mayhaps i ask for a sweet little crested cormorant? :>
day 36
today's bird is the double-crested cormorant!
- the insides of their mouths are actually blue!
- cormorants have less preen oil than other birds, so their feathers get wet easier. they often dry them by standing out in the sun with their wings spread (like in my picture :0) )
- double-created cormorants use just about anything to build their nests, including rope, deflated balloons, fishnet, plastic, and parts of dead birds

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Most soaring birds rely on thermals-- updrafts of warm wind-- to keep them airborne. However, the great frigatebird doesn't need to use thermals to glide over the ocean! When entering areas without wind, these birds will intentionally fly into clouds, which contain thermals that can elevate them to an altitude of nearly 4 km (13,000 ft)!

Day 8 of Pied Month! Little pied cormorant? More like cormaront!
Reference photo by JJ Harrison
(in the low effort art style because I went to an art exhibition to fill up the creativity tank and had to paint when I got home instead of spending ages on a bird)
