‘Super Dodgeball Brawlers’
[DS] [USA] [MAGAZINE] [2008]
This game marked the return of Kunio-kun characters in a dodge ball game with the characters owned by Million. It is also the first Kunio-kun game published in a mobile platform where the English version uses Japanese character and team names. Previously, only the Neo-Geo Super Dodge Ball game (developed by Technōs Japan Corp. and published by SNK) followed such naming rules. Aksys marketed Super Dodgeball Brawlers under the 'Kunio series.' However, the game does not use any previously available Super Dodge Ball music in all region releases. ~Kunio-kun Wiki

Aye that’s me still playing through the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle in order if you’re wondering, which is still a fantastic retro collection worth every penny.
Now, I’ve actually played a dodgeball title before--I had a cart-only copy of the GBA one for a while and actually might still have it kicking about somewhere--but let me say… I don’t really get this game design. Maybe it gets more interesting if you’re playing it on harder difficulties (watch this space for when I play through Super Dodgeball, I guess!) but it does mostly seem like a game where you 1) try and catch the ball when the enemy throws it at you (because dodging it means the enemy at the back will get it) and 2) run forward and try and time your throw to get a special throw.
I mean, that’s it really. There’s some chance to intercept passes when some (annoying) enemy teams pass a lot I guess, but it’s really hard (not least because of the brawler viewpoint makes lining up near-impossible). I looked it up and there’s actually tons of depth in terms of differing health, super moves, etc. etc. etc. but none of it seems to really be apparent when you’re playing as long as you stick to doing 1 and 2.
I’m certain saying that will make a bunch of Super Dodgeball fans to climb out of the woodwork and attack me… well it would, if enough people read these for it to reach a Super Dodgeball fan. I’m willing to believe the depth is explored more deeply in later versions! Unless it’s just that dodgeball isn’t that interesting a sport? Which I’m not going to say definitively in case any fans of the non-super version of dodgeball are reading this.
Will I ever play it again? I’ll play the US version on medium difficulty, how does that sound. I’m not a hater!
Final Thought: Maybe I shouldn’t be allowed to review this because I don’t think I’ve ever played the “real” version of Dodgeball. I’m pretty sure we just played the version where one person starts with the ball and if they bean anyone they join the throwing team. Which is super fun to be fair and (at this point) makes more sense to me...

River City: Tokyo Rumble
In the realm of retro remakes and re-imaginings it’s normal to expect ample amounts of deviation from the source material. To say that they “just don’t make ‘em like they used to” is an understatement, and has few exceptions. Most games that fall into these categories end up with slick new 3D rendered polygons, orchestral soundtracks, and tons of bells and whistles. That’s not to say that I’m against these additional features, but sometimes they detract from the often simple formulas that made the source material so engaging.
Enter River City: Tokyo Rumble. A no frills, no fuss revival of what made the previous entries so spectacular: beating up gang members, eating cheeseburgers, and buying new abilities in shops. Certainly the Kunio-Kun series, as it’s known in Japan, has evolved over time as the property changed hands, but it’s always been faithful to its roots. This pattern is still alive and well in RC:TR, but it’s the execution of it that really drew me into the game.
Keep in mind that I’ve only experienced the US released Kunio/RCR games, so this is from the perspective of a fan who has played very little of the franchise as a whole. I can’t speak to how well this compares to the Super Famicom outings, because I simply haven’t had the opportunity to experience them. I went into RC:TR as a huge fan of River City Ransom on the NES and a fan of brawlers in general.
And I’m happy to report that I wasn’t disappointed. My initial concerns were that the humor would be butchered in the localization, since many game publishers seem convinced (yes, even still today) that US gamers prefer hard-edged stories to lighthearted romps. Luckily the silly nature of the game remains intact. Even though it doesn’t adhere to the US naming standards in the NES RCR localization, the goofy antics that play out through the cutscenes are thoroughly enjoyable.
But, antics aside, a brawler like this is only as good as its gameplay. At first glance RC:TR seems to be in lock step with the NES game, but it quickly opens up as there are a litany of different abilities to unlock and tinker around with. The combat swells from basic punches and kicks to full on Judo throws and in-air meteor smash techniques. By the end of the game I had my choice of techniques to take on my enemies, and each battle played out just a little bit differently.
The game is also aesthetically charming, with cardboard cutout sprites jumping around the rendered backgrounds. The 3D option on the 3DS lends a wonderful depth of field reminiscent of the 3D Classics line of games also available on the platform. My only complaint, if I were to lodge one, would be the ever so slightly blurry character portraits at the top of the screen. Although they don’t detract from the onscreen action at all.
Story-wise it plays out exactly as you would expect: Kunio is tasked with beating some punks to a pulp with the help of a full cast of AI supporting characters. The AI can be given basic commands, and if leveled and equipped properly can hold its own very well in battle. You’ll have to do a bit of micromanaging from time to time to keep them up to snuff, but it’s enjoyable to work on your AI partner of choice and watch them succeed in battle. The story mode is short and sweet, fitting the genre admirably, and there’s plenty of fanservice built in. The final battle had some great moments which I won’t spoil, and I was genuinely connected with the characters by the end of it. After completion you can effectively start a new game plus, keeping all of your abilities and honing Kunio and friends further in a second playthrough. And this is a game that begs to be played multiple times.
Other than the main story mode there are battle and dodgeball modes (dodgeball being a mainstay of the Kunio franchise) that are great fun to poke around in. Various characters, songs, and stages can be unlocked in these modes by playing the story, making the entire experience feel very interconnected.
Overall, River City: Tokyo Rumble is exactly what I like to see in retro remakes and re-imaginings: the evolution of the ideas that made the original game so good. In that respect the game succeeds with flying colors. If you’re looking for a solid, lighthearted brawler for your 3DS then look no further. Here’s hoping we see more Kunio games stateside in the future.
TL;DR: This is a damn fine brawler. Pick it up!

DOUBLE DRAGON & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle review
DOUBLE DRAGON & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle review
A couple of years ago I posted up a news piece that covered a compilation of Kunio-kun games called Kunio-kun The World Classics Collection. This was a collection of 11 Kunio-kun games that were released in Japan in their original form plus four games that got localized in the West and re-named (Renegade, River City Ransom, Crash n’ the Boys Street Challenge, and Super Dodgeball). While we did…
