this is the first sort of ~journal entry~ that i've started for this blog, and i'm soooo excited about it. i believe over a year ago now i started a journey to listen to new music that i've never heard before. i called it the "500 albums challenge" where i set a goal to listen to that exact number of albums within a year. i totally flopped, haha.

i decided to not put a time limit to something like that. when i listen to music i want to enjoy it, and to never burden myself with anything that i'm already in love with. i've listen to a good number of albums already that i've jotted down thoughts on and made youtube videos about (which i'm happy to start that up again!). some i really felt driven to write about, some i only had a few words for on a couple of songs. some i didn't quite enjoy as much as i thought. but its all in good fun!

not only did i miss writing just in general, but i wanted to capture my real, authentic thoughts about the things i was hearing. and that's something that i look forward to continue doing as a creative outlet for myself as i experience and go through all of these different journeys within a number of albums.

now for my actual thoughts on the album:

disclaimer: everything i thought was written down in the moment as capturing my authentic feelings is the most important during any listening experience. that's what i've done here, and will more than likely, use this as my way of conveying my feelings during listening experiences, more like a journal.

ruthless:

kind of feels like a hug, welcoming you into a home that’s already got the tea in the hot mug waiting for you after you come in from the snow. but i’d also like to listen to this on a beach day? one of the funnest songs to sing to, btw. the celebratory horns at the end of the song are so joyful. 

carino: 

for me, carino is that girl. hearing it during the camp flagnaw stream, i was like “what is this groovy ass baseline??? i felt like i’ve heard this before” and it turns out this song was already downloaded! i kicked myself for not listening to it more, but this song has went triple platinum in my household since. such an easy going beat, with tantalizing vocals. again. the fucking baseline rips. i like the distorted vocals a lot as the horns and soft guitar strumming keeps the song steady, even though it flows gracefully on its own.  

abq:

the opening of the song makes feels warm, but distant, almost alien like. i really like how moody this is, when the beat kicks in and the singing starts. this felt really good while walking the dog, very easy. there’s a faint sound of a group of people talking in the prechorus and it kind of feels reminiscent of wind. there’s so many different sounds that elevates the softness of the song—they gave me chills. but especially the echoing kind of distorted guitar in the background. the percussion makes it feel like you’re in the room with the song, if that makes sense? 

i didn’t know the song was about anxiety until i looked into it. i was curious about what “abq” meant and turns out it stands for albuquerque, new mexico. albuquerque reminds me of high school musical. anyway, the song is about anxiety while being on the road, touring. that’s pretty cool. 

loverboy: 

the opening of this one reminded me of frank ocean. i miss him. it’s a great interlude. 

over the moon: 

love the distance that’s created with her voice, it’s very serene. but over the moon is probably one of my favorites on the ep just because of the general mood of the song. it’s like she’s saying i have nothing better to do than to be in love and happy. there’s this slow ticking in the background that makes it feel like you’re stuck in one place with this person you like, by the fireplace. you’re begging them to stay there with you, but you’re not begging begging. it’s subtle. but it’s enough to get what you want and to make them stay, so you’re happy. 

clueless: 

this one has the most striking lyric and melody combo for me. it’s a snappier song on a very laid-back project. the couple in the song are irritated. the song builds into an ethereal moment at the world “clueless” that kind of hit a switch for me. from there on the song just gets groovy as shit. it’s a moment that definitely brings on a more dancey feel.

overall:

i have revisited this album a lot since i first heard it. i naturally gravitate towards albums like this, that are really mellow and dreamy, but there's still a lot of groove there. carino is still very much a highlight for me as i can't get that bassline out of my head holy fuck. i'm definitely going to listen to their entire discography, and i can't wait to stream their set for coachella this year!
