SUMMER NIGHTS

percy jackson― summer nights. daughter of stars.

quiet summer nights, at camp with your best friends. sitting off the dock at the beach, watching the water ripple as percy chucked rocks in. annabeth pushing you off into the water and you resurfacing with a smile and laughter.

flowers in the rain, running around through the blooming strawberry fields with grover and nature nymphs. percy picking a flower and sliding it behind your ear while you smiled and laughed.

he wished on all the stars, that it'd stay the same. he'd come back every year to see you all happy with annabeth, grover, thalia, luke, all of them.

he kept them in his heart, the tiny fragile pieces of your love. when he first met you that summer night he was claimed, you told him you weren't afraid and that the stars would guide him. that summer night you told him how you felt about him, that you loved him. that summer night he told you how he felt about you, that he loved you too.

you once found it kind of strange, how everything could change and fade away. but now, percy looked up at the distant sky, remembering all those quiet summer nights the two of you shared.

starlight in your eyes. they were beautiful and bright.

he thought of how your worlds must have appeared so close.

that summer night, if he could try again. he'd save you from that star who came down from the heavens themselves and took you. took you soaring through the cosmos.

"hey." annabeth greeted, standing beside where percy sat. he was gazing up at the stars while she looked down at him, both of them filled with nothing but sadness.

"can we sit here for awhile? just for a little bit." she asked, lowering herself beside him, her legs hanging off the edge of the dock, hovering above the water.

"this is kind of nice. don't you think?"

Moonlit Whispers

The summer air was thick with warmth, the scent of salt and pine blending into something uniquely nostalgic. The campfire had long since burned low, leaving only embers glowing in the distance as the other campers retreated to their cabins. But you couldn’t sleep. Not when your heart beats like this. Not when the night whispered secrets through the swaying trees, urging you forward.

You padded barefoot down the narrow trail that led to the beach, the sand cool beneath your toes. The lake stretched out before you, dark and endless, the moon casting silver ripples across the surface. And there, standing near the water’s edge, was him.

Nathan.

He turned at the sound of your approach, his face catching the soft light. His dark hair was a little messy, like he’d been running his hands through it too much, and his eyes were warm, deep, and a little nervous locked onto yours.

“You came,” he murmured. There was something in his voice, something breathless.

“I couldn’t sleep,” you admitted, hugging your arms around yourself. The night air wasn’t cold, but your skin tingled all the same.

Nathan let out a soft chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah… me neither.”

For a moment, you just stood there, the sound of the water lapping at the shore filling the quiet between you. He shifted on his feet, glancing at you like he had something to say but didn’t quite know how.

Then, finally, he exhaled sharply and took a step closer.

“I—” He broke off, shaking his head with a frustrated laugh. “Okay, this is… hard.”

You tilted your head. “What is?”

He met your gaze then, something raw and desperate in his expression, like if he didn’t say this now, he might never get another chance.

“I like you,��� he blurted. His voice was uneven, his hands clenched at his sides. “A lot. More than I should, probably. More than makes sense, because we’ve only known each other for a few weeks, but… I do.” He swallowed hard. “I think about you all the time. When you laugh, when you talk, even when you don’t say anything at all. It drives me crazy.”

Your breath hitched. The night seemed to press in around you, the sound of the lake suddenly distant, like the world had shrunk down to just him.

“Nathan…”

“I know this is probably dumb,” he rushed on, misreading your silence. “And I don’t expect anything, I just—I needed to tell you. Because if I didn’t, I’d regret it.”

Your heart hammered against your ribs. He was looking at you like you were the only thing that mattered, like the moon and the stars and the entire sky could collapse and he wouldn’t care as long as you were still standing here.

Slowly, hesitantly, you reached for his hand. His fingers twitched, then curled around yours like he couldn’t believe you were real.

“I like you too,” you whispered.

His eyes widened slightly, breath hitching. “You do?”

You nodded, feeling warm all over, like the night itself had wrapped around you both in a secret embrace.

Nathan let out a soft, shaky laugh. And then, carefully like he was afraid of shattering the moment—he leaned in.

It wasn’t dramatic or rushed. It wasn’t like the movies. It was just him and you, standing beneath the endless sky, his lips brushing softly against yours in the gentlest of kisses. A whisper of warmth, fleeting but unforgettable.

When he pulled back, his eyes searched yours, breath uneven. “That was my first kiss,” he admitted, voice barely above a whisper.

You smiled, heart swelling. “Mine too.”

He grinned, looking a little awed, a little relieved, and a whole lot like he wanted to kiss you again.

The night stretched on around you, the lake shimmering, the stars above blinking in quiet approval. And for the first time all summer, you weren’t thinking about camp or the fleeting days ahead.

You were thinking about him. And the way this moment, this feeling, would stay with you long after the summer sun had set.

The songs for your next night time drive

One of my favorite things I did when I had nothing in particular going on was to go on night drives with my friends. A quick text on the group chat: “Who’s free rn to drive?” and the floods of texts would pop up

“Yes.”

“Downn.”

“Pick me up.”

I’d go get them and we’d go on various routes round our town; sometimes we’d drive over 30 minutes away from where we lived doing nothing but roll down the windows and listen to music as we made our way on the highways and the backroads. I highly recommend doing this as a form of therapy if you can. I also highly recommend listening to the songs I’ve put together for you to listen to or blast when you’re on your drive.

The Color Violet - Tory Lanez

This song meshes 80’s synth-pop and is meshed with modern-day R&B, which creates a very fresh, but nostalgic vibe. The song is upbeat, but almost complexed by an emotional aspect to the way the lyrics and music twist this tune. 

Location - Playboi Carti

I have to say that Playboi Carti’s entire debut album is such a great album to listen to on a nightdrive, but if I were to lock in on one single song, it would have to be this one. The melodious music with saxophone and calm drums creates an aesthetic rap feeling. The lyrics are not the main attraction of this song– or album in general– it’s more of the relaxed music in the background that creates a confident and nonchalant aesthetic to his songs. I would definitely listen to this song on full volume with my windows down and enjoy the music. 

Everyday - Ariana Grande

This song is kind of different from the other songs in the list because it doesn’t have the mystery and night time aspect that the other ones do. However, if you feel like screaming to Ariana and Future, this song is for you. Ariana Grande meshes R&B and pop into this song with amazing and loud vocals. Future comes in clutch with his great musical chemistry with Ariana’s lyrics. It’s something I listen to when I’m in a slump and kind of need to get a dance out. I highly recommend it. 

I Smoked Away my Brain - A$AP Rocky, Imogen Heap, Clams Casino

This song is one of the most ethereal songs I have heard in a long time. A$AP Rocky has been one of my favorite artists for a good amount of time, but a lot of his music I listen to in the background because I find it to be very calm and relaxed, but thins song, while being calm and relaxed, has a great sample from the song I’m God by Clams Casino which is a very mystical sound, kind of meshes with the nighttime. It’s very mysterious, but also sounds very free. A$AP Rocky originally released his song Demons, which covers the lyrical parts of this song, but some musical genius on the internet edited these two songs together, making it catch instant fame for a very good reason. This song sounds very magical and it's definitely something to elevate your night time drive experience. 

The Way Life Goes - Lil Uzi Vert, Oh Wonder

This song is one of my particular favorites by Lil Uzi Vert because of his melodic approach by featuring Oh Wonder’s song, Landslide. This made his music and lyrics sound more nostalgic, something I assume I’d listen to with the windows down when I’m reminiscing my past mistakes but knowing that time is the ultimate healer. I really appreciated Lil Uzi Vert’s versatility in taking up a kind of melodic approach to rap, which I feel like really makes listening to it feel more vibrant and different. This song makes me feel hopeful of the future and it hits even harder when I’m blasting this and singing it with my best friends.

I mainly chose these songs because they all fit the aesthetics of the night and the magical and mysterious feelings it cultivates, which I feel like the songs I chose replicate the feelings with their instrumentals and their lyrics. The next time you decide to go on a drive with yourself or your friend, add some of these songs to your cue!
