SAND LAND Episode 1: The Legendary Spring

There's really no two ways about it, Sunrise (+ Anima & Kamikaze Douga) absolutely nailed Akira Toriyama's world with this first episode. Equally impressive though is their insane 3D work.

I'm a big fan of Sand Land so I don't have much to add from a narrative perspective, but the CGI work on this series is actually incredible. Of course, this is an episodic version of the movie, so it's going to have quality that knocks your socks off, but this is the sort of work that gives Orange a run for its money.

Between this trio, Toei, and Orange, the future of CGI anime has never looked brighter. It's incredible work, impressive awareness, and peerless talent on display.

Because of that though, it just highlights the hack work that the rest of the industry has been doing. These studios have a near perfect understanding of what you can and can't do with 3D anime, and they have the experience and ability to deliver on what they *can* do. It's a massive difference to CGI being used to cut corners or cost on the majority of series, and it absolutely shows.

Hopefully studios learn from this incredible work and begin to pivot, but until then I'll be happily enjoying the seven episodes of Sand Land that are out currently (and periodically sharing my thoughts on them).

Chuchu : (in horror) Can't get sleep, no sleep, no chill, I need my meds! Why did I look at the horrors that I witnessed!?

Suletta : Uhh, what went wrong?

Chuchu : I'll tell you what's wrong. You two making out, while I saw you making out with Mrs Rembran and you...you had to do it, didn't you? That's why I didn't looked away and I realized one thing...your sexting got me blind!

(takes off shades to reveal that her eyes are all white)

Suletta : I think you accidentally bleached yourself.

Chuchu : No, you literally blind me with seeing you having a girlish thing with Mrs. Rembran! What the f*** did I tell anyone about not teaching you about the meaningful life about the affair of sex!? Didn't we taught you this about in Sex Class? You got me blind and now I'm going to heal myself with Bleach! Now you excuse me, I gotta go make out with someone in the house.

Suletta : [To viewers] You think that she'll able to have her sight again?

Chuchu : Oh sh**!

*TIRE SCREECHING+CRASH+CAT SCREECHING!*

Suletta : [To Viewers] Guess not.

Chuchu : Can I literally go to a doctor!? I'm practically fine that I can't see while driving this thing!

Guel : Oh great! My car!

Colorful (2010)

I watched this movie tonight...

I was surprised.. I knew it looked good... but it's been a really long time since a movie captivated me so much I sat through it all...

Hell, even suzume couldn't captivate me enough to watch it all in one go, and it's a movie I was really hyped to see and really liked...

This is my 730th anime, and I'm glad I saw it..

I haven't been feeling great lately, and it really got me in some good feels...

Spoilers ahead;

A lot of the movie was easy to guess, like Makoto being Makoto in the end, but..

It kept me guessing a lot..

I wondered what was up with Hiruka and if she and Makoto would end up together..

I was sad and surprised when she said she'd do him for just ¥20000

And I was glad when he turned her down...

I watched it in dub so a lot of it made me cringe because the voice acting was a bit.. off a lot... but somehow, I find it gave the movie a charm...

I really liked it, and its one of the rare anime I've watched lately that I didn't stop to search up the voice actors every couple of minutes, even though I recognised them all but couldn't place them...

I'm also intregued by Shoko.. she def gave me autistic vibes, and I liked how awkward she was.

I'm still wondering if Purarpura was an angel or not.. his position is kinda left unmentioned...

Anyway...

I've been feeling pretty down lately and pretty suicidal, but this movie reminded me that there's still a lot of color out there.. makes me wanna see it.. makes me want to make more art, so I can touch people's feelings the way that movie did for me...

I'm really alive happy right now.

Is the anime Aura Battler Dunbine the prototype for Vision of Escaflowne?

This sword and sorcery meets mecha anime was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Studio Sunrise between 1983 and 1988, and is an “isekai” about a brave young Japanese man who is transported to the parallel world of Byston Well and forced to fight in a war using giant mechas called Aura Battlers. 

I have only seen clips and still images from this anime, but I think the art style has some similarities with Escaflowne. Although the human characters have that classic 80′s action anime vibe and don’t look much like the Escaflowne characters, the Aura Battlers have the same curvy “Art Nouveau” aesthetic as the Guymelefs. The Zaibach Alseides Guymelefs look a LOT like the Aura Battlers in terms of design, and the hero is wearing an outfit that looks like a more colourful version of the Dragonslayers’ uniforms. 

Beyond the mecha design, the series is often highly praised for its exciting plot and sympathetic characters (especially strong and complex female characters) as well as the detailed world building that fuses medieval fantasy with science fiction elements. Those are the same reasons many folks love Escaflowne! 

One day, I’d like to watch the whole series and see how many “inspirations” for Escaflowne I can find in Aura Battler Dunbine. If you’ve seen this anime, what is your opinion of it?

What if Aura Battler Dunbine is secretly set in the same world as Escaflowne, and it is just another epoch of Gaea’s history? What a cross over fanfiction that would make!
