Read the Yuuji curse fic and i am EATING YOUR WALLLLLSSSSS MY SKRUNKLIES
Okay but like. The potential of Yuuji-Kenjaku partnership au. The dynamic shift between picture perfectly self-serving sorcerer Sukuna and twisted, loving King of Curses Yuuji.
Maybe Suguru's faction is waylaid early on by a stranger with stitches lining their forehead, because they heard that a member of Suguru's family was a girl from the countryside with a penchant for dolls. Suguru can't focus on those damn monkeys or even Jujutsu Society anymore because some bastard is working with filthy "intelligent" curses and kidnapped Mimiko. That's just as unforgivable as being the reason those curses exist in the first place. So Suguru is still around to cause problems, maybe.
Either way, years later, "Kugisaki Nobara" swaggers into Ryomen Sukuna and Uruame's first year class at Tokyo Tech.
And you know. Hey. What if. While Maki was still born with nothing. Mai was born a year later with Ten Shadows. Consider toxic, tragic, doomed since conception Nobamaki in the midst of clawing for someone else they can't bear to live without.
And Megumi gets to trans his gender cuz that's always fun
Anyways these are all just ideas since I have self-inflicted brainrot now jdfhskdl
Omg sorry, have had a hectic few days but ANON ANON COME BACK YOU CAN'T JUST SAY THIS AND THEN LEAVE OMG YOU'RE INFECTING ME WITH BRAIN ROT !!!!!
Yuuji being the King of Curses, but specifically it stemming from how much he loves Megumi and Nobara. Man hang on a second.... hang on second !!!!! Like we all know I adore the whole "love is the most twisted curse of all" and so that being reflected in the King of Curses... Yeah, that hits.
Also Yuuji and Kenjaku having a partnership is really interesting too! Because like canonically, Kenjaku just kinda did things without really consulting Sukuna (or at least, that's what seems to be implied) so Yuuji working with them specifically because he doesn't just want to be incarnated again, but so Megumi and Nobara can be... Making sure they have suitable vessels and bodies.... It would be a super interesting dynamic between them! Kenjaku working to make/find those bodies for all of them
And Kenjaku deciding to go after Mimiko is so fun. It creates such a messy conflict for Geto, which in turn affects Gojo, and would also spiral into the Yuta and Rika consolation if Geto isn't as focused on him because he's preoccupied with Mimiko.
Kenjaku likely wouldn't incarnate Nobara without knowing they could incarnate Megumi and Yuuji. One of them by themselves likely wouldn't mean the most stable incarnated curse! But Kenjaku having Sukuna for Yuuji, and having heard about Mai, knowing if they can get their hands on her, she's likely to be a good vessel for Megumi. So they make the decision to incarnate her in Mimiko once they have their hands on her. Mimiko growing up already having Nobara incarnated in her, Nobara developing a fondness for her vessel because she sees herself in this girl. Oh, it would be such an interesting dynamic!
Forgive me, I'm bouncing all over the place, but the implications of Uraume and Sukuna with this being a role swap AU! I'm not sure if this is what you intended, but where my brain is going, is Sukuna being in a similar position as Yuuji is in canon, with him being created specifically to be Yuuji's vessel. But instead of being separated from jujutsu society, growing up in it, being involved in it, as you said, being a picture perfect cutthroat sorcerer. Maybe a bastard child from one of the big three clans? Being connected with them, but looked down upon. Feel like it would be interesting circumstances for him, with Uraume being what feels like his one true ally. Uraume being the one to find the cursed object that allows Yuuji to be incarnated in Sukuna. Sukuna deciding to consume it because he wants more power. And them being enrolled in Tokyo Tech!!! Making them Gojo's students!!! MM. Yeah. Yeah, I'm having a lot of thoughts about that
So Yuuji incarnates in Sukuna, and Kenjaku releases Nobara/Mimiko into the world so she can be enrolled in Tokyo Tech and be by Yuuji's side once again.
Gojo now suddenly having access to Geto's missing adopted daughter, but not realizing it.
And then. Ugh. The Zenins. I'm obsessed with that little plot thread like you don't even know!!! Maki being enrolled at Tokyo Tech, and a year later, Mai is enrolled in Kyoto. Maybe Nobara originally decides to get close to Maki so she hopefully has a chance to get to Mai so they can use her to incarnate Megumi. That's the plan after all! But it's difficult to get access to a Zenin. Kenjaku hasn't been able to manage it yet, but now that Nobara and Yuuji have incarnated in their vessels (even if Nobara is essentially sharing a body, and Sukuna is able to repress Yuuji) they decide it's up to them now to get Megumi's vessel. It's not right without him! But Nobara gets attached to Maki. Maki gets attached to Nobara. Feelings develop, and Nobara begins the miserable spiral of desperately needing Megumi's vessel. Everything pales in comparison to that. She won't give up on it just because she's developed feelings, but that doesn't mean she doesn't start to feel guilt for it. It's the first time she's felt guilt in a long time, and Yuuji is having a difficult time understanding her feelings. After all, this is for Megumi. Nothing matters except that!
But they're finally able to get access to Mai, maybe during the exchange event. Maybe that was the plan the curses worked on for that rather than stealing the fingers as it was in canon. So Megumi is able to incarnate in Mai, and Maki is enraged and hurt. Yeah. Yeah
I am.... so sorry, I just fucking ran with this, it's just!!! Such a fun and interesting concept for an AU and my brain is EATING IT!!!!!

Yep, this is the same anon who sent hcs about Rika & Tulip (also about Nemona and Spectrier as well). Thank you for the praise; I usually apologize because I rather NOT try to irritate you by sending either too many asks or too long asks (since I assume you were busy with other things to do; keep up the good work with the doodle art requests; they are so cute!) I adore reading though your headcanons; they are SO great to read about [they're better than mine :) ]. I wanted to add a few things to the last set of hcs I sent.
I paired up Tulip and Galarian Rapidash because GR is part Psychic type and Tulip is the Psychic type Gym Leader of Paldea.
I realized that Miriam's hair and Galarian Rapidash's mane have similar colors and patterns with each other. They match really well with their white coats too (Miriam's nursing coat and GR's coat hair).
Say, do you mind adding/writing a list of headcanons about Tulip and her Galarian Rapidashs (make sure to include some about Dendra and Miriam too). I adore reading though all the headcanons you wrote so far, especially the ones of long length. If not, that's fine. Hope the week is swell for you from now on.
Hi sorry this took so long idk shit about horses so I was sitting there trying to think of things and was drawing blanks for a hot minute. Anyway.
Everyone assumes Tulip is a city slicker and wouldn't be into the amnt of work needed to care for one horse nevermind that many. And while she does have stablehands for that because she's too busy to do it herself most of the time, she is actually pretty well versed in their care
She can, has, and will continue to doll up the Rapidash(es? idk the plural). Whatever cosmetics she uses also apply to pokemon so she uses a variety of creams and dyes and gels to style their hair and add a lil extra ~pizazz~
Dressage queen. idk anything ABOUT dressage but just imagine
Dendra keeps trying to convince them all to race. Tulip and Miriam aren't super thrilled about the idea
Miriam once had a really bad day at work and immediately went to Tulip's for a vent session and joyride. They became the first women in Paldean history to bareback ride a Rapidash while both wearing skirts and heels
Dendra got a cowboy hat to wear while riding them around. Tulip hates it
Dendra really really wants to bring them to the academy to introduce Galarian forms to the students. Miriam isn't a huge fan of this because she doesn't think allowing children anywhere near giant skittish pokemon with swords on their heads is a good idea

My niece's new Bluey onesie I bought her came so I've got cute little babu on my mind now so take these little Big Sister Poppy headcanons 🥺
She insisted on having a little welcoming party for when her new sibling and mom came home from the hospital. She drew the banner and blew the balloons herself— okay her grandpa blew a majority of the balloons up with an air pump BUT she blew some up herself so that counts!— she also gathered all her favorite plushies up and set them up by the living room mantel to greet them too. She wasn't allowed to let her pokemon out to see them just yet, she was told to wait until the baby was adjusted better as to not overwhelm or scare them.
She was too little to go in the hospital room to see them or hold them at first, so the first time she met and held them was when they got home. And she was so excited! But also a little scared. She's never held a baby before, what if she's too little to hold them at home, too? But no worries, mom came to the rescue and helped her keep their head supported and everything!
After she got the hang of holding them, she didn't wanna let go. She fell in love with her baby sibling, she swore to protect them like a big sister should. She promised she'd even teach them how to battle and play all sorts of games, too.
The next time she came into the league office, she dragged her dad inside with her when he was only meant to drop her off. She pulled him along to the breakroom where the others would be so he could show everyone her new little sibling. He shows everyone a photo of Poppy laying in bed with her mom and sibling. Poppy laughs when Hassel breaks down at the already strong family bond. Rika and Larry just give a genuine congratulations. As Geeta is her aunt, she's already met the baby, but Poppy still insisted she see the picture anyway. Geeta immediately asked her brother in law to send her that picture lol
It isn't all super cool and fun, Poppy discovered. The baby cries a lot and keeps her parents up a lot, so they're kinda cranky in the morning when they don't mean to be. And Poppy hasnt been sleeping well, either. But she gets afternoon naps still so it really hasn't affected her much. It's just kind of mildly annoying.
She knows they're not only enough to play yet, but she still tries to include them in her games. Just little ones with her dolls. Sometimes she brings her reading homework into the nursery, while her mom is in there, and reads to them(to the best of her ability).
When she's much older, Poppy remains a good and close big sister to her sibling. She indeed teaches them how to battle like she promised. She even helped them catch their first pokemon.

More than 15 episodes in, Super Doll Licca is... baffling.
It's finally been established that what the villains are after is to put Rika on the throne in order to save their homeland.
Now, their method, kidnapping, is wrong, especially since they haven't even tried asking nicely.
But what confounds me is that the heroes, the Doll Knights, don't even seem to care that their homeland is in danger. They want to stop the villains from kidnapping Rika to save it... but they don't have an alternative plan... and they haven't told Rika anything.
If Rika had said she didn't want to be queen and they were fighting to defend her choice, I could understand that. But they have never even presented the option to her. It seems like they are totally okay with their homeland disappearing. Which would make them worse than the villains.
Actually, for several episodes, I wondered if the Doll Knights even had free will, or if they were automata who only existed to save the princess from danger and were incapable of anything else. This would explain a lot, but Licca did once ask Rika's grandmother if she was feeling okay, which seems to indicate that she is capable of independent thought.
So the villains are the only ones trying to solve a real problem, the heroes come off as completely callous, devoid of compassion as well as personality, and the protagonist is a damsel in distress who can't do anything for herself besides ask to be rescued.
Oh, and the protagonist's best friend constantly encourages her to pursue a crush on an adult man (I forget her exact age, but I think she is younger than high-school-aged).
It's pretty bad!

Just beat Tulip's gym and i was a bit tiny worried because i had very few super effective moves to use against psychic types. I also went into the gym challenge thinking it was a fairy type gym cuz of her design but it went pretty smoothly.
The actual gym fight itself? Did not go as smoothly. I led with Primavero cuz he has bug and dark type moves on him but he took a a lot of damage from the Gardevoir Tulip had so i had to fall back on my other pokemon. I used Seraphine but she ended up on low health so after a bit of me sitting there worrying about who to use i sent out Coolatta against her last pokemon. Coolatta managed to get its health down a bit and survived quite a few turns. I used one of those to heal Primavero back up to full health. I couldn't swap Primavero back in cuz the moonblast was gonna hurt too bad. And i didn't want to just swap to Unagi or Titania to try and slowly whittle the Florges' health down so i chose to just... let Coolatta faint so i could get a clean swap to Primavero and terastalize so the fairy moves wouldn't hurt as bad. And then i took it out with Pollen Puff. I figured that would just end things fastest and it did. I figured Coolatta fainting would mean nothing as this isn't a nuzlocke or anything but it hurt me emotionally :(. Like something about letting Coolatta faint felt different than it just happening. So uh yeah guess i'll just do it the slower way if i'm ever put in that situation again.
Happy to report that other than that the gym was. a lot of fun! The gym challenge was pretty hard as anything like that i instantly suck at. But it was fun reaching my first somewhat challenging gym. I also was listening to The Greatest Show at the same coincidentally and it worked pretty well with Tulip's vibes.
Oh! And i met the tiny lil child member of the elite four. I was on call with a friend and i said out loud "Oh my god its a child. Like just an actual kid. Not even. It's a doll." But seeing her Rika was pretty cute and i think she is adorable. Not sure if she should be in such an important ole but uh... guess i'll have to actually fight her to find out??
My team hasn't changed yet but i also did the future donphan titan before Ryme's gym

☆ Penny will wake up and just sit in her bed for a few hours without even putting on her glasses simply cuz she doesn't feel like it
☆ Before Iono became super famous for streaming, she actually was on whatever the pokemon equivalent of yt was and she made poorly made gacha videos and animation memes.
☆ Kieran is transmasc and there's no way he DOESN'T own the ogerpon binder
☆ Arven had to cut his own hair which is why it grows out so long, but he's so used to it being like that that he doesn't get it cut too often anymore cuz he likes it that way
☆ Penny and Marnie were friends at some point before she moved to Paldea and Penny had a massive crush on her
☆ Nemona has asthma and also her brace thing is actually a prosthetic arm.
☆ Rika is a genderfluid lesbian
☆ Grusha is transmasc, nonbinary, and bisexual
☆ on top of my Penny autism hc, Nemona, Arven, and Kieran are also on the spectrum
☆ Florian and Juliana are siblings (twins to be exact). They're both genderfluid and bi, but they're also kinda complete opposites of eachother. Florian is more of an introverted shut in who took all of his classes at the academy online, while Juliana took hers in public and she's an extroverted, chaotic gremlin. When Juliana met Penny, Arven, and Nemona (and eventually Carmine and Kieran) she dragged Florian out to meet them and the only ones he could really tolerate were Penny and Kieran (cuz they're both socially awkward just like him FJJSKA).
☆ Carmine played with the pokemon equivalent of Lalaloopsy dolls and she convinced Kieran that she got rid of them (she did not). She has them hidden so that no one can ever know she still secretly enjoys them (if someone finds out that'd be the death of her).
☆ Penny is 4'9"-5'. That's it that's the hc.
☆ Clavell will occasionally go to classes dressed as Clive just so he can learn about his students and get to know them better, he also likes the idea of being seen as "cool" when he's Clive (cuz genuinely, besides from the hair, lots of students think he's cool).
☆ Mela really wants to commit arson for some reason.
☆ Mela's favorite song is Enter Sandman by Metallica
☆ Atticus is genderfluid.
☆ Mela and Eri both have huge crushes on eachother (they're disaster lesbians /vpos)
☆ Giacomo used to be a SoundCloud rapper
To end this wave of SV hcs, here are my marching band hcs for various characters.
okay pokemon scarvio fans drop the headcanons i want to hear what the people think of the characters. could be about any.

My Review of Wonder Egg Priority
How did I get into this anime? So at the beginning of 2021, this anime was seen as a must-see and I put it on the plan to watch list right then and never looked back. Okay, that’s a lie. Obviously I’ve heard of what happened with the sequel special that came out shortly after the series end. Time to see what the hoopla was all about! Something has to account for a series going from a nearly solid 8/10 to worse than sand in your crotch.
Ai Ooto is a bit of a recluse. She was never one to make friends at school. She did though. A girl by the name of Koito Nagase chose to be Ai’s best friend. Soon after, Koito committed suicide and Ai is left alone again. Nowadays, Ai is talking to some strange entities and one ends up giving her a free egg. The purpose of the egg, Ai must break it. Once broken, a person comes out of the egg and Ai must help protect that person. These girls are a target for certain entities that take shape of the reason why they committed suicide.
Ai has taken on the role of helping every person that comes from an egg in hopes of one day getting closer to possibly helping her best friend Koito and finding the reason behind her suicide. Until then, her purpose is to protect these wonder eggs.
But Ai isn’t alone as there are several other girls doing the same thing with someone close to them. Neiru is doing it for her sister. Rika is doing it for her fan. And Momoe is doing it for a close friend who loved her.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: FUNimation really made this one exclusively theirs, but thankfully it’s on other platforms thanks to the new merger. On the plus side, their dub seems pretty cool. It gives me a chance to hear certain voice actresses I’ve only heard periodically or not at all since I haven’t been keeping up with FUNimation’s work as much as I really should have. Here’s what you might have recognized these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Ai is played by Kanata Aikawa
*Neiru is played by Tomori Kusunoki (known for Setsuna on Love Live Nijigasaki, LLENN on SAO: Gun Gale Online, Futaba in My Sensei is Annoying, and Misha on Misfit at Demon King Academy)
*Rika is played by Shuka Saitou (known for You on Love Live Sunshine and Sazanka on Oresuki)
*Momoe is played by Hinaki Yano (known for Yuu on Love Live Nijigasaki)
ENGLISH CAST: *Ai is played by Mikaela Krantz (known for Momiji in Fruits Basket 2019, Misaki on Railgun T, Clementine on Overlord, Doll on Black Butler, Fuwa on Shimoneta, and Mutsuki on Tokyo Ghoul :re)
*Neiru is played by Dawn M. Bennett (known for Frieda on Attack on Titan, Frederica on Re:Zero, Kefla on DB Super, Sister Lily on Black Clover, Frosch on Fairy Tail, and Yamada on Zombieland Saga)
*Rika is played by Anairis Quinones (known for Yelena on Attack on Titan, Echinda on Re:Zero, and Nessa on Pokemon Twilight)
*Momoe is played by Michelle Rojas (known for CZ on Overlord, Roxy on Mushoku Tensei, Kanan on Love Live Sunshine, and Mion on Higurashi Gou)
SHIPPING: So…I feel uneasy about Ai’s teacher, Mr. Sawaki. I don’t think he did anything to Koito, but I still felt ewwie when it came to him and Ai. I might be siding with Rika a bit, but I can’t really believe this innocent crap about casually drawing Ai and dating Ai’s mother.
Now for something a little less ewwie, let’s talk about Momoe. I know it doesn’t help that she’s the niece of Mr. Sawaki, but she doesn’t give off that creepy vibe. She’s kinda had a bit of a record with the ladies due to her tomboyish appearance. Momoe is fighting for Haruka, a girl who committed suicide after Momoe turned down her romantic offer. And a lot of the girls Momoe saves found her beautiful. What about men? Well folks, Momoe was asked out on a date by a boy. However, that boy thought Momoe was a boy…so that happened. If this series intends to continue, I would like to see Momoe meet someone. Though for the moment, I would like not to see this series for a long time. I’ll get to that why soon enough.
As for her what I think she identifies as…not my place to say, speculate, or continue further.
ENDING: How did things go so wrong?
How about for starters, don’t have a recap episode as part of the regular series!
Believe it or not, Cloverworks did the very same thing and at the very same time to The Promised Neverland. No one asked for that shit. Wonder Egg did not need a fucking recap for the first 7 episodes in a 12 episode season. Or should I say 11, because I can’t believe that a recap made its way onto the roster. I shouldn’t be so bitchy since there was a different episode planned, but it was scrapped and we were given the recap. I guess everyone at Cloverworks was on a deadline.
Neiru ended up with a big clue when it comes to saving girls that hatch from eggs. One of her eggs turned out to be her best friend named Kotobuki. The only problem is that Kotobuki is in a vegetative state. So this does dampen hopes of the girls trying to get to their ultimate goal of saving their loved one. And then Momoe got her wish granted as she was somewhat reunited with Haruka, the girl she was trying to save. She sees Haruka for a few seconds and she disappears, I guess she’s alive now. Then a grim reaper appears, kills Momoe’s familiar, and force-feeds it to her. And in the following episode, same thing happens to Rika.
And then we have those two suspicious crash-test dummies selling the eggs to the girls, Acca and Ura-Acca. I had suspicions about those two from the very second they appeared. I trust Kyubey…um, no, no I can’t go that far. But these two are almost for certain the cause of all the wonder egg girls’s trauma. And they are in cahoots of some sort with Neiru’s assistant.
What really happened was Acca and Ura-Acca (back when they were living human beings) created an A.I. named Frill. She was a very intelligent little girl that seemed to be happy living with her two daddies. But she was also programmed to have flaws too (including jealousy). That jealousy was showcased when Ura-Acca meets a woman that he ends up getting married to and eventually expecting a baby. Frill kills Ura-Acca’s wife. The baby survived. Ura-Acca entombs Frill. The baby grows up into a junior high student. And then she kills herself.
We’re pretty sure Frill had something to do with that suicide. Might as well blame her for every suicide in this story while I’m at it! Those weird deities that showed up in front of Rika and Momoe mentioned Frill by name. Too bad we don’t get any insight into this. Is she to blame for pushing these stressed females to the edge? As for the final episode, Ai saves an alternate universe version of herself!
So that happened! Yeah, Ai is saving herself. Apparently we’re dealing with alternate universe bullshit here. In another timeline, this second Ai committed suicide due to the bullying and alienation she suffered due to having Heterochromia (one eye color different from the other). I sure hope the sequel special clears up my confusion about the last couple of episodes.
Hahaha, famous last words!
THAT SPECIAL: So this is what happened…
*5 minutes into special* No way they’re doing another recap
*15 minutes into special* Seriously?! Another God damned recap?! Didn’t you guys do one during the series? Why is this necessary?
*25 minutes into special* So half of this special is dedicated to the recap. Okay, this better wrap things up nicely or I’m gonna spit.
Twenty minutes later…
I hate everyone now.
So Neiru is an AI created by Kotobuki, the AI introduced near the end and decides to try and become human in the dream world or some shit. Meanwhile all the girls Ai and the others risked to save are alive but don’t know of their real friend’s existence nor want anything to do with them. And I guess Frill is still out there getting into girls heads about suicide. Ai runs away from everything until the last minute of the special where she decides to go back to the eggs in hopes of finding and saving Neiru. And Ai indicates she’s back and I don’t know, is that a nod for another season?
Hmm…what does Ai always say when she fights the weird deities?
That’s how I feel right now.
GOD DAMN WAS THIS AGGRAVATING! Everything about this series was aggravating. For starters, the animation is beautiful. Of course it is, Cloverworks does fine work (most of the time). The start of the story gave me a lot of Madoka Magica vibes. Yeah, Ai and the other girls aren’t magical girls or anything like that. But they do have other worldly powers and go up against entities and deal with existential crisis of all forms. The way the story was going, it had me excited for more. And to make things more interesting, this was an original story. No manga, visual novel, or game to muck things up. All of us are in the same boat when watching. But then things take a dip in the road and eventually go off a cliff.
So much potential! So much hope! And the execution was shit! You hate to see that happen to a series like this. It did shine a bit of a light on a pretty sensitive subject like teenage female suicide. I know suicide is at an all-time high in Japan, but I’m unsure which gender is most affected. Regardless, being a teenager sucks and thoughts can arise from anything! Female adolescence is a stressful time and some of the stories of these girls Ai and the others saved were interesting to watch. But then when we get to the story about Frill, I’m just thrown off! She’s still out there convincing teenage girls to off themselves. She’s a menace and no one is stopping her.
You know what? After watching that, I’m rethinking wanting to read a manga or light novel adaptation. Hell, I don’t think I would even watch a second season if we’re ‘blessed’ with one. That might change in the future but for now I don’t want anything to do with this shit. And as for recommendation…I don’t know what to say except avoid the recaps and make your own decision whether or not you watch the second half to the special. I personally hated the ending, but make your own choice on the matter.
If you would like to watch Wonder Egg Priority, FUNimation and Crunchyroll have every episode available.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some old Mushishi episodes calling my name.

Hi hi
Firstly, I love your longer chapters! They really don’t feel as long as the word count may sound cause they’re so jam packed with content!
Secondly, do you have any tips for writing dialogue? I’m also a fic writer but I struggle a lot with it…oof
HI HI HELLO!! my god, the influx of messages like this has honestly made me feel infinitely better. it's so validating to know that every word counts. you are too kind!!
i have a ton of tips for writing dialogue, so my response got super long. but i think it's quite helpful, so answer below cut!
to be honest...my approach to brainstorming is kinda unconventional. i like listening to music and doing some menial task to distract myself -- driving, cooking, dishes, etc. i find it helps my mind relax! there's this thing called the shower principle -- you know how you often are struck with great ideas randomly in the shower? yeah, it's that weird chemical half-distraction thing that helps different parts of your brain kick into gear.
then, in terms of dialogue flow! i think if you don't restrict yourself to brainstorming of a conversation directly in order, it really helps. i often get ideas and then have to totally restructure an interaction before i write it. figuring out the trajectory of the exchange helps: what are the characters' thoughts and feelings at the beginning? how do their moods shift throughout the conversation, and where do you want them to emotionally end up? figuring out what talking points flow cleanly into others helps you structure things out.
TL;DR, because wow, this got long: it's about building bridges. how should the emotions in the conversation ebb and flow? how can you use certain topics to make connections with others that will come up later in the dialogue? what background info do the characters need to tell each other, if any? solid conversations are built on strong foundations. keeping in mind the characters' opinions towards each other is crucial, and if you want their opinions to change or relationship to develop, be sure to use verbal lines to incite these changes.
if you want to read more, let's break down a dialogue-heavy interaction: yuuta and toge's accidental date in tpg 29. since they're new to each other, what do they have to start with? what base information do they need? toge's cursed speech + talking via writing, and yuuta's...whole situation. they start off dorky and cute, but this also reveals insight into toge's struggles with interacting with others, and watching yuuta's expressiveness causes a slight shift inside toge.
the whole thing with sharing a milkshake reveals yuuta's self-sacrificing traits and toge's obliviousness to what it means to do such a thing. they discuss likes and dislikes, which leads into favorite animals -> maki & yuuta have the same favorite -> yuuji, toge's brother, has a favorite while toge doesn't -> yuuta's sisters "least favorite animals" as their hatred of non-sorcerers. yuuta flips out, but toge's unconventional reaction by offering a ketchup packet to cheer him up causes yuuta to confess he also struggles to interact with others -- and then things start to get more philosophical!
yuuta saying it hurts to be alone causes another shift in toge, where he's forced to once again confront his own struggles. toge asks yuuta to make him cry, then this flows into a conversation about rika when yuuta admits he doesn't make people cry on purpose. as toge, a relative outsider, picks apart yuuta's guilt, yuuta grasps at straws to insist he's a bad person, leading to him mentioning his birth parents.
here, i wanted them to open up to each other a bit more. to do this, toge admits on his own for the first time that he hurt his birth parents, too. when they realize their similarities, this deepens their connection, but as they continue to discuss this, they realize they have equal but opposite feelings. toge is desperate to feel emotions like a real person and not a doll, while yuuta conversely wants to discard agency and become a puppet.
then, a pause in dialogue allows toge to process his emotions towards yuuta and conclude that he's amazing for his expressiveness. oblivious again, toge bluntly says this, and yuuta verbally expresses how flustered he is and that he doesn't understand how toge could say that.
this leads to the italicized "oh" moment for toge: yuuta tells toge he's confusing, which no one has said to him before. toge's speechlessness makes yuuta's self-sacrificing tendencies, which were established earlier in the conversation to tie things together, manifest in saying he wants to save toge and feel pain in his place, at the expense of himself.
toge knows this isn't fair, and offers that instead, they should help each other. yuuta is at a loss, since no one his age has ever tenderly offered him this (ily maki, but their dynamic is much more explosive! which has its own merits, too), yuuta's brain short-circuits and he ends the conversation by awkwardly changing the subject to finding their parents.
a lot changed for them during this. they got to know one anothers' personalities and their complex situations, connected over it, then established philosophical themes for each of them. this ties into themes in the narrative as a whole, situating the conversation cleanly into the story. i think dialogue writing in comedy is a bit different, but this is already almost 1,000 words. if you were asking about that, follow up if you'd like!
all of this takes practice. don't be discouraged if you struggle at first -- different authors have different things that come to them naturally. as for me, i think in dialogue, but when i first started writing, prose was what i really struggled with. it's still hard for me, but with time it's gotten much easier. i've really improved!
in conclusion: you got this!!! feel free to ask any more questions, and i hope this helps!
#omg pls read this. it took me so long but turned out great#lmk if you find it helpful! i'm so curious for your thoughts#thanks for this message<3#tpg
