I think maybe not enough people in disability spaces think about what it's like to need the assistance of a carer.
It's a different experience for different levels of need. Some of us might need only low support, or support with specific tasks. Others need higher support, and there are many disabled people who need assistance with most or all daily tasks.
Dependence is a scary thought for some people, but for many it's a part of everyday life. Some level of dependence is common for disabled people, and needing carers or support workers is not as uncommon as people think.
Disability conversations often don't discuss carers, or don't allow people to bring their carers into the conversation. Some people may need assistance from carers or support workers to be in a physical place for community. Some might need help using online spaces like tumblr. Some might need help communicating. Carers are a part of life for many and talking about carers is important.
Carers can be positive, supportive and good relationships. But can also be stifling or even abusive. Care is complicated, and people should be able to talk about it.
I can only talk about my experience of lower level care. I invite people with formal support workers and full time care to share.

Wednesday = Emily day!
I had a good time with my support worker 😄. We finished watching Mean Girls from last week. And watched the start of Heathers (again!! I have watched it at least 6 times since last Wednesday!!!). I told Mum that and she said she is not surprised. 🤣
We also played cards - blackjack again. With Mum too as usual. That is fun! I love to win 😄😂.
I am feeling very happy. And it is rain now, so not feel as hot!! And I can smell the rain which I love.
And sister brought second snack to me and I got to say hi and see her new hoop earrings! She looks very beautiful as always ❤️. She booped my nose 😆😁!
Fixation on Heathers and Mean Girls The Musical and Barrett Wilbert Weed still going strong. I ordered the Heathers original film DVD. Mum wants to watch it too, I say we can watch together, she say maybe downstairs when I get my special chair! (With fingers crossed that it is good for me).
I also bought and watched the Mean Girls original film (from 2004). I have seen it before but only once or twice a few years ago. It was cool to remember how funny it is! I also think I understand the characters and the "message" better now - that is partly because of the musical helping me understand with the songs and music.
I feel really proud about having bedroom door open so much and letting a bit more of the outside world and other people in. I think it is good for me to be around people and have positive interactions.
Every time I see Emily or another person, I feel slightly more relaxed.
It all makes me feel smiley. 😊😁😄!

whenever I say I worked at a care home people always assume I mean an OLD PEOPLE'S care home and start talking about dementia, and even when I correct them and say no, it was adults of all ages with disabilities like cerebral palsy, some of them younger than me, people still don't listen and start talking about how hard it is "when you get to that age".
like people who live in 24/7 care for their entire adult lives exist!!!! residential care is NOT something that only comes into play at the end of your life. lack of awareness and funding is, in my opinion, partly why negative experiences of full time or respite residential care are so widespread.
ALSO when I successfully clarify that I worked with people of all ages, people start talking about how SAD it is when young people who have conditions like cerebral palsy can't move or talk or whatever. and I ALSO take issue with that. I think seeing disabled people's experiences as wholly "sad" or "what a shame" pre-emptively dictates what kind of life we expect disabled people to live. people in residential care CAN be happy, largely independent, or happy with their level of control where they are dependent on others. if we assume they can't, we won't even try to help them get there.
some people have high support needs at home and then go into residential care. some people spend their whole lives in residential care. some people won't need it at all with proper support and funding at home. people need support, not pity and people seeing their lives as lost causes.

@janemorris this is wonderful! Would you mind if I made an adaption based on this concept for a dissociation scale as well?
I've been working alongside the OT to try and come up with a functional dissociation scale that you can actually *use* while dissociated, and this format may be a winner since it's simple, has instructions, and a visual component.
Tumblr media
my pain scale invention. it goes from 0-16. you fill it out like this:
Tumblr media
i made this because i find pain to be a multifaceted thing that influences me in different ways. i can accomplish lots of small tasks while in pain but that doesnt mean i can move around or even think clearly. its name is the goldstein expanded pain index or gepi. you can use it if you want. or not.

Ppl who work in the medical system are sooo ableist omg. We'll be like "sorry you can't return to your life's work for 2 weeks, I know your family relies on the income from that farm to survive but you're healing so do please take rest sorry about calving season tho" & then turn around to our coworker & be like "wym your kids sick & you needa go home why even have kids then did you think about the patients". I'm struggling to come up with reasons to have a support worker and what I would do with them. I'm finding the idea pointless.
I do want a support worker but all I can think about for them to do is change my sheets on my bed. If I moved out of my parents house I'd have so much for them to help me with. But for now I'm really struggling.

the thing is that they're so fascinated by sex, they love sex, they can't imagine a world without sex - they need sex to sell things, they need sex to be part of their personality, they need sex to prove their power - but they hate sex. they are disgusted by it.
sex is the only thing that holds their attention, and it is also the thing that can never be discussed directly.
you can't tell a child the normal names for parts of their body, that's sexual in nature, because the body isn't a body, it's a vessel of sex. it doesn't matter that it's been proven in studies (over and over) that kids need to know the names of their genitals; that they internalize sexual shame at a very young age and know it's 'dirty' to have a body; that it overwhelmingly protects children for them to have the correct words to communicate with. what matters is that they're sexual organs. what matters is that it freaks them out to think about kids having body parts - which only exist in the context of sex.
it's gross to talk about a period or how to check for cancer in a testicle or breast. that is nasty, illicit. there will be no pain meds for harsh medical procedures, just because they feature a cervix.
but they will put out an ad of you scantily-clad. you will sell their cars for them, because you have abs, a body. you will drip sex. you will ooze it, like a goo. like you were put on this planet to secrete wealth into their open palms.
they will hit you with that same palm. it will be disgusting that you like leather or leashes, but they will put their movie characters in leather and latex. it will be wrong of you to want sexual freedom, but they will mark their success in the number of people they bed.
they will crow that it's inappropriate for children so there will be no lessons on how to properly apply a condom, even to teens. it's teaching them the wrong things. no lessons on the diversity of sexual organ growth, none on how to obtain consent properly, none on how to recognize when you feel unsafe in your body. if you are a teenager, you have probably already been sexualized at some point in your life. you will have seen someone also-your-age who is splashed across a tv screen or a magazine or married to someone three times your age. you will watch people pull their hair into pigtails so they look like you. so that they can be sexy because of youth. one of the most common pornography searches involves newly-18 young women. girls. the words "barely legal," a hiss of glass sand over your skin.
barely legal. there are bills in place that will not allow people to feel safe in their own bodies. there are people working so hard to punish any person for having sex in a way that isn't god-fearing and submissive. heteronormative. the sex has to be at their feet, on your knees, your eyes wet. when was the first time you saw another person crying in pornography and thought - okay but for real. she looks super unhappy. later, when you are unhappy, you will close your eyes and ignore the feeling and act the role you have been taught to keep playing. they will punish the sex workers, remove the places they can practice their trade safely. they will then make casual jokes about how they sexually harass their nanny.
and they love sex but they hate that you're having sex. you need to have their ornamental, perfunctory, dispassionate sex. so you can't kiss your girlfriend in the bible belt because it is gross to have sex with someone of the same gender. so you can't get your tubes tied in new england because you might change your mind. so you can't admit you were sexually assaulted because real men don't get hurt, you should be grateful. you cannot handle your own body, you cannot handle the risks involved, let other people decide that for you. you aren't ready yet.
but they need you to have sex because you need to have kids. at 15, you are old enough to parent. you are not old enough to hear the word fuck too many times on television.
they are horrified by sex and they never stop talking about it, thinking about it, making everything unnecessarily preverted. the saying - a thief thinks everyone steals. they stand up at their podiums and they look out at the crowd and they sign a bill into place that makes sexwork even more unsafe and they stand up and smile and sign a bill that makes gender-affirming care illegal and they get up and they shrug their shoulders and write don't say gay and they get up, and they make the world about sex, but this horrible, plastic vision of it that they have. this wretched, emotionless thing that holds so much weight it's staggering. they put their whole spine behind it and they push and they say it's normal!
this horrible world they live in. disgusted and also obsessed.
#this shifts gender so much bc it actually affects everyone#yes it's a gendered phenomenon. i have written a LOT about how different genders experience it. that's for a different post.#writeblr#ps my comments about seeing someone cry -- this is not to shame any person#and on this blog we support workers.#at the same time it's a really hard experience to see someone that looks like you. clearly in agony. and have them forced to keep going.#when you're young it doesn't necessarily look like acting. it looks scary. and that's what this is about - the fact that teens#have likely already been exposed to that definition of things. because the internet exists#and without the context of healthy education. THAT is the image burned into their minds about what it looks like.#it's also just one of those personal nuanced biases -#at 19 i thought it was normal to be in pain. to cry. to not-like-it. that it should be perfunctory.#it was what i had seen.#and it didn't help that my religious upbringing was like . 'yeah that's what you get for premarital. but also for the reference#we do think you should never actually enjoy it lol'#so like the point im making is that ppl get exposed to that stuff without the context of something more tender#and assume .... 'oh. so it's fine i am not enjoying myself'. and i know they do because I DID.#he was my first boyfriend. how was i supposed to know any different#i didn't even have the mental wherewithal to realize im a lesbian . like THAT used to suffering.

what kind of things do you do with your support worker? I've recently gotten one and while I'm excited i think the only things I'm thinking of are like. independence stuff i have but i don't always have days where I need to do stuff but it's a support day
Sorry take so long to answer! I like questions but it is hard to answer with words.
With my support worker she sits in my bedroom next to my bed and we watch things on my laptop. And we usually play card game (blackjack) with Mum also.
That is basically all I do with support worker. So far, anyway. Maybe more in the future but I take a long time to get used to new routines and people and doing more things. So it will be very gradual.
And other people are in charge of that because I can't even remember people exist if they are not in front of me, so I definitely can't think of "plans" for what to do with.
I can't really plan at all. Except for maybe "plan" for what to watch on laptop - I can do that because it is always right in front of me. And yet still I forget many options exist and usually rewatch same things over and over 🤷🏻‍♂️.
So far with support worker it has mainly been same Heathers bootleg we watch. Because it is safe and familiar and makes it easier being near New Person (that I am still getting used to).
This is maybe not a very good or helpful answer. Because I can't decide or plan things to do by myself. So other people just give options to me and I choose.
Also support worker so far just spends time with me in my bedroom. Not doing any actual physical support task things yet. Even when support worker comes on a bath day, Mum still does bath as usual with me.
Don't know if maybe that will happen in future 🤷🏻‍♂️ other people mainly decide that, not me (I can say no or yes to things of course). Don't know if even that is an option or allowed 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️. I have no idea about these things.
