For ten weeks I will make a post about a female artist that I like. This week: Charlotte Bernson @charlottebernson! During this crisis, I think Charlotte's art can inspire us to look at the world differently. ✨ For Charlotte, film is a tool to take the time to see the beauty of daily life. She believes that worldwide ‘problems’ portrayed in a lot of films are just as important as smaller and simpler things. “Flaking paint on old houses, nostalgic light, unknown people waving at you, short conversations on the telephone in times like these… It’s a sort of feeling or emotion that I want to express.” Charlotte experimented a lot and observes these moments with both fiction and documentaries. ...Because as early as eleven, I was a sexualized being to my big brother’s friends. 

....Because when I was stalked at twelve, I was told that I was crazy, and must be jealous of my then-ex boyfriend. 

....Because at thirteen, a boy on the bus choked me when he was mad. And the principal told me to submit to men or fear of retaliation. 

.....Because at fourteen, I broke a boy’s nose when he groped me at school. And then was told I shouldn’t brush off that attention, I should enjoy being pretty and desired. 

.....Because at sixteen I was thrown out of my best friend’s truck bed, in the school parking lot, over a disagreement. He was well involved in school, and I was a loner, so the complaint to the administration didn’t stick. 

....Because at seventeen, this same friend cornered me and used having me alone to his advantage. And because his parents threatened to wait until I was 18 to file legal actions against me if I pressed charges. 

.....Because this same year, my first-lover dumped me because I was ‘dirty’ and ‘not wife material anymore’. 

....Because at eighteen, my boyfriend’s best friend did the same thing, taking advantage while giving me a ride to dinner with my boyfriend. And because when I told my boyfriend, he said I shouldn’t have put myself into that situation. 

....Because at twenty, I slept with a knife by the bed, just in case I needed to use it on my fiance who liked to take advantage of me while I slept. 

....Because at twenty-two, I was tortured by a pastor who had to ‘drive the evil’ out of me to make me wife material. And because I was laughed at when I tried to press charges, since the police refused to believe a pastor could be that depraved. 

....Because at twenty-three, I was drugged at a party at my own house. And then was told I shouldn’t blame him for being too drunk and making a mistake. 

....Because I am a woman. And women should be quiet. Women should be submissive. Women should be modest. And women should never, ever say ‘no’ to a man.
