A Pennsylvania nurse already charged with killing two patients in her care through lethal doses of insulin has been hit with fresh charges after sheconfessed to trying to kill 19 people at different rehabilitation centers where she worked, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Heather Pressdee, 41, allegedly administered excessive amounts of insulin to 19 patients — some of whom were diabetic and others not — at five different care facilities from 2020 to this year. Ultimately, 17 patients in her care have died, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office said.

As a result, new charges were filed against her Thursday: two counts of first-degree murder, 17 counts of attempted murder and 19 counts of neglect of a care-dependent person, in connection with the 19 patients she allegedly mistreated, Attorney General Michelle Henry said.

Prosecutors noted that Pressdee was charged with first-degree murder in cases where “physical evidence is available to support the cause of death,” and attempted murder in cases where the victims either survived the excessive dose of insulin or the cause of death could not be determined.

She had already been charged in May for allegedly mistreating three patients, two of whom died, bringing the total number of allegedly mistreated patients to 22.

Pressdee would typically administer the insulin during overnight shifts when there was low staffing and the emergencies “would not prompt immediate hospitalization,” prosecutors said.

“If Pressdee sensed the victim would ‘pull through’ there is a pattern of her taking additional measures to try to kill the victims before they could be sent to the hospital by either administering a second dose of insulin or the use of an air embolism to ensure death,” the criminal complaint in the case said.

The alleged victims ranged in age from 43 to 104.

The complaint said Pressdee, whose nursing license has been suspended, “admitted to harming, with the intent to kill, all patients named in this affidavit.”

The two first-degree murder charges are in connection with two patient deaths at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

On March 24-25, 2021, she allegedly intentionally administered insulin and an air embolism to a patient, identified by the initials G.S., with the intent to kill him and which ultimately caused his death, the complaint said.

Then on April 30-May 1, 2023, she administered insulin to a patient with the initials N.C., also leading to their death, the complaint said.

The alleged abuse unfolded while Pressdee was employed as a registered nurse at Concordia at Rebecca Residence; Belair Healthcare and Rehabilitation; Quality Life Services - Chicora; Premier Armstrong Rehabilitation and Nursing Center; and Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Pressdee was arraigned Thursday, waived her preliminary hearing, and remains in custody at Butler County Prison without bail.

It's not clear if she has entered a plea. NBC News has reached out to her attorney for comment.

Authorities started watching Pressdee after a family member of a patient who died told the Bureau of Narcotics Investigation and Drug Control that Pressdee was involved in the improper administration of insulin at Quality Life Service - Chicora. An investigation found Pressdee had a “pattern” of being investigated for “abusive behavior towards patients and/or staff” at her past jobs, “resulting in Pressdee then resigning or being terminated,” the complaint said.

The filing revealed that former co-workers told investigators there were suspicions during Pressdee’s previous employment that she was “intentionally harming patients” and she had been “reprimanded for making up her own insulin doses.”

When she worked at Belair Healthcare and Rehabilitation, from April 2021 to February 2022, as an assistant director of nursing, she was suspended pending an internal investigation into co-worker concerns regarding “a pattern of individuals passing under Pressdee’s care.” However, that probe did not uncover any identifiable evidence to support those allegations.

In truth, she hadn't been to work until today. She hadn't thought she was ready to go back after that night. But it was fine, she had plenty of PTO saved up that she was able to take three weeks off. She almost went for another, but she had bills to pay and a pet to take care of. So she all but forced herself to go back to work, tightening the straps that kept a new mask in place. It was one she would only wear to work now. The rest of time? Well, the world got what it got from Misty Quigley from now on.

Lunch had rolled around and she was feeling antsy, cooped up. So she, for the first time in the fifteen years she had worked at Sunnyview, took her lunch break elsewhere. It was a moderate drive, would possibly push her over the hour she was allowed, but it didn't much matter to her. She soon pulled into a parking spot and got out, locking her car before making the short walk.

Knuckles were soon knocking on door as a small smile spread onto her face. It only grew when the door opened and she was beaming up at the other woman. "Hi! Hope you don't mind I stopped by, but I didn't really want to take my lunch break in a little room," she chuckled, hand raising to adjust glasses.

Upper District Schools

Ironically, much like Lower District, the Upper District also only has 3 main schools. This is in part because it's not uncommon for students to only be at the school for certain classes, while the rest of their education is provided by private tutors hired by their guardians. These schools are highly selective when it comes to hiring staff, with frequent donations by the Big Three, there are more than enough funds to be so selective for who they hire. There scholarships offered to students who live outside the district though the selection process can be grueling. For families willing to pay out of pocket or for those trying to get their children more in line, there is Northview Academy. A private school about 3 hours drive from the Upper District. There are still buildings separating the students in sections of: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. There is a curfew in place and a zero tolerance policy for reckless behavior, but considering many students families make frequent donations to the school, there's more than one way to get away with breaking the rules. Scholarships are also offered at the Academy, but it is even more competitive, with an emphasis placed on what the student can hope to provide in return in the form of good press for the school.

Still, her mother’s nurse has been… Interesting. “My mother is giving me some… Well, some difficulties—something about me poisoning the food?” She winces delicately.

No, no she should not say 'Nurse Quigley.' Misty knows better than to let anyone call her nurse anything, knows very well that it could cost her her licensure — not to mention her job, but the hand on her shoulder feels good and the importance Margarethe places on her name feels even better and the correction doesn't come, only the shifting of glasses as she peers up starry eyed at the woman towering above her from her perch on the rickety little office chair, her hands falling from keyboard to lap.

Margarethe's mother had been a bit of a 'Jekyll and Hyde' patient since arriving at Sunnyview, with Misty herself in the precarious position of catching both sides of her personality on any given day. She'd seen her treat custodial staff like dirt and physicians like saints, and — from the safety of the hallway — had heard her treat Margarethe worse than any of the rest of them by far.

If the widow has been poisoning her mother's food, could Misty truly blame her? Could she say that she wouldn't do the same if put in the other woman's position?

A smile spreads across Misty's lips as she cocks her head, trying for 'comforting' as she places her own hand over the one at her shoulder. "Sometimes patients can get a bit paranoid at this stage of life. Their minds start to slip and struggle to…find a place to put the blame for what's happening to them. I'm afraid Mrs. Ten Broek might be reaching that precipice." Something knowing worms its way into the flash of her teeth as Misty continues. "I mean after all, an upset tummy doesn't mean she's been poisoned. I can start coming in with you, if you'd like? Just to have another pair of eyes in the room." An alibi.

Enterococci bacteria found in Nova Scotia beaches

Known for its scenic beauty and as a favourite destination to cool off for locals and tourists alike, Queensland Beach and Bayswater Beach are temporarily closed due to water quality concerns.

“We did our regular testing for both Queensland and Bayswater Tuesday and we got the results on Friday and unfortunately, the samples did not meet the requirements of the Canadian Recreation Water Quality Guidelines,” explained Paul D’eon, director of Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

Marine biologist Herb Vandermeulen says sample testing like this is critical.

“You���re looking for bacterial count that might indicate other types of disease organisms being present. It’s not Enterococci as a bacterial group that are a problem, it’s other associated disease organisms that might be in that mix.”

The water testing samples showed traces of Enterococci bacteria, which can cause clinical infections to humans, including Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

These can cause:

urinary tract infections (UTIs)

bacteremia

infective endocarditis

meningitis

intra-abdominal infections

wound infections

The province does testing of all 25 supervised beaches across the province.

“The only ones that we’ve tested are Queensland and Bayswater and we know those ones did not meet quality but we know nothing about the other beaches in the surrounding area,” said D’eon.

This is not the first time high bacterial levels have been found in Nova Scotia’s waters.

Earlier in the week, blue-green algae was detected in Long Lake, while this bacteria is different to enterococci, Vandermeulen said it is connected.

“It usually comes from some sort of sources that flushed into lake or marine beaches and those nutrients that come in by a similar manner can lead to these blue-green algae blooms [and] these cyanobacterial blooms in lake,” he said. “So it’s a whole package of things happening, and unfortunately in urban environments, it becomes more prevalent.”

Vandermeulen said particularly for lakes, Nova Scotia is seeing toxin production without seeing a bloom. He said this needs to be investigated.

“In the province, we don’t have anyone that researches this. We need to check this out much more carefully than we have in the past. Otherwise, pets are going to keep drinking the water and dying.”

Jeff Goodall, a veterinarian at the Sunnyview Animal Care Centre, said both people and their pets should remain off the contaminated waters in the meantime.

“Sometimes they’ll go pale blue mucus membrane,” Goodall said of pets drinking contaminated water. “They’ll start vomiting. That’s usually the neurotoxin stage, and sincerely, by the time clients realize it’s happening, it’s too late.”

The province has collected ocean samples from Queensland and Bayswater Beach for additional testing on Friday. Those results will come in on Monday, which will determine if people need to continue to stay out of the water.

                           With Shauna having left after their somewhat failed attempt of doing a run through of what to do, she thought it would be best to monitor the forums. The last she had checked, there was only the missing persons poster on Adam with the usual information and messages from his family and friends. Of course there were a few threads talking about the artists' disappearance but she hadn't batted an eye at any of them; they were all filled with UFO's took him or that Big Foot had got a hold of him. They were all comical assumptions that didn't have her worrying.

That was until she logged in and scrolled down a bit and read a comment made by a 'puttingthesickinforensics' who seemed to know too much. After the initial panic wore off and Misty took her time to figure out a plan, she messaged this puttingthesickinforensics to see if she could turn their attention elsewhere. So she shot them a message, telling them about her own theories and how she thought it was one of her patients. It wasn't too far out there as some other users mentioned serial killers and how it was possible that Adam was picked up by one of them. Plus, there were a few patients that hadn't remained at Sunnyview, who had been there for just physical therapy or short term care.

Message was sent and Misty was hoping the fish would take the bate. She had to help Shauna ( as well as Taissa, Natalie, and herself ) from getting caught. Because as much as she wished and liked to believe that they got everything that could lead the artist back to Shauna...she had a bad feeling in her gut. She couldn't shake the feeling that they had missed something vital, something that would give the police too much information if his disposed body pieces were to be found.

"It's fine...it'll be fine," she said aloud, eyes glancing to Caligula who perched across from her. "We'll have this sorted out in no time. Get this wannabe off our tracks...send them on a little wild goose chase..."
