A Christmas Miracle-Chapter 4
Fandom: Supergirl
Characters: Lena Luthor, Kara Danvers, Ruby Arias, Santa Claus, Streaky the cat, Lillian Luthor, Alex Danvers, Cupid
Summary: After her last two breakups, Lena doesn't think there is love out there for her. However, will Ruby's wish to Santa make Lena a believer in miracles?
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3
Kara and Lena stared at each other like deer caught in headlights in complete silence for several minutes. It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Kara felt a great deal of emotions. She was excited to see Lena. She had been thinking of the raven-haired beauty all day. However, she was scared out of her mind.
What do I say to her? It was so messed up the way we left things last time with the shoot-out.
However, a more mortifying thought came to Kara as she slowly looked down at the keys in her hand.
I have her keys in my hands. How do I explain that? I could tell her that Santa wanted me to find her after the mugging to make sure she got this. Yeah, that sounds good….or does it? What if she doesn’t believe Santa sent me? What if she thinks I have ill intention….
As Kara spiraled, Streaky looked up at his owner with mild amusement. He looked over to Lena who was in a similar state. Streaky shook his head and wiggled out of Kara’s arm, jotted over to Lena, started to purr loudly, and rubbed against her leg.
Suddenly, both women were shaken out of their inner turmoil and noticed their surroundings.
“Streaky, don’t do that!” shrilled Kara as she started to jog over to Lena and the cat.
Lena chuckled as she picked up Streaky and started to cuddle with him. Lena looked up at Kara with a smile which caused Kara to stop dead in her tracks and blush.
She looks so pretty when she smiles.
Lena blushed as she looked down at Streaky and said, “Don’t be mad at Streaky. He is just what I need after the day I had.”
Kara frowned and asked. “Are you okay?”
Lena tried to chuckle, quickly wiped a tear from her face, and said, “Nothing that a bottle of scotch couldn’t cure.”
Kara came closer and pressed her hand on Lena’s shoulder which caused her to blush.
“I know I am not scotch, but I would be happy to lend an ear to listen.”
Lena looked at Kara conflicted and asked, “Are you sure? I don’t want to derail any plans you have.”
Kara chuckled and said, “Streaky and I don’t have any set plans.”
Streaky looked up at Kara with narrow eyes, ears flattened downward, and purred loudly.
Kara rolled her eyes and said sarcastically, “Food will be included in whatever we do Streaky.”
Streaky purred happily as he pounced back into Kara’s arm.
Lena chuckled and said, “If you guys are sure, I would enjoy the company.”
Kara beamed and said, “If you like, we can go to my apartment, and I can brew us some coffee.”
Lena smiled and said, “That sounds perfect. I can drive us.” Lena smirked at Kara and said, “As long as you can hand back the keys, which I am curious about how you ended up with by the way.”
Kara chuckled hesitantly and said, “It’s a long story. The short version is that Santa sent me in your direction.”
Lena looked at Kara baffled.
Kara looked at Lena mortified and exclaimed, “I know how it sounds, but it’s true! I was over at the park and….”
Lena stared at her hesitantly for a moment.
It can’t be the same Santa, can it?
Lena quickly shook her head, slightly smiled, and said, “No, it just sounds really eventful, and I would love to hear more about it on the way back to your place. Let’s head out.”
Kara smiled brightly and said, “I would love that.”
Streaky purred loudly and rubbed up against Kara’s face.
Lena chuckled and said, “It looks like Streaky agrees too.”
Kara chuckled and said, “Streaky is just happy that he is about to be fed.”
Streaky nodded in agreement.
Lena cackled as she, Kara, and Streaky got in the car and drove off.

Nothing like listening to Christmas music and suddenly getting a great idea for a cute Supercorp holiday story that you’re super excited about, but then when you start thinking about plot points you realize that it will absolutely need to be a multi-chap and will most definitely take at least until next Christmas to write… *sigh*

New SuperCorp Story!!!!
The Winning Bid (rated T)
Lena finds herself donating ten thousand dollars as she and a board member’s wife get into a bidding war. The prize? A date with National City’s Girl of Steel.
AO3 and FFN
Rubbing my temples, I stared at Sam and Jess who sat across from me. Both looked perfectly content after their outlandish proposal for the fundraiser. Are you kidding me? Auctioning off a date with Kara, well Supergirl, as a prize for National City’s Winter Fundraiser. It would bring in funds but how do I ask that type of question to my best friend? How will I feel seeing Kara on a date with someone? Especially another woman. She’s not been on a date since Mon-El. Is she even ready for that?
“Miss Luthor?” Jess questioned. “Are you alright? You have that look in your eyes again.”
“The one where she’s trying desperately to not admit she’s head over heels for her best friend and the thought of someone on a date with said best friend makes her skin crawl?” Sam’s eyes narrowed. “Definitely,” she chuckled. “If you strain too hard, you may burst a vessel. How are you going to explain that to Kara?”
“Shut up, Sam,” I grumbled. The action caused the brunette to laugh harder. “I could fire you.”
“You could,” she smirked, “but you won’t. You love me and Ruby too much.” Becoming serious, Sam continued. “The fundraiser is in a few weeks so you’ll need to ask Kara soon.” Hearing a soft knock, the woman grinned. “I wonder who that could be? Someone who has permission to freely walk in and knock on your door.” Jess looked between the two of us, refusing to make a sound. The tightness of her jaw barely hid her amused grin.
Running a hand through my hair, I tried to compose myself before the reporter entered. “Come in, Kara.”
“Hey!” Blue eyes fell on Sam and Jess. “Oh, am I interrupting a meeting?” Placing her bag and jacket on the coat rack, Kara studied us. “Is everything okay?”
“Lena has a question for you.” Sam stood with a grin. “Jess and I were just leaving. See you soon.” With that, the two women left. “Oh, Lena!” Sam popped her head back in. “See you at the meeting this afternoon.”
“Leave,” I smirked. I should fire them both. Sadly, both are far too good at their jobs to lose. Sighing, I leaned back in my chair.
“What’s going on? I could feel the tension as soon as I walked in.” Taking a seat, Kara’s brows furrowed. “And your heart rate is elevated.” She paused to listen again. “More than just too much caffeine.” Does she always listen to my heartbeat? My stomach dropped remembering a few select late nights after having one too many drinks. I hope not. “Lena?”
“Nothing is wrong,” I tried to smile. “I have a meeting with the board later today and have a favor to ask you.”
“Sure. What can I do?”
“I need Supergirl’s help,” I began. “The board has put me in charge of the door prizes for this year’s charity event.” Kara nodded, unsure of where I was going. “As you know, most of the attendees are of higher tax brackets so the prizes need to be elevated to compensate. Sam and Jess had the idea of auctioning off a date with-,” My voice trailed off. I swallowed a groan. “With Supergirl.”
“Oh…” Kara’s face fell.
“Obviously, you can say “no” and I’ll figure something else out.” Half of me wants you to say no but I have no idea what else I’ll do. I can’t exactly auction myself up.
“It’s for the children’s hospital and Toys For Tots, right?” I nodded. “Then I’ll do it.”
Relief washed over me. “You really don’t have to if-,”
“Will it help you?” The blonde studied me.
“You have no idea how much,” I sighed.
“I’ll do it,” Kara smiled. Please, don’t say it. “That’s what friends are for.”
Forcing a smile, I thanked the blonde and changed the subject. “When is Eliza flying in? I’m sure you and Alex are excited to see her.”
“We are!” She beamed. “Mom insisted we still have the Christmas party.” Kara paused, becoming bashful. “I hope you can make it. Alex invited Sam and Ruby. Everyone else will be there too.”
As if I could say no to that hopeful sparkle in your eyes. God, I’m wrapped around this woman’s finger. “Of course I’ll come. I bet you’ve already decorated for Christmas.”
“Yup!” Kara beamed. “Day after Thanksgiving I put everything up.”
“Of course you did,” I grinned. I love seeing how happy Christmas makes her.
“Halloween is your holiday and Christmas is mine!” She paused. “Have you decorated yet?”
My stomach dropped. “I don’t normally decorate since…” My voice trailed.
“Oh…” Kara fumbled, brow creasing.
What is she planning? I know that look. “Do I need to bring anything to the party?”
“We do a gift exchange each year. All gifts are under fifty dollars.”
“I’ll make sure to pick something up then.” Besides the gift I got you yesterday. “Did you have to promise not to use your x-ray vision on the gifts?” I teased.
A light blush tinted the reporter’s cheeks. “Yes,” she shrugged. “Years ago.”
Chuckling, I smiled at the bashful woman. “Well, I appreciate your help. I’ll pitch the idea to the board this afternoon and let you know if the idea is accepted.”
“Sounds good.”
Realizing Kara only brought her bag and jacket, my brow furrowed. “Did we have a lunch that I forgot about? Or coffee…” Flipping through my planner, I skimmed this week’s page for anything highlighted in blue.
“No, no. I was on this side of town for a story and wanted to say hi.”
“Oh, okay.” My chest warmed. She wanted to drop by just to see me. Ugh! Kara, just friends don’t do things like this. Not that I’m not happy to see you. “It’s appreciated since I know how busy both of us are this time of year.”
“I’ll always make time for you,” Kara smiled with a soft blush.
“Well, seeing you is always a welcomed surprise.”

A Chance for Christmas AU
Kara is a family blogger. The world believes her to be married with one daughter. What the world doesn't know is that her husband is actually her friend James, and her daughter Esme is actually her niece.
Kara lives in her sister's house, making the kitchen and family room her domain to film. But for all the public knows, it's Kara's house and Kara's family.
Alex loves her sister to the point of letting Esme participate, initially because Esme also loves it. But eventually it becomes less about spending time with Esme and more about the views and likes.
Just before Christmas, Kara finds out that one of the top brands in the world (Luthor Industries) is interested in sponsoring her. Turns out, Lena Luthor is a fan of Kara's blog, and has convinced her brother (her boss), that Kara would be the perfect fit.
Lex is doubtful, and so sets a seemingly impossible challenge-- he will give Kara Danvers control of the company's social media feeds on Christmas Eve. If Kara gets 2 million views, he'll give her the sponsorship. If she doesn't, well... Lena will take the fall.
Things in Kara's life are starting to unravel under the pressure of trying to get the sponsorship deal with the Luthor brand. Her family is losing patience, fully disenchanted with the vlog thing. So by the time Lena shows up to monitor the live takeover of the Luthor social media feeds, Kara is at her wit's end.
She mistakes Lena for the assistant producer she hired for the day (who never actually shows up) and pulls her inside and starts barking orders. Thus Lena is treated to a first hand look at the chaos that is behind the scenes of Kara's perfect-family schtick. When she learns the truth of Kara and James' relationship, and the fact Esme isn't even Kara's daughter, Lena nearly panics.
But in the end, she rolls with it. After all, if this test of Kara's (to get 2 million views on Christmas Eve) doesn't succeed, Lena will lose all credibility with her family, and THAT Lena will not allow.
They work together to put together a... mediocre product. They only get halfway to their viewer goal, and when their rental Santa (actually the real santa), Kara wishes aloud that she wishes to do the whole day over again. Which of course Santa makes happen.
What follows is christmas groundhog day, giving Lena and Kara (the only two who remember that Christmas Eve has already happened) the opportunity to do the day over and over again until they get it right. But no matter what they do, they always seem to fall short of the 2mil views.
Some days are better than others, some are straight disasters, but little by little, each day gets them closer to their goal, and closer to each other. They're both charming after all, and beautiful. How could they ignore the chemistry between them?
Lena also bonds with Esme. While coloring one day between shoots, Lena asks Esme if she even likes filming. Esme responds that at first she did, because it was an excuse to spend time with her favorite aunt, but now it feels like it wouldn't really matter if Esme were even in the clip at all. They don't ever really do anything together. Kara does it all herself, and brings Esme in just to get a couple takes in.
Lena also learns that James has/had a thing for Kara, but that Kara never felt the same way. He'd thought that pretending to be married on camera would bring them closer, but in the end it only pushed them farther apart, to the point that he's not even sure they're friends anymore.
Finally, FINALLY, Kara and Lena put together the perfect day. Professional decorators make the house perfect, everyone puts on their best performances, and the livestream officially hits more than 2 million views.
But the success comes at a cost. Having excluded the rest of her friends and family, they all leave the house bitterly. Even Alex, whose house Kara lives and films in, takes her family to in-law's house to spend the night.
"When we come back," Alex hisses on her way out the door, "I want you gone."
Heartbroken, Kara finally realizes what her fervor for success has cost her. Her family, the people she cherishes most in the world-- she lost sight of them. And now, having met their goal, Kara knows the day won't reset. This is the reality she will have to face tomorrow.
Or is it.
When she wakes the next morning, it's Christmas Eve again. But this time, she refuses to film she spends the day with Alex, Kelly, Esme and James. Though there's no filming, Lena comes over anyway to join them. Upon seeing this new (true) Kara, Lena surreptitiously begins to film from her phone as the family plays board games, bakes cookies, and just acts like a normal messy family.
But when Lena reveals that the feed got them the 2mil views again, Kara explodes. She feels exploited, betrayed, and doesn't listen when Lena tries to explain that the world deserves to see Kara as she truly is-- a kind soul who loves her family. She throws Lena out, and stews until Alex comes in to chat.
"It's been a long time since we've spent time like this together," Alex says quietly. "Recently, it's felt like the vlog was all you cared about-- and what really hurt the most was that it was fake. But what Lena streamed today... that was real."
Thus, now armed with her sister's blessing, Kara starts a new livestream. She bares all her secrets, tells her truth. She also vows to return to what her channel was always meant to be about.
"I stumbled into family blogging by accident, and when I did I tried to give you what you seemed to want. But the truth is, all I wanted to do was share my love of baking, cooking, and making things for my family. To share the joy of showing love. And that's what I'll be doing from now on. Just... me."
She also asks that Lena-- if she's watching-- please know that she's truly, deeply sorry.
"Please," Kara pleads to the camera. "Don't go."
She's tried calling Lena, of course, but Lena's turned her phone to do not disturb. The only call allowed to come through is her brother's, who reaches out to congratulate her.
"And don't worry," he says, "we'll be able to work with the brand change."
"What?"
"You mean you haven't seen Kara's latest video? You should. Trust me. You can thank me later."
So Lena does, and then immediately drops everything to rush back to the Danvers' home. Kara rushes out at the sound of Lena honking the horn as she pulls into the driveway, and there in her slippers she rushes into Lena's arms and plants a fervent kiss on her lips.
"I'm sorry--" Lena murmurs, eye closed as their foreheads touch.
"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have bitten your head off, I know you were just trying to help--"
"I love you."
Kara looks up with a tearful smile, her eyes sparkling with christmas lights.
"I love you too."

chapter 1: partridge
“Did you know,” Kara alights on Lena’s balcony Christmas morning with a snap of her cape, words already out of her mouth before she’s fully landed, “that partridges are ground foragers? I mean, they can fly, but still, they spend most of their time on the ground!”
Lena has been waiting by the sliding door into her loft since Kara texted a few minutes ago to say she was on her way. The blonde’s hair is windswept, her eyes sparkling despite the mild annoyance in her voice. It’s unseasonably cold in National City this week, a place where Christamasses are often 70 and sunny, and Kara’s cheeks are rosy, though Lena’s still not clear on how much her Kryptonian best friend even feels the drop in temperature.
As usual, Kara looks unfairly beautiful.
“Merry Christmas to you, too,” Lena responds dryly, breath catching as Kara strides into her personal space and begins to rub her hands vigorously up and down over the thin fabric of Lena’s long-sleeved blouse without preamble.
“Lena! Aren’t you freezing?”
“I’ve been out here for all of two minutes.”
“It’s forty degrees.” Kara hasn’t stopped rubbing, her eyes searching Lena’s face for signs of, what, frostbite?
“Kara, darling, I’m fine.” Lena stops one of Kara’s hands with her own. She stills immediately, eyes flicking to their joint touch before she looks up again, sheepish…and cute, so cute. Kara drops her hands to her sides. Regret pricks at Lena, who suddenly feels very cold indeed. Instead of shivering, she laughs. “Come on in. What were you saying about partridges?”
Kara dutifully follows her into the living room, dematerializing her suit.
“I was saying that partridges are ground foragers.”
“Yes?”
“Did you know?”
“Yes, I actually think I did know that. Lex used to hunt them.”
Kara scrunches up her nose adorably in distaste. “But they’re so cute!”
"They are." Lena tries for a straight face, with little success. “This wouldn’t have to do with the song, would it?”
“You know, I’ve wondered about that song my whole life–well, my whole Earth life–but it only just occurred to me to look it up and,” Kara puts her hands on her hips in manufactured outrage, but her pout is ruining the effect, more Superpuppy than Supergirl, "partridges don't nest in trees. A partridge would not be very happy in a tree."
"I doubt they even like pears." Lena turns her head to grin at Kara as she strolls toward the kitchen, egging her on.
"Exactly!"
The apartment is sans decorations except for a large tree that her friend had insisted on bringing by last week, bulbs and ornaments hung erratically even though Lena had carefully picked out a color scheme of dark greens and golds, baubles bought at the store in advance of Kara’s arrival and presented to the blonde with an aggrieved air that they both knew was for show. But Kara had brought a bag of ornaments, too–some plucked from her own tree, some new she’d chosen especially (“Lena, look, I couldn’t resist. It’s a microscope. And here’s a little cat wearing a Christmas bow tie…)--and Lena had been powerless to say no, even as she watched her modest decorating schema deranged by a laughing snowman, dog Santa, and surfing reindeer.
This is their dance. All these years playing the same game: Lena trying to maintain her taciturn cool facade as Kara whirled in and disrupted everything. Except now Lena is willing to admit to herself that she wants to be disrupted, that the Kara whirlwind, that all of this, all of her, is everything she's ever wanted. It had taken her five years to admit it to herself; maybe, in another five, she’d tell Kara.
"I think," Lena hedges, "it's supposed to be a religious metaphor," but Kara is already shaking her head as she pours herself a cup of coffee and mixes in copious cream and sugar, fully at home and moving around Lena's kitchen, around Lena, who's pulling biscuits from the oven, with practiced ease. A little trill goes through Lena at the domesticity of it all.
"No, no metaphors. I'm taking the song at face value, and I don't approve."
"The partridge is hardly the most asinine part of 'Twelve Days of Christmas'."
"You're right, but it's the first. It's what I'm supposed to– I mean, it's supposed to be a significant first gift, and it's a lie."
"I'm sorry, Kara." Lena chuckles, then resumes setting the table for their planned breakfast, a task she’d interrupted to stand watch at her balcony door–even though Kara was certainly capable of letting herself in.
Kara takes her coffee and flops down in front of the tree, turning her gaze to Lena incredulously.
“Are we eating at the table?”
Was that a trick question? “Yes?”
“It’s Christmas.”
"That…Is that a non sequitur?"
"It's best to eat breakfast in front of the tree on Christmas, Lena."
"Oh? It's best? According to whom, exactly?" To keep up appearances, Lena has to protest, but she's already sliding the coffee table closer to the tree, depositing her own coffee cup on a coaster.
"Actually, it's mandatory."
"Well, in that case," Lena tosses her hands up in defeat, "what choice do I have?"
Before she can backtrack for dishes and the food, Kara catches Lena's hand. For one long, ineffable moment, they just look at each other, fingers loosely tangled, Lena's heartbeat rapid, like a bird's. She thinks about those partridges, minding their own business in the high grass and then a single unfamiliar rustle, a strange scent on the breeze, sends them up, up into the air. Away to safety, maybe, but also vulnerable. Out in the open with the breeze ruffling their feathers, they're more liable to be seen, to be found, to be hurt.
Gently, Kara squeezes Lena's fingers before releasing her. Her voice takes on a serious tone. "I'm only letting you go if you promise to come back." She pauses, then adds, a smirk curling her lips, "With food. Come back with food."
And Lena does. She brings the bacon and biscuits and these delectable little egg bites she made from a Martha Stewart recipe, pleased when Kara's eyes widen in excitement. Lena settles onto the floor beside her, their bodies making multiple points of contact–arms, hips, thighs–as the blonde leans over to fill her plate.
"I guess we're the ground foragers now," Lena offers while they eat, staring into the agonizing and glorious chaos of her tree. It's a half-joke, her uneasy attempt to make normal the feeling that her heart is flying free and wild and out of her chest for all to see.
Later, they'll exchange presents, but the way Kara laughs just then, genuine and joyful, bumping Lena's shoulder with her own–that's the gift Lena's still thinking about hours later. That's the one that matters most.
To be continued...
