Here's the proof you need that Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury was a good idea for revitalizing the Gundam franchise. Bandai Namco Holdings announced its 2023 Fiscal Year (FY) sales results on Wednesday, revealing record-breaking revenue for the Gundam IP. Group-wide sales amounted to 131.3 billion yen (about US$967 million) in FY2023, compared to 101.7 billion yen (about US$749 million) in the previous year.

In a March newsletter, Bandai Namco Holdings president Masaru Kawaguchi specifically highlighted The Witch From Mercury for acquiring new fans among young people and women. He also highlighted the Gundam Aerial gunpla models as strong sellers.

Bandai Namco Holdings publishes financial reports as far back as FY2006. These reports reveal that Gundam's sales have not always followed a linear curve. Sales briefly dropped in FY2009-FY2010, as well as FY2015 and in FY2017-2018. However, there has been remarkable growth since FY2020, which also coincides with the increase of Gunpla sales throughout the pandemic. Case in point: 60.5 billion yen (US$45 million) of Gundam's 131.3 billion yen in sales in FY2023 was through the toys and hobby business, up from 44.2 billion yen (US$33 million) in the last financial year.

Other major Bandai Namco IPs to see growth in the last financial year include the perennial favorite Dragon Ball at 144.5 billion yen (US$1 billion)���up from 127.6 billion (US$940 million). One Piece also climbed up to 86.3 billion yen (US$636 million) from 44.1 billion yen (US$32 million) last year, reflecting the success of One Piece Film Red.

Overall, the company's net sales were 111.3% compared to the previous financial year, and the sector also saw a 103.5% gross profit. The sector to see the biggest growth was "Amusement," referring to amusement parks, arcades, and other public entertainment facilities. This segment grew by 127% from the previous financial year, indicating its recovery from COVID-19 restrictions.

Completed what must collectively be my 15th or so full rewatch of Cowboy Bebop since the days when it first aired on Adult Swim & just getting to those final episodes reminds me of why I consider the Bebop Crew to stand alongside the likes of the Strawhat Pirates in One Piece & Guts’ Party in BERSERK as one of the all time best Found Families in fiction.

Similar to what the creators accomplished again in Samurai Champloo, the creators of Cowboy Bebop have a fantastic knack for convincingly splitting up a wayward cast of misfits while simultaneously still making it an emotional gut punch seeing a family in the purest sense of the word, a group of people whose faults and talents enrich & complement each other so beautifully and naturally that their eventual mutual love is a matter of course (even if they don’t admit as much), split into their own separate lives to possibly never see each other again. It’s such a bittersweet feeling that never fails to make me teary eyed during those last handful of Bebop episodes.

6 episodes of pure unadulterated mobile suit bliss. Simple in it's Gundam lore and yet complex in it's deep straight to the point story. This has me wanting to play Armored Core 6 when I get off work . Speaking of which I gotta order that new Gundam Breaker 4 game immediately. I'm feeling real inspired right now 😏 🤖

Beleaguered after a month of devastating losses, the Federation agrees to meet with a delegation from Zeon to discuss surrender.

Revil, who was able to see the true state of the Zeon homeland after his capture at Loum, is rescued by EFF agents in time to deliver a speech that will rouse the Federation into continuing the war:

Revil's intervention results in the Earth Federation and Principality of Zeon signing the Antarctic Treaty – banning the use of colony drops, nuclear weapons, and other means of mass destruction for the remainder of the conflict.

"Fellow citizens of the Earth Federation, I speak to you now not only as General Revil, commander of our armed forces, but as Johann Abraham Revil, a survivor –like many of you here– of this horrible war. Despite the innumerable losses, despite the state our Federation is in, I appeal to you all: Zeon is exhausted! They have become low on ships, weapons, troops, even ammunition! Why, then, should we surrender to Zeon?

"Let us not forget the arrogance of Degwin Sodo Zabi, who had usurped power within Zeon, proclaiming the people of Zeon as 'the chosen people.' He justified the idea that we of Earth are bound by Earth's gravity, stuck in archaic ways of thinking, incapable of grasping the new changes of life – and because of this, Zeon has no right to listen to the Earth Federation. However, although Degwin Zabi may be wrong about us as a whole, I will admit to him that if there are any true evils within our Earth Federation, it is the weak-kneed, bureaucratic leaders of our government – unable to ever think for themselves, sinking into their own corruption.

"However, this does not excuse Degwin Zabi for attempting to start a dynasty of Zeon dictators! Even if we do the impossible and recognize the Principality of Zeon as a sovereign nation, we will never sink to our knees in surrender! The Earth Federation was founded on the ideals of individual rights, the crystallization of knowledge within Earth. If not for the Federation government, then mankind would never have even ventured into the starry heavens of outer space.

"But now, Degwin Zabi's son, Gihren Zabi, wishes to take his father's vision a step further: by saying the Federation is weak and backwards in its ways of thinking, Zeon has the right to slaughter everyone who stands in the way of progress! Does this excuse the death of four billion people? No! The Federation will not excuse his monstrous actions!

"And so, fellow citizens of the Earth Federation, will Gihren send Luna 2 into Earth? No! Does Zeon have the ability to make troops from nowhere? No! Does Zeon, despite these facts, have the capability of defeating the Earth Federation? No! Gihren is hoping that by bluffing and sleight of hand, coupled with the loss of four billion lives, that the Earth Federation will surrender to him. However, because of my good fortune, I've witnessed the truth, and I shall reiterate it: Zeon is exhausted!

"Now, more than ever, we mustn't falter to their demands! We must rise up, as one unified Earth Federation, and defeat Zeon! Long live the Earth Federation!"

Char : So, you're new here. I kinda like yourself in doing favors minor extra curriculars, I told anyone that I was gonna be a major hit bro, your looks and design of yourself reminds me of one of them Gainax characters. We got some food, drinks, and yes, we do have entertainment.

Machu : So this is where you hang out, right?

Char : Nah, I'm just good, me and Amuro you used winging it!

Machu : Yes, Indeed.

Machu : We're just glad that you have sensitivity of being new to the company. Bandai Namco offered us, a major supply of sunny D. You like Sunny D, and not just purple stuff.

Amuro : That's grape juice.

Machu : Well, most of all. I do a lot of fun things. You know, you guys are cool giant robots, despite being a girl, I am interested.

Duo Maxwell : Hey girl! What up! Name's Duo! Pilot of Deathscythe, the name of my giant robot.

Machu : I thought Deathscythe was the name of a weapon class to Soul Eater

Duo Maxwell : Hello, Soul Eater is Done Eater! Those guys have been taking advantage of my robot's name. And I had no choice but to sue them for fraud!

Nyaan : Yes, Soul Eater was that name for a long time, but it's also the name of a weapon from PSO.

Duo Maxwell : You must be the new girl, Nyaan was it?

Nyaan : Seems, normally.

Duo Maxwell : Yeah. Tell it to my broskis. Hopefully your show would be amazing when it comes out.

Nyaan : So kid. Anything interested with giant robots?

Machu : Well, there's this one thing I'd like to know about it. I must stay vigilante and ergo, I reminded myself that my looks and design remind me of Someone from Soul Eater. Kimial Diehl was it?

Heero : Perhaps you look like one of them Pokemon Characters, cool design about yourself and you would be definitely a girl show.

Kira Yamato : Well no concern, but I dig giant robots, chicks dig giant robots. Even everyone knows about giant robots.

Sayla : Say...You wouldn't know about giant robots, do you. I would happen to pilot robots. Piloting a giant robots is a unisex thing for boys and girls giving harmony to machines. We love it.

Char : Also, I got you this cookie and a drink, tough luck for such a new pilot of the show.

Sayla : It's all for the greater goods.

*Mic tapping*

Domon : Scuse me, can I have your attention please. As we all know that welcomed the new kid to the company, I'm gonna glad that we and Evangelion are doing something creative. We are mourning for the loss of their old studio Gainax, that took the allegations of having money probelms since the ending drove Shinji into a mental facility.

Domon, also : All is good.

All : All is good.

Domon : Them Gundam players are gonna be ballin on the hottest newest show in all of Japan and the entire planet! We welcomed to our newest star who's gonna chill in our pad!

Mari : And don't forget about that Studio Khara was the one who changed us, I understand why we mourn the loss of our beloved studio that changed us forever, Gainax may be gone by the hands of lawsuits, but when it comes to honor the Gainax memorial, we've decided that it's going for us to start a new leaf. Bringing Gundam to fame! We welcome Machuu, Nyaan, and whoever this guy was, I'm sure we're still getting his name.

Mari, also : No offense, I know Yurinism can be a thing for a giant robot show.

Meer Campbell : Except the part where you don't ever know about that something happened to the studio.

Haruko : I guess that my story is...I was happily honor Gainax for my debut on adult swim, Gainax gave every aspect to the Syfy channel.

Machu : Umm. This is too nervous for me. Since studio Sunrise and Khara are going to collab with my show in development, I don't know how to say this, I maybe look good, I'm gonna be the coolest show ever to exist, I'm gonna be showing one thing to you all. With my newest robot done by both studios that made giant robots, I would like to know thing in my show. That I, ummm...Ummm...

Heero : Go on, what would you do in Gundam battles?

Machu : (nervously) Well, I guess that what I can do in Gundam Battles...Is umm, uhh...

Amuro : What do you do in a giant robot battle? Please, tell them what kind of battles do you participate.

Machu : (determined) I do Battle Clans! That's what I'm about to do in Gundam Battles! doing Battle Clans with my new giant robot!

Amuro : Battle Clans? What in the world is a Battle Clan? How is Battle Clan is really a thing for Gundam battles?

Machu : Also, if you don't mind, my name is Amate Yuzuriha.

Amuro : Wait, your last name's Yuzuriha? But isn't Yuzuriha the name of one them shounen jumpers?

Machu/Amate : That's what she is, it's a namesake for both Yuzuriha, I'm the new Yuzuriha.

All : Ohhh. There was another Yuzuriha that we didn't know.

Amuro : Well, Amate Yuzuriha, since you're gonna be the studio's newest and hottest star of the Gundam community in the world, we are glad that all Gundam pilots are happily to...

Trowa : Help! Help! We're being attacked by Clans, Battle Clans are attacking!

Amuro : Wait, why would the Battle Clans would attack us?

Machu/Amate : Uhh, Mr. Ray. I was talking about those guys.

Amuro : Huh?

*MGS EXCLAMATION MARK*

(realizing the Clans from Battletechs)

Amuro : Ahhh, those Battle Clans. Not those guys again! You just had to say the trigger word.

Machu/Amate : I know. It's not my fault.

Char : DARN YOU, CLANS FROM BATTLETECHS!

(About to be stomped by the Clans' robot as Amuro and Amate hold each other)

Amuro : (panicking) This is going to hurt-Real BAAAAAAD!!!

*CRUSH*

(changes to reality)

Amuro : And that's why, Amate Yuzuriha, is why Battle Clans from Battletechs are the superior collective type of giant robot pilots, but mark my words, If I ever see those battle clans on our property, they're in for a nasty welcome.

Amate Yuzuriha : Which is why I must be careful, on saying stuff about Battle Clans.

Amuro : Indeed. Enjoy your new pad, see ya after New Years! Letters!

(closes door)

Machu/Amate : So, now that we're doing things that we can do, what are we gonna do now? So we must get well done, and be prepared for tomorrow. I guess we might chill out on the chair.

Nyaan : Me too. We're just gonna wait till peak levels have been reach. Cool pad by the way.

Machu/Amate : Note. There's two pieces of cake from Sulemio's wedding. Wanna try one?

Nyaan : Sure I would love a piece of cake. You're the greatest kid that will ever..

*Door knocking*

Nyaan : Huh?

Shinji : Hey, I am liking your new pad, you got some food, drinks, and of course, entertainment. Sweet! Remember this is what you've been doing for yourselves. I talked to my insurance agent and Mari said yes! I'm really digging it! Also, have you seen my robot? That robot went missing since day one.

Machu/Amate : Your robot. But weren't you supposed to be the kid, that wanted to get in the robot?

Nyaan : We seen it. It must've been chilling out or something.

Mari : Okay, girls. I got Amate Yuzuriha's official Gundam license and this will be snappy for you to--

Asuka : Hey girls! Since you're new to us and Sunrise, Shinji's robot would like to have a word with you.

Nyaan : What robot?

Asuka : You know, the Eva. The one that we made him to get in the robot...FOR THE 412TH TIME! Also, you might wanna run for your lives.

Amate & Nyaan : Uh-oh.

(Shinji's robot storms in and starts attacking everyone)

All : (shouting indistinctly)

Amate/Machu : Yeah, you might also wanting to be talking about Eva robots. They are good but seriously dangerous.
