someone needs to hold a live reading of tress since it's supposed to be a story told orally by hoid and that's clear throughout. and it should be interactive where the audience participates by for example actually asking the questions he says you might be asking and then tells you not to interrupt. it'd be so much fun.

Emotional hardcore, or Emo, is a genre that was born from the hardcore movement. Like it's distant cousin, Punk, Emo is fast, brash and loud. Emo music can be generally described as "sad" or "depressing," with lyrics generally discussing the more upsetting aspects of life, such as loss, heartbreak, peer pressure, etc. in a confrontational way, hence the "emotional" label.
Teenpunk, also colloquially called Pop-Punk Emo, is an aesthetic that was prevalent from the mid to late 2000s, although there has been a recent revival with the "Draculaura aesthetic." This aesthetic is heavily influenced by Pop-Punk music and consumerist culture surrounding Corporate Alternative fashion, including vendors like Hot Topic, Claire's, or Justice. Teenpunk is characterized by its colour palette involving black, white, and pink, and motifs involving "edgy" stuff that was popular among Alternative Millennials and Gen Z teenagers of the time, like colourful hair extensions, skulls, stars, checkerboard patterns, fishnets, Monster High dolls, etc. Like the term Pop-Punk Emo implies, it shares many similarities with the Emo subculture, but it is closer to pop culture and Pop-Punk music. Avril Lavigne is considered one of the pioneers of this aesthetic.
Emocore is a type of post-hardcore, but more emotional and somewhat melodic. Also known as Revolution Summer or First Wave. Notable bands include Rites of Spring, Embrace (US), Moss Icon, Gray Matter, and Dag Nasty. This term was highly rejected by the band.
Often considered the more light-hearted, math-rock influenced variant of Emo, Midwest Emo tends to go for more of an Indie/Geek vibe than the darker, angsty Emo original recipe. 90s stuff is commonly known as Second Wave, and 10s or 20s - Fourth Wave or Midwestern Emo Revival.
Emo-Pop is a genre combining Emo and Pop-Punk. Emo-Pop features a music style with more concise songs and hook-filled choruses. Well known Emo-Pop bands are Fall Out Boy, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and Panic! At The Disco. This music genre is not the same as Emocore. However, one can still identify as Emo if they tend to listen to more Emo Pop, since Emo-Pop is a type of emo music. Also known as Third Wave.
Screamo (also referred to as Skramz) is an aggressive subgenre of Emocore that emerged in the early 1990s, emphasizing "willfully experimental dissonance and dynamics". Screamo is strongly influenced by hardcore punk and is characterized by the use of screamed vocals. Lyrical themes usually include emotional pain, death, romance, and human rights.

Daily (Spooky) Fic Highlight: Summer Dreams
"Summer Dreams" is a Pitch/Sandy short fic that I wrote for @queerpyracy's birthday in 2014. It's an AU where Pitch and Sandy are these ambiguous, somewhat eerie entities associated with the turning of the year and the growth and harvesting of dreams and fear. 1116 words, M, M/M.
I was so excited to show this one off in the spooky collection; it's one of my favorite one-off fics.
Sample:
The One-All-Light drove his heavily laden wain slowly to the meeting place, pausing every so often at shacks or cabins far from other human dwellings to complete his harvest. By the time he reached the crossroads under a live oak dripping heavy with moss, the full moon was already high in the sky, and the One-All-Dark was already standing at the edge of the tree’s shadow. He stood still and silent, the dust of the road not daring to cling to the hem of the long black coat, his hands hidden in his long black sleeves, his face hidden under the wide brim of his flat black hat. At this sight of him, the things like horses pulling the wagon of the One-All-Light jerked forward, jostling the cargo. The One-All-Dark put up his hand to calm them, but it was too late. One of the items in the wain fell to the dusty road, bursting with a smell of river pools shaded by broad green leaves. The One-All Light and the One-All-Dark sighed. That one had been fine indeed. Still, there were many others.

Kitimat-Stikine, BC
The Skeena River is the second-longest river entirely within British Columbia, Canada (after the Fraser River). Since ancient times, the Skeena has been an important transportation artery, particularly for the Tsimshian and the Gitxsan—whose names mean "inside the Skeena River" ,and "people of the Skeena River," respectively. The river and its basin sustain a wide variety of fish, wildlife, and vegetation, and communities native to the area depend on the health of the river. The Tsimshian migrated to the Lower Skeena River, and the Gitxsan occupy territory of the Upper Skeena.
During the Omineca Gold Rush, steamboat services ran from the sea to Hazelton, which was the jumping-off point for the trails to the goldfields. The Hudson's Bay Company established a major trading post on the Skeena at what became called Port Simpson, British Columbia (Lax Kw'alaams), where nine tribes of the Tsimshian nation settled about 1834. Other tribes live elsewhere in BC, and descendants of one group in Metlakatla, Alaska.

I Heard It from the Grapevine and Was Like "Fuck"
I think my main problem with Sadeas' character progression (being based off grapevine spoilers) is that. He was at juuuust the right level of shitty I wanted him at... when he first showed up. But then Name Brand Sand™ kept going "OK, now I'm gonna make him worse... and worse... aaaand worse... and..."
Until I'm just like
Tumblr media
No, literally. He's dead, my suffering should be over, but Sando just keeps going "...and now he's a rapist! I got flashbacks up my sleeves!" Goddammit, FrankSanderson!
Normally, when a writer decides to keep upping the wild shit that the villain does, I'm there with my metaphorical tub of popcorn, nodding along like I'm listening to a smokin' hot jam. Like, yass queen, have that total mental/emotional breakdown because your Emotional/Ethical Support Teenager was planning on betraying you, undo all your attempts at bettering yourself or making amends for your crimes, BURN IT ALL DOWN, TAKE YOUR ARMY, AND DIE A METAL AF DEATH FACING DOWN YOUR ENEMIES WITH YOUR BACKS TO THE SEA! OK that's a lie, that sequence of events had/has me wailing and gnashing my teeth and rending my clothing because WE COULD'VE HAD IT AAAAALLL, but simultaneously, what an absolute metal album cover way to plan to go out. I probably should've used the "Roll up on the capital city by yourself, say 'I got an army that'll destroy you, so you should just give me the city now while you're still alive, HAVE IT FUCKING WORK, and then give a big show-stopper of a speech in front of the whole town while wearing an all-white ensemble, including the boots" part for my example. What was I talking about that wasn't Chaos Walking?
OH RIGHT.
But the crux of my beef is that, in a rare showing on my part, I didn't want Sadeas to go full villain. I wanted him to be Our Trash Ally, who just accidentally stays on The Side of Good, not because he's a good person, or wants to do the right thing, or even cares about doing the right thing, but rather a combination of it being beneficial to him in some way and/or it involves protecting his dead husband's son (at least, it does from his perspective, if not objectively).
It's a character type that I really like, but don't get to see very often outside of Lovable Rogues (who usually end up having a heart of gold or w/e anyway) or Ice Queen Raibarus (free band name) who make the choice to join Our Heroes and eventually end up becoming a good guy who's just kinda moody.
And like, nah, nah, it should be obvious, but I gottta make sure you don't get it twisted: in this Ideal Scenario of mine, I'm not looking for a Sadeas Redemption Arc, I don't want him to be a Bastard with a Heart of Gold. But at the very least I want him to have a Heart of a Mid-Grade Aluminum. Like, if it seems like he's becoming a better person--or at least a less worse person, it's probably 90-95% having to keep Dalinar from being Not-Mad-Just-Disappointed and quoting The Way of Kings passages at him. Along with understanding the fact that it'll be really hard to keep up the lifestyle to which he's become accustomed if the entire world is destroyed or becomes shrouded in evil or whatever the end goal of Odium or Whoever is gonna be.
So what I'm saying is, welcome to my least weird Stormlight AU that I'll be running inside my head alongside the canon as I read it. I will be calling it the "He's a Cunt, But He's Our Cunt" AU.

📚 January Reading Round-Up 📚
I got off to a pretty good start this year in terms of reading. I made a lot of progress in the Rivers of London series (which continues to be compelling and great), started a few novels that will take a while to get through, and revisited a series from my childhood.
- Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson (unique worldbuilding, kind, subverts tropes in great ways, loved the narrator and the characters and the relationships, some lovely themes and a great epilogue)
- Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch (Interesting, great character development, some cool worldbuilding elements)
- The Hanging Tree by Ben Aaronovitch (trans rep, great characters and relationships, perfect tension with the villain, loved Peter trying to bring the Folly into the modern world)
- Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch (bittersweet ending, loved seeing even more of Peter’s character and philosophy, great interactions with every character, an intense and very tense plot and denouement)
- Tales from the Folly by Ben Aaronovitch (fun, liked the Peter Grant stories better, felt the Moments were weirdly written)
- All Fall Down by Jean Little (a return to the Dear Canada series of my childhood, didn’t like this story as much as the others written by her and in the series more broadly, pacing felt a bit off and the tension/character work was perhaps a bit too simplistic, but heartfelt and kind nonetheless)
