natural curvature but don’t flex it into the opposite shape you’re aiming for! . . My rest pose of choice is a #suptabaddhakonasana but you may choose to rest your knees together with the feet wide, or take a bridge pose, or just lay flat . . But RESIST THE URGE to curl up, because that just squeezes the intervertebral discs in the opposite way . . Once you’re finished with your backbending, then of course, take a nice forward fold! But not till you’re finished ☺️ . . ☝️ Bonus Tip!! Twists will help you throughout your backbending practice. Twist before to open up the thoracic spine, and twist after to neutralise the spine again . . 🦋 Seated Butterfly/Bound Angle Pose is one of my favorite stretches and is easy to take when sitting on the floor or even on a couch. It's amazing how much tension we can hold in our hips and Seated Butterfly helps it melt away 😌 Some variations to try: For a deep stretch, guide the thighs down with the forearms or elbows while being mindful of how the knees feel. Want to feel the pose differently? Widen the space between the hips and the feet by sliding the feet forward into a diamond shape. Want a gentler variation? Try sitting on a pillow or folded up blanket for some extra cushioning and assistance guiding the hips forward and down. You can also place blocks underneath the knees to allow them to rest. Yoga Break! Self-care! This was a few days ago, but I did this pose again today, without a photographer. Supported Supta Baddha Konasana is a hugely healing restorative pose. It brings lots of blood flow to the power center of the pelvis. Great for reproductive issues like pms, infertility, peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause, great for prostate health for men. I love open ing my heart and having the comfort, steadying weight of a few blankets on top of me. Pressure on the front of the body stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping soothe and balance out the fight or flight response. It’s really the perfect healing pose. You can do it with or without the bolster. This variation is a bit different than I teach it. Try it with the bolster or folded blankets supporting your whole spine. Or try a block under your bolster to elevate your head a bit. Close your eyes. Breathe. Therapeutic Reclined Bound Angle Pose, also known as Reclined Cobbler’s Pose, is a deeply relaxing yoga position that is recommended for students of all levels.
Its Sanskrit name — “Supta Baddha Konasana” comes from four words:
“Supta” — means “Reclining”
“Baddha” — means “Bound”
“Kona” — means “Angle”
“Asana” — means “Pose”
