[Review] Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (PS5)

Jet Set Radio Future 2 is here, and it's all I ever wanted.

When Team Reptile made Lethal League and—more precisely—its sequel, they did an excellent job capturing the feel and aesthetic of Sega's Jet Set Radio games in a new genre. Now they've only gone and bloody done it - made an actual Jet Set Radio homage game, and it's an absolute stunner! Specifically, this is a pitch-perfect pastiche of Jet Set Radio Future, acting as a sequel to the 2002 classic in all but name, and since that particular instalment is a personal favourite of mine, I couldn't be happier.

BRC seems to deeply understand what was great about JSRF and then faithfully and lovingly recreates it, with some new ideas and refinements to boot. In case you need catching up, it's a sort of urban street punk adventure: you get around, grind, and trick on inline skates, tag graffiti all over, contest with rival gangs, and avoid the overzealous police force. The world is colourful and detailed but a bit low-poly with a cel-shaded filter, and levels are set up as huge skatepark playgrounds. All the while a soundtrack of fresh beats including hip-hop, house, and electropop accompanies you.

In BRC the structure of story-related tasks broken up by exploration returns, the levels full of collectibles to give you new colour schemes, music tracks, graffiti designs, etc. as well as just setpieces to "platform" around. A fast-travel system helps you get between areas, some of which replay the hits of JSRF while others explore new territory like a mall complex or industrial oil rig; the setting of New Amsterdam nods to the developer's Dutch origin but in practice it feels like it would easily fit in Tokyo-to (disclaimer, I have never visited The Netherlands). In addition to skates you have skateboards and BMX, each one having slightly different manoeuvrability plus the chance to open certain doors in the game world: for example, a skateboard can trick on fire hydrants to get elevated to a handful of secret areas. This gives more of a reason to have different ones on hand but can feel like an arbitrary passkey check.

Movement is aided by the new boost pack mechanic, which gives you an enormously useful air-dash. A boost meter gives you some speed but can also freshen up trick combos and extend your manual, while it's refilled by tricking (like in Sonic Rush), so doing these cool lines and combos feeds back into movement in a satisfying way. Cans have been done away with entirely so you can tag at any time without worry, and graffiti minigames have actually been brought back from the original JSR, except here they're super quick and snappy, and your inputs determine which of your unlocked tags goes up which keeps the visuals fresh.

A handy new feature is the flip-phone menu (reminiscent of The Arcane Kids' vaguely JSR-esque Zineth). It's great for flavour but also lets you get tips from teammates or contact new recruits, check out your range of graffiti designs and how to write them, consult a persistent minimap while highlighting tag spots, or change the currently playing music. And speaking of the soundtrack, it's sublime, a heady mix and perfect tonal accompaniment that even includes three tracks from the funky uncle himself Hideki Naganuma (much like Hover before it)... and if you ask me they're some of his best.

Another way BRC expands slightly on JSRF's template is a bit more emphasis on plot, with a central mystery revolving around recently-decapitated protagonist Red, his new cyberhead, and his connections to the previous top dogs in the city's counterculture. This framing fumbles at times, but it gives more purpose to your interactions with other rudies and conflicts with the cops, and interstitial sequences between chapters lets the game reinterpret JSRF's surreal climax in a dream context.

I've been eagerly awaiting this game and as a big fan of JSRF it didn't disappoint. BRC takes everything I loved about that (now slightly creaky and inaccessible) game and gives it a fresh coat of paint. I've seen people gripe about the price and playtime but both are about on par with the game that it styles itself as a love letter to, so it would be disingenuous of me to complain about either. Better by far to celebrate what an awesome achievement this game is in recapturing a unique classic while brilliantly modernising it. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk reminds me why I love video games.

i have like a handful of thoughts about comments and reviews because of some stuff i've seen on twitter semi recently. In specific, I’ve seen some people talking about reviews, and about not leaving negative ones on published books (and one extremely Weird take about sending your negative response directly to the author instead??) but it reminded me a bit of discussions about concrit and reviews and comments on fanfiction so i wanna spell out my thoughts here

anyway the thesis about it is like...there's a major difference between "concrit", "reviews", and "comments”?

Concrit

"Concrit" is only applicable in specific situations in which you are ASKING for it. Concrit has to come from people who know what they're doing re: the medium and genre you're using AND your own personal goals for the piece, tends to be in the context of a writing workshop or something of the like, is actively sought out BEFORE completion of the product, and is used to better something that isn't finished yet.

Some people ask for concrit on the fanfiction or fanwork they put out. Most, however, do not.

Because once the piece is published, it's done. they're not going back to fix it. Concrit is no longer relevant or useful, and coming from strangers who don't know your style or desires for the piece, it's LESS than useful, because generally, they're just projecting what THEY want onto your piece and not considering your intent. 

Also, most fanwork creators? Aren’t professionals, and they aren’t trying to be. They’re having fun. You wouldn’t run up to some kids playing basketball in the park and tell them how they’re dribbling incorrectly, would you? No, because you’re not their coach, and they’re just playing around and enjoying themselves, not looking to be the next Michael Jordan. So “concrit” isn’t particularly helpful or useful to published fanworks.

Concrit is ABSOLUTELY NOT HELPFUL when applied to published books. Those authors have editors. They have agents. They have beta readers. They do not need the opinion of a random stranger on the internet who may or may not have published a book to tell them how they should have written the book that is already published and beyond the editing stage.

And for the love of ALL that is holy, don’t email the author your negative thoughts and supposed concrit??? What??? They don’t want to hear it, they didn’t ask for it, you probably aren’t qualified to give it. It isn’t helpful or useful to anyone.

Reviews

We tend to think of reviews as what we leave on fanfiction. But that’s not really true.

See, reviews serve a specific purpose. That purpose is to let people know whether or not they want to spend money on a specific product.

A movie review lets you know if that trailer you saw really is your speed and is worth buying a movie ticket. A book review tells you that that one YA novel you were super hyped for actually turned out to be really transphobic and also had clunky dialogue.

This is why I SORT of don’t agree with the idea that you should never post negative reviews. If the product is finished, published, and put out into the world, and more importantly, if it is asking for your money in order to consume it, you need a variety of reviews available to determine if you want to devote any part of your available funds to it instead of something else.

Reviews should be respectful, of course, but that doesn’t mean you can’t talk about the details that you think were executed poorly or the tropes that you personally don’t like that maybe a concerned potential reader also doesn’t like and is now grateful that they didn’t spend money buying that new fantasy novel that turned out to have bad love interest.

Also, reviews, are by nature, public. They are posted in public forums specifically for people to seek out and read, in places that are easy to find when you search for the item you want reviews for. For example, in the review sections of Goodreads to decide if you really want to buy that new regency romance, or the devoted sections of MyAnimeList to figure out if you want to devote 600 episodes worth of time to a new shonen.

If you’re writing up something about a book you just read or a movie you just saw, you aren’t making concrit: you’re writing a review.

“Reviews” then, don’t really apply to fanfiction. For one thing, you aren’t paying for a product for fanworks. The most you’re losing is your time, and honestly, you can generally tell within one paragraph of a fic if you’re going to like it or not, so you really haven’t lost much.

There are no review sites or forums for fanfiction, at least, no professional ones. Reviews on Ao3 aren’t there for the benefit of determining whether you want to read it or not. They’re not placed in a specific review forum, they’re tucked into comment threads within each specific story.

Comments

This is what actually refers to fanworks. You aren’t writing notes on how to strengthen character writing with a concrit workshop. You aren’t crafting a snappy article to describe to a potential buyer why they should or should not consume this artistic product.

Comments are solely for the benefit of the fan creator. They are threaded onto each fic, and generally aren’t expected to be read by anyone other than the creator. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone going into the comments before they read the fic to see if they should read it (though I could be wrong, of course).

Comments aren’t professional endeavors, like concrit and reviews generally are. They’re for ordinary people who want to share their thoughts on a given creation, and in the case of fanwork, a given creation that is provided to them for absolutely free, by a nonprofessional creator who is just having fun.

This is generally why people say don’t leave negative comments on fanwork. As I’ve outlined above, there are a lot of reasons why fanwork is distinct from professional work, why professional work is more beholden to commentary, and why fanwork isn’t really the place to flex your review or concrit muscles.

Comments are really, genuinely, just to tell a creator thank you for making something you enjoyed.  They don’t have to professional, they don’t require any practiced skillset, they can be left by anyone who knows how to use a keyboard. They’re for brightening the days of people who brightened yours.

The TL;DR:

Concrit is for works in process that can actively benefit from advice on how to strengthen them, offered by a qualified individual who understands what the creator needs help with the most.

Reviews are for consumers to determine what professionally produced products they want to spend their money on. Reviews can be negative, there’s nothing wrong with that, because that helps a potential reader decide what to spend their limited funds on.

Comments are for fanwork. They aren’t concrit because the fanwork is already posted and likely won’t be edited, and the creator nor the commentor likely isn’t a professional that warrants that kind of interaction. They aren’t reviews because they aren’t meant to be a means for readers to decide what to read. They’re just for saying thanks and saying what you liked.

And if you don’t like a fic? The back button is right there.

Sonic the Hedgehog Review

Whenever you see an established video game title slapped across a film poster in all its colourful, stylised font, you can't help but wince. It is only one of the obstacles that Sonic the Hedgehog would need to overcome before his big screen debut. Last year's first trailer reveal that provoked ridicule, confusion and disgust over the CGI star’s unsettlingly appearance was probably the biggest one; potentially tripping before it had a chance to stretch its legs. But a visual overhaul later, Sonic the Hedgehog is here and it continues to jump through cleanly (near enough) through the rings of expectation. Jeff Fowler’s directorial debut, adapted by screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller from the Sega video game franchise, gives you enough nostalgia for the die-hard fans, enough light-hearted fun for the kids, and minimal fart jokes for the adults.  

In the tranquil town of Green Hills, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is the extra-terrestrial hedgehog with super-speed and has remained hidden from the inattentive eyes of the local populace. James Marsden plays unsatisfied town sheriff Tom Wachowski who is looking for more excitement from his line of work. When the titular hedgehog stumbles into his garage, he immediately shoot him with a tranquillizer dart, only to then help Sonic to retrieve his lost world-teleporting rings from San Francisco. Sonic's existence has already drawn the attention of nutcase scientist Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) after an energy blast from Sonic knocked out the power along the Pacific West Coast.

A lot of attention has been put into actually making you care about what happens to the prickly blue speedster. His isolation has made him incredibly lonely, resorting to playing games of ping-pong with himself, and having to play from pitcher, to batter, to fielder on an empty baseball field. When he does beginning to interact with people, that he is an overly talkative chap, that Tom continuously complains about. Its not all void of cringy lines, but the dialogue is snappy enough and witty hum or permeates from their conversations.

Then you have Carrey, who is a loose-cannon in every sense of the word. It happily reminded me of how good he can be when Carrey is allowed to riff. His performance sturdies the film's already accepted silliness, from his twirly moustache and flailing mannerisms. It is a gamely distraction from the film's shaky plot and inconsistent characters. And Fowler keeps the movie moving at a brisk pace and includes a few scenes that are enough excitement going for it, including its own Quicksilver slowed-time chaos from X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Sonic the Hedgehog lives up to its video game character roots; fun and fast that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Review: Dreadnought

by April Daniels, audiobook narration by Natasha Soudek published by Diversion Books, audiobook edition by Audible Studios 

Song of choice: Ashby and the Oceanns—Something Better (music by @fakegamergirlcomics just seemed the right fit, especially after @naidje suggested it) Recommended meal: Slices of cheap, greasy pizza, because it’s your body and you get to choose what you put in it. But also some salad on the side, because all that oil will make you feel terrible afterwards.

I started reading Dreadnought—the first in a planned trilogy—as an mp3 audiobook, in the midst of Pride Month. As I took a 67 mile round-trip journey down to the only store that had a pair of particularly cute shoes in my size, i had a lot of time to listen to the book, to think about gender, and the ways i’m more or less fortunate compared to other people i know.

The life of protagonist Danielle Tozer is a similarly mixed bag. At the story’s outset, Danielle is hiding out behind a mall to express the one tiny bit of femininity she’s managed to secure herself while living as a closeted trans girl. From her hiding spot, she witnesses the fallout of the final battle between a supervillain and the beloved superhero Dreadnought—which sends Dreadnought crashing at Danny’s feet. His dying act is to pass on the “mantle” of his powers to her, and like every Dreadnought before her, Danielle is transformed into her ultimate physical ideal. Superhuman strength and speed, resistance to injury to the point of immunity to small arms fire, the ability to fly...

...oh, and she’s given a body that outwardly appears to be that of a cisgender girl. It’s the ultimate transition, no need for pills, patches, or injections. But it comes with complications.

And here’s where it gets tricky to recommend Dreadnought. See, April Daniels is an excellent writer, her prose is snappy and the balance between dialogue and narrative is just right. The narration by Soudek makes it even better, with talented voice acting bringing even nameless minor characters alive as unique individuals. But it’s also a painful story; for every soaring up, there’s crashing down that follows almost immediately after. Danny lives with a a verbally abusive homophobic father and a meek mother who prefers the illusion of familial integrity to acknowledgement of just how fucked up things are, and just how much and how long Danny has been hurting. Unable to hide her new body, Danny leans into it, and is stunned to face all kinds of bigotry. As she struggles to understand her new powers and keep them secret, she meets up with people representing many aspects of the superheroic world: the “white capes” who cooperate with local governments and enjoy popular support and municipal stipends, and the street-level “gray cape” vigilantes.

There are points in the story when it can get really painful to follow Danielle’s journey, especially if you’ve ever faced the kind of hatred she does, just for how she was born. In particular, Graywytch, a magical “superhero” and ally to the previous Dreadnought, stands out as an openly hateful trans-exclusionary “feminist”. In fact, in spite of how violently bigoted and blatantly hypocritical Graywitch’s dialogue is, it’s actually toned down from quotes of real-life statements the author encountered.

But all of this also makes Danielle’s triumphs sweeter, and her endurance in the face of adversity more relatably human than superhuman. It also allows her to serve well as a stand-in for transgender readers looking to find someone relatable among superheroes. In those respects and many others, Dreadnought is a much-needed starting point for trans inclusion in the superhero genre.

There are weak points, mind; as a consequence of needing to set up a familiar world for Danielle to inhabit, one that does not require too much introduction and does not take over the plot on its own, the setting can feel kind of cookie-cutter. The history of superheroics dates back only as far as WWII, and the scope of those powers is familiar to fans of Marvel & DC. Several characters feel like they are designed to fit into superheroic tropes, winding up flat on the page; the characterization of the relationship between supers and magic in particular felt like the same old territory retrod many times over by the comics.

These weak points are minor quibbles, however. They don’t detract from the virtues of the story, and they didn’t ever keep me from being so excited to finish listening that i wound up borrowing a library copy of the print version and skipping ahead while i was away from my car stereo. Oh, and ordering a copy of the second book, Sovereign.

Adventures of Superman #504 (September 1993)

REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN! The three weakest Supermen team up to take on the most ridiculously overpowered one! Last issue ended with Superboy, the Man of Steel, and the long-haired Man in Black flying towards Coast City (or what used to be Coast City), and this one starts with... the same thing, because it's a long-ass trip. At least they use this time to ponder on important matters.

When they finally reach the Cyborg Superman's city-wide robo fortress, the Man in Black loots some giant guns and ammo from an alien mook. You know, just in case you forgot this comic came out in the '90s.

(Needs more pouches, though.)

While trying to hide from the 800 aliens shooting at them, the Super-Trio bump into a giant missile that's about to be launched into Metropolis. The Cyborg Superman wants to nuke the city and replace it with another giant engine, as part of his plan to turn the Earth into a massive evil spaceship (Warworld 2.0). While the Men (in Black and Steel) continue infiltrating the fortress, Superboy manages to latch on to the missile to try to stop it from reaching its destination. It's not an easy task, but after a Spider-Man #33-esque effort...

...the Kid manages to change the missile's trajectory, taking it away from Metropolis. He saved the city! And then the missile blows up anyway, right in his face. Good thing he wasn't wearing his cool jacket in these pages, because there's no way it could have survived that one. It remains to be seen if HE did.

Character-Watch:

OK, he did. I seriously feel like turning that missile is Superboy's "Spider-Man lifting the rubble" moment. He's trapped in an impossible situation and doubts himself, but then gets his shit together and pulls it off because he has no choice. It's interesting that Karl Kesel made the Kid particularly punny and vapid at the start of this issue, almost like he was daring us to be annoyed by him, only to level him up at the end. I bet a lot of Superboy haters were converted right here.

Plotline-Watch:

Superboy's Platonic Friend Tana Moon breaks down and cries on camera about Superboy's sacrifice, probably earning a juicy raise in the process.

When we get to Superboy #60 (the kickass “Hyper-Tension!” storyline), someone remind me to check my suspicion that the page with the big multiverse-crossing missile looks exactly like the page with the regular missile in this issue.

There’s a quick cameo by journalist Jack Ryder (secretly The Creeper) as a talking head on Lois Lane’s TV, alongside Superboy’s manager Rex Leech and one of the wacky Superman cultists who paint their face like the Cyborg. Look at this guy. He shaved his head but only painted the face part? Come on man, you either commit to it or you don’t!

In Engine City, Mongul gets snappy with the Cyborg Superman again, and again gets humiliated in front of everyone (Cyborg calls him a “dog”). Why do you do this to yourself? Dump him, girl!

A robot sniper almost headshots the Man in Black, only for some invisible force to yank his gun at the last moment. Hmmm. In unrelated news, Don Sparrow says: "Interesting note that Luthor II can’t find Supergirl -- I wonder where she is?" Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Don also points out: "The Man in Black asks if he can call John Henry ‘Steel’ because the Man of Steel is too much of a mouthful on their mission, setting up for his permanent name change." Steel should have said "OK, then I'll call you Black."

Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):

We start with the cover, and it has a unique heritage.  This cover was sketched and laid out by Karl Kesel, penciled by Tom Grummett, and then inked by Doug Hazlewood, and it’s a good, accurate description of what we find in the issue—our three Supermen fighting their way into Engine City.  Added points for bringing up the pre-Crisis concept of the Superman Revenge Squad, which was actually a grouping of Superman rogues (an updated version would appear in a few years). Weirdly, editorial is still seeming to hide the Fabio-hair on Superman proper on the covers—I wonder what that’s about!

Inside the book we get our first look at a trait that defines this issue visually: grease-pencil clouds!

Max pointed this out to me when we were chatting about the issue, and I think he’s right—this book doesn’t look like it was inked in Hazlewood’s usual way.  It’s 1993, so it’s hard to imagine they could pull off “digital inking”, the practice of just darkening the pencils, but we see a pencil-like texture so often in this issue, a guy could begin to wonder if that’s maybe what they’re up to.  So for the whole issue, there is a slightly looser, rushed feel, especially in the backgrounds.  Then on the credits page, we notice a special thanks for Mark Heike—who google reveals to me is a comic artist in his own right.  Maybe he pitched in with some semi-credited inks? Smokey clouds aside, it’s another nice splash, with the returned Superman leading the charge.

A common critique of Tom Grummett’s Superman is that the way his face is drawn can look a little Conan-like, and the new long hair doesn’t help that, though in these early pages Superman is looking very on-model and handsome.

The fight (and flight) choreography as the Superman trio enters Engine City airspace is well done, and while it couldn’t be more 90s if it tried, the image of Superman double-fisting blasters and ammo belts is pretty awesome, I must say. Plus, Superboy’s assessment that it’s “slammin’” might replace Robin’s “totally rad!” as a new catch-phrase in these reviews.

The reveal of the giant rocket has a great sense of scale (and is another example of pencil-like lines still popping up on finished art).  Great sound effect there, too.

As Superboy heroically climbs up the rocket, Tom and co give a great sense of the speed, and g-forces the kid is experiencing.  And there is such a great sense of drama in these last pages, as the celebrations for the missile having missed Metropolis quickly turn to grief, as Superboy is for sure, definitely dead. [Max: Forever.]

STRAY OBSERVATIONS:

Interesting to hear Steel use the phrase “a bursting shell” in relation to piercing Superman’s skin, a callback to Action #1’s description of Superman’s invulnerability, which apparently was known in-universe as well.

I love how unequivocally “Superman” they write the Man in Black in these pages.  On his first day back to civilization, he’s already saying he’d gladly die again in order to stop Warworld from taking over Earth.  Goosebumps, man!

Does Kesel have dogs on the brain?  First Henshaw calls Mongul a dog (ouch) and then just one panel later, Superboy makes his Dalmatian joke. (Note: Dalmatian is actually misspelled in the comic!) [Max: “Dalmation” does sound like some sort of Jack Kirby thing. Maybe it’s something the Kid saw at Cadmus?]

Superboy is pretty much a non-stop joke machine in these pages, as just about every panel he’s in, he’s cracking wise, so it’s hard to highlight all of them.  Some are better than others—I get that hearing the phrase “full frontal” puts Michelle Pfeiffer into his head, but “full frontal assault” just isn’t sexy. [Max: You know, 26 years later, I JUST got that one.]

GODWATCH: Steel invokes “God” when he thinks Superboy might have been burnt up in the rocket launch, and then a page later, Superman does the same when he sees the charred corpses of Henshaw’s minions. [Max: Also, I don’t think I caught the significance of John Henry’s “I know” as a kid.]

I love Superboy’s self-talk as he climbs the missile, particularly the Caddyshack-like “crowd goes wild”.  This is exactly how a kid his age would act in that crazy moment.

Historically speaking, budget Windows laptops are full of compromises: usually they have poor displays, sluggish performance, or mediocre construction. In particular, slow performance - attributed to entry-level processors combined with the resource-heavy Windows operating system - has allowed Chromebooks to gain traction in the budget space. This is despite Windows-powered machines having support for a wider legacy applications and programs.

Luckily, the Chuwi HeroBook seems to be an exception to the norm - breaking free from all the usual issues I’ve encountered with cheaper Windows laptops. To keep things short: for $200, this is one of the most consistent laptops you’ll find - performance is surprisingly quick for basic tasks, and it has very little compromises.

Positives:

1) Design - Although the body of the laptop is made out of plastic, it feels solid and dark grey color could pass as a much more expensive model. I was delighted to see that the lid can be opened using just one hand (a detail usually only flagship devices have). The weight is well balanced, and the hinge mechanism feels smooth. The profile is slim, and makes the laptop easy to travel with.

2) Input - The keyboard takes advantage of the entire width of the laptop, resulting in larger keys than most 14” options. Overall, there’s a good amount of tactile feedback from the keys, making it a great choice for writing longer docs,  even though the keys aren’t backlit.

The touchpad, which measures over 5”, is super spacious. Gone are the days of tiny trackpads on cheap netbooks - this one allows for comfortable scrolling and multi-touch gestures.

3) Display - For the price, most laptops have a TN panel at HD (720p) resolution. Chuwi instead opted for a FHD (1080p) IPS screen, which means wide viewing angles and sharp looking details. More importantly, the screen is matte, which means I was able to still use it in challenging lightning conditions, as it doesn’t glare as much as glossy finishes. Overall, it’s a great panel, even though it’s not a touchscreen.

4) Performance - The processor inside is the Intel X5-E8000. Although it’s part of the Intel Atom family, don’t confuse it with the more commonly used Z8350. Whereas the Z8350 struggles on even the lightest tasks, the E8000 is one of the higher end chips in the Atom series. In benchmarks and real-world usage, I found it closer to an Intel Celeron in performance. Although it’s still not a powerhouse, web browsing is silky smooth (3-4 tabs open), system navigation is snappy, and boot-up times are almost instantaneous. It’s a noticeable step forward in speed.

Other components include 4GB RAM and 64GB storage (other models for the price usually have only 32GB system storage).

Reception is also above average. I found that in areas where other budget laptops would disconnect from Wi-Fi, this laptop still held onto the signal. This is essential, because a laptop can have blazing fast internals, but it’s only as good as it’s weakest link. A poor Wi-Fi antenna can result in unusable web browsing, so it's great that Chuwi have put in extra effort on this component. And yes, there’s Bluetooth as well!

5) Battery life - One benefit of an Atom family, is that they are really energy efficient (and fanless). On a full charge, this laptop can last me approx. 9 hours of use. For a 14” device, I think this is pretty impressive, and gets me through 1-2 days of use before I need to recharge it.

6) Clean version of Windows 10 Home installed (fully activated)

Negatives:

1) Charger is a proprietary round plug (Chuwi’s other devices have shifted to USB-C, which I think is a more convenient design).

2) Back in the days of Windows 7, home edition (especially laptops geared towards students) would often include a version of Microsoft Word/Office for free. On here, it’s simply a trial of Office - although you could always use OpenOffice or Google Docs in-stead.

3) 4GB Ram is good for an entry-level laptop, but for heavier multitasking (or programs like Photoshop/video editing) it won’t be the fastest experience (be reasonable with these expectations)

4) Could add some more metal/aluminum parts to the construction in a future model

Conclusion:

Overall, the Chuwi HeroBook is an impressive showing. Despite the low price, it’s managed to get all the essentials right - from solid hardware, stable performance, to a long lasting battery. Areas of improvement are minor and easy to forgive at the price; making this my favorite budget Windows laptop I've purchased thus far!

Here's everything you need to know about it.📷 REALME NARZO 30A REVIEW: PERFORMANCE The Realme 30A is surprisingly good enough for most tasks that you throw at it and the primary reason for this is definitely its Helio G85 chipset that's paired with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This chipset is built using a 12nm process and has been used previously by Realme on the Narzo 20 launched last year.The chipset features an octa-core CPU that uses two ARM Cortex-A75 performance cores clocked at 2.0GHz for heavy lifting and six ARM Cortex-A55 efficiency cores running at 1.8GHz for apps of daily use. At the time of its launch, this chipset was touted to be one for mobile gaming on a budget, and even in 2021, it manages to live up to the promise. While the CPU definitely helps with running heavy-duty games, it's the ARM Mali-G52 GPU that does most of the rendering graphics. The GPU can boost up to 1Ghz for peak performance which helps provides a responsive user-experience while running games. But more on gaming later, let's first look at a few scores to see how the device does at synthetic benchmarks.This Helio G85 SoC powered device scored a decent 201637 on AnTuTu and when compared to the competition in its segment clocked an impressive 350 in the single-core test of Geekbench 5 and 1283 in the benchmark's multicore test. As for Asphalt 9 Legends, the median was 30 FPS at stability of 99 per cent. Considering we're testing a budget segment device, these numbers look pretty impressive.These results also fell in line with our general experience of using the device in day-to-day life as the Realme Narzo 30A felt snappy and responsive for most parts. Apps and games were quick to fire up, with the device rarely feeling sluggish or turning unresponsive.As we found out during our review, the chipset can handle games like Call of Duty well at the highest available medium graphics settings with a few other toggles for visuals turned on. While the game initially recommends the low graphics preset for the device, we found it

to work without any hitches at the higher graphics setting also. Realme UI also brings in 11 new wallpapers inspired by natural elements.Further, it also brings with itself support for features like Dual Mode Music Share which enables output of audio through two different devices at the same time. For this, the user can connect a pair of wireless earbuds and wired earphones to share audio with a friend. Apart from this, this Android 10-based copy of Realme UI also brings with itself support for features such as Focus Mode and Dark Mode. Overall, all these elements come together to provide a good experience on what is essentially a budget segment device.📷 REALME NARZO 30A REVIEW: DESIGN AND DISPLAY Realme 30A offers an industrious design. However, the use of a sporty diagonal stripe pattern on the back panel helps make the device look a little sporty. This will be appreciated by gamers. The back panel also uses a Pixel-like dual finish scheme, where this striped design covering almost 70 per cent of the back, and the upper end of the phone using a more subtle solid black again in matter finish. This section also houses the phone's square camera set-up and round fingerprint scanner. Both look well designed, with the former protruding very little from the back panel.All the buttons of use are on the right of the device, with the volume and power button working as expected and feeling tactile and responsive. The phone's speaker grille is placed at the bottom which can be muffled while playing games. Moving on to the display, the front of the phone uses a 6.5-inch panel with support for HD+ resolution (720x1600 pixels). The display also promises a decent pixel density of 269ppi and high peak brightness of 570 nits, although when we measured it, the display topped out at 419 nits. In the real world, this panel does get plenty bright for use even under direct sunlight, however, its feels lacking in clarity because of the low resolution it runs at.The Realme Narzo 30A flaunts an average screen-to-body ratio of 88.7 per cent with some amount of bezels remaining visible at the chin of the display. At the top, and the sides there's little in the way of bezels to take you away from the experience, however, we do have a small water-drop notch that houses the phone's front camera.Despite weighing 207 grams, the Narzo 30A doesn't feel too heavy in the hand with the weight appearing to be evenly balanced across the device. The phone also feels quite compact in the hand, especially if you are moving from a bigger smartphone. Overall, it's a well-built device that feels nice in the hand and does just about enough to look appealing to the eye. 📷 REALME NARZO 30A REVIEW: BATTERY One of the most impressive things about the Realme Narzo 30A is its battery life. The phone is backed by a massive 6000mAh battery pack which provides very good battery life. On average, the phone can easily last a day and a half on moderate use with only gaming draining the battery of the device fast. During our review, we found the phone to lose about 7 per cent charge after a 30-minute session of Call of Duty Mobile when the phone was set at full brightness and audio played through the device's speakers. We also received similar battery results for Asphalt 9 Legends.But when it did run out of charge, the battery of the phone

took some time to charge as the device comes with support for only 18W fast charging. At this speed, the Narzo 30A takes over 3 hours for a complete charge.
