This has been a rollercoaster week for me emotionally. Today in therapy though I found a bit of good news. We were working with the part of me that is very critical and mean about my body. I realized it has shifted though since the last time we worked with it months ago. It still has a very hard outer shell that is crazy mean (today at first it said it didn’t want to talk to me because I’m a “fuck up”) but I noticed it showed me a bit of the softness underneath that today. And I felt that it’s starting to be willing to entertain the idea that maybe being mean to me isn’t the best way to motivate me. I got the impression that all the self-love and body positivity accounts and books and videos I’ve been inundating myself with are finally starting to get through a little bit. There’s still a lot of resistance to the idea that just being nice to myself about my body is good for me (it thinks I’ll basically just give up if it’s not critical of me all the time) but the fact that I felt even the smallest shift is progress and I’ll take it. This part has been running the show, ruling most aspects of my life for about 20 years so I know there’s no way it’s going to let go that easily. I do however have faith that eventually it will feel safe enough to relax and that we can find it a new job being supportive of me in a way that isn’t harmful. This is the healing work, it’s not always fast or easy. •
