MARCH 2ND, 2024
A POLITICAL RENDEZVOUS at THE CLOISTERS
"You begin saving the world by saving one man at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics." — Charles Bukowski
No one knows how both parties haven't clawed at each other's necks yet, co-existing under the same ornate roof. Nor is anyone surprised that a protest had formed outside of the venue, blocking one of the access streets.
While officers and those with political capital have been warned of it, the venue is grand enough, shielded enough, that the chants aren't heard by guests and attendees. The rich and powerful still get to enjoy their day, inside a bubble, as they always do.
And they all gather together at the main hall — as auction results are just about to roll in.
OOC INFO
PART THREE. There is no need to wrap or drop Part One or Part Two threads.
AUCTION
THE AUCTION IS NEAR ITS ENDING. Please follow @wbauction to participate. The auction will end on March 24th (Sunday) at 10pm EST. The last bid placed before 10pm, so long as it fits the rules listed on the item post, will be the winning one.
CHALLENGES
All challenges from Part 1 and Part 2 still stand. As always, please post completed challenges to our #point-depository channel so the admins can tally your points.
STORE
THE MEDIA SCOOP. [ PURCHASE FOR 1000 POINTS ] (2 AVAILABLE — 0 CLAIMED)
Can be purchased by any member of the media. This person gets to overhear some hot tea during the event and publicize it. Whoever purchases this slot must publish an article (or other media-oriented piece, depending on their character. For example: a TV host may write a self para of a live report, etc) on dash. How much information is publicized should be plotted and consented between the muns involved and any characters or establishments it may impact.
THE MAGIC KEY. [ PURCHASE FOR 2500 POINTS ] (2 AVAILABLE — 0 CLAIMED)
Can be purchased by any character. With this purchase, your character can jump into any event thread on dash of their choosing, no matter how private. The interaction will then automatically become a three-way thread. The only way to ‘reverse’ a Magic Key is by purchasing ‘Not So Fast!’, which is always available in our Burnie Bucks store.
THE BLAME KEY. [ PURCHASE FOR 2500 POINTS] (1 AVAILABLE - 0 CLAIMED)
Can be purchased by any character. With this purchase, your character gets to do something at the event (this can be anything — as silly or as dark as you'd like) and escape consequences, since the blame will be placed on a different character of your choosing. The only way to 'reverse' a Blame Key is by purchasing 'Not So Fast!', which is always available in our Burnie Bucks store.
THE HIJACK [ PURCHASE FOR 3500 POINTS ] (1 AVAILABLE — 0 CLAIMED)
Hijack an auction item. Damage it, steal it — the sky is almost the limit.
BY THE END OF PART 3...
— The two protesters who acquired the most amount of points during the event will be arrested by the two law enforcement characters who acquired the most amount of points during the event.
— The two government characters who acquired the least amount of points during the event will be trapped by the protest, with difficulty to leave the venue.
— The government party that ends the auction with the largest amount of donations will premiers the polls with a 5% advantage.
— The character who acquired the most amount of points during the event, out of all characters, will get to choose one reward from the options offered by the admins.
*Exclusively for this, points will be considered per character, not per mun.
PSA
If you're feeling unsure about how many points you've earned so far, and whether it will get you what you're hoping for, don't worry! Points will be considered until March 29th, at 10pm EST. That means, you still have a week to collect points and compete for the spot you want. You can get points the 'traditional' way by posting replies to threads, and we also have challenges we offered on Part 1, 2, and 3 that are worth more points each time you complete them. You can use any of the challenges posted for the event, even if they were prompted in earlier Parts.
HAVE FUN!

Where to Watch ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest’ — 2024 Edition
Blind Items Revealed #2
February 10, 2017
With his popularity waning because he is not on television each week, this A list mogul is threatening to pull his production deal with the parent company unless he gets back on the air now. Thirsty f**ker. Always likes you to think he prefers being behind the scenes. Nope. His ego is HUUUUUUGE. So, now the company is going to overpay for a worn out franchise from a different network.

Blind Items Revealed #5
July 13, 2021
Except for making some things blind items, I have left it entirely in the words of the tipster.
I was invited to spend time this past Memorial weekend hanging out with this animator/writer/illustrator/one hit wonder (#1) who had a short lived series on this almost network several years ago. The show attracted a significant cult following when it aired on (#2) and this person still has a strong fan base within his subsection of pop culture. To this day, he never appears out in public where he might be recognized or allows any photos to be taken without wearing his signature disguise that he’s worn since the inception of his show. (He didn’t wear it Memorial weekend when out with me. I completely didn’t recognize him when I first saw him.) Everything online, including his Wikipedia bio, is fake and written by him. He will do anything and everything to keep people from knowing any personal info about him. He desperately attempts to project his age much younger than his 54 years and while his real first name is very close to his fake persona, his last name is not.
To say that he is a horribly racist individual doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of his deep seated racism. A very nice and genuine friend of his that I met last year, he refers to as, “that rich Jew”. He believes everyone in the Little Armenia section of LA hates white people. He was upset that his neighborhood is being “invaded by Mexicans”. A kind friend of his, who happens to manage a very popular bar, graciously let us cut to the front of the line to get in because he was getting angrier and angrier at having to wait. When talking about his friend that got us in the bar, he continually made disparaging comments about the fact that the guy only dates black men. He repeatedly said throughout the weekend that he doesn’t like inviting this person to his house for parties because he brings a boyfriend and hates having black people in his house.
He texted me Sunday afternoon and inquired about lunch and thrift shopping (something we have in common). I said sure and hoped that Saturday’s deplorable behavior was just due to having an off day. Nope. As soon as I picked him up, he was in a horrid mood. When I called him out on it, he said that he could just not talk to me at all (tempting but awkward). He asked what I had done all morning. I told him the fun I had and the great places in LA I visited. He laughed and said he thought I was probably sitting in my hotel room waiting for him to call. (Pro tip: when in LA be sure to visit the immersive art exhibit at Cakeland LA.) I suggested we eat lunch at El Coyote. I had always wanted to eat there. He got more irate and asked who I thought I was that I could pick where we ate. Not wanting to argue with someone with the temperament of a four year old, I let him pick lunch. While waiting for our food he asks me who I think is gay in LA. (I’ve been an avid reader of CDAN for over a decade; I know my Hollywood gays.) First name that comes to mind is the mogul (#3). He says he’s heard that #3 might be gay. Next up on my list is the talk show host/game show creator (#4)’s ex boy toy, (#5). He says that he has met #5 numerous times and there is no way he can be gay because he is so nice and gives back to the community. (That may be true but Helen Keller could tell #5 is gay.) I tell him I’ve always thought this A+ list mostly movie actor (#6) was gay. He replied with the antiquated and false notion that #6 can’t be gay because he’s married with kids. He wasn’t joking. He actually believes this! While we were dining outside, he randomly starts yelling at me out of nowhere. People stopped eating and were staring until I told him to calm down because someone was going to call the police on him. His ability to go from zero to unhinged, screaming rage is only surpassed in speed by JLo’s ability to call the paps when lunching with Ben.
After lunch, we went thrift shopping. The first spot we hit, he found a book he wanted to buy. It was $2.75. At the counter, when told the price, he said he didn’t have any cash. I stepped up and paid for the book. As soon as I got outside, I was berated for paying for the book. He said he had cash and he told the sales clerk he didn’t to see if he could get the book for less money. It was $2.75. The money was going to a charitable organization! He literally complained about everything, including his constant inability, due to his size, to easily get out of my rental car, a Ford Mustang. He argued that getting out of my own car, a Mini Cooper, would be much easier. (No way.)
After I dropped him off at home, I had a delightful dinner at El Coyote. I decided that there was no way I could spend another nanosecond with him. Life is too short to waste time with someone like this. I used my points on Southwest to fly to CA. To change my flight to an earlier one would have cost me over 28,000 points. I called Southwest and asked if I could please change my flight and not be charged the additional points. The customer service rep said she would need a reason to tell her supervisor why an exception should be made. I told her who I spent my weekend with and what had transpired. Southwest allowed me to change my flight without using any of my points; even they realized what an ass he is. I do feel sorry for his long suffering partner and the unmitigated nightmare it must be to live with him. He’s looking to restart his career with another series. Miraculously, he got a pitch meeting with some executives at Amazon. To the surprise of no one but himself, there was never a second meeting. This man is a vile, narcissistic human being.

Mattana Ministry Welcomes You To
Sunday Sermon: 3 November 2024
Theme: Job and His Friends & Communion
Music:

https://youtu.be/5dwNdZT_f-o
Communion Music
https://youtu.be/9oCNwIA6xLc
Communion.
We are going to use the Communion now, and here every person can please use their preferred elements for the grape juice and the bread.
Communion Scripture: Matt. 26: 26-28
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Symbolic:
Bread that is broken - Jesus’ Body on the Cross for our sins.
Grape Juice - Jesus’ Blood that wash us clean from our sins, for us to stand clean before God.
(Parents with little children, explain carefully to the children the seriousness of the Communion, Jesus died on the Cross for our sins, and every time that we use the Communion we remember that there was a Cross and that Jesus died for our sins. We use the Communion to give thanks to Jesus and to always remember that He had died for our sins.
Every parent knows how much their children do understand about the Cross Death, and how to explain it to them. I would however invite everyone to allow their children to make use of the Communion, even if the little child only understand that there must be prayed and that there must be an atmosphere of respect)
Scripture:
Message:
We have been looking at Job and his friends for the past few weeks. We got to know them a little bit and did a bit of a character study of each of the characters in the Book of Job. Today we are going to see how it applies to our lives.
We all know the story of Job. Job is this righteous, God-fearing man, and Satan asks God if Satan can test him and see if his faith will stand. The story takes place around 1635 BC in Edom. Job lived in Uz, southeast of the Dead Sea. Job had seven sons, three daughters, 7,000 flocks, 3000 camels, 500 pairs of cattle, 500 donkeys, and many slaves in the beginning of the story. So Job was a rich man.
Job also had three very good friends: Eliphaz, the Temanite; Bildad, the Suhiel; and Zofar, the Naamanite. During the story, all three of them get a chance to talk to Job about his circumstances and about God.
Last week, we got to know Elihu, who we first heard speaking in Job 32.
Let's see how Job and his friends apply to our lives:
Job:
We see that Job went through the whole process of mourning:
He mourns his children and his wealth.
He addresses his wife about her fighting with him over his faith in the midst of their hardships.
Job begins to fall into depression and feels discouraged.
He wants to complain about his hardships; he feels disgusted and ridiculous.
He rebukes his friends and rejects their comfort.
Job appeals to God and reproaches his friends.
Job is in denial.
Job recognizes and acknowledges that God is his redeemer, though he doesn't know where God is in his troubles.
Job thinks about his happy past, where he had his children and his wealth.
Job doubts God's righteousness
Job confesses his guilt.
What is very noteworthy, however, is that even though Job went through the entire grieving process, he still held on to his faith.
Eliphaz
Job's friends were loyal and came right when Job needed them. They mourned and wept with Job.
Eliphaz marvels at Job's discouragement.
He says that Job must trust in his piety and everything will be all right. He reminds Job of his piety and that he must hold fast to it.
He asks Job if there is anyone who can stand righteously before God.
He sends Job back to God.
He says God is good and that Job must take the hardship because everything will work out for the better.
He questions the wisdom of breaking down godliness with words and whether there is anyone who may address God as Job addressed God.
He corrects Job by saying that the wicked are not righteous, as Job claims.
He claims that God has no interest in Job's sorrows, that God cannot rebuke him for his godliness, and that Job's sin is the reason for his misery.
He says Job's first sin is his harshness toward his neighbor and that Job sinned further to suggest that God has no knowledge.
He encourages Job to seek a friendship with God again so that he can be blessed.
Eliphaz was loyal; he sympathized and empathized with Job. He advises Job to do some self-examination and see where he has gone wrong. He points out his mistakes to Job and sends Job back to God and God's friendship.
Bildad
Bildad is also presented as a friend with sympathy and compassion for Job in his sad time.
Bildad points out to Job that if his children have sinned, their death is justified.
Bildad also tells Job that Job must admit his mistakes and he will be fine again. So he encourages Job to do some self-examination.
He points out to Job that history has taught that the people who have left God will perish.
He reproaches Job because he says that Job thinks they are stupid.
He points out to Job that the sinner is not prosperous but that he has a path full of danger and mischief. He also says that in his death, the evildoer will be dishonored and forgotten.
He wants to be with Job; how can one be righteous before God?
Bildad's speaking turn is shorter than Elifas' speaking turn. We can also see that Bildad is talking to Job more down-to-earth. He sounds like someone who can be a proud person and quickly feel offended by a comment.
Zophar
Zophar sympathizes, has compassion, and empathizes with Job in his difficult circumstances.
In Job 11, we can see that he sends Job back to God again and again to seek answers.
Zophar also says that no sin is hidden from God.
Zophar is in a hurry to answer Job.
Zophar corrects Job, saying that the happiness of the wicked is short-lived and that the stolen goods provide them no benefit.
Zophar's speaking turn is considerably shorter than Eliphaz and Bildad's proverbial turn. He also appears to be more down on the man, and he is also in a hurry to reply.
Elihu
Elíhu is a big surprise; he is younger than the other friends, and he is not even mentioned in the beginning.
He chooses his words deliberately and carefully.
He corrects Job by saying that God is not Job's enemy and that Job can learn from the sad circumstances.
He also replies that God does answer man in his dreams and infirmities.
He says that God is just and that wickedness affects only men.
He says that the people pray with pride and that the trials should be a warning to the people, and that Job should take advantage of the trials.
Yet, are we like Job, going through our grieving process but still holding on to our faith? When the world gets hard for us, do we still look for God, or do we stray from the path?
When our friends go through a grieving process, like one of Job's friends, we are:
Eliphaz, who has loyalty, sympathy, and empathy. Who recommends our friends in distress and grief to do some self-examination and point out their mistakes?
Bildad, who is proud, quickly feels offended by our friends in distress and sorrow's words and asceticism, straight and down to the man.
Zophar, who has few words, is straightforward and hasty to answer.
Elíhu, who remains respectful, sincere, and honest. Who sees in every trial a warning and a lesson?
Do we have friends like these four in our lives? Do our friends have a positive influence on our lives?
If we are the friends, do we, like Job's friends, have a positive influence on their lives? Can we stand strong when the storms of life rage around us? Do we always hold on to our faith, and do we seek God in everything that happens in our lives? Do we only see the negatives in the storm, or do we see the warnings and lessons in the trials?
Prayer:
Thank you, Father, for allowing us to learn these lessons from the story of Job. Thank God that we can come and sit with You at the end of the week and take in Your Word. Thank God for the rain we have received and will continue to receive. Father, help us to please give our best this week, to know and magnify You in everything. Jesus, please forgive us when we make mistakes, and please keep us from evil. Holy Spirit, when the words are missing, please intercede for us and lead us on the right path, please. Father, please make us servants to Your will and help us to please dispose of Your will. In Jesus Name, Amen
Please feel free to leave a review of this message.

SportPesa mega Jackpot hits a historic KES 384 million! Your chance to win big this October
October 2024 kicks off with the biggest football jackpot ever seen in Kenya, as SportPesa’s Mega Jackpot hits a jaw-dropping KES 384,948,628. This 40th weekend of the year could be your golden opportunity to transform your life, with just a KES 99 stake standing between you and the largest payout in Kenyan gaming history. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to football betting, this is your chance to make headlines and become the next big winner.
A mega jackpot like never before
The SportPesa Mega Jackpot has consistently set the bar high for football betting in Kenya, and this time it has reached unprecedented heights. The KES 384 million prize pool is a historic high, and all it takes is correctly predicting the outcomes of 17 exciting football matches. These 17 games span some of the biggest leagues in the world, giving fans a thrilling weekend of action as they aim for the ultimate prize.
It’s not just the main jackpot that’s enticing; SportPesa offers significant bonuses even if you don’t get all 17 predictions right. Players who make 12 or more correct predictions are eligible for fantastic bonuses, with the rewards increasing the closer you get to predicting all 17 games correctly. With this bonus system, you still stand a chance to win substantial amounts of money even if you fall short of a perfect score.
How to play and win big?
With only KES 99 needed to place a bet, the Mega Jackpot is accessible to everyone. And that’s not all—by participating in the Mega Jackpot, you are automatically entered into the 15, 14, and 13-game jackpots, giving you multiple chances to walk away with massive rewards. This innovative setup ensures you have the maximum potential to win big with just one bet.
Getting involved is easy: simply visit the SportPesa platform, select your predictions for the 17 matches featured in this week’s Mega Jackpot, and place your bet. The action begins on Saturday at 1930 EAT, with the final game scheduled for Sunday evening, ensuring a full weekend of football excitement.
Best path to becoming a millionaire in Kenya
SportPesa has a rich history of turning ordinary Kenyans into multi-millionaires. In 2018, Gordon Ogada made history by winning a staggering KES 230,742,881 in the SportPesa Mega Jackpot, the largest jackpot ever won in Kenyan history at the time. He was followed shortly after by Cosmas Korir, who pocketed an equally life-changing KES 208,733,619.
These monumental wins are not rare. SportPesa has minted numerous millionaires throughout the year with its Mega Jackpot and generous bonuses. Many Kenyans have reaped significant financial rewards just by playing the Mega Jackpot, and now it’s your turn. Could you be the next name added to SportPesa’s list of legendary winners?
Weekend’s mega jackpot fixtures to watch
This weekend’s jackpot promises thrilling football action from across Europe’s top leagues, providing an exciting backdrop as you aim to win millions.
Everton vs Newcastle (English Premier League) The Mega Jackpot gets underway on Saturday with a key fixture between Everton and Newcastle United at Goodison Park. Everton is looking to continue their resurgence after a poor start to the 2024/25 season. The Toffees are unbeaten in their last two matches and have a solid home record, winning six of their last eight league games at Goodison. On the other hand, Newcastle has made an impressive start to the season and will be keen to maintain their top-four push. Both teams are desperate for points, making this an unpredictable and crucial matchup to kick off the Mega Jackpot.
Brighton vs Tottenham (Premier League) Later in the weekend, Brighton will take on Tottenham in what promises to be another close encounter. Only one point separates these two sides on the Premier League table. While Brighton has struggled to secure wins in recent weeks, Tottenham comes into the game riding high on confidence after an impressive run of five straight victories in all competitions. Spurs are also aiming for their third consecutive Premier League win, which would be their first such streak this calendar year.
Real Sociedad vs Atletico Madrid (La Liga) The final game in this weekend’s Mega Jackpot takes place in Spain’s La Liga, where Real Sociedad will host Atletico Madrid at the Reale Arena in San Sebastian. Sociedad has been in poor form, winning just once in their last eight games and losing five of their previous six home matches. Atletico Madrid, despite a recent heavy defeat to Benfica in the Champions League, will be eager to bounce back and continue their dominant record over Sociedad, having not lost to them in their last nine meetings.
Why SportPesa’s Mega Jackpot is the best?
What sets the SportPesa Mega Jackpot apart from others is not just the massive prize pool but the level of engagement and reward it offers. Players can enjoy the thrill of some of the best football games globally while having a real chance of winning life-changing sums of money. And with multiple jackpots (17, 15, 14, and 13-game jackpots) rolled into one weekend, the excitement is endless.
The Mega Jackpot also offers an unrivaled sense of community. Many Kenyans eagerly anticipate each week’s fixture lineup, discussing predictions and sharing the excitement that comes with each game. With so many participants, the anticipation builds until the final whistle of the last match. Even if you don’t win the full amount, the bonus structure ensures that many players walk away with rewarding payouts every weekend.
Play now and make history
This October weekend could be the moment that changes your life forever. Don’t miss out on the chance to be a part of history with the largest Mega Jackpot in Kenyan gaming. For just KES 99, you could become the next multi-millionaire and take home a record-breaking KES 384,948,628. Visit SportPesa today to place your bet, and who knows? You could be the next legend in Kenyan football betting.
Place your bet now and get in on the action before it’s too late!
Apply for Tujiamini
Besides the mega jackpot, apply for Tujiamini which is a transformative initiative aimed at empowering Kenyan youth through sports and talent development. Launched by SportPesa, Tujiamini seeks to inspire confidence and self-belief in young athletes by providing them with opportunities to hone their skills and showcase their talents on national and global platforms. The initiative emphasizes nurturing talent from the grassroots level, offering training, mentorship, and support to help participants achieve their full potential.
Big Brother UK 21: Episode 1
Sunday 6 October 2024
Live launch!
I didn't liveblog this, but let me tell you my thoughts:
Setup seems identical to last year. 16 housemates, 6 weeks. Great! I loved last year's show, so I'm not looking for a drastic reinvention.
The red/blue split house twist is interesting. The concept itself isn't revolutionary - we've had rich/poor divides before - but it IS interesting to split the house from day 1. What will this mean for the friendships that form?
As for the housemates, I will rank all 16 from worst to best, and divide the list into categories:
Evil housemates, in a way that bores me
Ryan (anti-woke working class Northerner)
Nathan (posh Tory who likes Nigel Farage)
Dubious housemates, I'm worried I won't like them
Marcello (rapper from East London)
Emma (53-year-old Mancunian)
Thomas (amputee football player)
Promising housemates, I reckon I could like them
Khaled (Lebanon-born refugee)
Sarah (posh farmer)
Segun (Christian)
Hanah (Muslim; works in HR)
Martha (has a girlfriend and a rabbit)
Dean (gay barber)
Daze (climate activist)
Amazing housemates, I love them to bits
Ali (late-in-life lesbian; forensic psychologist)
Lily (young; first time living away from parents)
Rosie (fanfiction writer)
Welsh housemates
Izaaz (estate agent)
Excited to see the weeks go by and find out which of my early faves are secretly dreadful!

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings of Sunday, September 29, 2024
Reading 1
NM 11:25-29
The LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Taking some of the spirit that was on Moses, the LORD bestowed it on the seventy elders; and as the spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied.
Now two men, one named Eldad and the other Medad, were not in the gathering but had been left in the camp. They too had been on the list, but had not gone out to the tent; yet the spirit came to rest on them also, and they prophesied in the camp. So, when a young man quickly told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp, " Joshua, son of Nun, who from his youth had been Moses’ aide, said, "Moses, my lord, stop them." But Moses answered him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! Would that the LORD might bestow his spirit on them all!"
Responsorial Psalm
PS 19:8, 10, 12-13, 14
R./ The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. R./ The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. R./ The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
Though your servant is careful of them, very diligent in keeping them, yet who can detect failings? Cleanse me from my unknown faults! R./ The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
From wanton sin especially, restrain your servant; let it not rule over me. Then shall I be blameless and innocent of serious sin. R./ The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.
Reading 2
JAS 5:1-6
Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days. Behold, the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud; and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter. You have condemned; you have murdered the righteous one; he offers you no resistance.
Gospel
MK 9:38-43, 45, 47-48
At that time, John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us." Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut if off. It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched."

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
"Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!”
The Scripture passages this Sunday speak to the importance of just and healthy laws. We also hear of this in the refrain to the Responsorial Psalm: “the precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.” The Psalmist continues to explore this in the verses of the psalm—Psalm 19—declaring that “the law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul”, and that “the ordinances of the Lord are true, all of them just.”
The purpose of law is to bring order to a community. It allows individuals to get along with other, rather than each man, woman, and child being a law unto himself or herself.
Every law, and every person who passes, executes, or judges laws, is answerable to the Creator of all things. God the Creator created the universe with an intrinsic order. Every wise scientist knows that the material universe has its own intrinsic order, and will teach those willing to listen that the law of gravity, the law of entropy, and the law of conservation of matter cannot be repealed by any congress. Every wise physician knows that the human body has its own intrinsic order, and will teach those willing to listen that one cannot pretend that an unhealthy diet, smoking, or exposure to high levels of radiation will make a human person healthier. So it is with civil law on matters pertaining to man’s intrinsic nature.
Man can pretend to have authority over moral norms, but he does so at his own risk. The question is whether Christians are willing to speak boldly on behalf of the intrinsic moral order by which God created man. Modern man might take a cue from today’s First Reading.
“Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!” The First Reading is somewhat mysterious. It’s mysterious not only because in this passage the “Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses”. It’s mysterious not only because the Lord took “some of the spirit that was on Moses” and “bestowed it on the seventy elders”. It’s mysterious in how it reveals the connection between the law and the prophet.
Each and every Christian, through her or his baptism, is called to be a prophet. It’s easy to imagine Jesus saying during His days on earth, and also today, what Moses proclaims in the First Reading: “Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!”
Each culture, sub-culture, and religion has its own prophets. Prophets may differ from one such body of persons to another. There may be cultures, sub-cultures and religions where to be a prophet is to be nothing other than a “free spirit”, one who lets the wind blow where it wills without regard for rules and regulations, doctrines and dogmas. But Christianity is not such a body.
The Christian prophet does not oppose the Law of the Lord. He is precisely the one who takes risks to stand up for it, is willing to be persecuted for his witness, and knows that his life is about the Lord instead of about himself.
The Christian prophet knows that while he himself is vastly imperfect, “the law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul”. The Christian prophet knows that while he himself is often untrustworthy and simple, “the decree of the Lord is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple.” The Christian prophet knows that while he himself is often false and unjust, “the ordinances of the Lord are true, all of them just.”
God asks you to serve Him as a prophet: to defend His saving Law, which is the Law that brings order, refreshment, wisdom, truth and justice to the spirit. This is the spirit of Jesus and His Father. This is God the Holy Spirit, the spirit who gives everlasting life.
We live in a world today that is so topsy-turvy that it becomes more and more clear each day just how much spirit it takes to defend God’s law. But the great English journalist G. K. Chesterton had a very optimistic view of this sort of challenge. He noted that the “act of defending any of the cardinal virtues has today all the exhilaration of a vice.” Would that each of us would give ourselves over to this exhilaration. “Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets!”

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Book of Deuteronomy 4: 1-2, 6-8
Moses urges the people to hear and observe God’s Law.
Psalm 15
The Psalmist has a message like Moses’ instructions.
Letter of James 1: 17-18, 21-22,27
James advises all of us to “be doers of the Word and not hearers only….”
Gospel of Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Jesus has a conflict with the Pharisees about purification laws.
Our Gospel this weekend shares an important message that can be applied to our experiences today. Many years ago, a former professor at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School wrote a book entitled “Prophet and Teacher.” His name is Wiliam Herzog and he addresses the central issue in our Gospel this weekend. The purity laws of Israel and what we can learn from Jesus.
Our Gospel opens with the words, “When the Pharisees with some scribes gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is unwashed hands…” This does not refer to the directions our parents gave us as dinner approached, but had everything to do with the purity laws of the Jewish faith. These laws could be very detailed. What foods to eat, how to prepare them, how to serve them and how to prepare ourselves for the meal. Herzog shares that Jerusalem, the center of the Jewish faith, focused on these purity rules which he labels as the “great tradition.” But faithful folks living north in Galilee and other outlying areas had to deal with lifesaving employment, their work and concerns that centered around life and survival. They therefore, neglected some of the purity laws. We can understand that reality. Perhaps, historically the purity laws began as a primitive people found that some foods and actions caused harm to people. Herzog writes about these purity laws by saying, “This social construction, (the purity laws) comes to the oppressed, buttressed by forms of religious legitimization, as unchanging reality that explains the deprivation of the poor and the abundance of the rich.” I believe Jesus understood this reality. Laws meant to honor God hurt the poor and disadvantaged.
This Gospel presents Jesus as a teacher who is trying to call his listeners back to the heart of their religious faith. “You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He is not asking his listeners to disregard their religious laws but as he advised he crowd, to be aware that, “Nothing that enters one from the outside can defile that person; but things that come out from within are what defile.” He then makes a list of actions that come “from their hearts” that defile; theft, greed, malice, adultery, envy etc.”
This Gospel shows us a Jesus who understands the lives of his community; their burdens, values, and needs. Can you imagine the relief his words brought the poor folks who heard his response to the Pharisee and Scribes? Folks who believed but were trying to survive. “You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”
Our world then and now has found ways to oppress the poor. Yet when we listen to our second reading today from St. James we hear, “Be doers of the word and not listeners only deluding ourselves.” The question for all of us this weekend is this. “How do you and I apply the Scriptures today to our ordinary daily lives”? Does Jesus’ understanding of what ordinary, poor folks face serve as a model for all of us?

The Afar Take
It’s hard to overstate how transporting it is to spend a week at C Lazy U, a guest ranch in the mountain town of Granby, Colorado. The ranch, which has been offering a taste of Colorado’s western culture since 1919, has access to more than 8,500 pristine acres with rolling hills, hundreds of trees, and a creek burbling peacefully through the landscape. On a recent June day, as I drove through the handsome wood-framed entry, the sights and sounds of city life felt very far away indeed.
“Our original slogan dating back 105 years was trout fishing, bear hunting, and all-you-can-eat apple pie,” said general manager Jeremy Belnap on my recent visit. “And we still do some element of all of those three things to this day.”
While bear hunting is off the table, throughout the weeklong program you can learn to fly fish (and throw an ax and shoot a BB gun), eat delicious food (including pie), and most importantly, learn how to ride or deepen your riding skills. The ranch’s 200-plus working herd of horses are the stars of the show here, all well cared for by Ami Cullen, the director of equestrian operations.
The week revolves around these horses, and when guests check in on Sunday, Ami—who has an uncanny knack for pairing the right horse with the right human—plays matchmaker. (My horse was a caramel-colored gelding named Duncan.) As the week unfolds, there are rides and clinics and private lessons targeted at different levels. And riders range from people who have never been on a horse before to expert riders seeking to improve their skills, so never fear if you’re a little nervous around horses. In fact, that’s one of the things that gets Ami out of bed in the morning.
“I really just love getting all different types and sizes and age levels of people on horses,” she said. “Some people don’t want to ride. They’ve never been on a horse before. And then they leave here and they’re like, ‘I can’t wait to ride. I want to go home and take lessons.’”

As confidence grows over the week, so do friendships. There’s time and space to connect with other guests, especially over morning cowboy coffee, where staff warm mugs over an open fire before filling them with rich, hot coffee, or over evening cocktails, as everyone unwinds from a day of riding and other fun. People connect so deeply with the ranch and with other families that Belnap said some families have been returning on the same weeks and staying in the same cabins for more than 50 years.
At the top of the can’t-miss list at the ranch is what’s known as a “jingle.” The ranch has access to about 8,500 acres, and every night, wranglers herd the horses out to graze. So at 4 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily, you can catch the mesmerizing spectacle of 200-plus horses thundering past you.
Who’s It For?
C Lazy U is especially good for—and geared toward—families, though a couple or solo traveler would never feel out of place. The programming for kids is spectacular and offers a lot of independence: For most of the day, kids are off in the capable hands of wranglers who teach them how to ride, introduce them to the property’s donkeys, and generally keep them entertained, giving adults the opportunity to have their own vacation.
Families eat breakfast and lunch together, but kids can eat separately to allow parents time to relax over a glass of wine before the evening activities bring everyone back together again. The kids I saw running around seemed to thrive in this safe, independent environment. Belnap said that, based on what he’s witnessed with both his own kids and other guests’ children, the programming is “confidence boosting and absolutely freeing for them too.”
I stayed at the ranch on my own for several days and felt completely comfortable—my fellow guests were more than happy to fold me into their conversations and groups, and I never felt lonely or out of place.
You don’t need to have any previous riding or ranching experience, although you’ll want to heed C Lazy U’s advice to bring comfortable jeans to ride in and a good hat to keep your face safe from the Colorado mountain sun. The ranch also encourages guests to dress up in western attire, but if you don’t have that kind of clothing (I didn’t!) you won’t feel out of place. I just did my best to approximate the suggested dress code.
The ranch also has a small, sweet guest shop that sells boots, western-style shirts, hats, and other similar items.

The Location
Granby, Colorado (elevation: 7,935) is a small mountain town that’s known as a base for outdoor adventures, given its proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park (a 20-minute drive away) and activities from fishing and rafting to hiking and horseback riding.
The ranch—which has been owned by just a handful of families since it was founded—has 8,500 acres, and while the ranch only occupies a small patch of that, it still feels sprawling. Cabins are tucked back into the trees; although there’s a spa and updated lodging now, the ranch has maintained its roots. Several of the buildings date back to the early days of the ranch, including the main lodge, which was built in 1947 from logs sourced from the surrounding land.
In 2021, the ranch lost its historic 99-year-old barn to a fire that also destroyed several workers’ cabins and damaged other property (no horses or people were harmed) but the ranch reopened later that year after repairs and some remodeling.
There is a small pond for fly-fishing (the ranch also offers guided river excursions), an ax-throwing station, a BB gun “range,” skeet-shooting, archery lessons, and a skills course for the kiddos. And while summer is the most popular time of year, the ranch remains open in the colder months for a unique winter getaway.
Hiking and horseback riding trails radiate out from the main ranch, and everywhere you look there’s another gorgeous view. And the goal is for those views to never change. Of the ranch’s 8,500 acres, 2,600 are in conservation easements, and the current owners have maintained a commitment to the land. “Our owners refer to themselves as stewards . . . because they’re here to protect and preserve,” Belnap said.
“At 4 P.M. and 6 A.M. Daily, You Can Catch The Mesmerizing Spectacle of 200-Plus Horses Thundering Past You.”

The Rooms
There are 38 guest accommodations, ranging from individual rooms to three-bedroom cabins. All are well appointed with cozy-yet-elegant ranch vibes: lots of wood walls, floors, and furniture, accented with buttery brown leather club chairs, bright western-style blankets, and stone fireplaces. The spacious cabins all feel more like homes than anything else—immediately comfortable and stocked with comfy robes, freshly baked cookies, toffee chocolates, and excellent coffee and tea. My welcome basket had a reusable water bottle, bug spray, an energy bar, and an oxygen can for altitude sickness.
The Food and Drink
Be prepared to eat: The ranch offers three robust, delicious meals each day and several snacks and desserts throughout the afternoon and evening. Breakfast and lunch are typically served buffet-style, but dinner can range from family style to buffet to multi-course plated (each night has a different option). The food, overseen by chef Ulises Salas, is fresh and accessible but elevated. On my visit, the lavish Sunday buffet dinner offered a chilled seafood display (including oysters!), salads with shaved vegetables and melon, roasted snapper, bison rib eye, and a mouth-watering table of breads. Sommelier Tony Collier oversees an impressive wine list packed with international bottles, while evenings often bring ice cream socials or s’mores and cocktails at the bar near the pool.
Staff and Service
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more inviting, caring group of people. While C Lazy U is a laid-back place, with most staff and wranglers dressed in jeans and cowboy hats, the service feels luxurious. Staffers show you to your room, bring luggage, and are otherwise available for any and all questions. Stays include daily housekeeping and nightly turn-down service.
Belnap has instituted a new texting option for reaching staff, which makes it easier to chat with the front desk, get extra towels, or ask questions about anything around the ranch.
Accessibility
Accessible features on property include two cabins with entrance ramps and roll-in showers with support bars. A wheelchair lift in the main lodge allows easier access to the dining room, and golf carts help visitors get around the property. There is a 250-pound weight limit for horseback riding, for the safety of both guest and horse.
At the Lazy U Spa, relief for saddle soreness and other aches and pains is only a massage (or a soak) away. Courtesy of C Lazy U Ranch
Wellness
The aptly named Lazy U Spa is a short walk from the main cabins, behind the tennis courts, and overlooks the ranch’s creek. In fact, several of the massage tents (imagine the most elegant glamping tent you’ve even seen) have glass windows in the floor so you can watch the creek running by as you get a massage. Facials, scrubs, and soaks in big copper tubs are also on offer.
There’s a pool on site, as well as a couple of hot tubs. In July 2024, the ranch opened the Lazy U Hideaway, an adults-only spa lounge with a custom hot tub, lounge area with a firepit, cold plunges, and a glass-walled sauna with panoramic views of the Continental Divide.
