Cormorant's Glide Through Golden Waters
Tumblr media
I spotted a neotropic cormorant (Nannopterum brasilianum) at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. While I occasionally travel there, it's been a while since my last visit.

Doing random stuff with my color changing brush. Most of the birds I drew are real, look up Brandt's Cormorant, California Quail, and Cedar Waxwing. And I'm improving with water droplets, yay! I'm terrible with digital art, I know, but at least I'm improving.

Note
I saw a group of birders today arguing over whether a bird was a juvenile double-crested cormorant (normal) or a juvenile neotropical cormorant (vagrant! highly unusual!) and I thought of you
I love that seeing the idle squabbles of bird folk reminds you of me- who could wish for a better impression!
This anecdote also reminds me of when I was newish to birding and incorrectly identified a black and white warbler as a cerulean warbler (highly embarrassing!!!) and was instantly bodied by like six warbler fanatics who corrected me quite sharply within minutes of posting. This is an important lesson that many birders learn the hard way…
That said calling a double crested cormorant as an aberrant neotropical is wild, nobody should want to be that guy 🤣

On The Move
Tumblr media
This neotropic cormorant (Nannopterum brasilianum) was moving fast, in fact, I thought it was about to take flight. But as it turns out in just moved to another spot several meters away.
"A nearly all-black waterbird with a snaky neck, the Neotropic Cormorant occurs in sheltered waters of southern U.S. states, the Caribbean, and Latin America. It is smaller and longer-tailed than other cormorants, but otherwise looks very similar to the Double-crested Cormorant, and the two species often flock together. Unlike its larger cousin, it sometimes plunge-dives for fish from a few feet above the water, almost like a booby, though it dives mostly as it paddles along the water’s surface, catching fish as it darts through the water." - allaboutbirds.org

TW FOR MENTION OF ANIMAL DEATH
i saw a dead cormorant on my walk home today. either crested or neotropic. (mind you, this is in a suburban texas neighborhood. very odd find.)
the poor baby was laying on its belly with its beak in the mud. i came back with gloves, and i stroked it, told it i was sorry, saw its little webbed feet, and looked into it’s dead, sunken eyes. i’ve dreamed of petting a non-parrot bird, especially a larger bird, for a while. i knew i never could, due to their nature, but i still dreamed. today i did. it was soft. it hurts that i only got to pet it in it’s death. i guess it’s better that way, though. the poor bird wasn’t stressed by my presence, and i still got to meet it up close.
then i went to micheal’s and bought art supplies. i am so sorry little cormorant, i will honor you, i promise. you are my favorite, sweet bird.
