Mr Everdeen's name theories
Ok so I listed all the options I had in mind for Mr Everdeen’s name, including the theories about him being related or close to the Covey. ✨Feel free to add more✨.
Ballad names :
Although I love the ballads of Joe Hill, Tom Joad, Michael Collins and James Larkin etc I don’t think this is what she has chosen (cause yes she has decided his name and she better gives it to us sorry that sounds like a threat) because it’s not really related to his story.
Annarchie from Annarchie Gordon : I saw someone on Tumblr or Reddit talking about this scottish ballad and how they could see Mr Everdeen being named after this song for it’s about a women, Jeannie, who “is to be married off to the wealthy Lord Saltoun, but she is in love with Annachie”. Contrary to Katniss’ parents who end up together, Jeannie marries the Lord. So she, and Annarchie, both die of a broken heart. Similar to Mrs Everdeen falling into depression when Mr Everdeen literally dies.
Also, if he’s named Annarchie, wouldn't it be funny if Mrs Everdeen’s name was Peggy (because of the ballad of Peggy Gordon).
Jack from Black Jack Davey : When I heard this song and its differents versions like “G**** Davey”, “The G**** Laddie” or “The G**** Rover”, I thought of Mr and Mrs Everdeen. I mean, look at the lyrics :
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang And he won the heart of a lady
It is also a ballad about a girl from a wealthy family falling in love with a man she’s not supposed to marry. There are multiple versions and in some, while she left her husband (and sometimes baby) behind her to go with her lover, this man leaves her. But in most of the versions I listened to they live happily together. Plus, in this ballad, the man sings and he’s a traveler, like the Covey.
And in “Black Jack Davey” well, there’s also a color, so…….
Robin from Robin Hood : Many people have said this was one of their guesses, due to the obvious connection with the woods and the use of bow and arrows, but also because Robin is kind of a rebel. Just like Mr Everdeen. It’s also a name connected to nature since Robin is a type of bird. And god do I love birds images in THG.
Ira from Ira Hayes : He was indigenous (an Akimel O'odham American) and was a marine who fought during the Pacific War. He suffered from PTSD and alcoholism. It’s not in relation to what happened to Mr Everdeen who wasn’t even born during the Rebellion and died in a mine accident, but Ira is also a common name in the South and it’s my hc that the Everdeens are part native.
Covey name : ballad + color
If Mr Everdeen not only has a ballad name but also a color, maybe Black for “Black Jack” as stated before. But others could be :
Ash (for Gray as in Lucy Gray but also for the fire symbolism).
Russet (color of fall “often associated with sorrow or grave seriousness”).
Cornsilk (if he is Maude Ivory’s son or grandson, it could make sense to have another shade of an off-white color. Specially in contrast to Snow’s obsession for his white roses).
Crimson (deep red, similar to Carmine so perhaps a link with Clerk Carmine Clade. And numerous birds have that name although not in America).
Copper (reddish brown, there's a venomous snake named “the eastern copperhead” in eastern North America that can be found in Appalachia).
Or types of green like Erin (also an irish name), Myrtle (a dark green + Myrtus is a kind of flower). And obviously, Evergreen. I remember thinking it was a funny coincidence that Katniss’ favorite color was green when her family name was so close to Evergreen. Then TBOSAS came out and I thought maybe the Everdeens are descendants of the Covey but they have changed their names or were forced to.
There’s Canary and Olive but too obvious imo. Maybe Beaver (color + animal so linked to nature and hunt), Chestnut (named after the nut of chestnut tree so nature and food), Fallow (a pale brown associated with fallow deer) or Fawn.
I saw Claret (color of red wine) and the word has a nice ring so it stuck with me, even though I don’t see why specifically that could be a covey name for him.
Traditional / nature names :
I'd like to believe that naming Katniss and Prim after plants was a personnal thing for Mr and Mrs Everdeen, in relation to how they met. But since others in 12, especially in the Seam, have nature names perhaps Mr Everdeen has one too.
Ira / Hayes : traditional names in the South, also a link to Ira Hayes.
Fawn : traditional appalachian name (and linked to the animal).
Lafe : traditional name in the South, means “heir, descendant ; faith” (could refer to Lucy Gray and the Covey’s legacy, that Mr Everdeen passed down to Katniss).
Merle : traditional southern name and also a bird.
Earl : traditional southern name which means "nobleman” or “warrior.”
Tanner : traditional southern name which comes from the profession of tanner as someone who made leather from animal hides. The name “is often associated with hard work and practicality, reflecting the practical and hands-on nature”.
Chayton : originates from the Lakota word čhetáŋ, meaning “falcon” or “hawk.”
Willow : traditional appalachian name and also linked to nature (now imagine toast babies named after him)
Harper : traditional appalachian name and a link to the musical instrument.
Yarrow : traditional appalachian name, meaning “rough stream” but also associated with a wild herb and flowering plant.
Hunter / Archer / Forest (but let’s hope it’s not hahahahah)
Knowing that if it's a traditional name, she probably changed it a bit.

*SPOILERS FROM AN EXTRACT OF CHAPTER 1 OF SUNRISE ON THE REAPING*
Haymitch's birthday is reaping day. Haymitch's 16th birthday is the day he's selected as a tribute. He spent every birthday between 16 and 41 being forced to 1 mentor two kids he knew had no hope of survival, and 2 to remember all those that he lost because he survived. The extra weight this adds to (book) Haymitch's outburst after Katniss volunteers.
Sid is so Prim coded, I want to eat glass.
Haymitch's dad also died in the mines like Katniss and Gale's fathers.
Each of them doing everything they can to help provide for their families. Katniss and Gale by hunting and going beyond the fence, Haymitch by doing any job he can.
Haymitch's mom working as a laundress like Hazel Hawthorne. Makes Haymitch taking Hazel in as his housekeeper (after the entire district essentially boycotts her after the peacekeepers whip Gale) hits so much harder. As much as it hurts me, it does make me wonder if he ever looked at Gale with Rory and Vick and thought of himself and Sid, especially since he shares a lot of physical features with Gale (the "seam" look, dark hair and skin, and grey eyes).
Haymitch and Katniss are truly the same side of the coin, we knew that from the original series but I'm so looking forward to delving into that more in this novel.
I betting that there's going to be a Sunrise on the reaping/Sid's wakeup call callback at the end and that it is going to hit so hard and shatter me into a million pieces.
For the above, I do have three scenarios in my head; 1 is that it's the morning of the 51st games and someone from the captiol comes to wake him and says a line about how it's sunrise and they have to get ready for the reaping or 2 we time jump to the morning of the reaping for the 74th games and Effie says something to that effect, or 3 Haymitch says it to himself on either the morning of the 51st or the 74th games as he drinks, or post mockingjay (in a similar style to the mockingjay epilogue).
Haymitch's love is called Lenore Dove. I'm interested to find out if she has any link to the covey as her first name is also the title of a poem by Edgar Allen Poe. The poem, from my reading, is about the death of a beautiful young woman, and her lover who hopes to reunite with in the afterlife.
"So don’t feed the nightmares. Don’t let yourself panic. Don’t give the Capitol that. They’ve taken enough already." I CANNOT WAIT TO DEVOUR THIS BOOK.

Something I’m so excited for with Sunrise on The Reaping is that we will finally be freed from the shackles of mainstream Hayffie domination. Probably.
(This is lighthearted please take it as such)
#like with the way people latched onto Corio and Lucy Gray…you can’t tell me the fandom hive won’t shift into Haymitch/‘his girl’#or Haymitch/Maysilee#Or the new mlm ships we will get (Im sorry I am like 98% sure that there will be a section of the fandom that latches onto Haymitch/Oddsman#silly goofy post#I don’t dislike Hayffie!! I mean…not that much#i have thoughts#and the problem is that my thoughts are in flux often#I truly think we will see a new Haymitch ship take the world by storm.#Like Hayffie might still be equally revered but I can already TELL the kinds of TikTok/Instagram posts we’re going to get#I don’t even want to textually put it into words rn but I have a sixth sense for this kinda thing trust#<- watch me be dead wrong LMFAO#the hunger games#sunrise on the reaping#I do really want to go into this from a meta speculative sense#because this is so interesting to me (social behaviors within internet niches)#anyway#posting this under the radar#hopefully

2025 Book Bingo Plans
I've started planning out some of what I'm going to read for @batmanisagatewaydrug's 2025 book bingo (read more here), and to get myself hyped, I'm sharing the books I've set in stone, as well as recording some ideas I have for the other spaces!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6be221b534880cc0462029e0595ab1b9/247b97f18def51b0-b0/s540x810/a64b6e3cfd645ff8b5c9bdefad44fce1f22c6625.jpg)
I've been looking forward to Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins for a while now, I'm interested to see if it will live up to the philosophical examination it sets itself up as.
I got the illustrated copy of Eragon by Christopher Paolini/Sidharth Chaturvedi for Christmas, so that's kind of a no-brainer for the re-read.
Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao I'm also getting for Christmas, but it's the pretty Illumicrate version, so it's not getting here until January or February. I took a gamble with Iron Widow and got the hardcover, and I was not disappointed (I've read it 3 times and am going to reread it once I get HT, and will certainly reread both in the future), so I expect the fancy one will be money well spent (by my aunt but still).
I am just assuming that My Friends by Fredrik Backman is going to be set in Sweden, because all of Backman's other novels are set there. Hopefully I don't need to find a new book for the category lol. If I do this one will probably fit Literary Fiction anyway.
I've been working my way through my reread of the Hitchiker's Guide trilogy by Douglas Adams, and think I can finish the 3rd in the next few days, so I'm all set up for the 4th going into 2025 :)
I stopped reading Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey when school got really rough last year and have wanted to go back to it for a while. It was recommended to me by my dad, and one of his favorite books. In the 100-ish pages I've read, I've found it to be amazing as well.
Things My Son Needs to Know About the World by Fredrik Backman was going to be my memoir choice until I realized it was actually essays.
I saw Death In Rocky Mountain National Park: Accidents and Foolhardiness on the Continental Divide by Randi Minetor while just wandering Barnes and Noble and was sure I had to read it when the title made it clear it wasn't going to blame animals for the actions of humans.
I've wanted to read Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine for a long time, but the concept alone has always made it a little too sad to convince myself to pick up. This year will be its year though.
I promised my roommate that I would read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson last year so that we could watch the show for Halloween. I'm following through this year instead.....
My reasoning for Thud! by Terry Pratchett is simple. I like Discworld, I like Ankh Morpork, I like the Watch novels, I like Sam Vimes.
Below the cut are some of my ideas for the sections I haven't filled yet (anyone should feel free to send me as many recommendations for these as you want):
Literary Fiction:
All The Names by José Saramago (recommended by my dad)
The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (recommended by my roommate)
Short Story Collection:
And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer and Longer, The Answer is No, and The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman (this is not technically a collection, but it is a group of short stories that I really want to read)
20th Century Speculative Fiction:
The Martian by Andy Weir (I just want to read it)
Published Before 1950:
TBD Agatha Christie novel (I stole my dad's books acquired a lot of these and want to read some)
Indie Publisher:
Something from this list
Graphic Novel, Comic Book, or Manga:
Nothing Special by Katie Cook (I read this on Webtoon as it's been coming out, it has some of the best panel transitions on the platform, and I really want to see how she translated that to book form. Also I want to own the books bc I love the story and refuse to pay Webtoon money for it)
Animal On the Cover:
A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella Bird (I was looking at the "local" shelf (not at this book in particular though) in Barnes and Noble, and a woman (not an employee) came up to me to tell me this is one of her favorite books ever and now I must read it)
The Girl in Red by Christina Henry (I help run a blog here cataloguing books with little to no romance and/or sex in them for people who are sex/romance repulsed, and someone submitted this. I also read a book years ago that I loved, but I didn't have Goodreads even at that point, and all I really remembered was the cover and opening. I've been looking for a while, and I think this very well could be it)
City of Nightmares by Rebecca Schaeffer (I loved her Market of Monster's trilogy and the Webtoon adaptation, and have been meaning to read this for ages)
Descendent of the Crane by Joan He (recommended by my other roommate, plus I liked her book The Ones We're Meant to Find)
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett (re: the reasons for Thud!)
2025 Debut Author:
Honestly, no clue here. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it
Read a Zine and Make a Zine:
Scarland fanzine by a whole bunch of people (I've read it before but it's really quite amazing and I would read it again happily)
2024 Award Winner:
Something on this list
Romance Novel:
Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane (recommended by a friend whose judgement in books I really trust)
Read and Make a Recipe:
We will see what strikes my fancy this year
Historical Fiction:
Fever 1973 by Laurie Halse Anderson (this one has been on my TBR since 2015)
The Island of the Sea Women by Lisa See (this was a birthday present in 2019)
Babel by R.F. Kuang (the premise is cool, and it says it's a response to The Secret History and I loved that book)
Bookseller or Librarian Rec:
Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea (in 5th grade, we did a unit where the class was split into 3rds and we each analyzed 1 book. The kids who read this book loved it. I really wanted to read it then, but never did. Then in 8th grade a librarian recommended it to me, bringing it back to my memory, but I still didn't read it. It lives on my TBR because I feel like I need to read it for 10/13 year old me)

There’s a lot of speculation and hopes for Sunrise on the Reaping, but what I want is at least a little sniper of Hamitch being there for Katniss after Prim’s health, or at least some parallels.
From the sniper Susan Collins released, we know Hamitch had a mom, girlfriend, and baby brother. From Catching Fire, we know that they all died/were killed. We know that Hamitch’s alcoholism is due in part to that (and in part to the futility of mentoring tributes from district twelve).
There are a lot of parallels between Mitch and Katniss throughout the whole series, but especially throughout Catching Fire and Mockingjay. I hope now that we have a little bit more of Hamitch’s background we get a little more acknowledgment of just how deeply Hamitch understands her loss (and hope with how he is able to find peace/happiness/closure/contentment even if it seams far away for Katniss at the end of the Revolution).

Completely random thought that came into my mind, so people speculate that sunrise on the reaping would be from Young Plutarch pov and it suddenly came into me what if Suzanne draws a parallel between Coriolanus and Lucy gray and have Young Plutarch Fall In love with the district 1 girl and then have that her death is one of the reasons that makes him question the system and it sets him up to join the rebellion just a speculation

Okay thinking about the new book Sunrise on the Reaping-
I’ve been looking at several theories. I do think it probably won’t be from Haymitch’s POV (as much as we would love it, Suzzane always subverts our expectations). My favorite theory [this post & its comments] is that it could be from Plutarchs POV and on how he realizes how terrible and cruel the games are in a reverse Snow situation, & that would also greatly allow for some insight into propaganda & control by the government & everything from a POV that would be mature enough to offer those insights. Although I’m sure we could be wrong.
I do think that it won’t be from anyone else in the games, however, unless she does POV switches between characters. (Although I don’t know if I could see her doing that). Why? Because everyone else is going to die. What happens AFTER the games, and how Snow handles the whole “oh that Abernathy kid kind of cheated the system with that force field trick he thinks he’s so clever haha” thing is going to be VERY crucial to whatever message Suzzane has about propaganda. Because after is where we’re going to see most of the propaganda kick in.
ALSO- I have another theory! I bet coverage of Haymitch’s games were probably altered. For what Haymitch did, killing off all the people he loves was a pretty far act. Katniss & Peeta faced almost no punishment for what they did in their games (other than the quell reaping from the victors- which was like half a year later rather than two weeks). Granted, maybe it was because their publicity was way greater & it would have reflected bad if he did something to them, but we can’t really know beyond what was implied/speculated to in the movies. If I remember correctly, the same thing happened to Johana after her games when she refused to do Snow’s bidding. I could be wrong, but I really feel like something else happened that caused the capitals reaction, and was subsequently covered up by the capital, and was bad enough that Haymitch never talks about it. Why did they wait two weeks? So he’d get comfortable with his new life & then for them to yank it out from under his feet? Surely something else happened? Did he go on a victory tour during that time? Did something go wrong? What did they cover up they had to have covered up SOMETHING especially if this book is on propaganda & media manipulation & stuff. WHAT HAPPENED???

The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping ☀️20+ Possible Returning Characters
We only have a few clues about Suzanne Collins' upcoming Hunger Games prequel book, Sunrise on The Reaping. Still, they're enough to make us start speculating (obsessing?!) about what characters from the previous books might return and what surprises the new book might hold.
Here are some of the potential returning characters and the intriguing reasons why they might appear in the new book. Remember, this is all in good fun, and none of these characters are confirmed to be in the story.
☀️Haymitch Abernathy: Haymitch is the victor of the 50th Hunger Games, which means his presence in Sunrise on the Reaping is almost guaranteed. We know from the book announcement that the story starts on the morning of the Reaping of the 2nd Quarter Quell. Catching Fire (book) includes a scene where Katniss and Peeta watch a recording of his Games.
☀️Plutarch Heavensbee: Suzanne Collins said of the new book, "The story lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative." Who better to include in this deep dive into propaganda than the head of propaganda during the rebellion and the Secretary of Communications after? In an interview for The Hunger Games's 10th Anniversary Special Edition, Suzanne Collins revealed that Plutarch had been plotting as an underground rebel since at least Finnick Odair's Games (65th). The Second Quarter Quell could have been his awakening.
☀️President Snow: By the 50th Games, Snow had already been president for a while, so he is another character likely to appear. The Catching Fire book featured a scene involving Snow announcing the 2nd Quarter Quell.
☀️Tigris Snow: We don't know what happened to Tigris between Ballad and The Hunger Games, but SOTR may provide some insight. Katniss remembered Tigris as one of the most celebrated Hunger Games stylists, so we might see her in her prime during the 50th.
☀️Mrs./Mr. Everdeen: Katniss' mother, who was unnamed in the books and films, was around the same age as Haymitch, and we find out in Catching Fire that she was also in the Reaping for the 50th Hunger Games. She wasn't selected, but her good friend, Maysilee Donner, was. Though he was never mentioned in the context of the 50th Hunger Games, Katniss' father could also make an appearance. He's presumably around the same age as Mrs. Everdeen, and there's a lot of speculation about his potential ties to the Covey.
Suzanne said in an interview about Katniss' parents, "Her parents have their own histories in District 12, but I only included what's pertinent to Katniss's tale. I have a world of information about the characters that didn't make it into the book. With some stories, revealing that could be illuminating, but in the case of The Hunger Games, I think it would only be a distraction unless it was part of a new tale within the world of Panem." We're getting that new tale now, so some of those histories may come to light.
☀️Maysilee Donner: Maysilee Donner has so many connections to the 50th Hunger Games that I'd be shocked if she wasn't in the book. She was reaped along with Haymitch and two other children from District 12. She and Haymitch were allies in the arena, and she used the poinsins in the arena as a weapon. She was the original owner of the Mockingjay pin, friends with Katniss' mother, and owned a CANARY, which was given to Katniss' mother after she died in the arena. The bird references are off the charts. Is that wing shadow on the cover of Sunrise actually a canary???
☀️Caesar Flickerman: In The Hunger Games book, Katniss mentions that he was the Host for as long as anyone could remember, and in Catching Fire (book), she and Peeta watch a tape of him interviewing Haymitch before the 50th Games.
☀️ Effie Trinket: We don't know Effie's exact age, but she makes many references to getting promoted to a better district in the books, which could mean she's at the beginning of her career at the time of the 74th Hunger Games. This COULD put her in her late 20's - early 30's and make her too young for Sunrise on The Reaping. Since we don't have a definite age and she's more of a contemporary of Haymitch in the films, I wishfully speculate that she might make an appearance there somewhere. There's one tiny line in THG where Haymitch drunkenly tries to give Effie a big hug at the Reaping, so I'm clinging to my delusions until I read otherwise.
☀️Mags: Mags was one of the tributes in the Third Quarter Quell and was the oldest surviving victor in The Hunger Games, having won the 11th Games (the year after Lucy Gray won the 10th). She would have likely been a mentor in Haymitch's 50th Hunger Games. Mags would be around 56 in Sunrise on the Reaping,
☀️Beetee/Wiress - Beetee and Wiress are also 75th Hunger Games tributes who could be a mentor in the 50th Hunger Games. Exactly which Games they won is unknown, but it's believed to have been before Haymitch's.
Beetee, Wiress, and Haymitch were all rebels aware of District 13's existence, and Sunrise on the Reaping may explore how they became part of the rebellion.
☀️Chaff/Seeder - From the books, we know that Chaff was the victor of the 45th Hunger Games and became close friends with Haymitch after his victory in the 50th Games. Katniss says, "I know Chaff by sight 'cause I've spent years watching him pass a bottle back and forth with Haymitch on television." In the book, Katniss remarks that Seeder is around 60, and at the end of Catching Fire, Haymitch reveals that Seeder was one of the 12 victors who knew of the rebellion and was part of the alliance to save Katniss.
☀️Greasy Sae - In the Hunger Games movie, Greasy Sae is briefly shown when she gives Katniss the Mockingjay pin at the Hob. However, in the book, Greasy Sae is well known by the District 12 citizens for selling bowls of soup at the Hob, and after Katniss returns home in Mockingjay, Greasy Sae cares for her. She's the right age to have been around District 12 during the 50th Hunger Games, and since Haymitch is from the Seam, he likely knew her in his youth. Her character could be valuable to Sunrise on the Reaping since they must explain how she ended up with Maysilee's Mockingjay pin in the movie's version of events.
☀️Peeta Mellark's parents - Mr. Mellark was a member of District 12's merchant class, along with Katniss' mother. He wanted to marry Mrs. Everdeen in his youth, but she "ran off with a coal miner," Mr. Everdeen. If they were all around the same age as Haymitch was during the 50th Games - 16 - there's a potential to get a peek at the relationship between Mrs. Everdeen and Mr. Mellark.
☀️Alma Coin—We don't know much about Alma Coin's early life, but we do know that she's in her 50s, has been leading District 13 for some time, and lost her husband and child to a pox epidemic. She's an interesting character to bring into the new book because she's a massive part of Panem's rebellion that we know very little about. She'd be in her twenties in Sunrise.
☀️Seneca Crane: We don't know Seneca Crane's age in the books, but since Suzanne introduced Arachne Crane in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Seneca was a Gamemaker in the 74th Games, I had to include him as a possible character.
☀️Claudius Templesmith: Claudius Templesmith was the announcer of the Hunger Games and had an expanded role as a Hunger Games commentator alongside Caesar Flickerman in the films. His character is unlikely to play a big part in Sunrise, but Suzanne does love to surprise us.
☀️The Covey: Lucy Gray's adopted family was left behind when she disappeared, and there are some clues from the books that they may still be a part of District 12 through the time of the 2nd rebellion. A "lone fiddler" escaped the bombing of District 12 with his instrument. As a refugee in District 13, he performed at Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta's wedding. This may have been Clerk Carmine, the Covey's fiddler. In Ballad, the Covey kept a pet goat named Shamus. They also discuss building a herd of goats and selling the milk, so it's theorized the Goat Man from the original trilogy may have been one of the Covey, possibly Tam Amber.
☀️Lucky Flickerman is the Host of the 10th Hunger Games and, based on clues from the books and Ballad movie ("Table for Two and a High Chair"), is likely Caesar Flickerman's father. Lucky's age is undefined in the book, so depending on his supposed age, he could still be alive at the time of Sunrise.
☀️The Plinths: At the end of Ballad, Strabo Plinth adopted Coriolanus as his heir, ending the poverty that had plagued the Snow family since the end of the First Rebellion. Mr. and Mrs. Plinth moved into the apartment below the Snows' and Ma came by daily to help the Grandma'am. They may be elderly at the time of Sunrise, but there's a chance of their mention in the book.
☀️10th Hunger Games Mentors/ Academy Students grown up—The remaining Academy Students who served as mentors in the 10th Hunger Games are at the perfect age to be established in their careers by Sunrise. Perhaps we'll see some of them working in positions of power within Snow's regime.
☀️Which character/s are you hoping Sunrise on the Reaping will focus on? I'm always eager to hear your insights and speculations in the comments!

@batmanisagatewaydrug's 2025 Book Bingo Update!
I started with Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer and it was not my favorite if I'm being honest. But I intentionally got Sci-Fi out of the way for that.
I loved re-reading The Hunger Games and still have TBOSAS and Sunrise on the Reaping left in the series. I also threw in The Little Prince since I had never read that before and couldn't come up with a book I read as a child and not a preteen/teen.
I moved onto The Cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez for Lit Fic and it was a 5 star book for me! I highly recommend it.
I'm about to finish Shadow of Night the sequel to A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I am not enjoying the books as much as the tv series but it's still a fun vampire/witch relationship (even if I question some stuff).
I think I'm close to a row of bingo! Libby just let me borrow Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. Story of Your Life is what Arrival was based on, I know I read it in college but wanted to read more of Chiang's work. I just need 20th century speculative fiction and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin is a "4 week wait" right now on Libby! 😊😊😊

Damn I just typed way too much about the SotR cover.
Welp I want to make it quick for the protagonist post.
I HAVE SO MANY THINGS TO SAY BUT NOT ENOUGH TIME OR ENERGY TO WRITE THEM.
Okay so the main contenders in my opinion are:
Haymitch, Plutarch.
Maysilee.
Honestly there’s more but to divide the sections a little bit let’s just play a game of “don’t question it.” Here are (nearly?) all the possible options for the protagonist(s):
•Mr Everdeen
•Mrs Everdeen
•Mrs Undersee / Maysilee’s twin.
•Haymitch’s Girl. (I’d love it to be her I’m like her biggest fan)
•Haymitch’s brother (or mother)
•Coin or a character from D13.
•Caesar Flickerman. Honestly he would’ve been higher but I wanted to write out the order based on vibes not probability.
•Either of Peeta’s parents.
•Hazelle. Or Gale’s dad (I HIGHLY doubt this, even more so than anyone else lmao)
•An unknown character from 12.
•Another victor. I wanted to go in more detail about the options within this one but for the sake of not overdoing this semi-rushed post, I’ll leave it at that. There’s a LOT of options within this bullet point though.
•A rebel (from the capital, from the districts. Perhaps even the person who started orchestrating the rebellion…? If that isn’t Plutarch lmao)
•Snow or someone related to Snow, like Tigris or his wife. I doubt this, but a Snow sequel could make sense.
•An unknown/new character. From the districts, the capitol, anywhere.
Or we could get a curveball and have it be from the perspective of someone outside of panem-
Just kidding. I don’t think anyone thinks or wants that lmao.

BRF Spread - Anon Question, 7th of March 2021
This is speculation only.
7th of March, 2021
Question: Will Harry and Meghan divorce?
Interpretation: Will they ever!
The first card that flew out of the deck while I was shuffling was the Ace of Wands. This is a new creative endeavour. Nothing is actualised as yet, but the idea is there. Hidden behind that card was The Empress. This shows a pregnant woman. This woman is hiding behind the Ace of Wands, the new creative idea, using it to obscure her real self. This to me is Meghan Markle. She is thinking of divorcing Harry, but she is hiding her plans behind a pregnancy and the image of the so-in-love, growing happy family (I didn’t say that this was working, but that is what she is doing). Wands can represent PR, so this pregnancy is also a PR stunt - a way to hide her plans and to gain sympathy for herself. It also gives her another child to claim money for when she leaves Harry.
The second card is the Five of Wands. Two people - Harry and Meghan - are facing off with a dragon, which to me represents the BRF. This card is one of conflict, but notice that the picture shows no actual fighting, just the man and the woman waving torches. This tells me that MM and PH are using PR (the torches) to create the illusion of conflict with the BRF (Hello Oprah interview!). While there may be some conflict in fact, that factual conflict is not what MM and PH are showing to the world. The conflict they tell people about is 100% a fabrication of their own making.
The third card is the Three of Wands. This is a card of carrying a plan to an initial triumphant conclusion. Whatever plan MM has (and it is her plan as Harry is not showing up in this spread as anything other than a supporting character) it will initially be successful (like getting an interview with Oprah and airing it on TV, or announcing that she is pregnant). However, and it is a big caveat, there is a lot of hard work ahead to bring this plan to a successful conclusion.
The fourth card is the Ten of Swords. The plan does not work. Things go terribly, terribly wrong. This is the card of someone who is utterly defeated, at rock bottom. They can go now lower. They have no strength or energy left. There is hope in the sunrise on the card, and in the goddess Athene holding back the Furies, but the person in this card is at the end of their limits, especially mentally, as swords is the suit of thoughts. I’m not happy about writing this, but I would not be surprised if the failure of this plan caused PH to go off the deep end mentally and have a complete breakdown. I think there is some sort of betrayal here that hits PH the hardest. MM will turn on him, like the Furies in the image, and do her best to destroy him/rip him to pieces in her anger. At his lowest point, PH will be protected from the Furies/MM by the forces of justice and the law (Athene is the goddess of law, justice, wisdom, and strategy).
The fifth, and last card, is the Three of Swords. Someone is murdered, literally or figuratively, by their past actions, as on the card Clytemnestra and her lover murder her husband King Agamemnon for his past action of sacrificing Clytemnestra’s daughter Iphigenia to the Gods. It is a card of sorrow, heartbreak, and completion. The cycle is finished. Past actions, possibly involving a child, have caught up with MM and PH and come to a brutal conclusion. I see this card as MM (the wife, the married in royal) and her lover destroying PH (the royal in blood) in the media so they can leave and create a new life together.
The underlying energy is that of the Five of Cups. Psyche has brought light into the darkness shrouding her marriage bed, and her husband, Eros, flees from it. There is an energy of one party having fled the marriage - for me that is PH. The other still wants the prestige of the marriage and is pursuing the departed party. The cups show all that has been lost - 4 are knocked over, only one stands upright. From having an abundance of earthly goods (the cups), only one portion is left.
Putting it all together: Yes, PH and MM will divorce. MM has been thinking and planning for this for a while (Ace of Wands, Three of Wands). She may have conceived her second child to get more money out of the BRF when the divorce comes (the Empress). She is trying to portray the BRF as a huge monster and herself as the noble hero fighting against it (Five of Wands). In the long run, it will not work. Things go wrong. PH is physically present in the marriage, but his soul/self left a long time ago (Five of Cups). MM knows this, and is clinging on to the shell of the marriage for her own ends. When the plan of MM falls through, PH will be driven to a breakdown (Ten of Swords), but when he is at his lowest he will be rescued/protected by a force of justice. MM will try to destroy him and while she will not cause his physical death, she will destroy the image he presents to the world (Three of Swords).
The major arcana card in this is the Empress, so those pregnancies of MM are important. The last card, the Three of Swords, shows past actions with respect to their child causing the murder of King Agamemnon. The pregnancies and the children born of them will play a role in this, as past actions in respect of pregnancy/child will be used to destroy PH in the eyes of the public. We reap what we sow.

I love how you thought about the pin more in depth for SOTR ! I haven’t seen anyone talk much about what they think happened to the pin— how they’ll sort of try to rectify removing Madge from the movies !!!
Maybe we’ll see a young Greasy Sae at least in the movies 🤷♀️
Thanks anon ! And yes maybe... Just imagine if the movie version is young Greasy Sae taking the pin but never succeding in selling it (since it looks like the pin is back luck)...
I must admit the change of backstory for the pin is still irritating me hahaha the meaning behind diminishes without Madge and I hope they won't make it worse 🤞🤞

mockingjay pin in sotr
If we see Maysilee with her mockingjay pin, it's either gonna be her wearing it on reaping day, during the interview (though I doubt the stylists would let her) or in the arena. And/or perhaps, after Haymitch wins, her family will want to give it to him as thanks but he'll refuse.
I know Katniss didn't mention the pin on Maysilee in CF but that's probably because she didn't notice. The footage of theses games was focused on the victor, aka Haymitch, plus, my bet is that (as we may see in SOTR) some of it was modified/censored.
Now without having red the book, it's difficult to talk about the movie adaptation. But I believe that since Madge will be absent, a scene with Maysilee wearing the pin pre/during the games won't be enough cause we'll need to understand how it came in the hands of a seller at the Hob.
So maybe a scene where Maysilee's sister gives the canary to Mrs Everdeen (that is if they make it to the movie) and sells/gives away the pin to someone else ? But it has to be someone she cares about and not some random stranger, cause it has sentimental (and "real") value. And I can't see this someone being Haymitch cause he doesn't need to sell it for money. Keeping it hidden and never daring to look at it ? Yes. But giving it away ? Idk.
But maybe it's the direction they'll take after all.
Or maybe, something very similar where Maysilee's family gives/sells her stuff. We see Mrs Everdeen taking the canary or not (please yes) and there's a shot on the mockingjay pin that no one - for now - is taking OR we actually see someone reaching for it. And we'll just have to guess it was pass down from hands to hands until Katniss.
And since we're following Haymitch's story, if we get to see that it's because he will be witnessing these things.

Something with Sunrise on the Reaping that I really hope we might get (if the book focuses on district 12) is young Mrs Everdeen. I actually have a lot of complex thoughts about her (as a character, not just her relationship to Katniss).
And it’s just that she plays a role in the story too. Not just as “Katniss’s Mom” but as a person who lived in twelve. Who lived in the Merchant part of 12, who married someone from the Seam, who helped people in need. Who is, in my opinion, one of the main influences for Prim and what later leads to Prim becoming so advanced so early in medicine. Mrs Everdeen has a name we don’t even know. In fact, she has two names we don’t even know: her first and maiden name.
She had a best friend, who was sent off into the Hunger Games the same year a Víctor from twelve emerged. She knows of Haymitch. Perhaps she knows more of Haymitch than we as the audience already know. Maybe Mr Everdeen and Haymitch were in the same circles. Maybe Mrs Everdeen had rebellious thoughts too; maybe not.
Anyway, I can’t believe I speculated about this stuff casually but now we have a LEGITIMATELY nonzero chance to have these things explored and confirmed. I’m still all over the place with “what I want” SotR to be (it doesn’t matter what I want, SotR will be whatever Suzanne Collins has written it to be; I’m just saying I’ve been thinking about SotR a lot, and how I’m not exactly sure what I’m hoping for with it).
But, it would be amazing to see Mrs Everdeen and Mr Everdeen. To know their names, know more of their stories.
