i think the character i hate the most is the teacher in daytime shooting star... never in my life have i been more annoyed by some pixels and their respective author. unfortunately i have read several works depicting teacher/student relations, but never had i seen one where the teacher is such a childish person that it totally made sense for him to be pursuing a 15 year old, i mean it takes a child to date one. we as readers were supposed to be rooting for him and support him when he fought with his friend for wanting to date his niece and that no one understood him for that or when he was battling against the other 16 year old love interest in the most stupidest way. one of the main points of the story was how the mc grew and decided not to be with him because he was also toying with her feelings in such a selfish way we could have mistaken him for a teenager with no previous relationship experience, but we were still supposed to be rooting for him. and i hate mika yamamori just because i hate him and also for tsubaki-chou lonely planet what do you have with grown men dating teenagers

International Women’s Day - Pay Attention to the Magademy Award Female Nominees

I haven’t really talked about this, but last year, a Japanese digital bookstore called BookLive started a cool yearly awards event held in March called the Magademy Awards. They nominate a good number of noteworthy male and female manga characters in leading and supporting roles from a wide variety of series.

For International Women’s Day today, I hope manga readers pay attention to the female side because they certainly are more interesting than most of the mainstream female anime characters that are often labeled as “best girl” types.

I’ll start with the 2021 female nominees and the winners (listed in bold) for the two categories.

Best Leading Actress 2021

Hayame Katsuragi (Promise Cinderella) - From what I heard, she’s a very cool character who really is righteous even after going through some rough circumstances. Yoi Takiguchi (In The Clear Moonlight Dusk) - A standout female character from one of shojo’s hottest artists, Mika Yamamori. Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) - One of my favorite heroines of the past decade. Mao Mao (The Apothecary Diaries: The Palace Cloister Mystery-Solving Notebook of Mao Mao) - I’ll be reading this series soon. Yona (Yona of The Dawn) - The winner of the award and I know she’s so beloved by fans of the anime and manga.

Best Supporting Actress 2021

Yoko Sato (The Fable) - An absolute badass. I love that she cares about getting men interested in her drunk beyond belief. Yua Takahashi (Tomorrow I Will Be Someone's Girlfriend) - This is a shojo I’m very interested in reading given the critical reception I heard about this series. Shinobu Wakamiya (Chihayafuru) - The winner of the award and she has a unique look to go along with her determined personality.

And now here are the 2022 nominees in the female character categories.

Best Leading Actress 2022 

Mitsumi Iwakura (Skip and Loafer) - On my to-read list after hearing what a lovable and endearing dork she is from manga bloggers/reviewers.  Marin Kitagawa (My Dress-Up Darling) - She’s a very well-written character and her facial expressions are amazing. Hitori Goto (BOCCHI THE ROCK!) - She’s become quite the internet darling, but I feel that she truly speaks for a generation of introverts who are trying their best. Mao Mao (The Apothecary Diaries) - She might win the award this time. Inori Yuitsuka (Medalist) - I know a certain manga blogger who has been raving about this series.

Best Supporting Actress 2022 (will update this section with the winner once they’re announced)

Ai Haibara (Case Closed) - I know there are Detective Conan fans who are excited about this. Fern (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) - The perfect sidekick for Frieren. Raika (Don't Call it Mystery) - I’m really glad the manga got licensed in the U.S., so I can get to learn about characters like her.

I hope more fans learn more about the Magademy award ceremony for years to come (if they can continue) because there’s a good mix of past, present, and future female characters that will tackle anyone’s fancy. There’s definitely great female characters in mainstream anime, but manga offers a more diverse variety of female characters who have amazing stories worth reading over and can’t always easily be told in anime or live-action.

Let’s definitely give an award to a Japanese bookstore that seems to know and award good taste in female characters.

I love knowing that all of us who are reading Uruwashi no yoi no tsuki, by Mika Yamamori (one of the best shoujo authors, I add), are in love with Yoi's father, HAHAHAHA. It's just that, if we think about it, neither Ichimura nor Oji are a tasteful dish (at least, for me. Ichimura is very cold, he hides many things behind a wall that he puts between himself and the world, and I don't. I see him as a trustworthy person, that last thing is what throws me back the most because it's as if everything had to be as he wanted and well Oji... it's the worst of the worst xD I can't with how manipulative he is under that "nice guy" cloak). On the other hand, Yoi and his family are fascinating in many ways, not only physically speaking, but also in his personality. So... I'M SO SUPPORTIVE OF THAT ATTITUDE FROM THE FANS haha!

PS: If you want to know my opinion... I hope Yoi ends up with someone very different (or even single!) than what we have been presented with. Because he deserves to love himself: he is a wonderful girl! (And more feminine than she thinks). Although, well, it's not my story.

Hi, I’m Ximena, also known as Cosmiciaria, and I’m really happy with this tiny manga I did so I’m gonna share it with the whole world. Sometimes you have to share your happiness and you have the right to. 

It’s not my best creation - but I’m thoroughly proud of it, for many reasons: I have never attempted to draw a manga style before. My tablet is garbage so I can’t directly draw in my digital program, I must first ink traditionally, scan (take photos actually, bc I don’t own a scan) the drawings and then edit all together in my beloved Paint Tool Sai. Special thanks to Coby17 in deviantart for the manga brushes. The text also was taken from screenshots from Microsoft Word. I mean, you get it: I don’t have a manga creator program, my tablet can’t fricking draw, you can’t even write text in Sai, let alone have the comic-like font - and still this is here. It exists. And I’m beyond words with how decent it looks, despite all the setbacks. 

I say all this because I want to show that you can be resourceful, and still achieve it. This isn’t by far the level I aspire to, but it’s a start, and it makes me happy, and that’s why I want to show it to the world. 

These are my characters, Zeid and Serena. Long story short for small context: this is a transcription of a scene I wrote in a story (novel? book?) I’m currently developing/correcting. I wanted to see it in a manga style. He’s a prince from a small kingdom, and has been trying to lay the basis of a peace treaty with the kingdom next door for years now, something his ancestors haven’t been able to achieve. She’s the former princess of this other kingdom (yeah... things happened), but her father is still the king. And he’s been in love with her for years now. This is the kiss scene, which marks a huge milestone in Serena’s life. 

tl;dr: first attempt at a manga, i’m really proud of it, these are my oc’s, share what makes you happy with others. C’est fini.

Posting about this cuz I haven’t seen anyone on tumblr post about it. Kodansha USA has licensed Mika Yamamori’s new manga,Uruwashi no Yoi no Tsuki/In the Clear Moonlit Dusk. so, what shoujo manga are your cup of tea? can you mention what you wanted to say about dessert margaret, you got me interested

First of all: I do love shoujo manga. I enjoy romance stories and see no shame in this. Also I hate when people trash on shoujo only bc it’s shojo and go with that ‘omgnoanotherstupidromanceforteengirls’ as these people won’t ever admit that such a story may show something from a different perspective and is no worse than any generic shounen they praise. But at the same time I kinda get where they are coming from - as I also appreciate when the romance isn’t an end in itself, and characters aren’t walking tropes and I can feel like they have other problems than that. Joseis are more satisfying in this regard, so now I kinda switched to them (though sometimes the diffrence is thin). Soo— when I hear ‘Margaret’ I immediately think ‘oh and now we gotta talk about ROMANCE and NOTHING ELSE’ and in my current state of mind it’s kinda too little to get me interested. I love when you can see characters grow, change their vision of the world, solving problems with friends, parents, lovers, choose their own way to live and be themselves. I love when love interests are also important friends and people who support them. I love stories that make me feel like this world is a better place than we may think when we have hard times (even if these stories have some psychologically heavy stuff - but have some hope within).

So, choosing from shoujo, I guess I’m leaning towards older stuff from Hana to yume or Lala which may be named shoujo but is mature and serious (while having flowers and romance but let’s be honest there are flowers and romance in the real world too and no one calls it unnatural). So, I’m sharing my recs or things that caught my attention but I had no time or mood to get into them yet.

(It got longer in process than I expected, even if I included only things that came into my mind right away, so I put it under the cut.)

I started wriring this post thinking about nowadays series and in process learned about oldschool series that were serialized in these magazines and wrote a bit about them too.

Another masterpiece from Author Yamamori Mika. Since 'Harunaka no Ryuusei', i've been a fan of her drawings. They all are sooo beautiful. The eyes, body portion, face, hair, even the clothes, all of them are pleasing to eyes.

Actually, the story plot is kinda cliche, but the way she delivers the story in such detailed way and pay much attention to subtle expression, makes a great execution overall.

It's about a girl, Fumi (16) who become a housekeeper because she and her father been kicked out from their rent house, and living separately. Fumi works in a house of novelist, Akatsuki (28) who has cold and emotionless characters but really passionate into writings and history. Fumi, despite still being a high schooler, she is so mature. Living alone with her father since her mom died, she gets used to do house chores include cooking.

The highlight of this story is about the two main characters who have similar tragic background, inexperience to love and express emotion, but smh they fall in love towards each other. There are so many conflicts and each of them teach a great life lesson.

Not only the MC, but the side characters are amazing as well. I've relieved cuz there are no trash characters like how usually exist just to make the story more well spicy but meh. i prefer this kind of trope, no third wheel. Eventho Gorou seems to become the second ML but he's wise enough to know his place. I like Gorou the most among others even the MC because of his manipulative characters but in a good way. He's observant and sensitive, and such a best supporter for the MC.

This series are wholesome, it manages to have dark, sad, fluff. I even had my heart beats faster lol when sensei akatsuki tried to approach fumi, well he's hot i admit it.

Daytime Shooting Star, Vol. 2

Daytime Shooting Star Volume 2 by Mika Yamamori

I can usually tell if I’ll like a series after I read the first volume, but after two volumes I can more easily decide if I really like it. The second volume of Daytime Shooting Star still features plenty of angst over a potential student-teacher romance, but the supporting cast was featured a little more and I started to find this series endearingly quirky.

The second volume opens with the shoujo staple of a school trip, and when Suzume finds herself accidentally trapped in a ravine with Mamura the boy who is pathologically afraid of being touched by a girl, they actually have a couple moments of conversation. Suzume passes out just in time for Mr. Shishio to come to the rescue, and Yuyuka quickly figures out that Suzume has a crush when she visits her in the aftermath of the forest adventure. Yuyuka’s offhand gestures of friendship and blunt personality are a useful contrast to Suzume’s tendency to get lost in thought about her new life. There’s a hilarious scene when Suzume is studying and Yuyuka’s usual social mask slips as she launches into a tirade and Suzume grabs Mamura’s arm in a desperate attempt at distraction. Yuyuka then finds herself beset with a group of boys who follow her around in hopes of being berated. In the meantime, Mamura seems to have gotten over his fear of girls, but only with Suzume.

This volume sets up an entertaining soap opera with plenty of humor as well as more quiet moments of reflection. I’m also enjoying the art in Daytime Shooting Star, Yamamori’s character designs have a touch of whimsy, and she easily shifts from more cartoonish exaggeration to panels that highlight contemplation and internal emotion.
