Chapter 17 is here!!! Fumi had my heart hurting so much in this chapter, she's been through so much. She's had to be so strong for both her and her father, and she's never been in a place where she can let herself be tired and lonely. I hope Akatsuki realizes soon that he's become that space for her soon.
Chapter 18 is fully translated and coming your way soon!

Chapter 16 is here! I missed reblogging the last couple chapters because I’ve been super busy with school and travel, but I’m back on track now!
This chapter was so satisfying! Katsura gets what’s coming to her, and Fumi finally tells someone how she really feels! It’s moments like these that are why I read shoujo~
Chapter 17 is fully translated and in the works! See you all again soon!
Download: tr.im/tclp16 Or read more under the cut!

I'm the scanlator of a series that has absolutely no chance of an English adaption even though the artist is popular. I'd love if my translation didn't end up on manga sites but there's no alternative. It'll end up there no matter what. Might seem like a silly question, but do you think it would ever be possible for official publishers to create sites for scanlations of series' like this?
Actually, just such a site exists. It’s called Manga Reborn: http://en.mangareborn.jp/
Its selection is limited because manga artists retain some copyright to their work, and so each artist needs to give their permission for their work to be translated. Generally, artists react negatively to unauthorized translations, though there are exceptions.
A few more notes in general: The English-language manga industry is growing again, and depending on what title you’re referring to its chances of getting licensed may not be as bad as you think. Secondly, there is a way to translate manga and not have it end up on aggregator sites: Create translations as practice and share them only privately with friends. This is something I used to do, and I know lots of Japanese students who do the same. In this way, you can build your skills and get the satisfaction of working on what you love without the ethical problems. It’s also a way to build a portfolio you can share with potential employers, who will respect you for not releasing unauthorized work to the public.
On that note, I would also suggest getting into professional translation work if you haven’t already. By doing so you will not only make money for yourself, you will also contribute to the idea that translation is work that has value, and in that way you’re helping all translators.

Although I think it's good to expose Azusa and the WT scandal, wouldn't it affect the scanlation community and put scanlation groups at risk?
This is a good question. I want to clarify a few things that will hopefully clear up any concerns:
My intention isn’t to “expose” anyone. I am in no way setting out to either condemn or exonerate Azusa with this piece. What I want is to share the story of what happened is as non-biased a way as possible, discuss what this story can tell us about scanlation, and talk about how we as scanlators fit into the global manga industry. This story has a lot of elements that I think would make for great radio, and it’s a way to talk about scanlation with a larger audience.
Privacy is really important to me. Anyone who has agreed to share their story with me has been given the option to use a fake name to protect their identities. I will also give everyone featured in the final cut a chance to hear the story before it is published to ensure that I have represented them properly. If they decide they don’t want their voice included, then they can request I remove any audio of them from the piece.
I am talking to more than just those in the scanlation community for this piece. Sources for this piece include scanlators, industry professionals, and members of academia who have written on the subject of scanlation. This means that both sides of the scanlation debate will be represented.
While it is a radio story, to the best of my knowledge this piece shall not be broadcast. I am student producing this piece for a class. I am not a professional reporter. This piece will be shared at a public documentary collective and gallery in May, and it will be posted to Soundcloud.
I love scanlation, but I also think both the scanlation community and the manga industry have a lot problems. I think it’s important that these issues are discussed publicly. By doing this piece I want to create a stepping-off point for more dialogue between scanlators and those working within the industry. I know that sounds pretentious as hell, but I really do mean it. That’s why I think this piece is important, and why this story should be shared.

Winter Translations and Radio
So I wouldn’t normally ask for help this way, but unique circumstances require that I do. I am reporting and producing a radio piece about the scandal that took place last year involving Winter Translations and its admin, the infamous Azusa (if you haven’t heard about this, read all about it here).
I want to answer this question:
If the money Azusa stole was going to be used to used for an illegal activity anyway (yes, scanlation is illegal), then is what she did wrong, and should she be punished for it?
So, if you...
Had dealings with Winter Translations or any of Azusa’s multiple personalities
Want to share your opinion about Azusa and what she did
Think scanlation is wrong
Think scanlation is right
Have any story/opinion/thoughts about scanlation AT ALL
then I would LOVE to hear from you!! Drop me an ask, reblog this post and add your thoughts, or message me!
Even if you personally don’t have anything you want to share, if you could reblog this post so others can see it, I will literally love you forever.

New Project: “union“ by Ishino Aya
I am very pleased to announce that I will be taking on a new, independent project! This will be a completely one-woman show, with scanning, cleaning, translation, and typesetting all done by me. Seeing as I’ve never scanned, cleaned, or typeset a manga before, this should be interesting!
Title: union
Author: Ishino Aya
Serialized in Rutile’s Sweet, 2011-2013
Length: 1 Volume; 10 Chapters
Genre: BL; Slice of Life; Music
Summary: [From back cover] A band formed by a group of classmates (and one kid a year older) from their high school Light Music Club: KETCHUPPERS. Now they’ve joined the ranks of the famous as their name makes it into the top charts. On stage they soothe the souls of office ladies and put hearts in the eyes of high school girls, but what about backstage? Can Hashitani (Tani) reign in his partner-in-crime Wakatabe (Waka), or will Wakatabe just run wild? Includes an exclusively drawn one-shot.
I’m really excited, and I hope you all are too! Look for updates coming soon!

Hooray!! Chapter 14 is out (ta-da~)!! I know this chapter is a little slow plot wise, but I think it's so important for Fumi's character development. I found the internal monologue just heartbreaking in this chapter, and I really hope I did it justice. I think everyone can relate to how Fumi feels in this chapter, on some level. It can be so mortifying and painful to build up an expectation of something only to have that expectation shattered. I think we've all wondered whether what we're trying so hard to do is worth it, and if we should keep going or just cut our losses and quit. I want to reach into the pages and just give Fumi a big hug and say, "It's ok, girl! We've all been there! You're fabulous and don't ever change!" Chapter 15 is 100% translated and moving rapidly towards release, so look for that coming real soon!

Hey everyone! We’re trying to hurry up in order to catch up to the latest chapters in Japan, hence the relatively fast release. This is a pretty slow chapter (what’s new), but as usual please enjoy Yamamori Mika’s glorious artwork. –Charlotte

Chapter 13 is here!! I want to express my utmost respect for Charlotte, our Quality Checker, who really pulled through to get this release out. You go girl!
I cannot articulate how much I LOVE Katsura, she is everything I've ever wanted out of a rival - cunning, smart, and gorgeous. I cannot get enough! Good luck Fumi! (lol)
I had great fun learning about the Drunken Whale Daimyou in this chapter, Japanese history is full of great characters like this.
Chapters 14 and 15 are translated and on their way to release by Damn Feels, so look forward them!
I tried something new by giving a little once sentence preview from my translation of Chapter 13, do you like these? Let me know if you think I should continue!

Hello! I have personally used all of these, so I can assure you they are useful! If there is something wrong with a website or a link, please let me know. Also, if you have any questions or if you want a learning buddy, my ask box is open. (I speak English and Spanish. I’m learning Korean, German, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, and Esperanto)

Chapter 11 is up! I’ve been waiting for Fumi to get into a time sale battle, ever since reading Switch Girl it’s been one of my favorite tropes. Too bad Fumi’s a ninja and less a member of the cavalry - I would have liked to see her charge headlong into battle.
Speaking of tropes, there’s some classic one’s coming up in the next two chapters, so look forward to them! *maniac laughter*.
One of my favorite things about translating these stories is learning about little cultural references I didn’t know about before. Full discloser - often the things I write about in the translator’s notes are brand new to me too! This chapter taught be about myouga (which I now HAVE to try) and Koshihikari rice. It’s funny, because these small references are often in the background or throwaway lines (ch 13 has a good example coming up), and yet it’s these lines that take me the longest to translation, and get all the attention in the translator’s notes. If you ever get the chance to translate a chapter of manga, take it - it will help your language skills immensely.
Anyway, enjoy Chapter 11!

It’s!! Finally!! Out!! (一。一;;) Anyway, I’m experimenting with a new look for the credit pages. Hope it goes over well. As usual, big thanks to the lovely katita-chan (deviantART | Tumblr) for giving us permission to use her coloring of Yoh-chan. –Charlotte

My Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet volumes arrived! As the translator for this series I’ve probably read these chapters more than anyone else except for Charlotte (damn-feels’ guardian angel), but it’s still wonderful to have the series in book form (not to mention legally).
If you can, buy Yamamori-sensei’s work. We work hard to bring you these scanlations, but Yamamori-sensei worked harder, and it’s really her you should be thanking for these stories. We’ve told what the words mean, so buying the book in Japanese shouldn’t be a problem, right?
