Superman: Classic Design [July 1, 2024] by Supes Guy
Been a while since I posted. I'll be going back to the old method of showing one image at a time. It seems better to distribute the images once a day for folks to see. Also because some folks miss seeing my costume :)

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s @emeraldcitycomiccon 2024!
This was my first time attending a general “comic” con. In the past, I’ve only attended anime conventions with the exception of a horror convention (CryptiCon) a few years ago. The biggest difference between these more generalized comic-cons vs. anime-cons is that comic-cons tend to place more of an emphasis on American/Western comics, fandoms, and pop culture whereas anime-cons focus on Japanese/East Asian comics, fandoms, and pop culture. ECCC in particular is focused on superhero and science fiction fandoms. The largest fandom that I saw represented cosplay-wise was Star Wars. This could be due to the release of their new trading card game through Disney. It’s interesting to see the differences between these two convention cultures, it helps with understanding their target audiences.
Since I was only attending this con for one day and it’s held during the off-season for cosplay, I chose to put together a “pseudo-cosplay” from clothing items that I already owned vs. building an entirely new one from scratch. I call this look “Franken-cyberpunk.” I took a normal outfit of mine, slapped some green body paint on, and voila an OC is born! I felt like this aesthetic would best fit the theme of the con.
Here are some highlights from Saturday:
Slide 1: Franken-selfie outside of the Exhibitor’s Hall (Arch).
Slide 2: Candid pose inside of “ECCC” logo monument outside of the Artist Alley (Summit).
Slide 3: Frankenblossoming in front of what appears to be a backdrop depicting the UW Quad.
Slide 4: Selfie with Maile Flanagan, English voice actor for Naruto.
Slide 5: Batman and Catwoman posing dramatically.
Slide 6: The scariest Darth Vader cosplay I’ve ever encountered.
Slide 7: Funky Darth Vader (he’s your daddy).
Slide 8: Cosplay Contest finalists, 1st place won $1,000!!!
Slide 9: Cruella posing next to an unknown cosplayer.
Slide 10: Alice Cooper about to feed me, his Frankenstein, at the Nerd Prom in the Main Stage (Summit).
Thank you again ECCC 2024 for putting on such a fantastic exhibition.

As someone who only recently got properly into Magic this year my stance on the recent UB Standard legality is that so long as the mechanics are good, fun to play, and work well with the other Standard legal sets then I don't particularly care if Final Fantasy is legal.
But.
There is something about the Marvel Universe being Standard Legal that feels off. Final Fantasy shares many aesthetic and gameplay similarities to Magic that make it slide into the general ecosystem better from a Look/Feel perspective. Meanwhile, as much of a Spider-Man fan as I am, it is going to be incredibly weird seeing Peter Parker or Miles Morales face off against the critters of Bloomburrow, even more than Thunder Junction or Duskmourn do.
I will attend the Final Fantasy and Spider-Man prereleases because I love playing Magic and I am interested in both sets, but I cannot shake the feeling that this decision makes the overall play experience strange, especially since SIX Standard sets of a year is way overdoing it (maybe 3 In-Universe sets and 1 UB set would be a better balance?)
I understand the decision from a logical standpoint but the emotional reaction to Magic losing some of its Qualia is something that I can't ignore
I have read many of the responses to my request for emotional responses yesterday (I will continue reading - there are just a lot of people sharing). A common through line is the feeling of loss, that the decisions we’ve been making are taking things away from them.
So, I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that I believe Universes Beyond is adding to the game. I’m not talking about value to other people that aren’t you, but something that is upside to the enfranchised players that are the backbone of the game.
As I’m head designer, my focus is on mechanics and the core gameplay experience of playing the game. Universes Beyond has been a bolt of energy for the design of the game.
Because so many of you are sharing personal stories, I’ll use my own experiences as a way to illustrate my point.
One day, when I was seven or eight, I woke up and went downstairs to see that my Dad had bought me a comic book and left it out on the counter for me as a surprise. It was Spider-Man.
I must have read that comic ten times. It was the start of a life long love of comic books. I’m not quite sure why the superhero genre, in particular, spoke to me so strongly, but it did.
As a teenager I was a bit of an outcast, and when I stumbled upon the X-Men, it felt like a story that was core to my lived experience. I too was an outsider, but out there were people like me and if I could find those people, we could bond over our similarities.
I enjoy designing Magic. I mean really, really enjoy designing Magic. I don’t throw around the term “dream job” lightly. It is truly a lifelong passion. I spend so much time writing about it because it is something that brings me so much joy, and there is a desire to share that joy with others, my found family that shares my similarities.
Designing Marvel cards has been electrifying. I have spent years mastering the art of Magic design. Getting to combine that with my love of Marvel characters has been inspirational. It has inspired to make designs I would have never thought of.
It has pushed me in directions I couldn’t have predicted and resulted in designs that tickle both my inner Mel and Vorthoses.
And it hasn’t just affected my own designs. I have given more notes on card designs than I have in my twenty nine years at Wizards.
For example, the amount of back and forth with Aaron who designed the five Secret Lair cards we recently revealed at New York ComicCon was exhaustive. He and I have long bonded over our shared love of Marvel, so getting to translate that into Magic with him has been amazing.
And each Universes Beyond product we’re making has people as equally passionate about that property.
My point is from purely a design perspective, Universes Beyond has had huge dividends. It has inspired us to make fresh new designs. It has sparked creativity. We are making awesome card designs, mechanics, themes, and sets, things that most likely wouldn’t have come into existence otherwise.
The passion that beloved characters and worlds has inspired in us is translated into amazing Magic design, something that will make the act of playing Magic better for anyone who enjoys the nuts and bolts of the raw gameplay of Magic.

cosplay (n.) - the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game.
First time attending @rosecitycc this year. Although the heat was unbearable and was unable to get my (real) cosplay together in time, I was able to at least appreciate the work of others.
Here’s to the kickoff of cosplay season in Portland.

Small fun fact about me:
My mom is neurodivergent too! And not only that, but
Me and my mom share a special interest.
[A short post about me, my mom, hyperfixations, and how acceptance can help you grow]
For the last ten years, both me and my mother have had a hyperfixation on Marvel movies and Superhero movies in general.
And if anything, she's more fixated than I am.
This started at the same time, despite my mother never picking up a comic in her life. It happened when we first saw the Avengers in theatres in 2012.
Since then me and my mother have seen every Marvel movie on the day of release, or even a day before release.
When I was in high school, I remember her specifically pulling me out of school early to take me to the marathon premiere of Thor 2 and The Winter Soldier.
She's seen every Marvel media to date outside of the Netflix series. She's already finished Secret Invasion.
In recent years, we've gotten Unlimited movie memberships, and because we live in NY we can often see movies the Thursday before the Friday release, so we go to the movies almost twice a month, and we see movies repeatedly.
I saw ATSV three times in theatres while she saw it twice, and saw GOTG a second or third time. We recently saw Blue Beetle the day or two after release. She keeps me CONSISTENT.
The reason why I theorize about Marvel media and Spider-man media is largely because of her.
For years she was the one I theorized with. I've spoken to her about whether or not Peter set Miles up (she isn't convinced), or argue with her about whether or not Khonsu from Moon Knight is cool (he is).
She watches more Marvel fan content than me and inhales all the essays, reacts, and Easter egg videos on YouTube.
She's the same with recent Star Wars, she's seen Andor and Boba Fett and the Mandalorian, and currently working her way through Asoka.
And she knew about my past fixation on Loki in specific. She even knows about Hobie and Diane.
I told her I want to go to NY ComicCon as my spidersona and she was like "... You'd have to work on your roller skating" and I was SHOOK she remembered that about Diane because she's right.
But yeah, we've always been REALLY REALLY close over marvel stuff, and it's amazing having a parent who has the same fixation as you. It's like a natural thing, and I can speak openly about my theories or interests and she'll be like 'Oh yeah I noticed that incredibly niche moment where Hobie did that one specific thing, what of it'
I'm never treated weird for my fixation. Cause hers is stronger. I told her I didn't want to see GOTG again and she was like HUH and I was so heartbroken that I went and saw it anyway 😭😭
Some of my favorite moments with my mom are in movies theatres. And because we share this niche interest and neurodivergency, we're able to have these in-depth conversations about these characters we've formed bonds to together.
When Loki the show came out we'd been waiting literal years for it - like literally since 2013 talking about it. And I had a lot of mixed feelings about it.
But I could talk about those feelings and thoughts and characterizations with someone I know wouldn't ostracize me, knows the material as well as I do - if not more, and cares about these characters.
Because of that, my theorizing skills were able to grow all throughout my teenage years.
Because my hyperfixation was nurtured instead of demonized.
And I just think that's SO COOL.
Just wanted to share. Here's a photo of Miguel because I hate consistency [this is a hobie household]
