I've seen your posts about weird representation of society (regarding the "natural order of things") in xenofiction, especially in lion king, so I wanted to ask:

could you recommend any xenofiction media that has all (or most of the) animal species sapient? Or is the only solution to make just one or two species sapient while the others (especially prey) are plain animals?

Really sorry if you've seen this ask from me before - my account had a weird laggy period when I couldn't send or receive messages and asks, so I don't know if you got the previous one! I just know that now it's fixed so I double all the asks sent haha

Honestly I'm not totally sure! If any 3rd person has some good recommendations for "every being is alive" xenofiction types, feel free to weigh in.

If you want to jump in with me though, I am following the webcomic Africa. It updates every Wednesday. Africa is about a mother Leopard on the verge of a great ecological disaster, the relationship between her children and the animals around her, and the strength of both instinct and choice as the characters face an uncertain future.

Since it's ongoing, I still don't know how it's going to end and can't judge it as a full work! But it's absolutely fascinating and I think the author is doing a fantastic job so far. Bonus points for the way it portrays humans, btw.

No more spoilers though, if you're interested, it's on Webtoons.

(I'm also planning to read Oren's Forge soon. Ask me about it again in a few months over on Bonebabbles and I'll give you my thoughts)

As an aside though, funny you mention it because like... ever since I was a kid I've had a story I want to tell with the premise. It's a scintilla I've kept close to me for well over a decade but haven't done anything official with. So this is actually a theme I've thought about a lot.

It's rare to see it done well though because like... its very premise butts heads with reality. The "natural order" that an animal follows is not something it moralizes. A tiger doesn't have the capacity to think about how fucked up it is to kill to stay alive, the deer doesn't know that if its population isn't controlled it will destroy the forest.

They're animals. They don't HAVE that agency. Your dog does not care about being sterilized. A snake doesn't differentiate between a pinky and an adult mouse except in terms of if it will fit in its mouth. But the minute you put human morality in there... they have the ability to reason, create and agree on the rules of a society, make choices about MORALITY.

If nothing is going to change about their world, you just end up putting human arguments about "natural order" in their mouths and, well... start telling a parable justifying this "natural order."

(Genuine) Does what I'm saying make sense? Animals DON'T rationalize or negotiate. HUMANS do.

So the minute you're approaching a world with that logic, like it or not, you are invoking those "arguments from nature." And you're putting them in a being that is not fully an animal or a human, but an anthropomorphic mix which CAN rationalize but WON'T make an effort to change their world.

(Which is why tbh the best examples i know of are works with a theme of "change.")

OH WAIT I also remember another that's interesting!! Leafy: Hen into the Wild actually has a fascinating take on it. It's not interested in "moralizing" or really being about an animal society. It's a very emotional sort of movie, and it's about joys in adversity, the freedom that choice gives you, how bad things are going to happen and you can never completely prevent them.

INTENSE movie emotionally, the ending will wreck you (especially in the English translation which leaves out a really important theme making it feel abrupt x_x) but it's really good. Check that one out.

OH and also You Are Umasou. That one has more pitfalls imo (it does try to moralize a bit) but it's super unique as a movie. And is about dinosaurs.

Lethal Company but Samus is broke and looking for work.

The first time I saw Lethal Company, it was a thumbnail on a YouTube video. Mistaking it for some sort of Metroid thing, I watched it. I'm not disappointed with its influx in popularity.

Some minor ideas for Samus:

The arm cannon can shoot (duh) but it drains the battery with every use. Works like a exactly like a shotgun.

It can be recharged just like the walkies and flash lights on board the ship. You get a max of five shots before needing to recharge.

Because you essentially have a ranged shovel, you can only carry 3 smaller items that don't require two hands. Well, she could but she wouldn't be able to shoot.

Katale and Rudyard but as little crime babies. Since he's known her for a while and just thought she looked like a little street thug despite being higher ranking than him in the crime organization at first, the cat-ear hairstyle was just A Thing for her. And it spawned the nickname he would use in private of "Kitty" and even when she grows her hair out and he grays even more he still calls her Kitty in private. They're literally just bffs who do crime and what more can you want of them??

we tabletopped!! and had, if i may be so bold, an excellent time. my very very first time gm-ing/overseeing any of this so my incredibly convoluted rules spreadsheets paid off. my first ingame terrain setup was way, way too intensive and made my players computers belch black smoke, so i've figured out a cute little work around with tiles and imported furniture

isn't it adorable! easy to chop and change between games too. pictured are the player characters, sharon (the sexiest ghoul in the world), hello nurse (robot, full of contempt) and who can forget. Deez. yes as in that.

my opening screed was pre-written and said out loud with my face, so if you want a scraping more dead man talking/dead woman walking prose, here's some. it's the general outline of how the game started before i winged it for multiple hours

War. The Great War, the greatest to only last two hours. The United States no longer exists. You don’t know how the rest of the world fared, or if there’s any rest of the world left. But that’s ancient history to you. Two-hundred and eleven years, to be exact.  The year is 2288. Living in the wastes of postwar America is a difficult prospect, and you’ve made your way north to Massachusetts to stake your claim in Diamond City, one of the few places on the East Coast that can still, in fact, be called a city. But it’s a long, difficult journey, and friendly company is hard to come by. On your way, you’ve come across travellers with the same idea, and nobody has killed you just yet. At this moment, you’re in Quincy, just south of the Diamond, in a run-down Irish pub. On a good day, you could be there by sundown. You know better than to expect good days. You’re drinking with your new friends when you overhear some talk from the table beside you: Diamond City has a toll for non-traders. As a matter of insurance after some trouble inside. It's a toll none of you can cover.  One hundred caps per head. Upfront. You’re stranded in an Irish pub that wasn’t made any worse by the nukes.  You need money.  And you need it now.

Does zombie mob have fangs? When he's cured would still have them? Also how strong is zombie mob compared to human mob?

i like to pronounce fangs in my art bc it's fun and i think it looks cool but zombie mob doesn't actually have bigger or sharper canines than humans do. it's the Bite that's dangerous, not the sharp teeth, and that's not just because a zombie bite can turn you*

zombie mob is Very strong! ritsu first discovered this when trying to gently (and then with more oomph) push him down onto blankets to get him to sleep and it was basically impossible to even budge him, no matter how much strength behind it he applied—if mob doesn't wanna lie down, He Simply Won't <3

ritsu was reminded of this later, during the incident where tome was swarmed and mob defended her. during the fight mob had grabbed one of the zombie's heads and slammed it into the wall of a nearby trailer and the dent it made,,, let's just say that was Not caused by human levels of strength.

*after that ^ fight, ritsu came to the realization that zombie jaw strength is Wicked. they can bite down on metal and bend it if they wish—if they wanted to break bone with a bite, they could do so. mob was Incredibly lucky he got away with as few wounds as he did during that quarrel; the ones in his arm are Bone Deep and if that same level of strength had been applied to his neck, it woulda ended everything in a snap

important to note that bc he's prolly one of the healthiest zombies out there, that also means he's not as shaky as the others from starvation—zombie mob could potentially have a lot of strength underneath that docile nature, more than most zombies could muster up

luckily, ritsu has never been on the receiving end of mob's new abilities, but that also means he's largely in the dark about what he's capable of. mob never rly uses his strength outside of fights, and when ritsu tries to get him to lift something heavy, mob just kinda stares at him and then gets distracted by a bee. it's very hard to utilize any advantages his brother may give him in surviving, and ritsu doesn't wanna treat him like some servant, so he largely forgets about his strength until it's used in very dangerous close calls
