Hwy 128 Colorado River Scenic Byway, UT (No. 10)
This spectacular route along the Colorado River gorge begins at the Colorado River Bridge on the north end of Moab. Spending a day exploring this section of the river gorge will provide you with jaw dropping scenery and take you to the sixth-longest natural rock span in the United States, world famous movie locations, beautiful picnic and bouldering areas, a Film Heritage Museum, a large variety of hiking trails including one that goes to the breathtaking Fisher Towers, historical points of interest, guided horseback riding opportunities, outdoor dining, a brand new mercantile (opening in 2020) and a ghost town.
Utah State Route 128 (U-128) is a 44.6-mile-long (71.7 km) state highway north of Moab. The entire length of the highway has been designated the Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway, as part of the Utah Scenic Byways program. This road also forms part of the Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway, a National Scenic Byway. Residents of Moab frequently refer to SR-128 as “the river road”, after the Colorado River, which the highway follows.
The highway was originally constructed to connect rural cities in eastern Utah with Grand Junction, Colorado, the largest city in the region. Part of the highway was merged into the Utah state highway system in 1931; the rest was taken over by the state and assigned route number 128 in 1933. Today, the highway is used as a scenic drive for visitors to the area.
The highway crosses the Colorado River at the site of the Dewey Bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This bridge was the longest suspension bridge in Utah until April 2008 when it was destroyed by a fire.

Tell me in the notes how your life would be different and/or what you'd be hyperfixating on instead!
Imagine a timeline where Stranger Things never got renewed after the first season. Or worse, never got made at all.
Imagine never being introduced to all these characters and watching them grow.
#i'll start#it's actually really hard for me to imagine because it's taken up a pretty big space in my life#starting with the mundane my graphic t-shirt selection would be different#probably more band shirts#i would not be playing puzzle tales on my phone so probably more browsing online shops and wikipedia rabbit holes#maybe i would be more up to date on some comics i fell behind on#my summer playlist in 2022 would not have been mike's bassment beats#(although tbh i still would have been listening to the 80's new wave tracks)#i don't think i would've even bought a funko since i was initially opposed to them#me and my out of town friend would've had to find something else to do in dec 22#instead of go to the stranger things experience#on a srs note i think my mental health would've spiraled worse due to all the political fallout#and i wouldn't have believed that a globally popular long-running mainstream tv show could end up with an m/m pairing#i don't think i would've believed it could happen for many years#esp after trump was elected and the supreme court was stacked with conservatives#i could say maybe i'd have met more ppl or tried to date more but honestly i prob would've just found other shows and online stuff to do#the pandemic really made me more of a recluse#i was first convinced to watch the show back in 2016 with a guy i was dating#but my obsession with the show developed independent of that. i went home and binged the rest#it's also made me curious about my 'confirmed bachelor' uncle who played basketball on a midwest hs team in the early 80's#who apparently had a boy who was his 'other half' in childhood and young adulthood#until they had some mysterious 'falling out'#his name is steve btw kdjfkajfkakdmf

Reviewing New Year Sale Outfits in Twisted Wonderland
In Japan, New Year's Day (お正月, or "Oshogatsu") is the biggest holiday of the year, and it is also my favorite. That being said, the TWST artists never disappoint when it comes to the art for this event, so let's review all of the cards!
Spoiler warning for upcoming ENG and JP sever event cards, including some Groovy art!
Round 1: 2021-2022
Kalim Al-Asim (SSR)
Look at him, he's so festive and cheerful
This Kalim, as well as Deuce's SR, have a special place in my heart. I started playing TWST the summer it came out, but I wasn't a "serious" player until around New Year. Kalim and Deuce were my first "duo magic" pair, and I love their interactions in the story as well.
I love his headband ribbon and how it matches his obi. The sparkly hakama also suits him. I'm excited to see Jamil's version of this outfit as well, but we all know it'll be a very long time until Jamil volunteers to work retail during the peak season.
12/10 he's so cute
Deuce Spade (SR)
I was surprised that this was just an SR, and that you could get him by finishing the event story. His outfit is so detailed!
I chose his Groovy art so you could see that he's wearing sneakers with his outfit, which I found funny. Cater is wearing similar shoes in his own SR, so it must be part of the Heartslabyul New Year attire. It still feels very in-character for Deuce.
The silhouette of his outfit is interesting. His jacket is short like a suit jacket, but has the sleeves of a haori. There are lots of elements of his dorm uniform, like the pins and sash around his waist.
Not only does he look awesome, but he chose to work during the New Year's Sale to buy a present for his mother.
12/10 very cool and wholesome
Round 2: 2022-2023
Ruggie Bucchi (SSR)
HIS HAIR!!!
Aside from Vargas Camp and his birthday cards, Ruggie doesn't have a lot of SSRs, so I'm happy for him. I look forward to getting him in the English server soon.
I love how Ruggie seems to have picked up a lot of merchandise from around the store. Aside from a fan, which all the boys are using as their "weapons" for battles, he has a little koi bag, which I love so much (I have a similar one). The little toy he's holding is called a den-den daiko (でんでん太鼓), which is popular for young children.
11/10 congrats on getting the job, Ruggie!
Cater Diamond (SR)
I chose to show his un-Groovy art, because it's easier to see his outfit.
His clothes are similar to Deuce's, except that his "vest" is red, and he is wearing a button-down shirt underneath. The mix of Japanese and Western influences reminds me of Taisho-era clothing. He looks like Kazushi Tatsuishi in the anime version of My Happy Marriage, which also happens to be set in the Taisho Era.
It's hard to see in this picture, but he has a hairpin in his hair!
10/10 he slays
Sebek Zigvolt (SSR)
He looks so dramatic with his gloves and fur collar, but are we surprised? He's a Diasomnia student, after all. I wish they had given him a different hat, though, because it looks almost identical to his dorm uniform.
This one makes me laugh, because he poses like my dad. Not seen in this image is Sebby's neon-green geta, which I think my dad would love (he likes having shoes in unusual colors).
10/10 who needs fireworks on New Year's Eve when you have Sebby?
Vil Schoenheit (SR)
He stole the show.
At first glance, his outfit may bear too heavy a resemblance to the regular Pomefiore uniforms, since they're already inspired by kimono.
With his fascinator hat, netted gloves, and black nail polish, though, Vil adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to his outfit. He looks like he is playing the role of a Taisho-era socialite who poisoned their lover and is now actively avoiding the police.
Either that, or he got divorced from Rook. After all, it looks like he is wearing a furisode (a type of kimono meant for single women) rather than a tomesode (worn by married women), like in his dorm uniform.
11/10. The storytelling potential is limitless.
Round 3: 2023-2024
Trey Clover (SSR)
I love his scarf and hat. His coat looks longer than Deuce's and Cater's, and more like a haori. Overall, it looks like a cozy combination.
Like Cater, he is also wearing a button-down shirt under his kimono, and his vest is green. Heartslabyul is the only dorm that gets a character in this event every year, so it's nice to see that the outfits are personalized for each character.
He looks like he could be someone's uncle, but you know for sure that he'd spoil his nieces and nephews.
10/10 very classy, if he was working at the store and I came to visit, I'd trust him.
Ortho Shroud (SR)
ADORABLE.
Something I've always found interesting about Ignihyde clothing is their use of sharp shapes and geometric patterns, especially in Ortho's case. I wonder how Idia's version of this outfit would look.
Ortho and Idia must've had so much fun creating this outfit together!
Infinity/10 if Ortho were trying to sell me anything, I'd buy it, regardless of whether I actually need it.
Rook Hunt (SSR)
He's wearing RED EYELINER!
His outfit is quite different from Vil's. While Vil is wearing a furisode, which is traditionally worn by women, Rook's outfit seems to have a more traditionally masculine silhouette (of course, this is just my interpretation). This probably means that Epel will get to wear an outfit similar to Rook's next time as well.
The peacock feathers on his red hat is also a nice touch.
His pose and expression remind me of Wen Kexing from the C-drama Word of Honor. They also have similar personalities.
10/10, he looks like he just stepped out of a period drama. I look forward to seeing the fanarts of him with Vil.
Jade Leech (SR)
Jade's card has to be my favorite from this year's lineup. I just love how they translated Octavinelle's suits into kimono, while keeping details such as the purple bow tie.
I'm obsessed with his haori--it looks fluffy. I'd like to buy five.
His pose is so...
Like Trey, he looks like someone's uncle (it must be the fedora). However, unlike Trey, he looks like someone's uncle who may or may not be part of the Yakuza. Instead of giving you money on New Year, you owe HIM.
He also looks like he goes door to door selling products, and is about to sell me what he guarantees is a genuine Toshiba toaster oven and absolutely not an overpriced knockoff that will short-circuit and cause my entire neighborhood to lose electricity.
11/10 I will buy that toaster oven anyway.
Which cards are you most excited for? Let me know!
#I'm an f2p player so I've been saving for them ever since GloMas ended#disney twisted wonderland#twisted wonderland#twst#kalim al asim#deuce spade#ruggie bucchi#cater diamond#vil schoenheit#sebek zigvolt#rook hunt#jade leech#trey clover#ortho shroud

For the SR ask game: 1, 7, 48!
- goshdangronpa
1. What was your first exposure to Danganronpa?
the Game Grumps, but NOT their first Danganronpa playthrough (~2020). at the time it was High Quarantine and i knew little about DR other than that it seemed Hunger Gamesy, and honestly i didn't know if i could handle that mentally. so i skipped it. eventually when they did DR2 (~2021-2022) i started watching that one, and when they were halfway done with that, i went back and binged the first DR to get context.
it was probably another year, however, before i really got into the fandom, as i found out my Manager really loves it too!
(really hoping they play v3 this year, by the way. they seemed very open to it last summer. i don't think they'll ever play UDG and i wouldn't want them to)
7. You get the chance to reassign five characters new talents. Who do you choose, and which new talents do they get?
i take this question to mean Talent Switching, and if it doesn't i don't care, so here's a few Talent Switch AUs for you:
Sayaka is now the SHSL ASSASSIN who took up the job to pay bills after her idol career began to tank. her cover is still the SHSL IDOL. she freaks out at the start of DR1 because she bungled her last assassination and she thinks the Killing Game is a punishment by some faceless contractor. the first trial is much the same, with Makoto finding out he didn't know much about this childhood friend of his at all, except we also discover her idol career had started to bounce back right before the killing game, and she would have gotten out of her job as an assassin. then, of course, we find out that she would have exited Hope's Peak to nothing at all. same plot, different emotional strings
Junko is now the SHSL CHILD CAREGIVER except she uses horrific Cocomelon-esque to keep kids hypnotically in line. she knows nothing about kids otherwise. there's no WOH because they're too busy watching ADHD Enoshima YTPs
Peko is now the SHSL ANIMAL BREEDER in an alternate universe where she gets to pet all the floofers she wants. she is sweet and quiet and if you threaten her majestic floofers she will disembowel you with a sword
Toko is now the SHSL ANTHROPOLOGIST. her understanding of culture helps her write novels that truly Encapsulate what it means to be a human, but doesn't help her at all in her personal life. (these things never do.) she is still bitter and angry and traumatized and Syo wants to disembowel cute boys to See How They Work. isn't humanity beeeeeeeyutiful? KYAHAHAHAHA.
K1-B0 as the SHSL ARTIST. still a robot, but now trying to figure out if what he does counts as AI Art and if he can ever understand others through it. Hope's Peak comes under fire for allowing him to attend, but nay-sayers come under fire from Miu, who shoots ping-pong balls at their faces.
48. Do you have any rare pairs?
answered right before ya here! i'm really down for tons of Rare Pairs, as they all take second place to the ones i froth at the mouth about (namely Irumatsu and Sakuraoi)
i did forget to mention one that my Manager randomly came up with and that i know is sinful but that i think is a fun idea: Mondo x Sonia
#danganronpa#game grumps#mondo owada#sonia nevermind#sayaka maizono#keebo#k1 b0#peko pekoyama#toko fukawa#genocide syo#junko enoshima

Hwy 128 Colorado River Scenic Byway, UT (No. 14)
The first route through this portion of Utah was the Old Spanish Trail, a trade route between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Los Angeles, California. The trail was in common use before the Mexican–American War in 1848. Although the trail serves a different route than I-70, they were both intended to connect southern California with points further east. I-70 generally parallels the route of the Old Spanish Trail west of Crescent Junction.
The Utah State Road Commission took over US 40 from Kimball Junction to Colorado in 1910 and 1911, and assigned the SR-6 designation to this route by the mid-1920s.[26] In late 1926, the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) assigned the designation of US 40 to this cross-state route, consisting of most of SR-4 and all of SR-6. (The SR-6 designation remained until the 1977 renumbering; SR-4 became SR-2 in 1962 and was eliminated in favor of I-80 in 1977.)
The road connecting Colton on SR-8 (US 50, now US 6) with SR-6 (US 40) in Duchesne became a state highway in 1910. The southwest end was moved from Colton to Castle Gate in 1912, and in 1927 it was numbered State Route 33. Few changes were made to the roadway, and in 1981 it became part of US 191.
Access between Moab and Castle Valley was originally via a pack trail called the Heavenly Stairway. This trail, named for a dramatic descent of over 1,000 feet (300 m), was described as beautiful, but difficult to navigate. Isolated from Utah's population centers, this area depended on Grand Junction and other cities in Colorado for both everyday supplies and a market for agricultural products. Moab residents pushed for a road to be built along the riverbank. By 1902, the trail was replaced with a toll road, called King's Toll Road, after Samuel King. King was an early settler who also operated the toll ferry used prior to the construction of the Dewey Bridge. Rocks inscribed with "Kings Toll Road" can still be found along the roadway. While the road did improve travel, it was not built high enough above the river level and was often flooded.

a personal reflection on decolonization
riel s. | 2022
Tansii kiiya (hello, how are you?) my name is riel starr and I am a Red River Michif artist and academic. my history on his land begins thousands of years ago among the peoples of the great plains, and my written history begins in the late 1600s with my first French ancestors and their unnamed first nations wives. my first First Nations ancestor is an unnamed woman referred to in my grandmother’s family tree as “Cree Woman”. I am Red River Métis on my mother’s side. Our historic Métis family names are Berthelet, Caron, St. Germaine, Dazé, Larivière and Dubois, and we come from the communities of Point à Grouette (now called St. Agathe), St. Norbert, and St. Vital (now modern-day Winnipeg) as well as the historic Batoche, Saskatchewan. My Berthelet ancestors were notable community leaders in Pointe à Grouette and my Caron ancestors including my fifth great uncle jean caron sr. fought in the North West resistance of 1885 at the battle of Duck Lake when he was fifty-two years old. Jean Caron Sr’s house is now a historic site in Batoche. As for myself my mother is a Métis educator and academic and my father is a settler archaeologist-turned-locksmith. I introduce myself in this way, the traditional way of Métis writers to contextualize my family, my knowledge and experiences, as well as my place on this land.
Natually, my native mother and my settler archaeologist father never married and split before I was old enough to form any memories. Museums and history have always been a fascination to me; the Royal Terrell Museum in Drumheller, which I dubbed “the dead dinosaur museum” and the Royal Alberta Museum which I called “the dead mouse museum” after my favourite display. The display was a larger-than-life diorama of a mouse, it’s intestines showing, the organisms that helped decompose the corpse were also displayed, massive daddy long legs, gigantic ants, worms thicker than my arm. The RAM is an interesting place. A few years ago, it was moved into a new building downtown and I could no longer spend hours finding fossils in the limestone exterior of the original museum. The place had changed drastically. As I reminisce on what I loved about the RAM I realize that all the things I disliked were their representations of Indigenous people; the uncanny wax figures with placid skin that did not resemble a single Native person’s skin that I had met. and the artwork they portrayed as artifacts. What makes a beaded bag so different from a Van Dyck if they’re the same age? And honoured the same amount by the people who made them?
Another place of importance growing up was Fort Edmonton Park. Like Heritage Park, Fort Edmonton has costumed interpreters, who teach visitors history as if the interpreters were of that time. In the summer of 2017, my lifelong dream came true, and I became a volunteer costumed interpreter with my mentor Sheldon Stockdale, another Métis person, and we were able to teach our history in the way we felt was right, something deeply important to the Métis people. An experience we had that stands out vividly is working on Fort Edmonton’s 1920 Street, and educating visitors on the history of pemmican, a sort of ancient protein bar made from berries, dried meat, and animal fat. Pemmican was a staple of survival for the Métis, and we were asking visitors to help us in redesigning the packaging for the bar. The historic package had a representation of an Indigenous person on it, a caricature of a race. We asked visitors if turning Indigenous people into mascots should be accepted, and sadly many people didn’t see the problem. Sheldon and I borderline argued with a man who seemed to see no problem in reducing us, the people speaking to him, to caricatures. In a similar vein, someone once gave me Chicago Blackhawk’s stickers when i was six, and not knowing a thing about hockey I asked my mother who the stickers were of. I’m guessing my mother did not want to explain the history of colonization and caricatures of Indigenous people, so she dismissed my question by telling me that the man in the tacky illustration was my ancestor.
Decolonizing art history seems like an impossible task, and perhaps it is. You cannot separate someone like Emily Carr from art history in Canada, however you can change the way you teach her work. Perhaps decolonizing art history means recognizing the ways in which “art history” as a field of study is deeply Euro-centric, and how the way of teaching this history is the same. I took my first semester at AUArts in the fall of 2020 after transferring from MacEwan after completing a two-year diploma at MacEwan University. I had a sculpture class a media arts class an art history class. The more I consider how to decolonize our history the more I understand that it is not the history that can be decolonized, it is the way we are teaching said history. It is the way that so much of our education is taught to us through a colonial lens, rather than a multifaceted history with a multitude of perspectives and peoples contributing until an entire picture is formed.
In the fall of 2020 in my media arts class my professor Kurtis Lesick was discussing an artist, a black artist who had him and others participate in a performance in which in that space the black artist allowed the participants to say the N-word. Rather than describing the piece in the way I just did removing the slur, Kurtis Lesick made the conscious decision to say the N- word twice. A person I had once thought to be an ally of mine, who knew the language of decolonization. Earlier this year a classmate in this class who was also in my sculpture class in the winter of 2022 told me that ‘knowing me has made her a better person’, this woman does not know me, and I do not know her, but I knew her in that moment. I knew that she wanted me to absolve her of her settler guilt. White settlers love referencing Tuck and Yang’s Decolonization Is Not a Metaphor but sometimes I wonder if they truly understand that it is simply not enough to know the language of decolonization, that you must be actively anti-colonial in a field that is built on colonization.
I spent a lot of time at Fort Calgary this semester for my FINA class, critiquing their exhibitions wondering how they can be improved if they can be improved, and I learned that given their budget that it is not possible. Fort Calgary, like other institutions cannot afford to replace their current exhibits and entirely redesign the way they teach history. What they can do is acknowledge the missing pieces, they can acknowledge the gaps they can acknowledge the fact that there’s more than one canon of history. Sometimes I wonder if the mosaic of history is too complex to decolonize; knowing that we will never return to a world like the one that existed pre-colonization. I think about my one classmate who tokenizes me, who knows how to use decolonial language to appear one way, but who never puts those concepts into practice. I think about the settlers who think that decolonization is re-colonizing the Americas but with “the Indians” in charge this time.
I now understand that decolonizing art history cannot happen without first decolonizing institutions. I have learned that we cannot forget that we once taught art history in an i way we cannot forget the way colonization has infiltrated every aspect of the education system down to the teaching styles of each professor. if we forget how colonial art history is in the first place, we will forget why we need to decolonize. Considering the hand that art history is hard in colonization around the world, I consider about the way southeast Asian women’s bodies are talked about in my textbooks versus European odalisque paintings. Brown people’s bodies were inherently sexualized and seen as dirty, while white people’s bodies were adored and deemed Classical.
Maybe colonization is another movement in the worldwide canon of art history. Another period in the bar graph of history- as google images seems to see art history. Perhaps Emily Carr and Paul Gauguin are the faces of this genre. Just as colonization cannot be forgotten among its victims, it cannot be forgotten by its perpetrators, who still believe they are a superior culture and race. Genres of literature such as post-colonial writing from India and Sri Lanka may suggest, there was a period of colonial art and literature, perhaps it is ongoing, possibly dying out, maybe here to stay. There will always be an antithesis, an attempt to view art and art history from a different perspective, and that is how we can decolonize art history.
#i posted this on my artist page but i only use it for professional reasons and i don't wanna share it here unless you're a mutual lolol#riel text#my writing#academia#institutional critique#art writing#decolonization#indigenous#métis#michif#indigenous art#first nations art#FNMI art#art#alberta#calgary#post colonialism#colonialism#canada#land back

10 Things for 2023
(Thanks for tagging me, @sapphicscholar!)
A fic idea you want to write or read: I think everyone I “know” on here is aware that I have an AU Hacks fic that I desperately want to write, involving Deborah becoming a surrogate for DJ. I’d love for someone else to write it as it needs to be done well in order for it to be believable but I know if I want it to become a reality, I need to write it myself. It’s a daunting task as I really struggle with creating stories of substance but it’s only a story for me so there’s no rush and if it’s meant to be written, it’ll happen.
A place you want to go: I love visiting the States but I’ve never made it beyond the North East so I’d really like to head to Georgia and the Carolinas to see how the culture differs.
A book you want to read: I have a few on my Goodreads list but I’d finally like to tackle Titan: The life of John D Rockefeller, Sr by Ron Chernow…all 774 pages. If only fanfiction counted towards Goodreads goals, I’d be ahead of the game by February 😂
Something fun you want to do: I’d like to make this the year of going out and experiencing things. After the last few years, it’d be fun to get back to concerts, musicals, festivals so I’m hoping to find something for each month and get out there and just have fun.
Something you want to make: totally boring but I have a cross stitch that I was given for Christmas a few years ago and I’d like to see what it looks like when it’s not just a bunch of threads in a packet.
A habit you want to start: I’d like take my dog on a long walk everyday. She gets multiple short walks everyday but we both need to get out more and stretch our legs on big walks.
Something new you want to try: I want to try wild swimming. It’s a big thing in Scotland and it looks so much fun. I’ll maybe wait for summer though…I hear it’s going to happen for two days in July this year 😂
Something you want to finish from 2022: I want to finish renovating my house. There’s not much left to do, just little bits and pieces that will finally make it come together but procrastination is big in this household!
Something you want to stop doing: I want to stop apologising for myself, for existing, for taking up people’s time. Deep down I know I don’t need to but with anxiety comes self doubt and second guessing and, for me, too much self-awareness and I just want to accept myself.
Something you want to keep doing: Much like @dkc2017 I want to keep writing fanfiction. I haven’t been a part of a fandom or written anything in more than a decade but reading and writing Hacks fics, and speaking with people on here and at AO3 about a shared interest has been really uplifting and I hope it continues in 2023
I don’t really have many mutuals but feel free to do this too if you haven’t already. 😁

JACKSON, Miss. — Seven years ago, Chokwe Antar Lumumba swept into the Jackson mayor’s office with plans to shake up local politics. At 34, he was the city’s youngest ever mayor, and he campaigned on a promise of self-determination for the predominantly Black city.
Now Lumumba, 41, stands accused in a sprawling corruption scandal that has also ensnared Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens and City Council members Aaron Banks and Angelique Lee. Lumumba, Owens and Banks have pleaded not guilty. Lee, who resigned in August, pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.
Some officials fear the indictments could overshadow the city’s efforts to improve residents’ quality of life — or undermine local leadership.
“I’m just praying that the legislators and state leadership can see beyond these indictments and realize that we still need help from the state in getting some very specific things done,” City Council President Virgi Lindsay said.
While Lindsay hopes the state will still provide funds for necessary improvements to infrastructure and blight, she acknowledged the request is coming at a fraught time.
Even before the indictments, the state’s Republican leadership had pushed for greater control of the city’s affairs. Political observers say this new crisis could intensify a long-running battle between the state’s mostly white Republican elected officials and the city’s largely Black Democratic leadership.
“Race is always a factor. It’s an ongoing factor in Mississippi politics,” said Leslie McLemore, a former Jackson State University political science professor who also once sat on the Jackson City Council. “You cannot in a very real sense separate Mississippi history in general from the tensions you find in the city of Jackson,” McLemore went on to add. “It’s an ongoing saga.”
Jackson is Mississippi’s largest city. But with roughly 144,000 residents, it is also small enough that constituents have a decent chance of running into local politicians around town.
“All of these folks were well-trusted, well-liked individuals,” said Bishop Ronnie Crudup Sr., the head pastor of New Horizon Church International in Jackson. “When you have servants from the mayor to City Council members to the local DA all being indicted, that’s a tremendous hit for the city.”
Jackson has already taken plenty of them. In 2022, a water crisis caused residents to go without clean water for days on end. That was on top of years of boil-water notices that eroded residents’ trust in the city’s water supply. Then, last year, Jacksonians went without municipal trash collection for roughly two weeks amid a contract dispute. And while some violent crimes have dropped, the homicide rate is still among the nation’s highest.
“It’s not even shock anymore,” Kim Meeks, who runs a locksmith shop in Jackson’s Fondren neighborhood with her husband, said about the indictment. “When’s the next shoe going to drop?”
Federal prosecutors have alleged the officials accepted, or in Owens’ case facilitated, bribe payments from out-of-state developers pitching a hotel project in downtown Jackson. Unbeknownst to them, the men were undercover FBI agents, according to a recently unsealed indictment. The mayor’s office declined to comment; calls to Owens’ attorneys, Banks and Lee were not returned.
“I know the state does not trust the administration of the city of Jackson,” said Democratic state Rep. Zakiya Summers, whose district includes parts of Jackson. Summers, who took office in 2020, said she is used to seeing “anti-Jackson” legislation come across her desk, referring to what she called the state’s push for oversight of city resources.
A spokesperson for Republican Governor Tate Reeves did not respond to questions about the relationship between the city and state. She referred to his Nov. 7 comments on the indictments, where he called the charges "serious."
"It is early in the process and because it is an ongoing criminal matter, I don’t believe I should make any other comment," Reeves told reporters.
The House Speaker and Lt. Governor's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In April, a push by conservative legislators to strip local control of the city’s water system failed for the second time in the House. More recently, a state-run police force has expanded its presence in Jackson. Last year, residents and civil groups also protested House Bill 1020, legislation sponsored by Republican lawmakers that would mandate the creation of a new court for Hinds County, of which Jackson is part, with a special judge and prosecutors appointed by state officials.
Supporters of the court say it will promote public safety, but Lumumba called the bill “an attack on Black leadership,” and the U.S. Justice Department and the NAACP weighed in on the city’s behalf.
“H.B. 1020 intentionally discriminates against minority voters in Hinds County by creating a system of judicial and prosecutorial appointments specifically designed to undermine the historical power of Black residents, through their elected officials, to self-govern,” they said in a complaint.
A federal judge dismissed the NAACP’s efforts to block the court in December; appointments for the court have not yet been announced.
Next year’s legislative session will overlap with primaries in the mayor’s race, which could be more competitive for Lumumba than either of his two previous races.
Some of his popularity stems from his revered father, Chokwe Lumumba, a civil rights activist, who was known on a national stage for calling for reparations, representing Black revolutionaries and successfully defending Tupac Shakur against assault charges.
The elder Lumumba became mayor of Jackson in 2013 but died suddenly at age 66 only eight months into his term. His son announced his plans to run later that year, vowing to continue fighting for the city.
“I propose that the people didn’t just vote for a man, they voted for a vision and for a movement,” he told The Clarion-Ledger newspaper at the time. “And no person is better suited to move that vision forward than myself, who co-authored it.”
Jacksonians will soon decide whether they still support that vision.
Before his indictment, Lumumba announced his intentions to run again. Outside his arraignment, his sister, Rukia Lumumba, said those plans had not changed. He could face a crowded Democratic primary.
Annie Cooper, 74, a retiree who lives in Northwest Jackson, said she voted for Lumumba in the past but has not decided whether she will again.
“I think that it’s important for people to do things in a professional manner,” she said, regarding the management of the city. “If it’s not run in a certain way, it just gives the state more reason to take over.”
Byron D'Andra Orey, a political science professor at Jackson State University, said the bribery scandal could shape the municipal elections. “He’s innocent until proven guilty,” he said. “But it doesn’t help his candidacy given the challenges Jackson faces. The negative attention it brings to his administration compounds what’s already there.”
The Rev. CJ Rhodes, who leads Mount Helm Baptist Church in Jackson, said he was “grieved” by the indictments but hopes the moment could prompt a change.
“There could be people in the city of Jackson who remind us of our greatness and see this crisis more as an opportunity than as a death sentence,” he said. “I think this is a great opportunity to convert the darkness rather than curse it.”

In my list of absolutely bizarre fixations, I have been playing a little game to amuse myself with in regards to who will outlive who out of Gorbachev, Kissinger and Jimmy Carter, all being men who have been active about around the same time in geopolitics. All of them have outlived all of the other people who were important around that time.
To be fair, Gorbachev was actually the youngest of the 3, but he was the first to go. He did live to 91 by the time he died in 2022. Kissinger was next in 2023 and lived to 100. Carter is still alive, though in hospice care and he turned 100 on October 1st.
Carter wins at being the one who has outlived the other two.
BUT Carter has not yet won being the one who has lived the longest. Kissinger lived for 100 years and 186 days. Carter, whose birthday is October 1st, is only 100 years and 40 days old. I did the calculations and Carter would have to live past April 6, 2025 in order to defeat Kissinger at being the one who has lived the longest.
I am kinda hoping Carter manages this somehow. I mean, he outlived both Reagan and Bush Sr. as well as all the other presidents before him. Biden is the oldest living president, soon to be former president, but he is also only four years older than the next three former presidents Clinton, Bush Jr, and the Turnip. These three were all born in the same summer so are the same age. The Turnip is a Gemini (two faced liar), Bush Jr is a Cancer and Clinton is a Leo. No, I have no idea how we managed to get three presidents all born within three months of each other.
Then there is Obama who is the youngest of them all.
I don't know why I'm rambling about this at 1 am in the morning, but I think I just wanted to write down the numbers of days that Carter would have to live in order to beat Kissinger at his length of life on this earth. And I just ended up info dumping about the whole thing.
